In this episode of Free Speech Friday, I break down why KOSA is one of the most dangerous internet censorship bills in Congress, why tech billionaires like Sam Altman and Elon Musk actually SUPPORT it, and what the media is getting completely wrong about this so-called "trade-off."I'm joined by Ari Cohn, one of the top First Amendment lawyers in the country, to explain exactly how KOSA's "duty of care" provision will force platforms to mass-censor content, including LGBTQ voices, mental health support communities, reproductive health information, and more. We cover the junk science behind the social media moral panic, the age verification privacy nightmare, how the FTC could become the internet's censor-in-chief, and why we've seen this exact panic before with comic books, video games, and television.Click the link below to take action now!!! https://www.badinternetbills.com In this video, we cover:What the Kids Online Safety Act actually doesHow KOSA could impact social media platformsAge verification and online privacy issuesThe potential effects on LGBTQ communities, mental health resources, and online speechWhy Elon Musk and OpenAI support KOSA.The reality of age verification and the death of online privacy. How KOSA targets niche communities and support groups.

This week on Breaking Battleground, we tackle the biggest technological and geopolitical shifts shaping our future. First, Aaron Zelinger, CEO of Closure Intelligence, and Dan Dow, District Attorney of San Luis Obispo County, join us to discuss how artificial intelligence is transforming law enforcement and the legal system. From cartel investigations to protecting sensitive case data, they explain how AI tools are improving truth-finding, safeguarding privacy, and helping prosecutors make critical decisions — including in serious child exploitation cases. We also explore compliance concerns, government applications, and the future of AI in enterprise. Next, congressional candidate John Trobaugh (AZ-01) breaks down how Arizona can win the AI revolution. He makes the case for embracing innovation to drive productivity and economic growth — not fearing it. The conversation dives into Arizona's water strategy, data centers, defense manufacturing, small modular reactors, uranium production, and smart regulatory reform to keep America competitive. Finally, in a podcast-exclusive segment, Emilia James and Evan Firoozi of NetFreedom Pioneers share how they're delivering life-changing internet access to Iranians facing regime blackouts and censorship. From VPN networks to deploying over 300 Starlink terminals, they reveal how technology is empowering citizens, reconnecting the diaspora, and challenging authoritarian information control. AI. Economic power. Internet freedom. This episode connects the dots between technology and liberty at home and abroad.
Writer and editor Yi-Ling Liu joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and Jennifer Maritza McCauley to talk about state-controlled censorship. Liu, the author of a new book, The Wall Dancers: Searching for Freedom and Connection on the Chinese Internet, explores what it means to build community through the internet while contending with surveillance and suppression. Liu, Terrell, and McCauley discuss the sale of TikTok to U.S. companies, the growing online surveillance and censorship in the United States, and how American citizens can learn from Chinese “netizens” about how to survive under censorship. Liu tells the stories of four people– a renowned feminist, a gay dating app entrepreneur, an aspiring rapper, and a famous science fiction writer—who all found ways to dance around The Great Firewall and earn success for themselves and for their communities online. Liu details the widespread impact of each of these “wall dancers” and reflects on the inspirations that led them to foster social change through online media. Liu explores the importance of cultural exchange and connection online and considers her own personal experience with living and creating under censorship. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is pushing a bill that would END free speech on the internet, and he has absolutely no idea what he's talking about.[FREE SPEECH FRIDAY]Join the Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/cw/taylorlorenz Subscribe to my Substack: https://www.usermag.co Section 230 is one of the most important laws in the history of the internet. It is often called “the law that created the internet” because it protects websites, forums, blogs, comment sections, Wikipedia, and every platform that hosts user-generated content. But for some reason, actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt wants it gone. Yesterday, he released a video following backlash from his talk last week in congress, where he called on Senators to repeal Section 230.Almost every single thing he said in his response video was factually wrong. For this week's Free Speech Friday episode, I'm debunking Gordon-Levitt's crusade against Section 230 and unpacking how repealing Section 230 would actually mass-censor the internet, wipe out indie platforms, destroy LGBTQ and marginalized online spaces, and hand total monopoly power over to Meta, Google, and powerful billionaires. I also break down the far-right groups like Morality in Media and The Heritage Foundation, which has made Section 230 repeal core to their Project 2025 tech policy agenda. If Section 230 is repealed, the cost of defending user speech could jump from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars per lawsuit. In this episode, Ziya and I speak openly about what is happening in Iran, not as outsiders, but as Iranians who have spent most of their lives in Iran and whose families are still living there. What the regime and much of the media describe as “protests” is, in reality, a nationwide revolution against the Islamic Republic. At the time of publishing this video, the Iranian regime has shut down the internet for more than four consecutive days in an attempt to suppress information, isolate the population, and escalate violence without scrutiny. During this uprising, more than 12,000 people have been killed by the regime's oppressive forces. We address the roots of this revolution, the regime's long history of massacres and misinformation, the role of censorship, and the deliberate distortion of events—particularly around support for the exiled Crown Prince, Reza Pahlavi. What if online harassment isn't random at all—but part of a strategy? In this explosive episode of The Healthier Tech Podcast, host R Blank talks with Viktorya Vilk, Director of Digital Safety and Free Expression at PEN America, about how governments, corporations, and tech platforms are turning the internet into a weapon against free speech. Viktorya reveals how political power, economic pressure, and digital surveillance now intersect to create an ecosystem where journalists, writers, and even librarians are targeted for speaking out. She breaks down how authoritarian tactics, media consolidation, and platform indifference have combined to make the online world hostile to truth—and what each of us can do to push back. In This Episode: How the U.S. dropped to 57th in global press freedom rankings—and why that's not an accident The chilling new playbook: online harassment as a censorship tool Why Big Tech's business model thrives on surveillance, fear, and silence How Facebook and Google siphoned 70% of online ad revenue, collapsing local journalism Real-life examples of reporters attacked, arrested, and digitally terrorized for telling the truth The practical digital safety steps every person can take—starting today Why Viktorya refuses to give in to “tech nihilism” and insists users have power Why You Should Listen This isn't just a podcast about harassment or privacy—it's about democracy, power, and your voice. Viktorya explains how the same digital forces that endanger journalists are eroding safety and free expression for everyone. But she also shares concrete tools to rebuild your sense of control online: from password hygiene and privacy audits to collective advocacy that pressures tech platforms to act responsibly. She makes one thing clear: silence is the goal of harassment—and awareness is the antidote. China's Great Firewall blocks social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok, along with certain political topics, streaming platforms, and even Google. For years, we've heard about what China's firewall keeps out — but much less about how it's achieved. Now, a massive leak is shedding light on how the country's censorship technology works and which countries it's being exported to.Today, the Globe's Asia Correspondent, James Griffiths is here. He's an expert on China's online censorship, and he's the author of The Great Firewall of China. He'll explain what the leak exposes, which countries China is replicating its firewall in, and what it all means for the country's growing global influence.Questions? Comments? Ideas? NewsGuard, a for-profit company rating news outlets' credibility, is accused of being part of a broader censorship cartel, using its ratings and advertising partnerships to censor targeted outlets. The FCC plans to take broad actions to restore First Amendment rights, potentially fining companies or bringing them before Congress for shadowbanning or other forms of censorship. The rise of internet censorship by big tech companies is negatively impacting content creators and free speech, prompting a call for regulatory changes and the exploration of alternative platforms. The Biden Administration and government entities pressured social media platforms to censor information, including removing posts and labeling entire websites as untrustworthy or high-risk to suppress certain viewpoints. YouTube allegedly shadowbanned conservative channels before the 2020 election, including a 500K+ subscriber channel, with traffic restored post-election, suggesting audience overlap as the reason. Websites faced pressure from advertising agencies in 2020-2021 to remove content deemed misinformation or wrong think about topics like guns, vaccines, and mask mandates, risking ad revenue loss if non-compliant. 00:00 New FCC chairman Brandan Carr could reshape tech regulations, as social media censorship impacts content creators, highlighting the need for diverse revenue sources. 03:12 Brendan Carr criticizes big tech censorship and government pressure, highlighting the impact of misinformation audits and content moderation on online discourse. 06:35 Big Tech CEOs are accused of contributing to censorship through fact-checking practices, with companies like Google and Facebook facing pressure to limit free speech and control information flow. 11:15 Google's control over information and partnerships with censorship entities threaten free speech and democracy, necessitating a reclaiming of rights by Americans. 16:09 Internet censorship is harming content creators, especially conservatives, with significant drops in YouTube traffic linked to algorithm changes. 19:08 Internet censorship is prompting users to explore alternative platforms, raising concerns about bias and financial impacts on major sites like YouTube and Twitch. 22:08 Censorship by tech companies has sparked public backlash and heightened awareness against media control in America. 24:30 Join clownfishminus.com for exclusive content, merch discounts, and community engagement.

In this episode, Andres Azpurua, Executive Director of a Venezuelan digital human rights NGO, joins us to discuss ongoing government internet censorship in Venezuela, especially during and after the recent controversial presidential election. Andres explains the technical methods used to document and counteract censorship, such as DNS tampering and state-sponsored phishing, highlighting how these actions are intertwined with political repression. Ultimately, the organization aims to hold the government accountable and increase the political cost of censorship by documenting evidence and advocating for internet freedom as a human right.
Russia's federal censor has been throttling YouTube playback speeds for the last month or so, just like it slowed Twitter data transfer speeds back in 2021. Throughout August, Russian Internet users have reported sudden and widespread outages in access to popular apps and services like Telegram, WhatsApp, Skype, Wikipedia, Steam, Discord, and more. While the RuNet crackdown has become a familiar feature of the Putin regime, its technical side is hard to understand. For help with the science of Russian Internet censorship and surveillance, Meduza spoke to Sarkis Darbinyan, a senior legal counsel to the digital rights group RKS Global (which recently published a report titled “State of Surveillance: A Study on How the Russian State, Through Laws and Technology, Carries Out Digital Surveillance”) and Philipp Dietrich, a project officer for the “Risks of the Sovereign Internet for Russia and Beyond” project at the German Council on Foreign Relations's Center for Order and Governance in Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia.
