Welcome to the Fore Golfers Network/Michigan Golf Live Podcast Ep 399 - Meet Kimberly Dinh - US Women's Mid Am Champion No amateur golfer in the nation has been on a roll quite like Kimberly Dinh, winner of the 2023 US Women's Mid Am (press release below). The remarkable story of Dinh - a research scientist for Dow - is one you don't want to miss.  To help color in the story even more, we're also joined by her teacher, PGA Pro Kyle Martin The Fortress GC in Frankenmuth, MI. ---------------- Subscribe to the FGN Podcast Watch FGN videos on YouTube Check out our other sports pod: Church Pew Sports TEXT or CALL (989) 272-2383 to share your thoughts, comments, suggestions, and questions     ------------ NATIONAL CHAMPION: Midland's Kimberly Dinh Wins U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur     ELVERSON, Pa. – Midland's Kimberly Dinh rallied from a 3-down deficit by winning six of the final seven holes to claim the 36th U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship Thursday.    The 31-year-old associate research scientist at DOW Chemical and GAM Women's Player of the Year the last two years, beat Kelsey Chugg of Salt Lake City, Utah, the 2017 champion, 2-up in the title match on the North Course at Stonewall.    "In college, I never really played in any USGA events, mostly because by the time the summer came around, I was burned out and I didn't want to travel,” she said. “So having an opportunity to compete in a USGA championship after grad school, after college, has been awesome, and to win it, just incredible.”    Dinh, who trailed in the match from the fifth hole through the 13th, tied the match by winning 12 and 13 with pars and 14 with a birdie. She lost hole 15 with a bogey, then won 16 with a bogey to tie the match again when Chugg made double-bogey.    Dinh then took the lead for the first time at 17 with a conceded birdie-2 on the par 3, and then birdied the final hole with a nine-foot putt to secure the 2-up victory.    “To lose a couple holes pretty quickly was a little bit frustrating, but I just kind of dug deep and never really panicked,” said Dinh. “Kelsey was playing great golf, but both of us were going to make mistakes at some point, so I just kind of had to weather that and keep playing. I said to myself, ‘I'll keep putting one good swing on the ball after another and see where it takes me.'”    Dinh, who hired Stonewall caddie Mark Dalton for the week, was the 16 seed, and Chugg the 14 seed after stroke play qualifying. Chugg, 32 and a five-time Utah Women's State Amateur champion, was in the final match of the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur for the third time, and Dinh for the first time in three appearances at the championship. Dinh had reached the round of 16 and the quarterfinals in her first two trips to the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur.    A former University of Wisconsin golfer, the 2021 Michigan Women's Amateur champion and a two-time GAM Women's Mid-Amateur champion, Dinh said she has learned from her previous golf experiences how to handle being behind.   “I have learned something every time I've gotten to match play, just every time I've played it, I've gotten more comfortable with it,” she said. “I've learned that even if you get down to not panic. I've been in pressure situations and have gotten used to it. I used to struggle with it, but this year I've played with the attitude that I need to enjoy every moment. Like I said, keep hitting the ball and see where it takes me.”    Dinh's emotions bubbled to the surface when she was asked about her family and friends in the gallery, including an aunt who had departed for Indianapolis only to turn around and return as her niece advanced through to the final match.    “I really enjoy them being out following me,” she said. “They have been supportive of me through my entire golf journey.”     For the victory Dinh received the traditional USGA gold medal, custody of the Mildred Gardineer Prunaret Trophy for the next year, exemptions into the next 10 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championships, exemptions into the 2024 and 2025 U.S. Women's Amateur Championships and an exemption into the 2024 U.S. Women's Open Championship. Dinh said Wednesday that the U.S. Women's Open was a bucket list item she hoped to cross off one day.    “I'm super excited but I don't think all of this will sink in until I'm home,” she said.     As for heading home, she said work beckons because she takes vacation days for her golf competitions.    “I have a presentation I have to give tomorrow so I have to at least dial in for that, and then we'll figure out what the rest of the day looks like,” she said and laughed.    Dinh is the first GAM member golfer to win the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur, the third GAM member to win a national USGA title in the last three years and the sixth to win a USGA national championship in the last 21 years.     Kim Moore of Portage won the inaugural U.S. Adaptive Open last summer, and James Piot of Canton became Michigan's first U.S. Amateur Champion in 2021. In 2002 Greg Reynolds of Grand Blanc won the U.S. Senior Amateur, Randy Lewis of Alma won the 2012 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship and Tom Werkmeister of Hudsonville was co-medalist as Team Michigan won the USGA State Team Championship in 2016.    Learn more at 2023 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Golf Championship (usga.org)  Story by Greg Johnson and Mary Jo Green

This is not a course we get to see on the coverage of golf regularly, super exclusive would be an understatement. It is the first time the course has hosted a major event (excluding the 2017 Walker Cup) So it is fair to say that the golf architecture fans will all have a keen eye on the course. In its April issue, Club + Resort Business released its annual rankings of the top fitness and wellness centers. The fitness and wellness facility at Addison Reserve Country Club in Delray Beach, Fla. earned the No. 1 ranking in C+RB's recognition program. In this episode of Club + Resort Talks, C+RB Senior Editor Phil Keren spoke with Anthony Biondolillo, the club's Assistant General Manager, and Grant Worthington, the facility's Director Sports Operations, to learn more about Addison Reserve Country Club. Biondolillo and Worthington expressed their appreciation for receiving this honor, discussed what their fitness and wellness center offers that makes it stand out from similar facilities, and shared information about upcoming improvements at the club. In addition to an informative conversation with Biondolillo and Worthington, Phil also spoke with Club + Resort Business Editor Rob Thomas about some of the latest news stories happening in the industry. Phil and Rob discussed two stories showcasing golf courses' increasing efforts to be more environmentally conscious: Greenway Golf Associates this past week announced they entered a partnership with with master architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr., and his golf course design company, Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects (RTJII), to renovate the North Course at Corica Park in Alameda, Calif. Greenway selected Robert Jones Golf Course Architects because of the company's world-renowned expertise and environmental leadership in golf course design. Leisure World Golf Course in Silver Spring, Md. this week achieved Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses (ACSP for Golf) certification. Christine Kane, CEO at Audubon International, says that to earn this certification, golf courses must “demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas.” Leisure World's accomplishments included: expanding native vegetation; removing invasive plant species; providing quality wildlife habitat; and conducting water quality testing. Frank McLaughlin, Golf Superintendent, and Alan Nelson, Golf and Greens Committee Certification Project Manager, led the effort. Meanwhile, a course in California is still working to recover from a major weather event last month. In March, there were a couple of heavy storms that wiped out six holes at River Island Country Club in Porterville, Calif. Holes 10, 16, 17 and 18 are severely damaged and 11 and 12 are beyond repair and need to be completely rebuilt. Terry Treece, the club's General Manager, said he is going to be meeting with an architect and a construction company on the course. He says he thinks the total damages will cost a few million dollars, but he hopes his estimate is on the high side. Read more at www.clubandresortbusiness.com.

Hello again Fellow Golfists,I had a great day out at the first event of the 22 - 23 PGA Tour season at the 2022 Fortinet Championship at Silverado Resort and Spa.  I had a great time meeting and chatting with fellow golfists that had really cool stories to share about what golf means to them.  I especially enjoyed sitting next to a lovely couple, who shared their pork jerky with me and who also happened to be from Gilroy California.  They were the parents of Kyle Harrigan who is the Golf Course Superintendent at the North Course at the Silverado Resort and Spa.  They were fun to sit with and chat with about all of the afternoon groups that were coming through the 11th tee.  I then also got to sit next to a lovely couple who were from San Mateo and who also got to witness a hole in one on the 11th hole at the North Course at Silverado.    I look forward to sharing my tidbits and little interviews that I collected today in the near future on The Knackered Golfist Podcast.  Thanks for Listening to The Knackered Golfist Podcast!! Oh, by the way, The Knackered Golfist Podcast is now available on ListenApp.

Stock Market Nears Key Resistance Point, US Economy Contracts, Strategies for Inherited IRAs

In this episode of the Planned Solutions Incorporated Podcast, The US stock market has rebounded from its mid-June lows rallying 13% and cutting the losses for the year in half. However, the market is now nearing a key resistance line defined by the mid-March lows and the late-May/early-June highs. Should the market fail to push through this resistance level the lows from mid-June could be revisited. On the other hand, should the market push through this level the next point of resistance is 10% higher than the current price. Also, The US economy has likely contracted for two consecutive quarters based on the first estimate for the second quarter of 2022 economic output. However, household spending has remained positive for the first two quarters showing that the consumer remains strong. Meanwhile, government spending has declined as the stimulus spending from early 2021 is compared to current spending levels. And, Investors typically want to avoid taking distributions from their investment accounts when the markets are down. However, those who own an inherited IRA and are subject to the 10-year distribution rules may benefit from accelerating distributions when investment values are down and then reinvest the money in an after-tax investment account where a recovery in value may be subject to lower tax rates. This will also help free the account owner from the 10-year rule that is related to inherited IRAs. Plus a look at the Planned Solutions Incorporated Office Bulletin Board- The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 recently passed the Senate and is expected to soon pass the House of Representatives and be signed by the President. While this bill is scaled way back from the original Build Back Better bill it still contains numerous provisions that will take time for us to dig into. The bill includes new taxes, mostly on businesses, that are expected to generate $739 billion in increased tax revenue as well as spending of $433 billion, some of which includes individual tax credits such as those for purchasing electric vehicles. The bill also includes increased funding for the IRS in an attempt to increase tax collections. Unfortunately, it looks like most of this money will go to tax enforcement (increased audits) rather than IRS customer service which has made it nearly impossible for taxpayers to resolve tax issues. Therefore, taxpayers may face an increase in audits and tax notices with no additional resources to help them get these issues resolved. Save the date for the Harlan D. This may be a sign that growth stocks are more likely to lead market returns should the stock market recovery continue. And, Stock lending is now being offered to non-institutional investors as an enticement to use certain brokerage firms. Some investors are attracted to the idea of lending their stock holdings to other investors in order to earn a small amount of income on the loan. However, there are important risks as well as tax implications that investors need to consider before engaging in these more advanced investment strategies. In this episode of the Planned Solutions Incorporated Podcast, The stock market is currently testing a key level that could impact the performance of the market over the first six months of 2022. After declining in January, and then falling further in March, the stock market is now testing its lows from March. Should the market rebound in May it may create a double bottom which could be a positive sign going forward. However, if the market declines further, dipping below the March / April lows, it could mean that another leg down will come before the market finds a bottom. Also, Series I US Government Savings Bonds are currently offering attractive interest rates. The rates on these bonds are based on the rate of inflation which is currently quite high compared to other interest rates. However, investors should understand the rules surrounding these bonds including the limits on the amount that can be purchased, required holding periods, and the income tax implications. And, In an effort to uncover untaxed income the IRS is now requiring more and more companies to issue Form 1099-K to report transactions. This means that more credit card and third-party networks will be reporting income to taxpayers. In some cases, this may be taxable income that should have been reported anyway but in others, it may be payments for personal expenses, such as a friend reimbursing an individual for tickets to a concert or sporting event. Therefore, taxpayers may need to be more cautious when using these payment platforms. Plus a look at the Planned Solutions Incorporated Office Bulletin Board- Save the date for the Harlan D.
