What is lucid surrender? Can dreams facilitate psycho-spiritual transformation? Can we be in contact with those who have died and what does this suggest about the afterlife? We speak today with Melinda Powell from the Dream Research Institute in London. Melinda starts by talking about how she has been a lucid dreamer since a child, and she shares a powerful snake dream and how working with that dream in waking life was transformational. We talk about lucid surrender, both dreaming and awake, and how dreams are a kind of angel that is out ahead of us. After the break, we take a question from Max and talk about how our dreams are showing us how to live. We end with a conversation about the luminous void. BIO: Melinda Powell is co-founder of the Dream Research Institute, London, and past Vice-President of the International Association of Dreams. She has authored three books: The Hidden Lives of Dreams, Lucid Surrender: The Alchemy of the Soul in Lucid Dreaming, and her latest: Dreams My Mother Taught Me: Lessons in Lucid Dreaming from Beyond the Grave, which will be available from June 30th, 2025. Located in London's Little Venice behind Paddington Station, the DRI is housed in the Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy Education (CCPE) which offers a 5-year accredited training in psychotherapy from a spiritual perspective and a master's degree in Transpersonal Psychotherapy. Of all the books written on Abraham Lincoln, there has been one surprising gap: the drama of how the “railsplitter” from Illinois grew into his critical role as U.S. commander-in-chief, and managed to outwit his formidable opponent, Jefferson Davis, in what remains history's only military faceoff between rival American presidents. Davis was a trained soldier and war hero; Lincoln a country lawyer who had only briefly served in the militia. Confronted with the most violent and challenging war ever seen on American soil, Lincoln seemed ill-suited to the task: inexperienced, indecisive, and a poor judge of people's motives, he allowed his administration's war policies to be sabotaged by fickle, faithless cabinet officials while entrusting command of his army to a preening young officer named George McClellan – whose defeat in battle left Washington, the nation's capital, at the mercy of General Robert E. Lee, Davis's star performer. The war almost ended there. But in a Shakespearean twist, Lincoln summoned the courage to make, at last, a climactic decision: issuing as a “military necessity” a proclamation freeing the 3.5 million enslaved Americans without whom the South could not feed or fund their armed insurrection. The new war policy doomed the rebellion—which was in dire need of support from Europe, none of whose governments now would dare to recognize rebel “independence” in a war openly fought over slavery. The fate of President Davis was sealed. With a cast of unforgettable characters, from first ladies to fugitive coachmen to treasonous cabinet officials, Lincoln vs. Davis is a spellbinding dual biography from renowned presidential chronicler Nigel Hamilton: a saga that will surprise, touch, and enthrall. About the Author: Historian Nigel Hamilton is a New York Times best-selling biographer of General Bernard “Monty” Montgomery, President John F. Kennedy, President Bill Clinton, and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, among other subjects. He has won multiple awards, including the Whitbread Prize and the Templer Medal for Military History. The first volume of his FDR a War trilogy, The Mantle of Command, was longlisted for the National Book Award. He is a senior fellow at the McCormack Graduate School, University of Massachusetts Boston, and splits his time between Boston, Massachusetts, and New Orleans, Louisiana.

We're taking a little break this week, so here's a recurrance of an episode from April 2023: Series 1, Episode 3 - Symbols in Dreams with Dr Nigel Hamilton. See you in the New Year! ___ The questions we most often get asked usually come down to “What does it mean if I dream about ____?” We all want to know more about what our dreams are saying to us and how to interpret them, and people have been compiling manuals on dream symbolism since the advent of the written word. Even today there are hundreds of books on the subject online. But should we be attached to specific meanings? Does a tooth or cat or a car come with some universal meaning attached that is the same for everyone? In this episode, Laura and Dave welcome Dr Nigel Hamilton aboard the Dream Boat to talk about personal and universal symbols in dreams and how he works with them as a psychotherapist. Nigel is a highly experienced therapist, teacher, researcher and one of the world's leading pioneers in dream interpretation techniques. He is the founder of one the world's top Transpersonal Psychotherapy colleges, the Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy Education in London, co-founder of the DRI Centre for Dream Studies and the former UK Representative of the Inayatiyya Sufi Order International. He has spent years studying and pioneering techniques for working with dream symbolism and his book Awakening Through Dreams: Journeys Through the Inner Landscape covers some of his fascinating discoveries. He teaches workshops and leads courses on spiritual approaches to psychotherapy at CCPE. In this episode, Dr Hamilton discusses the symbolism of colours, symbols of transformation in the alchemical model, and how we can discern the personal from the universal. For our “Dream of the Week” feature, Nigel shares three brief dreams which marked particular steps in his own process. Let us know what you think, and submit a dream for us to explore on the podcast! *Trigger Warning - Suicidal thoughts and childhood abuse are briefly referred to in this episode* You've flown, you've travelled, you've had all the sex you can imagine in your lucid dreams. What now? Dr Nigel Hamilton joins us aboard the Dream Boat again, to talk about the experiments he and Robert Waggoner (heard in Season 1, Episode 1) have been asking lucid dreamers to do in their sleep. Starting from his observations as a therapist and dream worker that movements in dreams corresponded to changes in the psyche, Dr Hamilton tells Dave and Laura how the research has progressed to the current phase of asking experienced lucid dreamers to ask a series of questions when they are in a lucid dream, and he shares some of the remarkable experiences that followed. Along the way, they ask: If you are “in control” when you are lucid dreaming, who or what is answering your questions? Dr. Hamilton is co-Founder of the Dream Boat's sponsor, the DRI centre for dream studies, and he is the founder of the world-famous transpersonal psychotherapy training college, CCPE, in London. Your dreams are fascinating, too. Dave and Laura invite their old teacher Dr Nigel Hamilton back on board to talk about his Waking Dream Process, a therapeutic method for re-imagining a dream and revisiting it as a visualisation. It is used to expand, deepen and embody the experience of the dream and get to its essence. In this episode, Nigel talks about dreams as a journey, not just a narrative. He tells us how we can track consciousness travelling through the body during sleep, and why it is important to connect images to sensations and locate them in the body, and how this releases the transformative power of dreams. He shares images of transformation from his work as a therapist using the Waking Dream Process, including decapitation (as a good thing!) and an emerald green scarab beetle that represents the way out of a nightmare. He also talks about some of his own profound dream experiences that shaped his view of dreams and his development of the Waking Dream Process. For "Dream of the Week", Laura brings a client's dream about meeting a childhood friend in a fairground. The crew discuss how they would use the Waking Dream Process with this dream If you have a dream you'd like to share (either calling into the Dream Lab or having us read it out for Dream of the Week), get in touch via the links below. “[In death,] so many people experience – whether or not they had a religious conviction – the surrender to a state of consciousness, a state of being, so much greater than what they thought they were during this lifetime.” Three contemplative scholars and practitioners – Rev. Cynthia Carter Perilliat, Dr. Eva Natanya, and Dr. Nigel Hamilton – explore the difficult topic of mortality. In this episode, they will discuss how we can deal skilfully with the inevitable fact of death, and what can death and dying teach us about life and living. Drawing on the teachings of major religious traditions, such as Buddhism, Christianity, and Sufism, they will also talk about the transformations that our consciousness undergoes during the process of dying, and why meditating on death and impermanence can support our personal growth and the development of inner qualities. This dialogue was recorded as part of our event on Death and Rebirth organised in collaboration with Jamyang London Buddhist Centre, and it was moderated by Scott Snibbe, host and producer of the meditation podcast ‘A Skeptic's Path to Enlightenment'.The interview was recorded LIVE during our recent event on ‘Death and Rebirth'. "A brilliant man, our greatest President. But dévious, mister Kroeger....Dévious!"
Inside the Trump administration's deal with Mexico - will it solve the troubles at the border? Fareed and a panel discuss. And, can Kushner's plan deliver peace in the Middle East? Or is it dead on arrival? Guests: Shannon O'Neil, Jorge Castañeda, Dan Senor, Hanan Ashrawi, Dina Esfandiary, Nigel Hamilton
On May 14, 2019, author Nigel Hamilton delivered the George C. Marshall Foundation Lecture. In honor of the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, it is fitting we remember the men who ensured the great invasion took place: the U.S. commander in chief, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and his chief of staff of the U.S. Army, General George C. Marshall. Based on his new book, War and Peace, Nigel Hamilton tells how the two leaders overcame bitter British reluctance to bring an end to Europe's long nightmare. Nigel Hamilton is a best-selling and award-winning biographer of President John F. Kennedy, General Bernard "Monty" Montgomery, and President Bill Clinton, among other subjects. He is a senior fellow at the McCormack Graduate School, University of Massachusetts, Boston. Hamilton's most recent book, War and Peace: FDR's Final Odyssey: D-Day to Yalta, 1943-1945, is the final volume of his trilogy on how Franklin Roosevelt won World War II as U.S. commander in chief.
Lewis H. Lapham talks with Nigel Hamilton, author of War and Peace: FDR's Final Odyssey: D-Day to Yalta, 1943–1945.

We mark the the 70th anniversary of D Day. Not only one of the most significant events of the 20th Century, but one of the most significant decisions ever made by a President to send men into harms way. In a world in which decision making has become an expertise on to itself, when Presidential leadership is reexamined almost every day, it serves us well from both a historical and a contemporary perspective, to understand what really went into making that fateful decision, 70 years ago. How it changed the war, how it changed our history and what it might teach us about navigating a dangerous world today.Nigel Hamilton examines all of this as he looks at FDR in The Mantle of Command: FDR at War, 1941-1942.My conversation with Nigel Hamilton:
Hi my name is Noel Bell and today I am chatting to Nigel Hamilton director of the Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy Education (or CCPE) about the Dream Research Institute (or DRI). Launched in September 2012, the DRI is provided by the CCPE to promote research into the connection between dreams and well being from a spiritual perspective. The Institute supports and archives a synergy of research to advance our understanding of dreams. I recently met Nigel at the CCPE in London. Since its establishment in 1984, CCPE have grown to be the largest training centre for transpersonal psychotherapy in the UK, occupying a five storey Regency building on the banks of the Grand Union Canal in Little Venice. Noel Bell is available for both short and long term psychotherapy or counselling in London. I can see clients in Sydenham, SE26, serving Crystal Palace, Penge and Dulwich, (see here for more details: http://www.counselling-directory.org.uk/counsellors/noel-bell?uqs=759514 ) or Paddington, West London, serving St Johns Wood, Marylebone and Bayswater, (see here for more details: http://noelbell.net/counselling-london/counselling-paddington/ ). Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss biography which sells more books now than ever before; last year people in this country spent 115 million pounds on 12 and a half million copies of biographies. And it's not just in Britain that life stories are popular; the United States Library of Congress found recently that in the previous six months more people had read a biography than any other kind of book. But what drives this fascination in the lives of others; lives which have often long since passed. Why do the literary studies of often long dead characters make such popular books? And what is the role of the biographer who provides that account? Truthful chronicler, or inevitably biased re-inventor?With Richard Holmes, writer, biographer and the author of Sidetracks:Explorations of a Romantic Biographer; Nigel Hamilton, biographer, Director of the British Institute of Biography and Professor of Biography, De Montfort University, Leicester; Amanda Foreman, biographer of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire.
