It's hard to imagine that in 2025, a 70-plus-year-old slow train is still shuttling back and forth between Xinglong County and the city center of Chengde. During the #ChineseNewYear, China Daily reporter boarded this slow train, tasted locally grown fruits, made friends, and listened to the heartwarming stories volunteers and conductors had to share. Who hasn't boarded the train yet? Hurry up, we're about to depart! #SpringFestival #CulturalJourney

The Sunset Limited, Westbound - Fly or take the Amtrak? The journey or the destination? Taking the slow train to Tucson just felt right. You know when your whole body craves a more gentle, almost human tempo to carry you onto the next place? So, whilst keen to get to the wide open desert, the opportunity to stretch out the journey, savour the changing landscape through Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, and have time to meet my fellow passengers was too much of a pull. In Episode 3 we follow the lowlines of the train tracks and the hiss, groan and gentle gyrations of the 36 hour journey as I talk off-grid living, denture cream woes, magic mushrooms and marrying the same man three times with a raft of fellow travellers - all while trying to get a decent bite to eat and a bit of shut eye.CreditsFeaturing the voices of the King Brothers (Matt, Lenny, Lee and Bobby), Maria-Luisa Aguilar, Meredith, Brad, Konnor Broussard, the burrito lady on the platform in El Paso, Jackie in the cafeteria and Dwayne the conductorProduced by Lucia Scazzocchio of Social Broadcasts, Executive-Produced by Lina Prestwood of Scenery Studios, Mixing & Mastering: Jobina TinnemansMusic by Hannah Marshall with featured music via YouTube courtesy of Ry Cooder and Bobby KingTo go deeper into this episode head to low-lines.com

With summer vacation travels upon us, this week's episode mixes a little old with a little new. In part 1, our 2020 interview with Bill Rogan, author of "Life Ain't the Same in the Pecos League: A Rookie Manager Navigates Baseball's Most Notorious Independent League." Bill wrote the book about his 2019 season at the helm for the Tucson Saguaros in the independent Pecos League. This interview was a blast to do and if you missed it in 2020, here is your chance to catch it.In part 2, our recent interview with Erik McLaren, a writer and host of Religious Wars, a podcast that looks at history through a lens of conflicts in faith. Erik joins us to discuss his thoughts on how religious themes, ideas and images are presented in Western popular music. The Slow Train is back, and with it comes David Hayward, a.k.a. the Naked Pastor. David is a former pastor who has since become an artist, creating amazing paintings and cartoons that challenge aspects of religious environments in ways that provoke conversations - in fact he's recently released a collection of cartoons called Flip it Like This which you can check out right now and put it on your coffee table if you want to spark some conversations of your own. He's also an author, having written 10 books including one of my favourites, Til Doubt Do Us Part, about changing beliefs and their impact within marriage. David and I chat about his own deconstruction, and the multiple facets that are contained within deconstruction - not just theologically, but also ecclesiologically, as people often find themselves needing to deconstruct what church was to them and find their way outside of those community spaces. We also talk about what healthy spiritual growth is, not letting others impose their agendas on our deconstruction, and the importance of enjoying the current moment you find yourself in along your journey.---Check out the Naked Pastor at nakedpastor.com or @nakedpastor on Instagram!----I mentioned Carly Butler's Patreon in the podcast endnotes - here's a link to that as well: https://www.patreon.com/CarlyButler

China is celebrating the lunar new year. The Ministry of Transport predicts that by February 15th over 2bn journeys will be made by Chinese heading to their home towns–and for some migrant workers, it'll be the first time they've returned since the start of the covid-19 pandemic three years ago. The Economist's Beijing bureau chief, David Rennie, has a standing ticket for a train ride that's part of the biggest annual human migration on the planet. He asks passengers on a two-day train from Guangzhou to Urumqi about the economic and emotional challenges involved in going home. He and Alice Su, our senior China correspondent, also hear from Han Dongfang, founder of the China Labour Bulletin, about a pay problem that's gripping the country's most vulnerable workers.Sign up to our weekly newsletter here and for full access to print, digital and audio editions, as well as exclusive live events, subscribe to The Economist at economist.com/drumoffer. Luke Williams joins the Slow Train to Heck to share his journey through and out of Christianity. Luke has lived through many different experiences in his life, and the message of suffering, and the expectation of suffering both now and in the future, was a strong one. However, Luke was able to move beyond that message and share his story with us now.I'm a big believer in people being able to share all of themselves and their whole story, and Luke and I realized that his story needed two parts to be told in full. This episode is Part One, and Part Two will be released on October 19th.Content warnings: homophobia, medical situationsLuke provided some show notes as well, which are as follows:Music Stuff:-The Plok Soundtrack (Starting from Beach when it gets good!) - https://youtu.be/0JVJP6te8n4?t=1053-Sammus' powerful rap about inclusion at Magfest 2016 - https://youtu.be/Ss18rvfkCd0?t=2137-Earthbound Song 'Happy Happy Is Blue' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReKd5LpEOQc-Jacob Collier's Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9CusMKhoqk-Phil Keaggy - The Reunion - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC4om10cfWw-And for the very brave: Luke's Spotify Top 20 VERY Wild Favourite Songs- https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4Nrowj6IYnIkRkel83hHDmLuke recommends the following Leftist Podcasts:For informative deep dives on misinformation: Citations Needed - https://citationsneeded.libsyn.com/For improv comedy stories from history from two leftists comedians: The Dollop - https://www.dolloppodcast.com/podcastFor the murder podcast fan; but more important to know about: Behind the Bastards - https://www.iheart.com/podcast/105-behind-the-bastards-29236323/For a scripted podcast about potential solutions: Unf*cking the Republic - https://www.unftr.com/And check out what an Israeli Kibbutz can look like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ies2R__4c58 (not prescriptive, just fascinating...) This week we interview Josiah Mahon host of the "Slow Train to Heck" podcast! Josiah faced a choice that many of us in REVcovery have had to face; do I tell the truth or do I stay silent? He chose the former and as many of us know the consequences were wide-ranging and unpredictable. Fortunately Josiah was able to find a path forward and for that we are very grateful because he is a truly delightful human being and his story is one that we are very exited to share. Welcome to the REVcovery Room! Rev. Sarah Heath, author, designer, pastor, life coach, and host of great podcasts like Revcovery, joins us on the Slow Train to Heck this week. Sarah grew up in Ontario working at Christian camp where she discovered her own innate leadership skills which would eventually translate to her being a great leader in church ministry. When she moved to the Bible Belt in the USA, she encountered a different version of Christianity than the one she was used to in Canada. Sarah shares her story of navigating American Christianity while moving up in the ministry world as a "professional Christian", becoming the "Pastor Sarah" persona while losing touch with how to be "Sarah" - until she eventually left formal Christian ministry and was able to rediscover who Sarah is outside of that environment. Natalie Van Osch joins the Slow Train to Heck to tell her story of growing up as a trans woman in a rural Catholic community in Ontario where her whole life was wrapped up in the Church, and her journey out of that environment and finding the freedom to explore her own identity. Content Warnings: transphobia, LGBTQ2S+ discrimination, depression, suicide
It's the first Slow Train to Heck of spring! In the spring spirit of new life and growth, we're talking with Fiona Stevenson this week about her own growth through her journey with spirituality. Seasonal metaphors aside, Fiona has a great story detailing the twists and turns of her path through Christianity - growing up as an atheist, converting to Christianity in the form of Catholicism, leaving the Catholic church, then later returning as a true "catholic" in the sense of the universal catholic church. Fiona also has a lot of great encouragement for those of us in the midst of deconstruction and feeling the pain of that, so if that's you, I hope this episode is helpful!Content warnings: Catholic church abuses, including residential schools and sexual abuseCheck out Fiona's website at thewalkhome.org.
On this weeks episode I talk about how dirty the city of Philadelphia is, the crazy Cain Velasquez story and the final part of Kanye West Documentary. Thank you always to our sponsors!

This has been the worst week of the Biden presidency ever, and it's because Biden is awful at being president. The weak economy, soaring inflation, covid catastrophe, SCOTUS decision slapping down his OSHA mandate- how much worse can it get? Well since feebly, sleepy Joe is running the show, it could get a lot worse. Russia is poised to invade Ukraine- maybe he can hand that one off to Kamala to handle, as she did such a great job on the border. Plus one of Biden's top COVID advisors- Dr. Osterholm- admits that cloth masks against Omicron are a cruel joke, but of course he wants everyone to use N95s now, like a psycho. “There is already a tantalising sense of escape - of slipping beneath the radar of modern life" - Tom Chesshyre 'Slow Train to Venice'Welcome to Episode #28 Genova, LiguriaOne of things I adore about this whole Italian adventure is just how many doors Italy has to offer. Open one or two in you are in for a treat. Books, art, food and everything else. Travel takes on some kind of luminous quality once you get there, or are there...(Yes, I am waiting for the next door to open....that indeed is a different kind of story!)Firstly, I apologise for the echo chamber on the mic, perhaps next time I will not use the air pods for recording. However I love this share, I think there is something special about the many layers you experience on reflection and in the moment of travel. And secondly, it is a deep offering no less and I hope you enjoy it.....On Genova......A port city will always be an interesting multi sensory experience, a place where the mix of culture, ethnicity and class will not only dominate but inform the place. The commercial enterprises of the city are paramount to not only survival but the cultural diversity… in other words everyone has tried and tested these waters. Genova is the trade link for the Mediterranean Sea, in years past it has been called by many names….”la Superba" ...the proud one, "la Dominante"... the dominant one and/or, "la Repubblica dei magnifici", the Republic of the Magnificents..... the list goes on.....As a maritime republic Genova maintained control from around the 11th century to later in the 18th. La Superba indeed, the gritty beauty of this large city runs parallel to Unesco World Heritage sites, old world palazzos and the fabulous array of art that hides behind beckoning world class architecture and the historic detail of a rivaling maritime city that makes for a fascinating and deeply layered place. This is a story of a family traveling, discovering and learning about the sweet details that makes Italy La Superba.© 2021 A Writer In Italy - travel, writing, art and lifeMusic Composed by Richard Johnston, © 2021Please find all Show Notes and details mentioned at: www.michellejohnston.lifeInstagram: @awriterinitaly and @theyellowhouse__About A Writer in Italy Podcast:Five years ago Michelle Johnston traveled to Italy to create space for herself and her writing.
