In this episode of the ChinaPower Podcast, Arne Westad joins us to discuss his new book, The Coming Storm: Power, Conflict, and Warnings from History. He explains why the years leading up to World War I, rather than the Cold War, offer a striking parallel from history for today's U.S.–China relationship and great power competition. He highlights how mistrust, multipolarity, and unclear strategic aims can fuel miscalculation. The conversation examines how flashpoints such as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, and India–China tensions could escalate under these conditions, why rapid technological change and weak crisis communication heighten risks, and the steps major powers can take to reduce these dangers. Arne Westad is an Elihu Professor of History at Yale University. Before joining Yale, he taught at the London School of Economics, where he was School Professor of International History, and at Harvard University, where he was the S.T. Lee Professor of US-Asia Relations.

Recently, the Associate Dean Pacific at Auckland's Law School, Professor Guy Fiti Sinclair, hosted a workshop foregrounding Pacific-centred understandings of how the Pacific is contending with international law and governance amidst these tensions. Srividya Jandhyala, professor of management at ESSEC Business School and author of The Great Disruption, offers a clear framework for how geopolitics is reshaping corporate strategy. Her central thesis is direct: “The fundamental idea, ‘Where are you from?'—the nationality of the company—is the defining feature of the type of reactions you face from all stakeholders, not just governments, but also customers, suppliers, and clients”.   She explains why geopolitics now sits inside business decisions rather than adjacent to them. Corporate choices create externalities that trigger responses from states and nonmarket actors. For example, decisions around semiconductors illustrate how commercial moves collide with concerns about national security and dependence in key markets. The implication is that access, permissions, and standards increasingly compete with price and product as decisive variables.   Jandhyala distills four structural foundations every multinational should monitor: Market access — Where tariffs, export controls, or rivalries may close doors. Level playing field — Corporate nationality can tilt advantage or disadvantage against competitors. Investment security — Whether assets, workforce, and property rights will be safe and returns can be repatriated. Institutional alignment — The “USB vs. power plug” analogy: some systems work seamlessly, while others clash. Geopolitics is increasingly a contest of standards   Practical Takeaways Build a repeatable discipline. Go beyond headline news by scanning developments, personalizing them to the firm's footprint, planning responses, and pivoting as conditions change. Map exposure by corporate nationality. Quantify where origin shapes market permissions, customer sentiment, or partner constraints. Treat corporate diplomacy as a core capability. Relationship-building with governments and stakeholders now consumes significant CEO time, creating both opportunities and trade-offs. For CEOs: View geopolitical flux as a field for advantage, not just risk. “Be imaginative about how you can exploit your corporate nationality, your position in the value chain, and your global market presence.” For middle managers: Expect new roles and metrics; government engagement, redundancy planning, and cross-functional information brokering are becoming central. Use the right cognitive frame. Executives must decide explicitly whether and where geopolitics deserves share of mind, recognizing that equally astute observers may reach different conclusions. Jandhyala's counsel is rigorous but pragmatic: geopolitics is now part of the operating environment. Companies that treat it as noise will miss risks and opportunities. Those that build structural awareness and corporate diplomacy into strategy will be better positioned to compete when “permissions, politics, and standards” define the terms of play.

Given Jew-hatred and virulent anti-Israel rhetoric spiraling out of control, particularly on college campuses, we've invited Shai Davidai to be our featured guest on this episode of the program. Shai is Assistant Professor in the Management Division of Columbia University Business School. His research examines people's everyday judgments of themselves, other people, and society as a whole. Born and raised just outside Tel-Aviv, Shai received his Ph.D. from Cornell in 2015. Before joining Columbia Business School, Shai spent a year as a post-doctoral fellow at Princeton and 3 years as an Assistant Professor of Psychology at The New School for Social Research. Following the barbaric October 7th 2023 terrorist attack on Israel, Shai has faced deplorable treatment from Columbia University for standing up for Israel and the rights of Jewish students on campus. Today, he's a leading face and voice in the fight against Jew-hatred and Israel-bashing. Our conversation begins with Shai sharing his one way ticket to the safety of his late Grandmother's couch in Givatayim, just outside of Tel Aviv. While on weekend breaks from his university studies in Jerusalem, Shai would visit his Savta (Grandmother) Lydia. Together they would talk, smoke, drink Turkish coffee and enjoy her signature Romanian cheesecake. And at some point, Shai would fall asleep on her couch. Shai shares that Savta Lydia, who was from Bucharest, was studying to be a doctor. Aged 19 and after her first year of university, despite good grades, she was called into the Dean's office and told she wouldn't be able to continue her studies because the university met its quota of Jews. That, plus her being a woman, didn't fit the university's agenda. Realizing she had no future as a Jew in Romania, she packed up and traveled solo to Israel to chart a new course. Her biggest regret in life, Shai offers, is that she didn't become a doctor. We continue our chat with Shai highlighting: 1) How the first protests at Columbia supporting the October 7th attack (organizing began the evening of October 7th while terrorists were still in Israel!) took place at the university on October 12th before one IDF soldier set foot in Gaza and four days after Hezbollah's unprovoked attack on Israel's north. On the 12th, approximately 800 students, faculty and staff came out to celebrate “the historic day” (their words). They used slogans like “resistance by any means necessary” (which for them meant rape, murder and kidnapping civilians was “necessary”). For me, not sure what the need was for resistance since Israel had left Gaza 18 years before and thousands of Gazans would cross into Israel daily to work.  2) The Kafkaesque treatment he's received from Columbia University, simply for speaking out, not against the protestors or their hatred, but against Columbia's administration for allowing the hatred to fester and take root. For exercising his first amendment rights, he's been banned from Columbia's campus. This includes the Columbia Hillel. 3) His goal in speaking out is to push the message that we have a problem for support of anti-Jewish, anti-Israel and anti-American terrorism in academia. 4) How US professors openly support US designated terrorist groups, e.g., Hamas and the Houthis, but only ones that target Jews (you won't see support for Boko Haram). How the same professors and others remained and remain silent on, for example, the October 7th attack and the burning of synagogues worldwide. 5) Jewish students being verbally and physically attacked on campuses and denied entry into their public campus spaces. 6) The silent, slanted and biased behavior of international aid organizations like the Red Cross (which to this day has not visited one single hostage), UNRWA, or Amnesty International which engages in historical revisionism. 7) How the anti-Israel and Jew-hating protests are in fact anti-democratic and also anti-American. 8) What starts with the Jews doesn't end with the Jews. This is a powerful episode to be heard more than once and shared widely. For more from Shai, tune into his podcast: Here I Am With Shai Davidai.  Also, follow Shai on all social media: @shaidavidai

In a world where our minds are constantly crafting stories—about who we are, where we've been, and where we're headed—understanding the narrative becomes a journey of self-discovery. In this episode, Madelaine Weiss, a Harvard-trained expert in human behavior, unpacks the delicate dance between the ego, mindfulness, and the stories we carry. Through rich conversations and thought-provoking insights, we explore the human tendency to fill in the blanks, the evolutionary purpose of emotions, and the power of choice that lies between stimulus and response. As the conversation unfolds, we navigate the balance between letting go of what holds us back and embracing the tools that allow us to take control of our lives. This is a story of awareness, courage, and the profound realization that we are both the author and the observer of our existence. Takeaways Epistemic hunger drives the desire for knowledge. The ego can hinder the learning process. Mindfulness practices have significant health benefits. Spiritual paths can lead to similar destinations. Observation is key to understanding consciousness. Personal growth requires flexibility and new tools. Children's purity and presence are often lost in adulthood. The mind often creates narratives that can be limiting. Different experiences shape individual spiritual journeys. Seeking answers is a dance, not a forced process. Adaptive strategies can become overwhelming if not managed. We have more control over our emotions than we realize. Anxiety can serve as a useful signal for decision-making. Emotions are essential for making informed choices. Self-trust is crucial for resilience and personal growth. Life experiences shape our understanding of ourselves. We can revise our personal narratives to empower ourselves. Understanding our feelings can lead to greater self-awareness. The human experience is about navigating emotions and challenges. Finding meaning in adversity can lead to profound insights. Quotes "The mind makes up stories for us to live in. The more we know that, the better those stories can be, because then we're in charge of it instead of it being in charge of us." – Madelaine Weiss "Between stimulus and response, there is a space. And in that space is our power to choose. In our choice lies our freedom and growth." – Viktor Frankl, referenced by Madelaine Weiss "You cannot be that which you observe, for then who would be doing the observing?" – Madelaine Weiss GUEST's Info Madeline's Website Instagram @madelaine_weiss LinkedIn My Information Instagram Review Me on Apple Share a Link to My Podcast Thank you so much for listening, and I hope this time you invested with me provided you with fruitful returns. Costas Markides, professor of strategy at the London Business School, is one of the world's foremost experts on strategy and innovation. He examines how companies can create a culture of continuous innovation and the role that individual managers play in making a company more innovative. Costas is the author of four books on strategy and innovation, he was listed by Forbes.com as one of the world's most influential management gurus, and has served as a Fellow of the World Economic Forum in Davos. Costas received his BA and MA in Economics from Boston University, and his MBA and DBA from Harvard Business School.  In this episode we discuss the following: What often seems like an obvious answer to a problem is usually not the right answer. In the ‘60s and ‘70s, 1000s of companies diversified, only to refocus decades later. An obvious explanation for this was that the companies had made a mistake. But an alternative explanation was that the companies were right to diversify when they did and then right to refocus when they did because the market had changed. Just because a company communicates a particular strategy in public, does not mean that they aren't communicating a different, or more refined, inspiring, strategy privately. To get at the heart of the onion, as Costas said, we need ask at least five Why's. Managers know they should differentiate themselves. Yet data suggests that 92% of managers imitate rather than differentiate. To close the knowing/doing gap, Costas suggests we start small, develop a strategy, work hard, and try to turn behaviors into habits.   Connect on Social Media: X: https://twitter.com/nate_meikle LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/natemeikle/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nate_meikle/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@nate.meikle

Mauro F. Guillén is one of the most original thinkers at the Wharton School, where he is Professor of Management and Vice Dean for the MBA for Executives Program. An expert on global market trends, he is a sought-after speaker and consultant. His online classes on Coursera and other platforms have attracted over 100,000 participants from around the world. He has won multiple teaching awards at Wharton, where his presentation on global market trends has become a permanent feature of over fifty executive education programs annually. The speed at which Artificial Intelligence is advancing is "mind-boggling," says the Indian-born Prof. Sawhney, who teaches AI business applications at Northwestern University in the US. Citing the need for guardrails and ethical guidelines to manage its dangers and harness its potential, he compares the advent of AI to splitting the atom, with its enormous benefits coupled with the risk of “blowing ourselves up spectacularly.”  He explains to Howie how he sees AI affecting journalism, the call center industry, and Filipino nurses in online support roles. As a teacher, he expects students to “cheat” using AI, so he has adapted his methodology to incorporate AI inputs into his exams. He also shares lessons from the pandemic – “a period of tremendous forced innovation.” “We learned so many things during the pandemic. Let us not forget those. Let's retain the best of digital and the best of physical, and bring it together to create true omni-channel experiences, whether it's learning experiences, or shopping experiences, or working experiences.” Prof. Mohan is coming to the Philippines to give a lecture on Artificial Intelligence on July 17, 2023.
