This week, Kelsie walks us through the case of Willie Pickton, known as the biggest serial killer Canada has ever seen. Having grown up on a pig farm, Willie Pickton was no stranger to the world of farming, slaughtering and butchering. Neglected since he was born, Willie lived in utter filth while forced to work on the farm in between classes at school. When his parents passed away, the farm was left to Willie, his brother and his sister. His sister helped run the business from several towns away, and now that the Pickton brothers had full control of the farm, all hell broke loose. Teagasc Pig Advisor, Emer McCrum, joins Ciarán Carroll on the latest episode of the Pig Edge podcast to discuss some of the main topics and talking points from the 2022 Teagasc National Pig Farmers' Conference. Producers, farm staff and industry colleagues were welcomed back to an in-person event this year, the first since 2019 due to Covid 19 restrictions. However, the conference was set against a very difficult backdrop for producers who by that point had endured 14 months of a crisis, the likes of which have been the worst in living memory. The conference therefore, was built around the current climate with papers covering the technical to the financial all relating back to topical issues within the pig industry. Emer and Ciarán discuss the key points of interest that can be taken from the conference for producers and staff. The New Zealand Government is proposing drastic changes to pig farming practices even as we face a wave of imported pork produced using practices that are illegal in New Zealand. These changes could result in the deaths of thousands of additional piglets, pig farms shutting down, and force Kiwis to rely on even more imported pork.https://www.supportnzpigfarmers.co.nz/ Our pig farmers support science-backed improvements to animal welfare, but the proposed changes could force farmers out of business and put the price of New Zealand born and raised pork out of the reach of many Kiwis.

How much impact has Brexit and the pandemic had on the problem? We discuss with Alicia Chivers, Chief Executive of the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution, and East Yorkshire pig farmer Kate Moore. Conservative MP Sir David Ames, who was killed on Friday had been in Parliament since 1983 . Issues raised by the people he represented were top of his agenda. The SNP calls on the Government to provide financial support to help the pig industry. Hundreds of pigs have already been culled. This is down to a lack of butchers in processing plants which means they're taking fewer pigs. The National Pig Association says 120,000 extra animals remain on farms, and farmers are running out of space. They say a cull is a last resort, and if pigs have to be shot on the farm they're then have to incinerated as they're not allowed into the food chain. We hear from Scottish farmers. All this week we're looking at the wine industry in the UK. As the climate changes vineyards are having to plan differently for the future. One South Devon winery is tackling this by planting acres of a red grape varietal that they think will be a safer bet. Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

Pig Farmers can often spend a considerable amount of time grading and sorting pigs throughout the production stages, but in this episode of the Pig Edge, Specialised Pig Advisor Michael McKeon talks to Amy Quinn to discuss why this well-meant practice might in some cases be costing producers. Michael first coined the term “Evenitis” to best describe this practice at the 2015 Teagasc Pig Farmers conference and he tells us that this issue hasn't gone away. Michael firstly takes us through what exactly Evenitis is and details the main issues associated with repeated mixing or regrading of pigs. Michael discusses the problem areas as well as best practices to operate by in the farrowing, weaner and finisher houses.
