Once again we've come to the end of another series and once again we're going to end with our popular Q&A session. Thanks for listening and joining us on board the Dream Boat this time round. We love having you here and enjoy reading your thoughts and questions.   Dave pops back on board to join Laura for the wrap up and they tackle some great dream themes in this session, including toilet dreams and funeral dreams, discussing their psychological implications and the importance of ‘letting go' for personal transformation. Whereas toilet dreams can reflect bodily needs or deeper psychological issues, funeral dreams signify the need for ritualistic closure and rebirth.   They discuss how dreams can serve as a reflection of unmet needs in waking life and how the process of letting go can be both challenging and necessary for growth, leading to deeper self-awareness and emotional processing.   They also address the impact of intense dreams on sleep quality and the significance of sleep hygiene and mindfulness in achieving restful sleep. Laura discusses mindfulness techniques from her book Nine Steps to a Mindful Life Without Meditating which can help calm the mind before sleep.   Laura's book: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Nine-Steps-Mindful-Without-Meditating/dp/0995488908   END OF SHOWNOTES   Your dreams are worth inquiring about too! What happens at the intersection of dreams and consciousness? In this conversation, Laura is joined again by Maria to explore the profound notion of one very powerful question: WHO IS THE DREAMER. Their guest to help dismantle this philosophical dream knot is Dr. Newton Kondaveti, of Quantum Life University near Hyderabad in India. Dr Kondaveti shares his insights into the relationship between dreams and consciousness, the significance of lucid dreaming, which can pinpoint the path to a higher awareness. He also considers the concept of the Akashic records, a cosmic library or energetic archive of all universal events, thoughts, words and emotions. They discuss how dreams serve as a tool for self-discovery and can alleviate suffering.  Dreams contain hidden dimensions of our existence with dreams revealing hidden dimensions not accessible in waking life, as well as providing insights into past and future experiences.   Dr. Kondaveti discusses his work at the Quantum Life University (QLU), emphasizing the importance of understanding dreams in the context of spiritual science and personal growth and the university's aim of blend spirituality with scientific understanding.   QLU is on qluglobal.com Insta:qlugobal Youtube.com/qluglobal   END OF SHOWNOTES   Your dreams are worth inquiring about too! Laura announces the DRI's first retreat in the home of dream incubation – Epidavros in Greece.  Twelve lucky people will join her and Sarah Janes from Dream Mysteries in May (see how to join the retreat link below*) for a full immersion in the ancient temple sleep practices for healing. Laura and Melinda run through the power of these ancient rituals before Laura interviews Sarah Janes about her fascinating work in this area.   Sarah Janes talks about how she became fascinated by the power of dreams during childhood and what led her from jettisoning her career as a US show promoter to become a specialist in ancient dream cults through the development of her work at Dream Mysteries.   Laura and Sarah discuss the beauty of Epidavros and how its magic is spell binding, especially wrapped around the myths and practices of the Greek healing God Asklepios.  Sarah Jane reveals how retreatants are often called by the God himself in dreams to come out to the sanctuary and how they find her online after such a dream. Laura discusses how the God turned up for her once in a spiritual workshop before she became a psychotherapist which led her to visit the site at Epidavros and, like Sarah Janes, the visit felt like a powerful ‘coming home'.   Sarah runs through what the retreatants will find at the temple and how the group will try out sleep hypnosis, purification practices, sound work and dream theatre work, in similar ways to the ancients who experienced dreaming there thousands of years ago.   The two dream researchers also look at a similar incubation project in a recreated oasis in the Egyptian desert and the links between the ancient Egyptian dream incubation practices with the cult of Asklepios in the Ancient Greek and Roman worlds.   *If you want to join them in May the Retreat Link is here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/divine-dreaming-retreat-in-greece-tickets-1236007895889?aff=oddtdtcreator   Your dreams are worth inquiring about too! Laura and Dave go head-to-head with an AI trained to interpret dreams. Who (or what) comes up with the most meaningful interpretations? You decide! Elswhere is a dream journaling app that offers interpretations powered by a GPT (generative pre-trained transformer), otherwise known as a generative AI. Kelly Bulkeley and Sheldon Juncker have been instrumental in creating and training Elsewhere to interpret dreams, and they come aboard the Dream Boat to discuss the intersection of technology and dreaming, specifically the use of AI in dream interpretation. The guests discuss the accuracy and insights provided by the AI interpretations, which draw on the work of Freud and Jung, among others. In an extended “Dream of the Week” segment, Sheldon shares a dream for Dave and Laura to explore and interpret, and then the group hears what Elsewhere had to say about it. What will the influence of AI be on dream interpretation, and are there potential benefits of using AI as a tool for self-reflection and understanding? Hopefully it's collaboration, not competition.  Kelly Bulkeley, Ph.D., is a dream researcher and author with a background in the psychology of religion. He is director of the Sleep and Dream Database (as discussed on episode 2 of this series of the Dream Boat), a Senior Editor of the APA journal Dreaming, and a former President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams.  Sheldon Juncker, B.Sc. is a software engineer who works in the fields of dream research, data analysis, and artificial intelligence, who in addition to his work with Dr Bulkeley on Elsewhere also helps to maintain the Sleep and Dream Database. To celebrate World Lucid Dreaming Day (12 April), we're replaying our interview with Robert Waggoner, a leading expert on lucid dreaming. One of the world's top lucid dreamers, Robert Waggoner, joins Dave and Laura for a fascinating journey into the often so-called “rare” dream state of lucid dreaming. But as Robert will show, it's not that rare for some people, and you can try it too.     Author of Lucid Dreaming: Gateway to the Inner Self and Lucid Dreaming Plain and Simple (with Caroline McCready), Robert shares how he has had over a thousand lucid dreams since he discovered he could do it whilst at high school in the US on reading Carlos Castaneda's books about Don Juan. We hear what he has learned from his lucid dreams, from tips on becoming lucid in a dream to answers to some of his questions about the nature of consciousness, which he started to explore once he got bored with flying and walking through walls in his dreams. It turns out there's more to lucid dreaming than manipulating the dream reality, more than wish fulfilment, and certainly more than making yourself more productive.  We look at the history of research into lucid dreaming. What is lucid dreaming, according to Robert Robert's own techniques and how to try this out for yourself. Lucid games of flying, walking through walls and having sex. How to stay lucid and not wake up.  The impact of the film Inception on Lucid Dreaming Neuroscience studies on the state Robert's own principles of Lucid Dreaming and its gateway to the deeper state of amazing spiritual experiences and being connected to a larger awareness. For the Dream of the Week, Robert also shares his lucid dream in which his mother-in-law returns from the land of the dead with an important message for him.  Mentioned in this episode: Lucid Advice website (lucid-dreaming-advice.com) Lucid Dreaming Magazine (Luciddreamingmagazine.com)         Let us know what you think, and submit a dream for us to explore on the podcast!  Instagram @thedreamboatpodcast FaceBook @dreamboatpodcast Twitter @dreamboatpod DRI website: driccpe.org.uk/contact  This podcast is a project of the DRI, the centre for dream studies at CCPE, the psychotherapy college overlooking the canals at London's scenic Little Venice. A 14-year-old boy who was curious about his dreams asked two questions before going to sleep: “Can you dream in colour or in black and white?” And, “Do you need light to dream?” Laurel and Hardy helped bring answers that night, and those answers were unequivocal, funny, and meaningful, and a few decades later Damien Moore has come on the podcast to talk about that experience and some of his other fascinating dreams. Those familiar with The Dream Boat Podcast will know that in each series we have a “Dream Lab” episode in which we invite two dreamers to share a dream that we then discuss from different angles to see how it relates to the dreamer's life and what kind of meaning can be found in it. We always enjoy talking about those dreams, and people seem to enjoy listening to them, so for Series 3, we're expanding the format. In the last episode we heard about Yas's recurring dream of losing her children on the train, and its resolution. “We are engines with millions of feedback loops… And dreams are a balancing process” We are joined by well-known U.K. Jungian analyst Dr Roderick Peters who's been working in the field of dreams for more than 40 years. We look at the Jungian perspective on dreaming and its symbolic world of archetypes, opposites and individual and collective consciousness. Roderick recalls a powerful dream that he had when he was aged 3 or 4 about the nature of individuation and the separation of a child's consciousness from that of its mother. This amazing dream has stayed with him all his life and set him on the path to studying his dreams on a daily basis since childhood. He also talks about his career as a doctor working in a sleep lab before he decided to become a Jungian psychoanalyst. Finally, Roderick joins in with offering interpretations for this episode's Dream of the Week, sent in from a listener who goes to a dream theatre and meets a famous actress. For Roderick as a Jungian, dreams are where we explore “the organs of our psyche through the archetypes.” Dr Roderick Peters has written several books including Living With Dreams published by Andre Deutsch. He lectures and has written many interesting papers which can be found on his website. His has a therapeutic practice in London and Surrey and is a member of the British Psychoanalytic Council.   In this episode: Dr Peters' book Living With Dreams Website: www.roderickpeters.info He still has a therapeutic practice and is a member of the British Psychoanalytic Council.   Let us know what you think, and submit a dream for us to explore on the podcast! “Am I dreaming?” is the question you need to answer to become lucid in your dreams, and that question will also make you question what it really means to be awake. In this episode, Dave and Laura speak with educator, author and dream researcher Ryan Hurd, who teaches graduate level courses at the University for Peace in Costa Rica and National University in California, and is the driving force behind dreamstudies.org, an essential resource for anyone interested in dreams in general and lucid dreaming in particular. Ryan is interested in consciousness studies at the intersections of ecology, spirituality and material culture. His latest work is Lucid talisman: Forgotten lore.  In an open, personal, and informative conversation, Ryan tells Dave and Laura about how he started out as an archaeologist but now searches for knowledge and treasure in the depths of consciousness as revealed through dreams. He shares some of his vast knowledge on lucid dreaming, including lucid dreaming induction (learning how to have more lucid dreams) and the use of totems and the lucid talisman. In the Dream of the Week, he shares a heart-warming dream in which he and his infant son find that his home's basement has become a huge, church-like space. We're taking a little break this week, so here's a recurrance of an episode from April 2023: Series 1, Episode 3 - Symbols in Dreams with Dr Nigel Hamilton. See you in the New Year! ___ The questions we most often get asked usually come down to “What does it mean if I dream about ____?” We all want to know more about what our dreams are saying to us and how to interpret them, and people have been compiling manuals on dream symbolism since the advent of the written word. Even today there are hundreds of books on the subject online. But should we be attached to specific meanings? Does a tooth or cat or a car come with some universal meaning attached that is the same for everyone?  In this episode, Laura and Dave welcome Dr Nigel Hamilton aboard the Dream Boat to talk about personal and universal symbols in dreams and how he works with them as a psychotherapist. Nigel is a highly experienced therapist, teacher, researcher and one of the world's leading pioneers in dream interpretation techniques. He is the founder of one the world's top Transpersonal Psychotherapy colleges, the Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy Education in London, co-founder of the DRI Centre for Dream Studies and the former UK Representative of the Inayatiyya Sufi Order International. He has spent years studying and pioneering techniques for working with dream symbolism and his book Awakening Through Dreams: Journeys Through the Inner Landscape covers some of his fascinating discoveries. He teaches workshops and leads courses on spiritual approaches to psychotherapy at CCPE.  In this episode, Dr Hamilton discusses the symbolism of colours, symbols of transformation in the alchemical model, and how we can discern the personal from the universal.  For our “Dream of the Week” feature, Nigel shares three brief dreams which marked particular steps in his own process.      Let us know what you think, and submit a dream for us to explore on the podcast! Beyond lucidity:  For experienced lucid dreamers, at least some of them, the ability to live out endless fantasies gets tired pretty quickly, and they start to use their lucid dreams to explore the nature of their minds, their dreams, consciousness, and existence itself.  In this episode, Laura and Dave talk to someone who has done exactly that, and written about it, and who teaches people who want to do the same: Melinda Powell. They talk about how dreams have shaped and influenced Melinda's life and work, and the powerful messages she has received in dreams, including the directive to teach and write about what she has learned from paying attention to her inner world. Melinda is one of the Co-Founders of the DRI Centre for Dream Studies; she is a psychotherapist and teacher of dreamwork and the art of lucid dreaming, and is the author of two books about dreams, “The Hidden Lives of Dreams: What they can tell us and how they can change our World”, and “Lucid Surrender: the alchemy of the soul in lucid dreaming”. We have talked about parasomnias - the official term for a variety of disturbed sleep patterns – and nightmare treatment with other guests, and in this episode, Laura and Dave talk to Linda about her work with PTSD and dreams, and how GAIA brings together best-practice trauma treatment and Jungian active imagination to turn PTSD into PTSG: Post-Traumatic Spiritual Growth. ...By popular demand! As Dave and Laura come towards the end of the second series, they consider two listeners' dreams through the lenses of different interpretations. Trainee psychotherapist Kit presents her fascinating maid of honour dream, in which the most beautiful silk dress she is going to wear to the wedding of a childhood friend is stolen and worn by her father. How dare he! Dave and Laura explore the wonderful imagery of the operation of Union, the Royal Wedding, or coniunctio, through the lenses of Jung, Freud, and the DRI's Waking Dream technique. We journey through gorgeous conch shells, royal blue velvet cushions in an Uber and dingy basement bars, to look at the delicate balance between masculine and feminine energy and what this means for dreamer Kit. Then Ayurvedic doctor and osteopath Angela joins the Dream Lab to present her magnificent seven-foot Australian shaman dream. Dave and Laura accompany her on her dreamtime spiritual sojourn as the dreamer returns to the family home to meet her real-life friend and mystic teacher before she encounters a beautiful indigenous Australian hunter in the attic. She then returns to eat clams, another powerful spiritual image of pilgrimage for the dreamer, with her sister. Dave and Laura look through the various lenses: Jung, alchemy, the elements and the amazing Waking Dream Technique to unearth interpretations. What would it be like for the dreamer to become the hunter? And what happens when she eats the clams? But as the lenses turn Dave rightly reminds us at the end of Dream Lab that despite these interpretative explorations the dream always belongs to the dreamer. In our world of rapidly advancing AI, we are being forced to ask ourselves, “What is consciousness?” Science fiction author Philip K Dick's book “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, which inspired the Bladerunner films, invites us to consider what it is to have – or to be – an artificial consciousness, and the role that dreams have in shaping that consciousness. Instead of cogito ergo sum – I think therefore I am – will it be ego somniare ergo sum – I dream therefore I am? The Dream Boat podcast is starting an occasional series called “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” to explore these questions, and for this first instalment, Laura and Dave talk to Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience Katja Valli about organic consciousness, what it is, and how she studies it. Photo credit: University of Skövde HR Professor Valli defines consciousness as the ability to have a subjective experience, and asks whether machines can have experiences or are only capable of producing predetermined reactions. Dreams, she says, are an integral part of consciousness. And on the subject of non-human animals, she tells us why we think they dream and why it's hard to know for sure – but she says it would be presumptuous to assume that only humans are conscious. Along the way, Dave, Laura and Professor Valli talk about theories of dreaming, the evolutionary role of dreaming, and experiments that show the neurological connections between learning, memory and dreams. Professor Valli shares a wonderful and (and frightening!) dream of an old couple and the horrible wartime experiences they survived together. When they discuss it, it turns out there may be a more positive interpretation available. Your dreams are wonderful, too. They take a journey through the ancient worlds of Greece and Egypt to look at how the Asclepion dream temples which spread throughout the Mediterranean for hundreds of years became the prototype hospitals of today. As Laura says they were a mashup of modern-day hospital, come spa, come cinema complex. Laura looks at how the cult of the Greek healing God Asclepios grew in influence and how huge Asclepion centres such as Epidaurus on the Greek mainland became important sites of dream healing and entertainment centres with its famous amphitheatre, staging Greek dramas and music. They discuss Laura's research into the Asclepios method of dream incubation with its fascinating symbology of five key images such as snakes and dogs as signs of healing and the use of special womb-like caves called Abatons to conjure up and incubate healing dreams. We learn how Laura experiments with dreamers in workshops and dream retreats with stunning outcomes after they build their own abaton sanctuaries out of pop-up tents and then explore Greek myths whose archetypes contain potent energy that still impact us today. As Laura says this is about the power of ritual as preparation to incubate the creative imagination and the setting of intention before going to sleep. We look briefly at the mystery school work of Jean Houston and the writings of Edward Tick who have also explored the influence of these ancient sites. In Dream of the Week Laura and Dave look at a listener's snake dream. In the dream a white snake comes out of a photo and wraps itself around the woman's finger. Is it poisonous, the dreamer asks? What would an Asklepion dream guide, known as a psychotherapeute, make of this dream and how can this dream's message help the dreamer? Your dreams are fascinating, too. *Trigger Warning - Suicidal thoughts and childhood abuse are briefly referred to in this episode* You've flown, you've travelled, you've had all the sex you can imagine in your lucid dreams. What now? Dr Nigel Hamilton joins us aboard the Dream Boat again, to talk about the experiments he and Robert Waggoner (heard in Season 1, Episode 1) have been asking lucid dreamers to do in their sleep.  Starting from his observations as a therapist and dream worker that movements in dreams corresponded to changes in the psyche, Dr Hamilton tells Dave and Laura how the research has progressed to the current phase of asking experienced lucid dreamers to ask a series of questions when they are in a lucid dream, and he shares some of the remarkable experiences that followed.  Along the way, they ask: If you are “in control” when you are lucid dreaming, who or what is answering your questions? Dr. Hamilton is co-Founder of the Dream Boat's sponsor, the DRI centre for dream studies, and he is the founder of the world-famous transpersonal psychotherapy training college, CCPE, in London.  Your dreams are fascinating, too. Let the dream roll begin! Dave and Laura welcome UK based shaman Evelyn McDonald on board the Dream Boat with her drum, rattle and incense, and drift off into the shamanic dream space.  Eve talks about her work as a medicine woman, an ancient spiritual healing practice at the heart of many indigenous cultures since the beginning of time. She had the gift as a child growing up in Grenada and was finally called to follow its healing path after a career in the corporate world when she came to the U.K. The team looks at how shamanic practice links with Lucid Dreaming and the work of Arnie Mindell who wrote the Dreaming Body and runs the Process Work Institute in the US.  They enter the shamanic consciousness, a dreamy world of dream journeys, soul retrievals and vision quests, all to the beat of Eve's amazing drum and rattle. (Dave is drummed into a trance pretty early on!) Prepare to be transported into another realm.  The Dream of the Week opens up the universe of creation held in an enormous sphere as we enter the cosmic dance. This is a dream space of harmony and oneness with Eve's shamanic interpretation of attunement and vibration.  Dave and Laura absorb the dream's deeper message before Eve and Dave rattle and drum out the session. Waking in a cold sweat, waking yourself up as you cry out in fear to find yourself in your own bed but still filled with feelings of horror or dread from a disturbing dream – we've all had nightmares, and for people who experience them frequently, they can be disruptive and distressing. Enter Prof Michael Schredl of the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, Germany, who has been spent 30 years in the sleep lab and working with patients and who has researched the efficacy of psychological treatments like Image Rehearsal Therapy (IRT). Michael talks to Dave and Laura about: the difference between nightmares and night terrors causes and factors of nightmare frequency the relationship between waking attitudes and nightmare content how particular images trigger different emotions for individuals but how the basic pattern of a dream gives hints as to what experience is being dramatized in the dream. the difference between idiopathic (not related to real-life experience) and post-traumatic nightmares Image Rehearsal Therapy (IRT), its applications and limitations the important role of self-empowerment in dealing with nightmares By the end, Michael can advise us all to “Have nice dreams – and even if it's a nightmare, you know what to do.” Appropriately, the Dream of the Week is a nightmare of a plane flying into a wall of water and being crushed in ice. Michael shares his thoughts on how the dreamer might overcome their helplessness and find an active solution to the scenario. Your dreams are fascinating, too! Fire, floods, sex and death. Flying and falling. Coming apart and putting the pieces back together to be more of yourself than you ever were before. Finding the gold within. Welcome to your dreams of personal transformation, and the symbolic system that can guide you through them: Alchemy. If you've heard of it, it might be from Harry Potter or maybe as the mystical antecedent to modern chemistry. Or maybe you've heard Laura and Dave talking about it on the Dream Boat! In this episode, they give a brief overview of alchemy as a symbolic system that describes the stages of change in the psyche, originally identified by Jung in his reading of medieval mystical texts and still used in analytical psychology and taught on the Diploma in Integrative Transpersonal Counselling and Psychotherapy at CCPE in London. Included in this discussion: The 4 stages of the alchemical model Seven major “operations” or processes that help change occur Images in dreams that signify the stages and operations The symbolic elements – earth, water, fire and air – and the aspects of consciousness they represent And the Dream of the Week is a magical dream of transformation aided by a shaman in the desert under a starry sky, leading to the emergence of a golden snake. Dave and Laura talk about the rich alchemical imagery and what it might mean for the dreamer. Don't you wish you had dreams like that? Your dreams are fascinating, too.
