Mid-Atlantic - conversations about US, UK and world politics
In this episode of "Mid Atlantic," host Roifield Brown, from Birmingham, engages in a riveting discussion on the latest political developments on both sides of the Atlantic, focusing on Bernie Moreno's recent victory in the Ohio GOP Senate primary and the unfolding challenges facing UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. With the insights of political analyst Aram Fischer, pollster Logan Phillips, and UK-based political consultants Leah Brown and Cory Bernard, the episode delves into the implications of Moreno's win, endorsed by Donald Trump, for the Ohio Republican Party and the broader American political landscape. The discussion also turns to the troubled waters Prime Minister Sunak navigates amidst internal dissent within the Conservative Party and looming local elections. The conversation covers a range of topics, including the Trump endorsement's impact, the dynamics of the Senate races, and the future of UK politics under Sunak's leadership.Quotes:Aram Fischer: "Ohio has been drifting to the right for a bunch of years now... the blue cities have stayed very blue, but the red areas of Ohio have gotten increasingly red."Logan Phillips: "Democrats could overperform in the right places here to have a shot at winning. They're underdogs, but they consistently have an edge in candidate recruitment."Leah Brown: "Rishi Sunak could have had a fundamentally different premiership. It's a masterclass in what does it look like to bring people along with you and to fail at that."Cory Bernard: "The Tory party...didn't have to be in this dire situation. Rishi Sunak had a clear two years and some change to set a vision... He's completely dropped the ball." Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Elected officials swatted - Calls to override the veto on H.B. 68 go out News in Focus launches the new year 2024. State Senator Andy Brenner shares his experience of being swatted last week along with State Attorney General Dave Yost and two other elected officials in an apparent attack from the political left. The swatting occurred on the anniversary date of the signing of legislation that stiffens the penalties in the State of Ohio for those who falsely call law enforcement to weaponize the SWAT teams. Governor DeWine shocked members of his own party when he vetoed the common sense legislation of H.B. 68 the Ohio SAFE Act, legislation that protects women's sports for girls and women in the State of Ohio. It also bans the transgender indoctrination that is going on in public schools and in certain health clinics in Ohio and that is being pushed by children's hospitals. It bans hormone blocking drugs and gender mutilating surgeries on minors. Governor DeWine's veto angered conservatives throughout the state. A cascade of statements was launched by all statewide officeholders, the Chairman of the Ohio Republican Party, a number of Ohio House and Senate members, and even President Trump who weighed in and said the following, "DeWine has fallen to the Radical Left. No wonder he gets loudly booed in Ohio every time I introduce him at Rallies, but I won't be introducing him any more, I'm finished with this "stiff." What was he thinking. The bill would have stopped child mutilation, and prevented men from playing in women's sports. Legislature will hopefully overturn. Do it FAST!!!" The push is on for the legislature to overturn the Governor's veto of H.B. 68 as soon as possible. Click here to contact your State Representative.

A new entry in the Like a Dragon series, Infinite Wealth, the Apollo Justice Ace Attorney trilogy, Rushing Beat X, and The Legends of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 3 and 4 all come out early next year. For the people not willing to wait till next year, Blossom Tails 2 and Triggerheart Exelica will both release before the end of the Empty Wallet Season. Every Friday is Grinder Season. The season wouldn't be as magical if we didn't address our Stinkoes and celebrate our Sweetoes. It just wouldn't be a normal season unless Break was angry about the Ohio Republican Party. It would be a first if the police managed to not piss off Frank and to not be a Stinko. We all know they are and we know they will make a "guest" appearance next Grinder Season. It isn't not all bad news for the Police as they finally get to celebrate a Sweeto... sorta. This Grinder Season wouldn't be complete without the final results of the of latest and greatest tournament known to humankind! This Season the Grinders finally decide who will be the Greatest Mascot of All Time. Sixty-four of the great ones entered. Now eight remain. Only one can be champion. Will Ronald McDonald and his Happy Meal Gang be able to fend off the one Chef wrecking crew known as Boyardee? Will the Scrubbin Bubbles clean up the mess the Kool-Aid man left? Will the too cool for school Spuds McKenzie enjoy a free trip to Geoffrey's castle or will the Giraffe send Spuds home crying to his house full of Dallas Cheerleaders? Will two attractive twins be able to win against a Man who is so Interesting that even his beard has its own fan club? Another Grinder Season has come and gone. Don't worry because Grinder Season will be back next Friday LIVE and hopefully not as buggy! Grinder Season will be here through all of the other less awesome seasons! The people have Ohio have sided with Democracy by rejecting Issue 1 in a state referendum. The Ohio Republican Party backed Issue 1 would raise the vote for referendums from a simple majority vote of 51-49% up to 60-40% approval. This issue was put to vote in an attempt to stop abortion from being codified into Ohio law through an upcoming ballot initiative. We're venturing into a discussion about renowned Professor Lee Strang, a symbolic figure of Christian Nationalism in Northwest Ohio. From his significant role in academia as a law professor at the University of Toledo to his controversial advocacy for so-called Intellectual Diversity centers at Ohio law schools, Strang's influence is widespread and thought-provoking. His recent participation in State Issue One showcases his role at the core of significant legal and societal debates. Our discussion doesn't shy away from the controversial aspects of Strang's work. We dissect his interpretation of the First Amendment, where he argues it excludes atheism and secular humanism from the definition of religion, and discuss his belief that an unborn fetus should be constitutionally protected. We also touch on his founding of the Northwest Ohio Classical Academy, a religious school disguised as a public charter school with a distinct approach to education, and how his views on constitutional originalism shape his approach to these institutions. Finally, we delve into the complexities of Strang's Christian nationalist influence and discuss the appearence of a quid pro quo with the leaders of the Ohio Republican Party and Ohio anti-abortion groups. By examining Strang's founding of the Northwest Ohio Classical Academy and his attempts to pass State Issue 1 with State Senator and former student Rob McColley, we provide an intriguing look into the dynamics of Trumpian politics. Whether you agree with his views or not, Strang's influence in Ohio and beyond cannot be ignored. Tune in for a fascinating exploration of one man's impact on law, education, and society in the state of Ohio. Editor's note: Professor Strang was invited to be a guest on the show to talk about these topics. Today's episode takes us to Northwest Ohio as we probe into the intriguing life and ideologies of Professor Lee Strang. Engulfed in legal and societal debates, Strang plays multiple roles - a University of Toledo Law School professor, public charter school founder, anti-abortion activist, and advocate for conservative think tanks at Ohio law schools. We navigate the highs and lows of his highly charged Christian nationalist perspective, addressing his influence on law, education, and society. We peer into Strang's interpretation of the First Amendment and discuss why atheism and secular humanism do not fit into his definition of religion. We unveil his stance on the constitutional protection of unborn fetuses and how this belief fuels his anti-abortion activism. Unmasking the educational philosophy behind the Northwest Ohio Classical Academy, Strang's brainchild, we bring to light its approach to controversial topics and commitment to a classical education curriculum that tries to hide its religious underpinnings. Finally, we bare the threads of Strang's Christian Nationalist influence and the appearance of a quid pro quo with the leaders of the Ohio Republican Party and state anti-abortion groups like the Center for Christian Virtue. We scrutinize his endeavors to pass State Issue 1 alongside State Senator and former student Rob McColley and the implications for Ohio's political landscape. Regardless of personal agreement or dissent with Strang's beliefs, his impact on Ohio and beyond is undeniable. We also proudly host NANCY MACLEAN of Duke University, whose landmark DEMOCRACY IN CHAINS digs deep into the destruction of our essential government structured by a greedy Uber-rich class of fascists and autocrats who threaten us all. Nancy is interviewed by the great Tatanka Bricca, whose detailed knowledge of what plagues our electoral system sets a critical framework from a truly unique discussion. Central Ohio's STEVE CARUSO also reports on the insane attempts of the Ohio Republican Party to sabotage efforts to draw fair representational districts in the Buckeye State. Those assaults have been shockingly resisted by Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor of the Ohio Supreme Court in one of the great sagas of actual courage in American politics. Unless we find more of it, this nation is doomed.
Mark Bainbridge is a CPA, business advisor, and member of the Central Committee of the Republican Party of Ohio.
