In the immediate years after World War II, the trajectory of America's pastime looked unstoppable. By 1949, Minor League Baseball had swelled to 59 leagues, 448 teams, and some 10,000 players - the largest network in its history. But within a decade, the advent of television, suburban migration, and shifting leisure habits began to drain fans and revenue. Hundreds of teams folded, and by 1963, the entire minor-league system was on the brink of collapse. We explore that turbulent era - the golden age of small-town clubs and ballparks, the struggles of owners and players to stay afloat, and the rescue plan that reshaped the minors for the rest of the twentieth century - with SABR baseball researcher George Pawlush, whose current books "When Minor League Baseball Almost Went Bust: 1946–1963" (a SABR-driven collection of essays); and "Dawn and Dusk of the Colonial League," which chronicles a short-lived Class B circuit from 1947 to 1950, both illuminate this fascinating period. Pawlush describes stories of teams traveling on dangerously aging buses, cash-strapped franchises uprooting for survival, and the rise of players both transformative (like Jackie Robinson, whose minor-league stints with the Montreal Royals in 1946 helped pave the way for MLB integration) - and forgotten (like Ron Necciai, whose early 1952 strikeout feats dazzled fans and earned a call-up to the Pittsburgh Pirates later that summer) before injuries ended their careers. We'll dig into how the minors were both a proving ground for future stars and a fragile ecosystem vulnerable to social and economic change: What caused the rapid collapse of so many leagues in the 1950s? How did the Colonial League embody both the promise and fragility of postwar baseball? And how did the 1963 Player Development Plan finally stabilize the farm system? + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable The "Good Seats" Store: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 BUY THE BOOKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): "When Minor League Baseball Almost Went Bust: 1946–1963": https://amzn.to/49dMQcX "Dawn and Dusk of the Colonial League": https://amzn.to/3WNVx6g SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats FIND AND FOLLOW: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/GoodSeatsStillAvailable Web: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/good-seats-still-available/
Former Pirates catcher and current SportsNet Pittsburgh analyst Michael “Fort” McKenry joins the guys to break down the Pirates' catching situation heading into 2026. The crew debates Henry Davis vs. Joey Bart vs. Rafael Flores, talks about whether defense or offense matters more behind the plate, and gets Fort's firsthand perspective on what makes a good catcher in today's game. They also discuss Bryan Reynolds' struggles, the Bednar trade fallout, and which players gave fans real hope heading into next season — from Spencer Horwitz's breakout to Isaac Mattson's rise. Plus, McKenry shares stories from his time in the Arizona Fall League and life around the game post-retirement. Pirates insider Jason Mackey from the PG joined the show. Jason is not confident the Pirates will hand out a multi-year free agent deal, which they haven't done in nearly a decade. He expects the Pirates moves to be in trade form, like a Mitch Keller deal or something else with their young pitchers. Jason said the Pirates still probably have some shame in the Tyler Glasnow trade, even though it was under the last regime. Jason doesn't expect Tommy Pham or Isaiah Kiner-Falefa will be in Pittsburgh next season. Jason wouldn't be surprised if the Pirates ‘just run it back with a lot of what they had this past year.'
Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Jaden Woods joins North Shore Nine for a laid-back “Get to Know” interview as he gets ready to head west for the Arizona Fall League. The left-hander opens up about his routine on and off the field, from playing golf every Monday with teammates to learning how to face adversity in Double-A Altoona. Woods breaks down what makes the Eastern League so tough, how he's embraced life as a reliever, and why conviction will be his theme heading into 2026. We also talk fun stuff — Chipotle orders, golf handicaps, favorite Atlanta artists, and even a potential Georgia–Ole Miss rivalry with fellow prospect Derek Diamond.
Jameson Taillon is pitching against...Quinn Priester in the Cubs-Brewers game. Travis Williams said the Pirates have the best young pitching staffs in baseball. Should Andrew McCutchen be back as the Pirates DH? Joe and Bob both think the Pirates need to upgrade. Joe wants the Pirates to add key bats regardless of position. Jeff Patton of Baseball Card Castle, Starkey's Card of the Week.
10 years (and a day) since the Pirates were last in a playoff game – the 2015 Wild Card loss to the Cubs. Those teams from the three year stretch between 2013 and 2015 are remembered fondly – as they should be by some fans of a younger age. Should we subscribe more to the Paul Skenes mindset though? He wants to bring more than just a Wild Card win and a Divisional Series loss in 5 games to this city. The guys mentioned the double standard we have with the Steelers, who lose in the Wild Card round almost annually. There is no blaming of the fans because we should remember those teams well, but not THIS well, due to the ineptitude of the front office since then.
Former MLB pitcher Matt Clement joined the show. The guys wanted Matt's reaction to the pitching matchup tonight in Milwaukee, which features 2 former Pirates – Jameson Taillon and Quinn Priester. Matt said you can compare those guys to other former Buccos that have found greener pastures elsewhere on the mound. The guys asked Matt about different philosophies in small markets that help those franchises make the playoffs. Matt doesn't see why the Pirates would part with Andrew McCutchen even though he's not the same player he once was.
We're joined by Pittsburgh Pirates pitching prospect Derek Diamond as he hits the road for his second stint in the Arizona Fall League. Derek opens up about his 2025 season, including the challenges of missing time with injury, his return to Altoona for a playoff push, and the adrenaline of being back on the mound. He talks about the transition from starter to bullpen, how he's building his pitch arsenal around a much-improved fastball, and why his changeup has become a true out pitch. We also dive into his AFL experiences—what it's like facing top prospects, learning a new role, and even starting the Fall League All-Star Game. Plus, Derek shares off-day favorites in Arizona, his love of golf, his offseason training goals, and a little Ole Miss vs. Georgia football trash talk. This is a fun and insightful conversation with one of the Pirates' most intriguing arms—don't miss it!

Austin believes the 2015 Pirates would have won the World Series if there was a three-game Wild Card like today. The Phillies had over 31,000 fans watch the intersquad scrimmage. Oregon quarterback Dante Moore is the favorite to win the Heisman. Sportsline gives the Steelers an 85% chance to make the playoffs.
Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette thinks the reunion tour is over for Andrew McCutchen and the Pirates. Mackey thinks McCutchen could be looking for more of a full-time role in the lineup. Donny and Austin want McCutchen to come back. The Pirates have larger issues at third base, left field, and shortstop.
Claudio and his friend Rick Mitchell discuss the Pittsburgh Pirates
Nicholas "Harry" Callas creates a list of upcoming, unrestricted MLB free agents that he believes the Pirates would have interest in based on their tendencies over the last several seasons. Adam Crowley and Dorin Dickerson react.

The quarterbacks in the AFC North are Aaron Rodgers, Dillon Gabriel, Jack Browning, and Cooper Rush. Joe Burrow has been sacked 201 times in 71 games. 100% Chris would feel confident picking the Steelers to win the AFC North. The Steelers are still having too many defensive communication issues.
The MLB playoffs are underway. Mason Miller threw a 104 mph pitch against Chicago. Ken in Beaver gives Cam Heyward props for helping to force turnovers with passes defended. Roman Wilson has barely gotten on the field with the tight ends seeing increased snaps.

Adam Crowley and Dorin Dickerson wonder what Pirates' GM Ben Cherington has done to warrant his return for the 2026 season.
PM Team FULL SHOW 10-2-2025 with Poni and Donny switching roles for the day!
-Donny brings up a Steelers trade rumor. For Jaguars WR Tim Patrick. Most everyone has no idea who that is. Which you would think would make the guys think it would be a big waste of time. However Mullsy LIKES Patrick. Because he put up WR2 stats in Denver. The two agree having this discussion is really just a bad sign for Roman Wilson. -Ray Fittipaldo joins the show. The Steelers insider explains why Roman Wilson cant get out of the doghouse. And gets into why Pat Friermuth is having such a bad season. -TRT: Total Request Thursday. The listeners wanted the guys to talk about the ex-Pirates having success in the playoffs.
-Donny and Mullsy keep the baseball talk going with the Tigers-Guardians game getting underway. The two talk about Cleveland being consistently good. And Pittsburgh being consistently bad. It's been that way for a long time. It's pretty depressing. -Bob Pompeani jumped on the show. He detailed his time in Ireland. And gave his thoughts on the state of the Steelers at 3-1. -PM Team Power Rankings. Top 5 scary movies with it being spooky season.
-Poni is producing the show for the 1st time and doing a masterful job. He's making it look quite easy as a matter of fact. Donny is hosting and starts the show by talking about the #1 issue facing the Pirates this offseason: their need for hitting help. And why Mitch Keller is the player that needs traded to get hitting help. Mullsy pontificates about Keller going to a new team and becoming a star. "I need someone here who can hit." Mullsy he used the word "WAR" more than time in his life. -Calls are supposed to be on the Pirates but the show has already gone off the rails. -Jason Mackey, PG Pirates writer joined the show. He thinks the Pirates payroll will be around $90 million. He was surprised that Ben Cherington was retained. The Pirates want to get rid of Mitch Keller because he's not good enough to justify his salary. Jason reports Oscar Marin was fired because of what Pirates pitchers said about him in player exit interviews. Mackey believes Andrew McCutchen has played his last game with the Pirates.
Marty speaks with Theresa Kailsmith (City Council) about a meeting focused on Pittsburgh Pirates. Jeff McCausland (Retired Colonel) joined the show to comment of Secretary of War Pete Hegseths' position on fitness and the military.
George Edward "Rube" Waddell (October 13, 1876 – April 1, 1914) was an American pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB). A left-hander, he played for 13 years, with the Louisville Colonels, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Chicago Orphans in the National League, as well as the Philadelphia Athletics and St. Louis Browns in the American League. Born in Bradford, Pennsylvania, and raised in Prospect, Pennsylvania, Waddell was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946. Waddell is best remembered for his highly eccentric behavior, and for being a remarkably dominant strikeout pitcher in an era when batters were expert at making contact. He had an excellent fastball, a sharp-breaking curveball, a screwball, and superb control; his strikeout-to-walk ratio was almost 3-to-1, and he led the major leagues in strikeouts for six consecutive years.
The Pirates are keeping Ben Cherington and Don Kelly. Bob wanted the Pirates to move on from Cherington and was surprised that he stayed. Bob wants to see the Pirates sign Pete Alonso. The Pirates are moving on from Oscar Marin, Brent Strom, and Mike Rabello. Why are the Pirates moving on from their pitching coach??
Pirates fans are irritated that the Pirates are keeping members of the front office that have put this 71-win team together.
Dan was somewhat surprised the Pirates moved on from Oscar Marin. It's hard to justify why Ben Cherington is back. Dan thinks there will be more money flowing throughout the sport for other franchises with a cap and floor. He doesn't believe the Pirates have the revenue for a $120 million payroll.
Adam Crowley and Dorin Dickerson wonder if the Pirates let go of pitching coach Oscar Marin because they don't believe the staff was the best it could have been this season.
Adam Crowley and Dorin Dickerson criticize the Steelers for a special teams decision that was made during Sunday's win over the Minnesota Vikings.
In the wake of pitching coach Oscar Marin not being retained by the Pirates, Adam Crowley and Dorin Dickerson look at the team's offensive numbers in 2025 to compare how many runs they were scoring to how many they were giving up.
Former MLB pitcher Matt Clement joined the show. Matt reacted to the end of the Pirates season and some of the changes they have made. Matt gave his thoughts on the return of Ben Cherington for 2026. He thinks it is ‘inevitable' that the team trades Mitch Keller to get some offense on this roster. Chris had Matt react to some of the comments from Travis Williams with the media. Matt posed a good question back to Chris about big market versus small market in Major League Baseball.
The Pirates parted ways with a few coaches yesterday, including Oscar Marin, who was the leader of one of the best pitching staffs in baseball. Should Matt Hague be safe as the hitting coach after a historically bad offensive year? The guys wondered if there was something behind the scenes with Marin and if he didn't get the support of Paul Skenes or other guys on the staff.
The Pirates are bringing back manager Don Kelly and general manager Ben Cherington. Cherington is 365-505 as Pirates GM. Cherington finished in last place in Boston every season except the season they won the World Series. The Pirates were worse this year than the last two seasons. They haven't shown enough to give fans hope.
Pirates fans sound off with us on their Bucs frustrations. Do the Pirates have proven hitters? MLB teams rely on revenue sharing and TV contracts.
Bob Nutting called this full season unacceptable, but is bringing back Travis Williams and Ben Cherington. Noah doesn't understand how Cherington and Williams are back. Multiple players were outspoken about the team and players went out of their way to let him know how bad things went. Noah thinks the Pirates will trade Mitch Keller and likely be an underwhelming return.
Pirates President Travis Wiliams said the Pirates are dedicated to make the playoffs, "Period. Full stop." He said they have the best young pitching staff in baseball. The Pirates offense needs significant additions to be close to winning. Williams said the historically bad offensive season can be taken care of.
Recapping our Pirates record predictions. Austin picks the Mariners to win the World Series and Cal Raleigh to hit eight home runs! Donny picks the Phillies and really enjoys watching Kyle Schwarber!
Pirates' broadcaster Neil Walker comes on The Fan Hotline to react to the news that the team has extended Don Kelly to be the permanent manager.
93.7 The Fan's Jeff Hathhorn comes on The Fan Hotline to talk about the latest developments with the Pirates and to react to the Steelers' win on Sunday.
Noah Hiles from The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette comes on The Fan Hotline to react to the latest developments with the Pirates, including the extension of manager Don Kelly, with Dorin Dickerson and Nicholas "Harry" Callas.

Today, Don Kelly and the Pittsburgh Pirates agreed to an extension bringing him back as the skipper of the 2026 Pirates. It was also announced immediately after his press conference that General Manager Ben Cherington has been reassured that he will return for the 2026 season. Seems like not much change is happening among the front office immediately after the Pirates finished with 91 losses. Thoughts?
