This is a fantastic recording of The Rolling Stones at the LA Forum, July 9, 1975. St. Michael Millard is the taper so the sound is out of this world. The Stones are also pretty darn great. This is Ronnie Wood's first tour with the Stones and he brings energy, fun, and a good bit of skill to the band. They sound revitalized. Billy Preston is with them as well, bringing a funkiness to the proceedings. I play Star, Star, Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker), and a funky Fingerprint File. A good one!

This is as legendary as legendary gets. Led Zeppelin at the LA Forum, June 23, 1977 is one of the most popular, and famous, bootleg recordings out there. The quality of Mike Millard's master recording is matched by the quality of the bands' performance. The first four songs are from the Barry Goldstein master tape, which is almost as good as Millard's. It really ties the room together, as it were. I play Nobody's Fault But Mine, a serene and sublime Ten Years Gone, and a muy fuerte Achilles' Last Stand. It's nice to hear this show with even better clarity. All thanks to the JEMS taping group for curating and preserving these precious recordings.
Ebro, Laura, and Rosenberg host HOT 97's flagship program "Ebro In The Morning!" On today's episode 6/20/2024, it's all Kendrick from wall to wall, if you're a Drake stan - take the L gracefully, the entire show is discussing the Juneteenth Ken & Friends Pop Out at the LA Forum - except for when Kast tells a story about bunnys.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Well.... This battle isn't over. Kendrick Lamar just played a song (not like us) at the LA Forum 32 times in a row. So you for sure know Drake heard it at least once. He probably saw the California team photo as well. I've updated this playlist for almost 763 Sundays in a row. Change your musical life with just one click.
This is an incredible recording from Saint Mike Millard on his blessed Nakamichi, of Led Zeppelin at the LA Forum on March 27, 1975. This is one of the legendary marathon shows, running more than 3 hours, in gorgeous full stereo. This is a fresh transfer made by JEMS and lightly mastered by DADGAD. It's a keeper for sure. I play a funky Over The Hills and Far Away and glorious improvisational No Quarter for us, as a taster for the full show, which is available below. Jonesy and Bonzo are perfectly synced in this amazing recording. You'll dig it.

This a brand new transfer from Mike Millard's master cassettes themselves (not the DAT tansfer) by the laudable JEMS tape group, remastered tastefully by DADGAD. June 27, 1977. Led Zeppelin's final night of a five night run at the LA Forum. I play Sick Again (which rocks), Since I've Been Loving You, which shines in its more mature 1977 arrangement, and an adventurous Ten Years Gone in which not every landing is stuck, but the attempts are noteworthy. This is a stellar recording of really good show. Lots of magic here. Zeppelin at the Forum is not to be missed.
Interview with internationally-known guitar maker and musician Paul Reed Smith. 2024 Paul Reed Smith - Eightlock is a band of high-level musicians who are friends and have “locked” together recording and performing a new kind of groove with its roots in Baltimore funk, DC go-go and New Orleans swing. The band's sound is a heady brew of blues, soul, rock, funk and other roots sounds, all stirred-up into a groove-alicious gumbo. The line-up is three drummers, a bass player, a female singer and three guitar players, and the excitement around their three drummer groove is infectious. The band's three drummers are: Dennis Chambers (John Scofield, George Duke, Brecker Brothers, Santana, Parliament/Funkadelic, John McLaughlin) who was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2001; Gregory Grainger (Whitney Houston, Acoustic Alchemy); and Ju Ju House the legendary DC Go-Go drummer (Roberta Flack, Trevor Horn and The Chuck Brown Band). Bassist Gary Grainger has performed with John Scofield, Nancy Wilson, George Duke and Bill Evans. Vocalist Mia Samone Davis has a beautiful multifaceted voice that got its start in gospel music at a very young age. Guitarist Mike Ault regularly performs with high caliber artists including Rachelle Ferrell David Grissom, and Davy Knowles. Guitarist Bill Nelson is the Director of the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center where he was introduced and invited to join the band in their efforts to raise money for cancer patients and families. “This group of highly respected and world-renowned musicians have a lot to say musically and spiritually,” Paul Reed Smith says. “It's been an absolute joy to be the catalyst for their gifts resulting in the music found in Lions Roaring in Quicksand.” Added guitarist/vocalist Dr. Bill Nelson: “The musicianship in Eightlock is extraordinary, but what amazes me most is that the music - both the recordings and live performances - just keep getting better and better. Locking into an Eightlock groove is a dream." And dynamic lead singer Mia Samone summed it up by saying, "Creating this CD reminded me that, ‘Peace is the price when the mind is at war'......inner peace is priceless." In addition to performing and recording with his own band, Paul Reed Smith has played with artists such as Santana, Alter Bridge and the Doobie Brothers. He was honored by Vintage Guitar Magazine as a Hall of Fame inductee in 2011. Paul has countless industry connections through all of the artists that endorse his guitars, plus invaluable marketing opportunities through his guitar company and all of the music stores around the world that sell his guitars. Grammy-award winning Mexican rock band Manaì had him open their residency at the LA Forum this year, John Mayer and Santana have taken him on tour. In addition to 10 powerful original songs on Lions Roaring in Quicksand, the new album features a cover of a Manaì song in English, “Ay, Doctor,” that the band has agreed to share on their social media to their millions of fans, as well as scintillating versions of the Al Green soul classic, “Love and Happiness,” the legendary Edwin Starr song, “War,” and “99,” a chart hit for the original version in France. This show is amazing. The sound quality is bassy with some distortion but DADGAD does a great job balancing this into a paradoxically well balanced/bass heavy recording. The music is magical and the band are locked and playing well. Jimmy's control and technique are in top form and all the musicians are listening, and responding, to each other as they jam. Magic is a word that applies here. I play a fun and tight In My Time of Dying and the longest No Quarter on record (33 minutes!), and it's amazing!

This is a really brilliant DAGAD remaster of John Wizardo's master tapes of Led Zeppelin on June 23, 1977 (The legendary For Badgeholders Only show with Keith Moon) at the LA Forum. This recording is exquisite and the show and atmosphere are second to none. A good one for sure!
We listen to a stellar Mike Millard master recording of Led Zeppelin at the LA Forum on June 25, 1977. 46 years ago this week the band played an epic 5 nights at the Forum, and in recognition of this feat I play a couple of songs from one of those legendary gigs, one song being a 30 minute brilliant No Quarter. For real. Good stuff.
Steve was at the Taylor Hawkins Memorial at the LA Forum, where he saw Josh Freese & it was a no brainer. What does it take to fill those shoes? We're glad you asked...Also, some light cannibalism discourse. Seriously.

The album was nominated for Album of the Year but lost to Fleetwood Mac's Rumours. Three singles were released from the album, with two topping the Billboard Hot 100, "New Kid in Town" and "Hotel California", while "Life in the Fast Lane" reached No. 11. Hotel California is the 7th best-selling albums of all time. It has been certified 26× Platinum in the US, and has sold over 32 million copies worldwide, making it the band's best-selling album after Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975). It has been ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time. In 2003 and 2012, it was ranked number 37 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". A 40th anniversary special edition of Hotel California was released in November 2017. The first song written for the album was "Hotel California", which became the theme for the album. Henley said the themes of the songs on the album:"They're the same themes that run through all of our work: loss of innocence, the cost of naiveté, the perils of fame, of excess; exploration of the dark underbelly of the American dream, idealism realized and idealism thwarted, illusion versus reality, the difficulties of balancing loving relationships and work, trying to square the conflicting relationship between business and art; the corruption in politics, the fading away of the Sixties dream of "peace, love and understanding." On the title "Hotel California", Henley said that "the word, 'California,' carries with it all kinds of connotations, powerful imagery, mystique, etc., that fires the imaginations of people in all corners of the globe. There's a built-in mythology that comes with that word, an American cultural mythology that has been created by both the film and the music industry." In an interview with the Dutch magazine ZigZag shortly before the album's release, Don Henley said:"This is a concept album, there's no way to hide it, but it's not set in the old West, the cowboy thing, you know. It's more urban this time (…) It's our bicentennial year, you know, the country is 200 years old, so we figured since we are the Eagles and the Eagle is our national symbol, that we were obliged to make some kind of a little bicentennial statement using California as a microcosm of the whole United States, or the whole world, if you will, and to try to wake people up and say 'We've been okay so far, for 200 years, but we're gonna have to change if we're gonna continue to be around.'" First time you heard the album? Vocals: Don Henley Length: 6:30 (Second single, Feb 22, 77)-Possibly the most iconic music intro of all time. So good, and so classic.-Love the story it tells; it always reminded me of The Shining. As stated, its supposed to feel like an episode of The Twilight Zone.-It's such a journey through the whole song, obviously of over indulgence and learning-the Eagles themselves describing the song as their "interpretation of the high life in Los Angeles". In the 2013 documentary History of the Eagles, Henley said that the song was about "a journey from innocence to experience ... that's all".-Henley reiterated:On just about every album we made, there was some kind of commentary on the music business, and on American culture in general. The hotel itself could be taken as a metaphor not only for the myth-making of Southern California, but for the myth-making that is the American Dream, because it is a fine line between the American Dream, and the American nightmare. "New Kid in Town" Written by: Henley, Frey, J.D. Souther, Vocals: Glenn ,Frey, Length: 5:04 (First single released, Dec 7, 76) -I always thought this had a Jimmy Buffet vibe, seems to be about love, loss, and moving on.-Souther said, “It's about the fleeting, fickle nature of love and romance,” he said. “It's also about the fleeting nature of fame, especially in the music business. We were basically saying, ‘Look, we know we're red hot right now but we also know that somebody's going to come along and replace us—both in music and in love.” "Life in the Fast Lane" Written by: Henley, Frey, Joe Walsh, Vocals: Henley, Length: 4:46 (3rd single, May 3, 77) -Epic intro riff. Such a damn fun song. Obviously about, well, life in the fast lane, and its consequences.-Surprised they dropped a 'GD' in '76-Frey said, “I was riding shotgun in a Corvette with a drug dealer on the way to a poker game. The next thing I know we're doing 90. Holding! Big-Time! I say ‘Hey man!' He grins and goes ‘Life in the fast lane!' I thought, ‘Now there's a song title,'” Frey explained in the 2013 documentary, History of the Eagles.Guitarist Joe Walsh once said, “Life in the Fast Lane” embodies the stereotypical Los Angeles spirit and the “‘'run around in your Porsche' 24-hour boogie mode that unfortunately is too true for a lot of people,” "Wasted Time" Written by: Henley, Frey, Vocals: Henley, Length: 4:55 -Intro kinda sounds like desperado. Seems to be about starting over, moving on, new relationships; after a long one, or just being older.-Seems like an early version of a power ballad (like 80's rock bands did)-Frey said, “I loved all the records coming out of Philadelphia at that time. I sent for some sheet music so I could learn some of those songs, and I started creating my own musical ideas with that Philly influence. Don was our Teddy Pendergrass (a soul singer). He could stand out there all alone and just wail. We did a big Philly-type production with strings — definitely not country-rock. You're not going to find that track on a Crosby, Stills & Nash record or Beach Boys record. Don's singing abilities stretched so many of our boundaries. He could sing the phone book. It didn't matter.” Side two "Wasted Time" (Reprise) Written by: Henley, Frey, Jim Ed Norman, No Vocals: instrumental, Length: 1:22-A purely musical piece continuing the mood and feeling of the previous track. "Victim of Love" Written by: Felder, Henley, Frey, Souther, Vocals: Henley, Length: 4:11-Back to that rock/country sound/tone hard on this one.-Seems to be pretty surface level theme; someone was wronged by a ex-love and possibly revenge motive-Don Felder, explained: "We were trying to move in a heavier direction, away from country rock. And so I wrote 16 or 17 song ideas, kind of in a more rock and roll direction, and 'Victim of Love' was one of those songs. I remember we went in the studio and we recorded it live with five guys playing. The only thing that wasn't played in a live session was the lead vocal and harmony on the choruses. Everything else was recorded live." "Pretty Maids All in a Row" Written by: Walsh, Joe Vitale, Vocals: Joe Walsh, Length: 4:05-Another piano intro like New Kid In Town. Definitely a reminiscent song... Growing up, moving on, and looking back.-It's a quick song, very etherical.-Who are the “pretty maids” the singer talks about? Some analysts believe that the reunited friends in question are actually former lovers (actually a married couple who are now divorced). Now, the couple, having met each other again after a long time, find themselves swimming through memories from their wedding day. Hence the row of beautiful maids. Some Eagles fans also believe the maids in question are actually the girls The Eagles normally saw lingering outside their hotel rooms whenever they finished performing a show. So the band members are basically reminiscing about those interesting days. "Try and Love Again" Written by: Randy Meisner, Vocals: Randy Meisner, Length: 5:10-Its more light than the others. It's about fond memories, and looking ahead. Loving again after heartbreak. Having a positive outlook after sadness. (Mattox)-Its definitely a different sound than the other songs, but in a good way.-The lyrics are earnest. The lyrics express a man trying to overcome feeling of doubt concerning getting back out there after a breakup. Will I be able to love again? Is it even worth it? Will I end up hurting more? "The Last Resort" Written by: Henley, Frey, Vocals: Henley, Length: 5:16-It's definitely a heartfelt song about destruction.-It is a huge statement about development and environmentalism.-Henley said: "The Last Resort, on Hotel California, is still one of my favorite songs... That's because I care more about the environment than about writing songs about drugs or love affairs or excesses of any kind. The gist of the song was that when we find something good, we destroy it by our presence - by the very fact that man is the only animal on earth that is capable of destroying his environment. The environment is the reason I got into politics: to try to do something about what I saw as the complete destruction of most of the resources that we have left. We have mortgaged our future for gain and greed." **BONUS**: Seven Bridges Road: Written by Steve Young (1969):-Never really listened to the lyrics, but this song takes you on a journey. It's incredible.-Inspired by a rural thoroughfare in Alabama that leads from Georgiana to the Oakwood Annex Cemetery in Montgomery (final resting place of Hank Williams), the song weds an unforgettable melody with lyrics that are hauntingly specific:“There are stars in the southern sky/Southward as you go.” Top Five Trivia of the movie (From Ultimate Classic Rock https://ultimateclassicrock.com/eagles-hotel-california-facts/): 5: Don Felder did not expect Hotel California to be a hit because of the length, and it's composition4: The working title was “Mexican Reggae," given by Don Henley3: When it came time to record the song, Don Felder had forgotten what he'd written. he had to have his maid at home play the song over the phone and put it back together, since it had been a year since he composed it and they recorded.2: There are countless theories as to the architectural inspiration behind "Hotel California," Eagles maintained the song was always an overarching metaphor for the fleeting materialism and wealth of California, but fans began to wonder if a real-life hotel had inspired the song, ranging from local psychiatric hospitals to Aleister Crowley's mansion in Scotland to the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles.1: The photo on the album cover nearly got the band sued. According to Henley, "We were enamored with hotels...Hotels were a big part of our lives. The Beverly Hills Hotel had become something of a focal point — literally and symbolically. I've always been interested in architecture and the language of architecture, and, at that time, I was particularly keen on the mission style of early California. I thought there was a certain mystery and romance about it." When word finally got out which hotel it was, and as the album soared on the charts, the Beverly Hotel threatened with a cease-and-desist, but then backed off after they noticed their bookings had tripled. The LA Forum for Architecture and Urban Design has offered a critical look at the city of Los Angeles since the late 80's. The nonprofit has been providing public programming, exhibitions, and publications through its ever-shifting board of directors and volunteer contributors. To celebrate this 30-year milestone, the Forum has carefully selected a collection of pieces published from its origin to today, and has published these in a book under the themes of Experiments, Detours, Hunches, and Santa Anas. Today, Los Angeles is a major architectural and urban player, but for decades the city was dismissed suburban and centerless. In republishing three decades of material on architecture and design in Los Angeles, the LA Forum Reader reclaims and reconsiders the city’s architectural and discursive histories. It establishes, or reestablishes, a textual context for critical experimentation and urban investigation. This anthological volume includes essays, interviews, and reproductions of publications that have long been out of print, including pamphlets by Craig Hodgetts and Margaret Crawford, as well as early writings by Aaron Betsky and John Chase. In this week's show I invited editors Mimi Zeiger, Chava Danielson and Michael Sweeney to Archinect's recording studio to discuss the history of the Forum and the process of putting together this anthology.
Episode 10 features Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter, Dean of the School of Architecture at Woodbury University and Director of WUHO (Woodbury University Hollywood) Gallery. Ingalill was elevated to the College of Fellows in the AIA this year, a high distinction awarded to only 3 percent of AIA members. She serves on the advisory board of the LA Forum for Architecture and Urban Design,* and previously was on the Board of the AIA|LA. Prior to her tenure at Woodbury, Ingalill taught at Cornell, Yale, the Bartlett, and Sci-Arc, and also worked as an architect, specializing in the building envelope and experimental use of glass. In this episode, Ingalill discusses the importance of diversity and the role of ethics in architecture and architecture education. Through her work at Woodbury, Ingalill has created multiple pathways for future architects, leading to a field that is more accessible and inclusive. She also talks openly about gender and the complexities of raising a daughter in this world, and shares strategies for being a thoughtful leader. Music, as an industry, has found a consistent audience in young people for decades. But what music means to them is changing. Popular songs today often have less to do with singers than they do with the artistry of sound engineers (consider the production work on the new number one song in America: “I Wanna Go” by Britney Spears). With sound editing programs, digital suites, and auto-tune at their disposal, the concept of live performances can seem like an afterthought. But a few artists, like Bay Area rapper Lyrics Born, are working hard to keep live music, well, alive. KALW’s Jayme Catsouphes has the story. -- JAYME CATSOUPHES: When you think about it, the whole notion of going to see live music is a bit twisted. I mean, you don’t go to the Louvre and listen to the “Mona Lisa.” But traditionally speaking, music is performance art. It lives. It breathes. And recordings are just archives, snap shots, the postcard you pick up as you exit through the gift shop. Music is supposed to be perceived through all five senses. June 25, 1972: third row at the LA Forum. Music looked like tight pants, big hair, a wall of speakers. It smelled like an ashtray, tasted like a beer and felt like the deep rumbling bass of John Bonham’s kick drum. Some details just don’t quite make it onto the recording. And that’s why every summer, music fans travel across the country to attend big music festivals to see their favorite artists live and in person. But putting on a jaw-dropping live show is complicated, especially when you’re a musician who uses a lot of electronics. In hip-hop for example, it’s not uncommon for an album to be recorded, cut, and sold, all without anyone playing a single instrument. How do you turn that into a live show? Bay Area rapper Lyrics Born says that it takes a lot of work. LYRICS BORN: Interpreting hip-hop live, it’s always been an interesting thing to watch, with people that do it well. People can listen to your music in their car, or at home, or on the computer. You don't necessarily pay to see somebody perform to get the same experience. You want it to be exciting. You want to walk away from it feeling like, “Oh wow. More dimension has just been added to what I’ve previously been listening to.” Which is one of the reasons why this seasoned producer chooses to perform with a live band. LYRICS BORN: For me, I find myself frequently taking the original recording and wanting to provide a departure, for both the listener and also myself. Maybe you want to extend it or change certain things about the recording or the tempo, the groove. I mean, you just have a lot of flexibility when you play with a band. And adding live musicians makes the show more exciting for the audience. Fans get to look at the players, see their instruments, visually connect that with the sound... GONZALO CASTRO: And I was happily surprised by how much more went into the production. Gonzalo Castro first saw Lyrics Born at San Francisco’s Outside Lands music festival. CASTRO: There was a horn section, two drummers, a bongo section, backup singers, a full live band, guitar, bass, so I was kind of surprised at the production of it all. It just had a different feel to it, the music, because it wasn’t studio-based. For some fans, that’s a good thing. But Lyrics Born says there’s a flip side. LYRICS BORN: A lot of people come to the shows and they wanna see, or hear, the music be different – but not that different. You don’t want to stray too far from the original feeling. With a genre like hip-hop that’s both rhythmic and poetic, playing a live show in front of thousands of fans requires making a few artistic concessions. GEORGE ELLETT: Sometimes the lyrics go over your head because it is live. And if they have a live band, you’re kind of distracted. George Ellett Smith is a longtime Lyrics Born fan. ELLETT: But it’s always cool to see how the emcee … his mannerisms and the way he carries his flows. So that way, when you’re actually listening, I think it gives you a better picture of how he’s presenting the words, like as you’re driving and listening to their CD. So definitely, I think, hip-hop in general benefits from listening on a CD. For any venue and any genre, there will be limitations. Arena rock would be a tough sell in a coffee shop. And Lyrics Born knows a big music festival probably isn’t the best venue for a poetry slam. So when he plays a big event like Outside Lands, he beefs up the rhythm side of things and taps into his skills as a showman. And for Gonzalo Castro, it worked. CASTRO: I thought he did a great job of being very involved with the crowd and making sure everybody was dancing and having a good time and doing a lot of call-and-chant, back and forth with the crowd. There was a lot of production to it, a lot of performance and a lot of interactions, so you know, it was just a lot of fun, at the end of the day. Hip-hop artists will use different techniques to stimulate the audience. Some use dancers, some use fancy light shows. But at the end of the day, people want to see live music. LYRICS BORN: I’ve gone to some shows where it’s just one guy on stage and he looks like he’s just checking his email. Lyrics Born says that’s not a fun show. LYRICS BORN: I mean when you say it’s a live show, it should be exactly that, it should be live. And it should be a show. For Crosscurrents, I’m Jayme Catsouphes.
Gordie is joined by Ty Domke to talk about music, UFOs and plumbing. Ty goes to his first concert at the LA Forum, wants to play her-monica and knows a little bit about a lot of things. Joe Satriani sets off the fire alarm at The Uptown Theater where the sound is incredible. Big Country and UFO makes Gordie smile and we finish up talking about wine, Maynard from Tool and Art Bell. (Jake Shimabukuro, The Rolling Stones, KISS, The Doors, The Southern Death Cult, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Huey Lewis also come up.)
