Overseas Filipino Workers or OFWs have long been dubbed as the Philippines' modern-day heroes. They leave family and friends, their comfort zones, their culture and homes behing to try their luck in foreign and far-flung countries, hoping to earn a better living than from the few opportunities offered back home.In July 2022, Jullebee Cabilis Ranara, a native of Las Piñas decided to try her luck again in Kuwait after a successful stint in Bahrain some years before. In the early days of her stay with her Kuwaiti employer, there had already been signs that Jullebee may not have been entirely safe. Six months later, she would be found dead in a desert and the way she was found sent shockwaves through Kuwait and the Philippines alike. But here is the thing...Jullebee was not the first and only one who was murdered in Kuwait. She was, in a way, the culmination of a series of deaths that would ultimately make Filipinos question their own government and whether it really was capable of keeping OFWs safe abroad.Jullebee's story is also the story of Joanna Demafelis, Constancia Lago Dayag and Jeanelyn Villavende. In this episode, I speak with Rebecca Kersch, Founder and CEO of TANGapp, a remittance and payments company that helps overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the US send money to the Philippines. Rebecca grew up in the US and the Netherlands, spent many summers visiting her family in the Philippines, and has studied and lived all over the world. Rebecca started her career in management consulting - the same one as me actually, and we crossed paths again when we were both doing our Masters at Harvard. Rebecca started TANGapp in 2020 to help OFWs send money back to their loved ones in the Philippines and has grown into the payments space since. TANGapp is currently raising a seed round, and I'm happy to share that my women-focused angel investing syndicate, Findicate, is one of the participants. You can learn more about TANGapp by visting tangapp.org, and you can learn more about Findicate by shooting an email to findicateangels@gmail.com. p.s. Barok and Takya: Living the Tradition of Simbang Gabi

From the moment we are born, traditions shape and define our lives. Every culture has unique rituals, celebrations, and beliefs that bring people together and create a sense of belonging and community. One such tradition is the Simbang Gabi—a popular Filipino Christmas tradition—which Barok and Takya explore in their Filipino Bisaya podcast episode. Barok and Takya explore what makes this traditional celebration so unique and how it brings joy to Filipinos all over the world.   What is Simbang Gabi? Simbang Gabi is a nine-day religious event in December leading up to Christmas day in the Philippines. Each morning from December 16th through December 24th, Filipino Catholics attend dawn masses (known as simbang gabi or Misa de Gallo) held at their local churches or chapels. The mass is usually followed by a Feast Day, where people gather for food, drinks, and Christmas carols. It's truly a joyful occasion!   Why is Simbang Gabi important? Simbang Gabi has been celebrated since the 16th century when Spanish friars introduced it to Filipinos—and it's still practiced today by millions of Filipinos around the world. It is an essential part of Filipino culture because it symbolizes hope and faith during difficult times. The nine days of Simbang Gabi remind Filipinos that they are never alone; they have family members who will be there for them no matter what life throws their way.   How do you live out this tradition? For Pinoy podcasters, Barok and Takya, living out this tradition mean attending their local Simbang Gabi ceremonies each year with family members and friends, praying together for peace and harmony throughout the world. They also talk about how they start each ceremony with a traditional song called "Ang Pasko Ay Kay Saya", followed by carols like "Christmas in Our Hearts", which fill them with warmth and happiness during this cold breeze of December.    Conclusion: Traditions can be your anchor when times get tough, no matter where you come from or how far you've traveled from home. For many Overseas Filipino Workers living abroad, celebrating Simbang Gabi is one way to stay connected to their roots while bringing joy into their lives during this particular time of year. So why not take some time out of your day to listen to the Barok and Takya Bisaya Podcast about this beautiful celebration? You might find yourself inspired by its timeless message of hope and faith!   We're so grateful you've taken the time to listen to our Filipino Pinoy podcast in the Bisaya language. We hope you'll continue to follow us as we explore more interesting topics. Barok and Takya Bisaya Podcast is a labor of love, and it's only possible because of listeners like you. Can we transform our society through unruly resistance, defiant love, and radical care? Two highly respected and widely-published scholars, Diane C. Fujino and Robyn Magalit Rodriguez, think it's possible. In their new book, Contemporary Asian American Activism: Building Movements for Liberation, they brought together stories of lived experiences, lessons, and triumphs from grassroots Asian American organizers and scholar-activists fighting for transformative justice. In the struggles for prison abolition, global anti-imperialism, immigrant rights, affordable housing, environmental justice, fair labor, and more, twenty-first-century Asian American activists are speaking out and standing up to systems of oppression. Fujino and Rodriguez came together to celebrate victories, assess failures, reflect on the trials of activist life, examine movement-building in the long term, and inspire continued mobilization for the years to come. Collectively, the stories shape a vision of a more just future that's forged when many different races — and multiple generations — come together in solidarity. Diane C. Fujino is professor of Asian American Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research examines Japanese and Asian American activist history within an Asian American Radical Tradition and shaped by Black Power and Third World decolonization. Fujino is co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Asian American Studies, and sits on the editorial boards of Kalfou: A Journal of Comparative and Relational Ethnic Studies and the Journal of Civil and Human Rights. She serves as Faculty Equity Advisory and Associate Dean in the Division of Social Sciences. She is featured in AOKI: A Documentary Film and has spoken on the history of Asian American, Afro-Asian, and Third World liberation struggles on NPR, Democracy Now!, CBSN, NBC Asian America, and many other networks. She is the author of multiple books, and her writing has been published in the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and on Al Jazeera Plus, Discover Nikkei, and many more. Robyn Magalit Rodriguez is professor of Asian American Studies at the University of California, Davis. She was the first Pinay (Filipina born in the United States) to serve as chair in the Asian American Studies department's 50-year history. She is also the founding director of the Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies and is a widely published and award-winning scholar. She has written on global migration with a particular focus on Overseas Filipino Workers. She has also written on Asian American (including Filipino American) issues, highlighting Asian American activism in recent years. She was awarded the Excellence in Mentoring Award by the Association for Asian American Studies in 2021. In our next episode of Saturday School, where this season we're exploring Asian American interracial cinema, we look at the 2011 documentary "The Learning" by Ramona Diaz. It's about four women from the Philippines as they're recruited to be teachers in the American public school system around 2006. It follows them over the course of their first year teaching at a predominantly Black school in Baltimore. Over a century ago, the U.S. colonized the Philippines and established an English-speaking public school system there, inadvertently creating a workforce of Overseas Filipino Workers that could be exploited decades later. The Filipina teachers come because they are able to earn over 20 times as much teaching in the U.S., and they can send money home, which also supports the economy of the Philippines. We're reminded of a popular trope in Hollywood, where an outsider white teacher comes to teach at a low-income school and ends up uplifting Black and brown students, and then Michelle Pfeiffer ends up in a Coolio video in a shiny black leather jacket. But in "The Learning," the power dynamics are more complicated. These women teachers come to a new country and are often separated from their husbands and young children for a whole school year for these jobs. Here, there are no white saviors, just the failures of colonialism on both sides of the ocean that bring Black and immigrant Filipino communities together to figure out how to save themselves and each other.

Imelda was born and raised in Jolo Sulu Mindanao. Her family was against her studying outside that town and in Manila for fear of danger. Yet Imelda persisted though she appreciated their concern. Her journey began from where she flew to Yemen and became a flight attendant. She didn't even know where Yemen at that time. Nevertheless she stayed and enjoyed her work as there were free flights to different countries. Her amazing trail is something to watch. One powerful woman who today aims to share with many Overseas Filipino Workers her experiences and learnings. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/armando-bartolome5/support

Every week, UCA News Podcath invites experts to discuss issues relevant to Asian communities. This week the discussion is about Overseas Filipino Workers.More than ten million Filipinos live and work overseas. They work in the world's high-paying cities, particularly in the Persian Gulf, Hong Kong, Canada, and Europe. The Covid-19 pandemic has made their lives miserable. A relatively overlooked group of Filipino overseas workers are thousands toiling onboard international crew ships. Most such ships were anchored abruptly in unfamiliar waters because of the pandemic, throwing their lives out of gear. The trauma, caused by the uncertainty of life,  hits them as much as it hits their families back home.Joseph Peter Calleja, Manila Correspondent of UCA News spoke to Christopher Lao, a lawyer who specializes in immigration law, and a teacher at the University of the Philippines College of Law.Produced by Binu AlexFor news in and about the Church in Asia, visit www.ucanews.com

This week's episode of Saturday School continues our semester of tear-jerking romances... just kidding, our semester on Asian films about Asian Americans, and we've progressed semi-chronologically to the 1990s in the Philippines with Lea Salonga. 1995's "Sana Maulit Muli" stars Lea Salonga and Aga Muhlach as a young couple who hope to start the next stage of their lives in America in pursuit of a better economic future. But she gets a visa first and is tearfully convinced by her boyfriend to go without him. He'll join her soon, he promises. And never forget how much he loves her, he says. Does she forget? Or is it that even if she's certain of his love, love is not enough if they're stuck on separate continents, pre-Skype? And when the complications of immigration causes a relationship to reach its breaking point, can they ever go back to the way it used to be? In some ways, it's a universal tale about a long distance relationship and what happens when power dynamics in a relationship shift. But this is also a very specific story about Overseas Filipino Workers, the pressures to succeed in America to provide for your family, the struggles to get and retain a visa, and what happens when sacrifices you make for your partner become too soul-crushing, but "yesterday, tomorrow and today, you'll be the only one I love." This 90s classic was digitally restored and re-mastered in 2015 for its 20th anniversary, so it looks beautiful and, unlike some of the more obscure films we talk about, this one is easily accessible on iTunes or Amazon Prime. So take advantage!
