I'm taking you through Cosgrove Lock on the Grand Union Canal—engine humming, lock gates creaking, water rushing as I work the paddles. It's a sunny spring day, cherry blossoms are out, and after a long, muddy winter, I'm finally moving.Simon, a continuous cruiser, lends a hand and we chat about why days like this—calm, bright—make it all worthwhile. It's real-time canal life: the windlass clanks and the boat steadies. No polish, just the water, the quirks, it's a raw slice of the cut.Robbie Cumming's Canal Boat Podcast is produced by Urban Podcasts.

Two friends, Karen and Emma, who say they met when both were post-covid slumped on the sofa and doing no exercise, take Clare for a walk along the Thames Path near Reading in Berkshire. Their friendship is based on walking and they're notching up the miles, including the Grand Union Canal (188 miles), the Ridgeway (72 miles) and 150 miles of the Portuguese Camino. Karen says that “Emma has gone from a neighbour I sort of knew to my very best friend. We have laughed so hard together we could barely stand; we have howled with pain together; we have picked each other up when the other could barely go on; we have gotten so grumpy with each other that we could barely speak to each other but always found a way back to friendship”. Clare hears their inspirational story of building a supportive and healing friendship as they ramble riverside one morning in late Spring. They start at the end of the Kennet and Avon canal and walk for around 9 miles to Henley on Thames. This is a section of a long distance route the friends are completing, coast to coast, from Bristol to the Isle of Grain on the Thames Estuary. Producer: Karen Gregor

In Episode 310, all those months ago, Paul and Eli attempted to complete the whole of the Celandine Walk in 6 hours. They absolutely failed and had to abandon the walk because Eli had somewhere better to be, apparently! However, this failure got under their skin, and they decided that they both need closure. This week, the Cheap Chaps decide to finish off what they started and endeavour to complete that walk, taking them from Swakeleys Park to the Grand Union Canal in Cowley. That means there is a good five miles of walking ahead of them! Along the way, they decide to also cram in another modular “Price of Shite” and guess the prices of seven weird and wonderful charity shop finds. Who will win the most “p'twings” by the end of the journey? Why do they keep getting lost? What happens when they run out of places to walk to and who smokes too much and nearly whites out? Shilpa in her own words:   “I'm a British Indian gal who is about to hit 60 and feel that I am really only just starting to explore the wonderful joy of outdoor adventures.    I am happiest when I'm on the water on my paddle board, or cycling along a canal, or walking in the beautiful English countryside, or body boarding in Cornwall.    I leaned to swim in my late 40's and this just opened up a whole new world of paddle sports.    My biggest personal adventure was this summer (2022) when I paddle boarded on a SUP board from London to Nottinghamshire, some 165 miles (and 144 locks) along the vertical length of the amazing Grand Union Canal.    This was such a joyful journey and revealed so much about myself that I had not been aware of - particularly how much I love to meet new people and how caring and kind strangers are.    Since then I have been exploring SUP journeys where I carry my camping kit on my SUP board and I absolutely love doing this.    I am extremely grateful to British Canoeing who accepted me as a #ShePaddles Ambassador and this really helped me to go out of my comfort zone and explore new adventures.”   New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday at 7am UK time - Subscribe so you don't miss out.    To support the mission to increase the amount of female role models in the media. My guest in this episode is Mark Harrison. A friend of a previous guest Dan French, Mark listened to episode 52 and liked it so much he decided he wanted to come on the show, which is a process that always pleases me. In amongst the music we talk about: ·        His Grandfather's houseboat, Calisto, on the Grand Union Canal ·        Born in West London in 1962 then moving to South Africa as a 10-year-old. ·        Returning from that strict and strait-laced environment four years later to a UK at the   height of the punk era·        Getting his black belt in Kick Boxing at the age of 42 ·        Becoming a mature student and graduating with a BA Hons at the age of 47 ·        Starting a I year contract in the Czech Republic in 2005 and never leaving! ·        Marrying Daria in 2010 ·        Starting his own company (called Calisto) in 2012 ·        The delights of train travel in Europe ·        And last but not least, the joy of Bruce Springsteen and seeing him live in Vienna, Prague  & Berlin. Like myself, Mark doesn't just listen to Bruce, and he made some great song choices for this episode: 60's                     The Beatles                     Michelle 70's                     Pink Floyd                        Wish You Were Here 80's                     Bruce Springsteen       Hungry Heart 90's                     Genesis                               I Can't Dance 00's                     Kylie Minogue                Can't Get You Out of My Head 10's                     Emeli Sande                     Breathing Under Water 20's                     Texas                                    Mr Haze We also touched on a wide range of artists and songs during our chat , all of whom can be found in this playlist https://open.spotify.com/playlist/41TCP4zadSAHK8WjVS7cZV?si=c9fb1cff028746d3 Enjoy!

The Grand Union Canal Race (GUCR145) is a legendary 145 mile continuous race from Gas Street Basin in Birmingham, to Little Venice in London, entirely on the canal towpath. Most people try and complete a few 100 milers before even considering signing up. The distance is a real challenge and even experienced runners struggle, with a DNF rate typically of 50%. Rachel isn't most people, and with a longest run of 70 miles decided to enter a race twice that distance, without a coach, balancing training around work and family, during lockdown. With few opportunities for training races this was a huge undertaking and a huge test of determination. A moorhen chirps outside your porthole, geese honk hello as they pass by, now and again a kingfisher flies close in a flash of blue And if you're lucky - and you wake early enough - you'll even catch the dawn chorus bursting into life in the quiet morning air. This, this is boatlife on the Grand Union Canal, London. Welcome aboard. Ruth Stokes is author of The Armchair Activist’s Handbook (Silvertail Books) and a content designer in the charity sector. In a former life, she was a journalist for the likes of the Guardian, The Ecologist and New Internationalist.

Nighttime on Still Waters

A lifetime ago, almost to the day, it turned cooler after an uncustomary warm and dry couple of weeks. Synoptic charts show high pressure moving up the country dragging with it frontal systems. No doubt, on that day, some looked at the clouds and grumbled. And life carried on as it had the days before. Engines shunted in sidings. People waited at bus stops. Shop tills rang out. Dogs barked. And, in the cabin of a small boat moored on the bank of the Grand Union, I took my first breath of air; sweet with cow pasture, and nettles, and paraffin. Journal entry:“27th April, Tuesday. This morning dawned with frost and golden washes of light.  I discovered a new patch of cowslips and hawthorns budding, and the first mallow and bugle clusters shouldering their way into the sunshine.  It should have been perfect.  The birds sang with a brilliant clarity managing to subsume the aural gash of traffic. But it wasn’t. Everything felt a little off kilter.  My shoulders and legs ached.  - Not so much in pain – just an awareness of them being there,  So that walking was not an automatic act,  But a conscious and deliberative one.  Consequently, it felt awkward, clumsy – not natural. The morning chill lost that exhilarating feel and sank into my bones.  A racing mind that gravitates to the dark edges Where formless unease lurks. It was not that I was untouched by the world in which I walked,  Those spots of beauty – touches of joy,  But sometimes perfection and beauty lie in the small details Not the whole. Even Eden had its serpent. Et in Arcadia ego ‘Even in Arcadia , there I am.’”    Episode InformationIn this episode I talk about my mother’s memoirs that she wrote about her time living on the canal. She considers her five to nine life as precious in which she can explore, dance, travel and "do all the other bits away from work". Tayo believes that the black experience is not a monolith and that representation matters in all segments of our society. She believes the world is a place to learn from and that travelling is just one big school trip. Adventure and travel is her "side hustle" and in this podcast chat we talk about independent travel, Nigeria, food, dancing and how it feels to be "othered" in a predominantly white environment. A listener has asked, "After we left the boat and went to live in a house, did canals continue to play much of a part in my life?"After the boat, we moved to Kings Langley, Hertfordshire. It was there I grew up and found my place within the world. At the time it was still a fairly small village. The main industry was the Ovaltine factory that bordered the Grand Union Canal which bisected the village. Working boats were still a relatively common sight. As well as through traffic from London to Birmingham and other cities to the north, they serviced the local industries; Ovaltine, Toovey's Mill, the John Dickinson mills at Nash Mills and Apsley, and Rose’s Lime Juice at Boxmoor Warf, Hemel Hempstead. As time went on, the number of working decreased, but the canal remained as a key part of the village and social topography and geography. “The canal wasn’t part of my life in a deliberate way. But that was because it was unconsciously so much part of our environment; the geographies of growing up. The playground and classroom that we all just took for granted.”Journal entry:“25th March, Thursday.Tonight, the air is warm and still. The cabin doors are open.  The sounds and scents of a spring-time night         fill the boat.It is difficult to tell where the boat ends and the night begins” Episode DetailsIn this episode I read a few lines from John Clare’s (1820) The Shepherd’s Calendar. Today's guest helps organisations identify the gaps within their HR process where technology can be leveraged, freeing up their time to be less tactical and play a more strategic role.  Kevyn Rustici is a Human Capital Management Consultant working for ADP, which provides award-winning payroll and HR solutions to companies in over 140 countries. With a degree in biology Kevyn adopts a scientific approach to the world of HR and is (in his words) obsessed by technology and data - and more specifically how it is underused by organisations when making crucial decisions related to talent recruitment and development.  "Without data you're just another person with an opinion"   W Edwards DemingWe discuss how so many companies realised their technological gaps when the pandemic struck, described by Kevyn and one of his clients as"like steering the Titanic into the Erie Canal"(or for those not familiar with New York, maybe the Grand Union Canal in UK!).  The pandemic has forced companies to realise their outdated processes and have embraced new technologies - and much faster than they thought possible in so many cases.On-boarding is in area where the gap was really noticeable, with the whole process having to shift to digital, and Kevyn shares his tips on how companies can address this. And we discuss how an external programme such as sheep herding, once Covid restrictions are lifted, can play a really helpful role in this area. Are employees so lucky to be working for you or are you so lucky to have employees working for you? - a question Kevyn asks his clients which really makes them think. People before profits is a shift that is starting to make positive progress in the States, with presentee-ism being less of a focus.  Do you feel this is happening in your organisation? If this episode has prompted any questions, go ahead and ask! A first-hand account remembering life aboard a small boat with a small family during the harsh winter of 1962/3.The time we lived on the Kathy were always very precious to Mum and she later wrote about them. Her writings evocatively describe life-aboard at a time when the canals were beginning to transition from working to increasingly residential and leisure use. In this week's episode, I read an extract from her writings in which she describes the winter of 1962/63. Journal entry:“16th December, Wednesday.Venus hangs above Bearley Lock. A hard diamante stud puncturing the smooth bowl of lacquered blue and satsuma orange fire at the rim We stand above the pool eroded by the summer-pastured cows. The water looks like spilt Indian ink that would go on forever and everPenny sniffs at the torn soil and a lone duck slips into the air.Later today, the lacquered bowl will become roughened and dull, and rain will whip and pit the mirrored surface of the water. But that is later. This is now… and we are both absorbed in our own worlds.”Episode InformationPhotographs of the Kathy and our family on the boat can be found on the podcast’s Facebook page, Instagram, and Twitter accounts. In this episode I mention the delightful Weather Folk-Lore of the Sea and Superstitions of the Scottish Fishermen.General DetailsIn the intro and the outro, Saint-Saen's The Swan is performed by Karr and Bernstein (1961) and available on CC at archive.org. The canal continues to thread its silent way through autumn. There’s a hint now of mist on colder dawns. Today, it lies still and steely. Penny trots ahead, tail up, relaxed, contentedly sniffing the trail and foil of the unseen world. The hedges are garlanded with crimson, rosehip lanterns and bryony’s poisonous fire. In the latest programme, Mishal Husain introduces dispatches from journalists and writers reflecting the range of life across the UK. She begins and ends in Edinburgh. First, the BBC's Social Affairs Correspondent, Michael Buchanan, reveals how a renowned city centre doctor is using one public health emergency - Covid-19 - to tackle another - drug-related deaths among the homeless. Could a notoriously difficult medical and social problem prove amenable to new approaches? Cabin fever is a literal risk for those living aboard narrow boats at the moment. And while self-sufficiency is a characteristic of those who live afloat, as Lois Pryce has been discovering among users on the Grand Union Canal, their ingenuity is being tested by the relatively prosaic requirements for water and fuel. It's once again possible for those in England who are looking to move house to visit potential new homes in person. What, though, of those who are already part of a chain with buyers and sellers ready to go ahead? Lesley Curwen, a business reporter for more than three decades, finds herself in just that situation. Will she make her dream move to the West Country or will there be a last-minute hitch? Foster carers become accustomed to all types of placements. Emily Unia's parents have decades of experience but even so it's been special for them to share the last several weeks with a young boy and his baby sister who arrived just days before lockdown. She reveals how they've all been coping. And, back in the Scottish capital, Christopher Harding provides an amusing insight into the world of home schooling as his three children adjust to their new teachers and lessons. How do the ambitions of the new staff fare amid the realities of the schoolroom? Producer: Simon Coates

For Feargal Sharkey the perfect cast is a lifelong obsession. It's the moment when man and river exist in perfect harmony. It's a passion he shares with generations of artists before him on the chalk streams of Hertfordshire. Dame Juliana Berners, Prioress of St Mary of Sopwell wrote one of the earliest books on the etiquette of hunting, hawking and fishing in the 14th century. Her work influenced Izaak Walton who opens The Compleat Angler with a vivid description of a walk from Tottenham to the waters that Feargal fishes today. Growing up in Derry with the mountains and trout-rich rivers of Donegal on his doorstep, Feargal fished from childhood, but when the punk fame of The Undertones reached its peak he found himself in north London with only the Grand Union Canal for company. Discovering the chalk streams on the edge of the city brought fishing back into his life and since then he's dedicated himself to the preservation of these waters. England contains most of the world's chalk streams, perfect habitat for trout, waterfowl, otter and water vole, but abstraction for drinking water and pollution from farming and industry has pushed many of these rivers to the edge of destruction. Feargal shares his determination to save the chalk streams with Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough and instructs her in the Zen art of fly fishing. Producer: Alasdair Cross

Tiny Johnsons Island sits in contrast to the hustle and bustle of Brentford and West London surrounding it. At the confluence of the Rivers Thames and Brent and the Grand Union Canal, the area was important historically for the barges that had carried goods from Birmingham. Nearby boat yards continue to repair and renovate vessels of all types while shiny new developments overlook the island - a mixture of old and new alongside one another. Helen Mark meets the community of artists who work on Johnsons Island and discovers how its nature and surroundings inspire them. A small gallery has been set up to exhibit their work but also to honour the late local character and 'naive artist' Barry Jones - an accomplished jazz musician who sold art works for beer money. The island is shared by one of the boatyards, complete with wet dock, chickens, bees and allotments. Yet many don't know of the island's existence, let alone its history.
