Welcome back to Pursuing Pixels. We've got the usual trio in the house once again this week, and we've all been playing some stuff on Nintendo Switch... First, John's been continuing to dig through his backlog of indie games and shares his feelings on Paratopic — along with some additional thoughts on various low rez horror games and walking simulators. It's all things 2D Mario after that, as Randall & Kevin have both been diving full-tilt into Super Mario Bros. Wonder — and they each have all sorts of things to say about their time with the game so far! Timestamps: Paratopic - 00:03:23 Super Mario Bros. Wonder - 00:13:33 Thanks for taking the time to listen! If you'd like to find us elsewhere on the Internet, you can find us at:
This episode of Attack the Backlog is all about Paratopic, a game I can't quite explain, where jump cuts are plentiful as you play; a game you could finish in just one day, in just one sitting, in fact, I say; a game I recommend despite my haze, for fans of David Lynch, Twin Peaks, and his crazy ways; a game I played, that you can play, so I say, not tomorrow, but today; if I were to give it a grade, I'd quote the Fonz, and give it an aaaaay.

Portland-based Colorado-raised artist Berkley will release his new single 'Fiesta Day',previewing his debut full-length album 'Pueblo', to be released via Oregon label Big Secret Records. Interrogating the small spaces shared between what-ifs of the past and the realities of the present is where Berkley's songwriting sparkles. On 'Fiesta Day', Berkley blows the dust off the events that shape us to reveal what follows. Over the pulsing rhythm that propels the track, Berkley revisits the end of a teenage friendship with clarity brought by time. The track pumps at a windows-down-driving tempo while Berkley pleads with the estranged: I don't want you near / but I wish you were here / please understand me before the end of the world. Set during Fiesta Day, a local celebration of Latinx culture in his hometown of Pueblo, Colorado, Berkley reclaims the pain of growing apart by reimagining a final conversation. Warbling Moog synthesizers, shaky guitars, and a lonesome piano represent the haunting memories of a lost connection. Inspired by the first-person experimental video game Paratopic, which switches players' perspective and place in time, the accompanying video takes viewers through different moments and locales in Berkley's life, from a stretch of interstate in preCOVID New Mexico to Berkley's early 2000s high school years, his 20s spent in Los Angeles, and a 2008 sold-out performance in a northern Colorado theater. All footage was captured by the artist in his efforts to audio-visual cataloge his career. Berkley is the musical moniker of Andrew Jones, a notable recording engineer who now channels his production and songwriting talents into this project. After exploring broad musical territory from recording with former Cher bassist and ASCAP award winner Bob Parr to 2016's power pop collaboration with members of The Offspring to 2017's “gorgeous” (AV Club) synthesizer project Sound for Bombs, Jones decided to sharpen his focus on electronic elements and pop song forms. Earlier, he released 'Pueblo Nights', backed up by members of the Austin-based band Watering, which explores themes of memory, youth, and growth in Berkley's hometown of Pueblo, Colorado as he recalls being in young dumb love in a small city's punk rock and heavy metal music scene. Its straightforward laidback pop grooves are driven by shaky electric guitar tones and chiming keyboards.

00:00 - “I'll allow a Magnum”. 08:34 - It's been in development Hell, but Uncharted's tale of stealing a lost treasure is fun. It stumbles here and there, but the thrill of seeing the series on the screen, and some fleeting moments of excellence, means we're excited for the inevitable sequel. 19:00 - The Blustery Day. 27:09 - Being back in the world of Aloy is lovely, as long as you've played the first game… and we have, so we're really enjoying Horizon Forbidden West. And gosh it looks glorious with some incredible acting and character animations. 35:06 - High Score lets you gamble in a safe space (it's a push your luck dice game), with that typical level of polish and quality you'd expect from Reiner Knizia and Kosmos. 39:43 - Almadi is from Funnyfox, via Hachette, and while it's a teensy bit like Carcassonne, a smidgen like Wingspan, but it's definitely its own experience. 44:42 - Roll Camera!... oh my word. This is quite possibly the most well-implemented themes-to-mechanics board game we've played. Completely co-operative, it's your job to make a “successful” film from five scenes… but what does “successful” mean? 54:37 - Taking a moment to say thank you. 56:36 - Paratopic is an absurdly high quality cheap thrill from Arbitrary Metric and Baltoro Games. It's smart and creepy, with looks ripped straight out of the late PS1/N64 era, and Silent Hill sensibilities. All that, and the origins of Poirot's moustache, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Our Spotify Playlist is over on Spotify, and gathers together lots of great thematic music inspired by the stuff we talk about.

Are you into scary games with deeply drawn characters and surprising narrative turns that will keep you captivated for hours? If so, then you should avoid Paratopic like the plague, because the subject of this episode features absolutely none of that! Instead, we talk about what it does feature, which includes pretension, boredom, and a complete lack of cohesion. It does feature some cool sound design, though, and that's something, we guess. Sort of. In all, we have more fun talking about why the game is a failure than either of us did actually playing the title, and probably do so for longer than it takes to beat the game. Does that make it… secretly successful? (Hint: no it doesn't). Afterwards, we briefly talk about the best cyberpunk game of 2020: Final Fantasy VII Remake. What's that, you want to hear our quick thoughts on Cyberpunk 2077? Well sure, but since that's only the third best cyberpunk game we're covering, first we need to talk about Luigi's Mansion 3, which features a Virtual Boy and so is therefore the most cyberpunk thing imaginable. After Blake's done punking us with his rundown of the most cyber games he's been playing, which can't help but lead us to a lengthy discussion of CD Projekt's 2077 disastrous scandals, Sean takes us to tabletop roleplaying town, though he doesn't give too much away about the upcoming campaign so as not to spoil Blake.
The truth is out there... maybe? This episode I played two Halloweeny games: the bizarre fractured narrative of 45 minute indie-horror game Paratopic, and the surprisingly wholesome Speed Dating For Ghosts. Paratopic is a cursed Playstation 1 game. Or perhaps it's an experiment in first person storytelling. Or perhaps it's just creepy AF. This award winning game from 2018 just came to Nintendo Switch, and it'll...

We're back at the Indie Horror Rodeo, exploring a couple of games that made waves by combining vintage aesthetics with downright bizarre approaches to narrative and gameplay. Paratopic takes us on a disjointed, dystopian journey while Claire guides us to the heart of Silent Hill - by making us constantly check the map, of course.
In this disquieting post-Halloween episode, Kevyn has finally exiled himself into Phone Game-Jail for his Time Crimes, but that doesn't stop him from blowin' the bloody doors off with his old pal Jace talking about scare-'em-up Luigi's Mansion 3, and taking a small trip down memory lane with our old friends, Flubber and Ultraman. We cleanse the palette by talking about the Watchmen TV show, and, more importantly, the recent happenings of "Riverdale", before we gather 'round the campfire to talk about our game of the week, Paratopic. From horror, to comedy, to thriller, to drama—Sky Pirate Radio has more where that came from, Buster!
We're joined by a special guest, indie game developer Drew Katsikas (find him on twitter at @vmpr_cmptr_ppl), to talk about the wide world of horror video games! This week, one of us loves a video game, the other is wrong. (and now you know who writes these descriptions...) We wax about the short indie horror game Paratopic. Chatting up its PS1/90s visual aesthetic and radical sound design, eventually getting lost along the way talking about the value of horror as a genre.
Startling encounters, body horror, and Cronenberg-ian themes, oh my! This week Blake and Jordan play Paratopic, a narrative game about smuggled VHS tapes, beings from another reality, and just feeling kind of uneasy for 40 minutes. We talk about why this game is so effective at unsettling you and lament that more games don’t use retro, PS1-style graphics. The Q&A largely consists of questions about Corey's experience as a gay man and his views on masculinity. We welcome Jessica Harvey, one of the developers and creators of the ephemeral and haunting Paratopic onto the show to talk about horror games, Tangiers, writing, politics, art, and what one does when one develops a game. Completing our troika of dev episodes, this should not be missed!Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/no-cartridge-audio/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast?
