In this episode, Andres Azpurua, Executive Director of a Venezuelan digital human rights NGO, joins us to discuss ongoing government internet censorship in Venezuela, especially during and after the recent controversial presidential election. Andres explains the technical methods used to document and counteract censorship, such as DNS tampering and state-sponsored phishing, highlighting how these actions are intertwined with political repression. Ultimately, the organization aims to hold the government accountable and increase the political cost of censorship by documenting evidence and advocating for internet freedom as a human right.

Russia's federal censor has been throttling YouTube playback speeds for the last month or so, just like it slowed Twitter data transfer speeds back in 2021. Throughout August, Russian Internet users have reported sudden and widespread outages in access to popular apps and services like Telegram, WhatsApp, Skype, Wikipedia, Steam, Discord, and more. While the RuNet crackdown has become a familiar feature of the Putin regime, its technical side is hard to understand. For help with the science of Russian Internet censorship and surveillance, Meduza spoke to Sarkis Darbinyan, a senior legal counsel to the digital rights group RKS Global (which recently published a report titled “State of Surveillance: A Study on How the Russian State, Through Laws and Technology, Carries Out Digital Surveillance”) and Philipp Dietrich, a project officer for the “Risks of the Sovereign Internet for Russia and Beyond” project at the German Council on Foreign Relations's Center for Order and Governance in Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia. This week, Frank and Alex discuss Ed Sheeran's ongoing copyright lawsuit and the examples that have come before him, the end of Title 42 and what that means for immigration into the US, and the increase of censorship by the government on the internet.

The Liberal government struck down debate in the House of Commons on the internet censorship law, Bill C-11, to ram the legislation through parliament. The bill was passed in the House of Commons on Thursday evening and will now head back to the Senate for debate. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested in facial recognition, surveillance tools and internet technology to monitor the Iranian population, block or slow down the internet, suppress dissent and cover up the regime's widespread violent suppression of recent protests. Amir Rashidi spoke with Malihe Razazan about this subject. Amir Rashidi is an internet security and digital rights researcher. He has over 10 years of experience in digital security and rights in Iran. Rashidi is an expert on Iranian Internet censorship, cyber-attacks, and security trends. He has conducted tens of digital security audits, trainings, and rapid response actions for Iranian human rights defenders and organizations. He is in a unique position to assess the security risks and needs of Iranian organizations, especially those who are in contact with at-risk people, such as activists and journalists. Rashidi worked as the internet security and digital rights researcher at the Center for Human Rights in Iran, where he conducts in-depth research, data collection and analysis on internet security and access in Iran, internet policy and infrastructure, and the tools and methods of state-sponsored censorship and hacking.
