This is an incredible recording from Saint Mike Millard on his blessed Nakamichi, of Led Zeppelin at the LA Forum on March 27, 1975. This is one of the legendary marathon shows, running more than 3 hours, in gorgeous full stereo. This is a fresh transfer made by JEMS and lightly mastered by DADGAD. It's a keeper for sure. I play a funky Over The Hills and Far Away and glorious improvisational No Quarter for us, as a taster for the full show, which is available below. Jonesy and Bonzo are perfectly synced in this amazing recording. You'll dig it.
The Cassette tape was great in so many ways, but let's be honest, they never really sounded great. But because the cassette was so much cheaper and easier to use and portable, a lot of people didn't care so much about the audio quality. They just wanted to be able to use something that they could carry around with them. The cassette's other big advantage: it was easy to record on.We talked to Marc Masters about his new book High Bias, about the history of the cassette. One chapter about concert bootleggers covers perhaps the greatest success story of the cassette: Grateful Dead live tapes.Long Strange TapePlus we're featuring a bonus story that we produced in 2016 in collaboration with Benjamen Walker's Theory of Everything about a place where cassettes were of vital importance.

For me, the 1980s comes down to two things: The Nakamichi RX-505 Cassette Deck and Metropolitan Home magazine. _____ First, the gear. _____ The Nakamichi RX-505 was an audiophile's wet dream. It was prominently featured in the steamy 1986 film, 9½ Weeks. In a scene from that movie, Mickey Rourke walks Kim Basinger into his monochrome Hell's Kitchen penthouse, where she glides through a living room full of furniture by Marcel Breuer, Richard Meier, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. In the middle of it all, the Nakamichi opens, flips the Brian Eno cassette, and closes, automatically. _____ And now, the magazine. _____ Eighties movies featured a slew of inspirational apartments: Tom Hanks' Soho loft in Big, Judd Nelson and Ally Sheedy's Georgetown pad in St. Elmo's Fire, Billy Crystal's East Village flat in When Harry Met Sally. So when apartment dwellers from Des Moines to Manhattan asked themselves “How can I make my apartment look like the ones in the movies,” they turned to Met Home. _____ While the old guard, House & Garden, Architectural Digest, and House Beautiful, relished in displaying palatial estates and lavish celebrity spreads, Met Home was the design inspiration for the rest of us. _____ By the mid-80s — thanks to today's guests: editor Dorothy Kalins and designer Don Morris — Met Home was the best-selling shelter magazine in America, boasting a higher circulation than all of them. _____ It was a magazine rich with design and lifestyle inspiration and beautiful apartments and houses, but Met Home was not a typical decorating magazine. Its stories were very personal and captured its subjects' individual passion for the things that surrounded them. _____ But it didn't last long. By the early 90s, thanks to a recession, Meredith sold Met Home to Hachette, who out-bid Jann Wenner's Straight Arrow Publishers for the magazine. Hachette, though, was more focused on its own shelter book, Elle Decor, and left Met Home to languish and fade. _____ Kalins and Morris were gone, each off on their own new adventures. _____ For many of us, Metropolitan Home was a special magazine from a special time. A hopeful time. We were moving out — to dorms, first apartments, or starter homes. We bought affordable modern furniture from a brand-new Swedish big-box store called Ikea. We drank the New Coke while we played Donkey Kong on our Nintendos. We sang along with “We Are the World.” We watched Top Gun — the original — on our VCRs. And we paid an average of $375 (!!) a month for our rent. _____ Met Home gave its intrepid readers permission to indulge themselves in creating their own home design. And, as Morris says, “We helped expose people to a lot of design trends, but also gave them a sense of how they might be able to bring that into their own lives.”
Back from Las Vegas, we kick off the year with a CES 2023 podcast special. There's plenty to look forward to with new QD-OLED TVs from Samsung, brighter MLA OLEDs from LG and Panasonic, and mini LED models across the board.
Ealan joins us again. CES is in the books and Channa and Ealan get lost there trying to find Auro3D! But they do find Nakamichi, JBL/Harman and a few others! Joe is released from NDA and can finally talk Dirac's Active Room Treatment! Joes says it works, but raises a few questions along the way. In Episode 21, we're discussing questions about bitcoin with Andy Flattery, CFP® from Simple Wealth Planning. Andy is a Kansas City-based bitcoin enthusiast and local expert on the topic that is very involved in the bitcoin community. The rise over the last decade of bitcoin has created a lot of interest, but even more questions. What is bitcoin? How does it work?Is it money or an investment? How do you value it? How do you secure it? What happens if you lose it? These are all questions that have probably popped into your head at one time or another when thinking about bitcoin.Being intrigued but still skeptical about bitcoin, Kyle sits down with Andy to ask his honest questions about bitcoin. This week's episode is sponsored by the Women in Japan Mastermind for women who want to live their best life and be the change they want to see! This mastermind gets underway on March 13th, 2019. Find out more by signing up below. https://www.jaynenakatatraining.com/mastermind We talk about: How a coin flip brought Cat to Japan How Cat became a translator What life is like living next to Japanese in-laws Raising bilingual children in Japan Her book: The quick guide to Traditional Japanese Arts and Handicrafts After studying languages and linguistics at Monash University I caught the travel bug and came to Japan. I immediately fell in love with the culture, the people and the man who would become my husband. Once I married I became the wife of the eldest son in a farming family. Tradition. Tradition. Tradition. I'm a passionate learner, an avid reader and people describe me as a go-getter. Not a day goes by when I do not learn something new. I bring this passion for discovery to every project I work on. You might wonder how I have time to be a mother (of two teenagers), heavily involved in the community in which we live and able to pursue my personal interests of sailing and embroidery as well as wearing and making kimono. My days are full but I start each one with a walk in the park with our Tohoku rescue-dog, Xyris. Life has been good to me. It would be my pleasure to discover something new and add to my personal knowledge of Japan and her rich culture by working together with you to bring your words to life - in English. CLASSICAL INTRO > Pete Townshend: “A Little Is Enough” Ahh, the days of making mixed tapes with my old Nakamichi 500 cassette deck. I was always playing around, looking to concoct some fun segue. In this case I randomly taped a classical station on the radio and thought it would work nicely mashed up with Pete Townshend's “A Little Is Enough.” I was totally enamored with Pete's 1980 solo record, Empty Glass. For my taste it was one of the two best records of the year. It had killer songs and I love Pete as a vocalist because his voice isn't that of a classic “lead singer.” Like Joe Walsh — another favorite singer of mine — Pete has to work at his vocals and own them. I guess it's his authenticity that attracts me. —John Stix

THE BEATLES et al.: “Help!” Ah, the Nakamichi 500. What a cassette deck. The pause button was so precise that you could stop and start the tape flawlessly. I once tried to get as many different songs splices as I could fit on a 45 minute cassette. I think I got upwards of 40 different songs snippets on there. This opening for “Help” is just one example of how it works. I put this on every mixed tape I made for years. And it was decades before my daughters heard the original Beatles version. Their response was, where's the opening? —John Stix

After releasing the Trash Disco series last year, I knew I had to move a decade up as the genre that defined "dance" and "disco" has substantially changed with the introduction of the drum machine and synthesizers. You'll notice the snare drum is prominent in many of the songs as it was used for timing and transition throughout most of the songs. It's easy to pick up on as this was a mainstay of the dance genre of the era. Even though these took over a week to put together, the actual process was fairly easy. The very DJ friendly (unauthorized) remixes by DJ services like Ultimix, Razormaid, and Hot Tracks (among the most popular) were designed for easier transitions between songs in a live setting. I won't bore ya'll with how a lot of this was achieved but it was not unlike what I was doing with two Nakamichi tape decks at the time. The only song that was poorly structured and frankly a hot mess was "Freeway of Love" by Aretha Franklin. It starts off easy enough but quickly loses its timing by 1/8 beat throwing off the entire mix. Because it was unusually long for a mix during this period, it required a great deal of editing which I had to do manually to get it to work. The end result was flawless and well-worth the effort. Back 2 the 80's is a two-part set with the second one dropping tomorrow. After the massive success of the of my previous 80's efforts (Pure Energy, Pump Up the Volume, and Hit That Perfect Beat) I'm guessing these will satisfy your Reagan-era dance lust. “Why Do Fools Fall In Love” (Joni Mitchell/The Happening/Spike Jones) Once again, it's me using my vintage Nakamichi 500 cassette deck back in the day. I would input two different sources into the deck and mix them live on the fly. The Happenings were kind of a joke band, perhaps influenced by Spike Lee. Joni Mitchell was just all smiles, touring around with Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker and Don Alias. It was probably one of the acclaimed jazz musicians' better paydays and everyone involved was having fun. — John Stix
Dorian Nakamichi is a published author and world traveler. We talk about what it was like backpacking in New Zealand, Asia and Europe, and her experiences volunteering as a roo (as in kangaroo) nanny in Australia!
“Something's Coming” (WEST SIDE STORY/Todd Rundgren): Sometime in the late '60s I purchased a Nakamichi 500 Cassette Deck. That, along with my Dual 1219 Turntable was the pride of my stereo setup. My favorite function on the deck was the pause button. It was automatic. There was not a moment of hesitation, so if there was a break in a song I could pause the tape and whenever I let it go, it would be a flawless segue into the next song. It was magic. In this case I started with the soundtrack to West Side Story and "Something's Coming" and segued into Todd Rundgren's version of the same song. Magic! There was a difference in the key that Todd played in, but the Dual had a knob that let you dial in the speed and there you have it.
I discuss miscellaneous topics with Nakamichi.
TOPIC: "Delivery Attempted." This week, Merlin struggles with his coffee-making options, and Dan recalls his days of fishing lures. USPS deliveries, several TV shows, and Wolverine's disturbing bone claws are also discussed. Listener Jackson writes in to ask about dealing with failings of self-discipline.

Updated with minor corrections and the addition of "Don't Wanna Know (Mark Neo Remix)" by Maroon 5 feat. Kendrick Lamar. One thing you'll notice on the two Jingle Electric sets is that the songs are getting shorter and shorter. So much so, they're pretty much radio edits. This is a trend that started several years ago with Jump Smokers and their shelved remix album for Mariah. This is likely at the behest of the major labels for whatever their reasons. It does make mixing a challenge, but it's something I've had to contend with previously, just not on this grand of a scale. Basically, I'm relying on my skills of editing the mixes together much like I did back in the day on two Nakamichi tape decks. I had gotten so damn good at it, folks thought the sets were one continuous mix; a testament to my skills. Nevertheless, I may be a bit rusty but overall, I think these sets turned out quite nicely considering the vast BPM range of the songs I was dealing with. So pop on this current set of the Jingle Electric and be sure to let me know what you think! I'll be back next week with the HOT Santa's and circuit beats for the boys! Until then...ENJOY! David and Tim talk about a few different BlueTooth audio products, including the LuguLake Portable Wireless Speaker, the Genius headset, and more. Tim talks more about his iPhone 6 Plus, and David took the plunge on a iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2. And Owen is flying to Hawaii, so we hate him now.
A special treat for Radio Nova Lujon listeners with another Nakamichi transfer… could not fit this one on the SoundCloud account as its two + half sides of three (of four, still sourcing the last part) mix tapes that Rob Tocknell recorded Live on the night with Tony Humphries in fine fettle at ‘Butt Naked’ on Friday 12th June 1992 at Oceans in London… If you listen closely you can actually hear the crowd ‘having it’ even though no mic’s where used on the night! When I started combing through the songs that would be used in this next edition, the Disco Fairy paid me a visit and hit me with her disco stick. Shortly after, I had the overwhelming urge to get down, shake, shake, shake my booty and boogie oogie oogie. Even though I had a strong group of tunes for this set, I was in a state of trance and found myself over at Juno combing through their NuDisco section and adding things to my cart like I had just won the lottery. I was feverishly consumed with boogie fever. Soon, I had a bill that had swelled to $50. Regardless, like a first timer in a club full of hot men, I just couldn't put on the brakes; I literally had to have it ALL! After downloading all of my newly purchased tracks, I went right to work on this mix. A lot of these songs are not really suited for mixing or beat matching in the true sense of the word. Back in the day, I taught myself to create these amazing mixes by splicing together songs at various intervals using two Nakamichi decks. By the early 90s, I was doing it on a single minidisc player. Relying on that same method, that's pretty much how most of this set was put together. While there is some beatmatching going on, most of this set was sliced and diced, giving the perception of a masterful mix. The beats were anywhere from 112 to 128 BPM. In order to keep a solid flow without speeding up and slowing things down, I averaged all the beats to 124 BPM which provides for a much smoother ride. I'm not going to say this is for everyone, because it's not. I do believe that the true believers amongst us will eat this up; while others will be asking yourselves “where's the beef?” No need to worry, I'll be starting on the companion sets later today and you can expect those to drop later this week. In the meantime, I'm serving up a disco lovers dream fantasy come true. If anyone has an opinion on this mix, good or bad, let me know. I'd really like to hear what you think. I'll be back by the middle part of next week with the alternate takes, which will be more in the vein of what you would normally expect. Until then, enjoy! >>>PLEASE READ
