Point Of View: Students cannot read or write at grade level, know little about American history, and are unable to pass a basic citizenship exam, yet the Department of Education has prioritized spending over $200 million taxpayer dollars, since 2021, to fund counseling programs for antiracism, microaggressions, white privilege, and whiteness at 48 universities. In fact, the Department of Education has spent over a billion dollars in grants to fund DEI initiatives throughout our education system, from kindergarten through college. The Department of Education is not the only culprit. The Leadership Institute’s Campus Reform has reported how the National Science Foundation has increased its granted funded DEI projects to higher education institutions increased from .29% in 2021 to 27% in 2024. Other agencies have also funneled money to our higher education institutions to promote the DEI industrial complex. This isn’t an investment in our students’ future, it is a racket to fund a far-left political agenda. As a parent and a professor, I would prefer (and demand) that our tax dollars go to a real education that prioritizes academic excellence, critical thinking, and a genuine understanding of history and civics, rather than ideological indoctrination.When my semester began a week ago, only a handful of students were able to pass a citizenship exam. Just days ago, I asked my class, "What is the primary purpose of government," only to be met with silence and blank stares. This is the devastating reality of our education system. It should come as no surprise that 60% of students entering two-year colleges and 40% of those entering four-year institutions have to take at least one remedial course for content they should have learned and mastered in high school. So, they may not be able to read, write, or do math at the college level, but if they are attending Michigan State University, at least students can earn credit for MSU’s racial constructs and racism in healthcare program. Given last week’s news from the National Assessment for Educational Progress that America has once again hit historic lows in student proficiency, it is time for the Trump administration and Congress to take bold action. Campus Reform is reporting that the Trump administration has begun drafting an executive order that will begin to pare down the Department of Education and encourage Congress to pass legislation that eliminates the Department of Education. Critics argue that the closure of the Department of Education will lead to a student body unable to read and write. I hate to break it to them, but that’s the current reality, and comes as the Department of Education’s budget has increased over 200% since 1990. Congress must also reevaluate the use of grant funding to our higher education institutions. Federal tax dollars should not be used to indoctrinate students or compel our higher education institutions to develop tools to silence and censor Americans. Instead, every grant provided to higher education should be based on improving student outcomes that can be measured. Any institution that prioritizes activism over academics should lose any federal funding they receive until they get back to the core mission of academia. Taxpayers should not subsidize any political party, ideology, or agenda. The time for half-measures is over, and if we are serious about fixing our broken education system, we can no longer tolerate the waste, fraud, and abuse, that has left an entire generation thoroughly unprepared for the real world. A January California Superior Court ruling will, if upheld, permanently strike down the most draconian pension-slashing initiative in California history: San Diego’s Proposition B. The 2012 pension grab in San Diego, which wiped out secure pensions for all city workers except police officers, has been the subject of an eight-year court fight. In the latest edition of CPF Fire Wire, President Brian Rice talks with San Diego City Firefighters Local 145 President Jesse Conner about the long legal fight, what the court decision means for retirement security, and the impact the San Diego fight will have on the ongoing effort to provide secure retirement for firefighters.  

2021 is a new year and with it comes a new set of laws, rules, and guidelines. Are you prepared? The Minimum Wage Rate in Missouri for private employers changed effective January 1, 2021. The Governor’s office announced the new rate is $10.30 per hour. All private businesses are required to pay at least the minimum hourly rate, except retail and service businesses whose annual gross sales are less than $500,000. They are still covered under the Federal Minimum Wage Law. As a result of the voter approved Proposition B in November of 2018, the minimum wage will increase 85 cents per hour each year through 2023 ultimately resulting in a minimum wage of $12 per hour in that year. Compensation for tipped employees must also total at least $10.30 per hour and employers are required to pay tipped employees at least 50 percent of the minimum wage – or $5.15 per hour, plus any amount necessary to bring the employee’s total compensation to the minimum of $10.30. More than 61 percent of San Francisco voters approved Proposition B, a charter amendment to split the Department of Public Works in two and add oversight commissions to both departments as part of an effort to address city corruption and get cleaner streets. Matt Haney, District 6 supervisor and author of the measure, said the new department doesn’t need to be created until 2022, but city legislators can get to work now on building the oversight commission for the existing Department of Public Works.

San Francisco has faced many scandals in which public officials abused their power for personal, political or organizational gain. It’s about 10 pm on November 6th, 2018 and the final Proposition B votes are being collected from around the city. Prop B was a ballot measure created by the Fire Union that would give firefighters equal pay with police officers of corresponding rank and years of service.That night, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner remained vocally steadfast in his stance that if Prop B passed, there would be hundreds of layoffs of firefighters and police officers and a reduction of services. He likened the pay parity initiative to a storm, saying “when you see a storm coming, you have to begin to make preparations.” For the Fire Union and its president Marty Lancton, this night was decades in the making but the last few years had been particularly eventful, more so than ever before. Pension reform that drastically reduced the retirements of firefighters, consistently stalled contract negotiations, years of Prop B legal battles, an acrid relationship with city leaders, all on top of unacceptable fleet and station conditions had left the rank and file of the fire department beaten and tired. Morale was fading fast. So, the passage of Prop B would not only be a remarkable legal victory for firefighters, but it would also be a momentous morale boost.  By almost 11 pm, the majority of votes had been counted and the outcome had become clear…So, would voters side with Turner and vote against Prop B for fear that it would bankrupt the city and comprise public safety, or were they certain that pay parity was within the city’s financial means and vote to give firefighters the raise they had gone without for the last eight years?  And, more than that, if Prop B did pass, would Turner honor the will of the voters and fully implement Prop B immediately or would he continue to fight it by taking legal action against it? And would he actually layoff hundreds of firefighter if it passed?And if it didn’t pass, what would Lancton and the Fire Union have prepared and how would that affect their strength in further negotiations as they continued to work without a contract?---Don't forget to leave us a rating and a review! After a devastating vote by City Council that approved the laying off and demoting of hundreds of firefighters to pay for Proposition B, there was still ongoing mediation to attend to. If a resolution wasn’t reached, Democratic Judge Tanya Garrison would then be the lone voice in deciding the validity of Prop B. The Fire Union’s options were dwindling as mediations seemed more superficial and obligatory than an opportunity to make a deal, especially given that layoffs and demotions were already approved. So the Fire Union’s hope then seemed to lie with Judge Garrison and the upcoming election season, as a new crop of Mayor hopefuls, sought to take down the incumbent. The Democrats are trying to impeach President Trump. Or maybe they’re not. This is not the portrait rank-and-file Democrats need for the six week-long August recess. That’s especially the case when polling consistently reveals impeachment to be a losing political proposition for Democrats. Liberal “safe” districts are all for trying to remove the President, but that is not the narrative Democrats in battleground districts are trying to promote. The second round of court-ordered mediation over Proposition B started Thursday. The Houston Professional Firefighters Association says mediation with the city of Houston will be moderated by Daryl Bristow – picked by Mayor Sylvester Turner, according to the union. Prop B requires equal pay for firefighters and police officers of similar rank. Voters passed it in November, and a court ruled it unconstitutional in May. At issue is 17-million-dollars that was paid to firefighters before Prop B was overturned. The founder of an organization that serves military veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder says that Google-owned YouTube barred him from running an advertisement that used "Christian" as a keyword but allowed him to run the same ad using "Muslim" as a keyword. Chad Robichaux’s tweet included a screengrab of a notification from YouTube alerting him that Christian is “unacceptable content as keyword.” YouTube responded in a tweet from its @TeamYouTubeAccount explaining that the platform does not allow advertisers to target users on the basis of their religion. “We ran the exact same ad with the keyword ‘Muslim’ & it was approved but ‘Christian’ was not,” he responded in another tweet. With two months still left in this fiscal year, the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) border sector has already set an all-time annual record for apprehensions at the border. According to a source in Border Patrol, this week, the total apprehensions in the RGV passed 301,000. That is an all-time record for this sector since Border Patrol began collecting records. The previous record was in 2014 during the first Central American migration, mainly of unaccompanied minors. The RGV sector’s border comprises 320 miles of river bends and labyrinths that are hard to patrol yet has the fewest miles of fencing of any busy border sector.

The City of San Diego appears to be going through a sort of retirement version of Brexit. Employees hired after the passage of Proposition B in 2012 have been receiving 401(k)-style defined contribution benefits rather than the pensions that earlier hires receive. But the California Supreme Court ruled the ballot measure illegal, and this week, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to get involved. That leaves the city and unions to reconcile a situation complicated by a 2009 agreement to reduce future benefits, meaning workers wouldn’t benefit from a reinstatement of pensions in any event. But the unions see value in guaranteed income, which is precisely the obligation the city wants to avoid.

The minimum wage increases are scheduled as follows: Alaska. The minimum wage in Alaska will increase from $9.84 per hour to $9.89 per hour on January 1, 2019. Alaska’s minimum wage is adjusted annually based on inflation. The change for 2019 reflects a 0.5% increase in the cost of living. Arizona. The minimum wage in Arizona is scheduled to increase to $11 per hour on January 1, 2019. Arkansas. The minimum wage in Arkansas increases to $9.25 per hour on January 1 per voter approval of Ballot Issue No. 5 in the November 6, 2018, General Election. California. The minimum wage in California is scheduled to increase on January 1 as follows: $12 per hour for large employers with 26 or more employees; $11 per hour for smaller employers with 25 or fewer employees. Colorado. The Colorado minimum wage is scheduled to increase to $11.10 per hour on January 1, as part of a scheduled increase. Delaware. The minimum wage increases to $8.75 per hour on January 1, as part of a scheduled increase. In addition, there will be a training wage for those over the age of 18 for the first 90 days of employment and a youth wage for those under the age of 18 at rates of not more than 50 cents less than the minimum wage. Florida. The minimum wage in Florida will increase from $8.21 per hour to $8.46 per hour on January 1. Florida’s minimum wage is adjusted annually based on inflation. The change for 2019 reflects a 2.59% increase in the cost of living (CPI South Region). Maine. The minimum wage in Maine is scheduled to increase from $10 per hour to $11 per hour on January 1. Massachusetts. The minimum wage in Massachusetts is scheduled to increase from $11 per hour to $12 per hour on January 1. Michigan. The minimum wage will increase to $9.45 in 2019, under the “Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act” (P.A. 337), as amended by Public Act 368 (S.B. 1171). Although S.B. 1171 has this increase scheduled for January 1, the effective date of the measures are on the 91st day after adjournment of the state legislature. This would possibly delay the increase until a tentative date of around March 21, 2019. Minnesota. The minimum wage in Minnesota will increase from $9.65 per hour to $9.86 per hour for employees of large employers with gross revenues of $500,000 or more. For employees of smaller employers, the minimum wage will increase from $7.87 per hour to $8.04 per hour. The Minnesota minimum wage is adjusted annually based on the rate of inflation. The change for 2019 reflects a 2.16% increase in the cost of living. However, a higher rate applies in the City of Minneapolis, where the minimum wage rate in is $11.25 per hour for employees of large employers with more than 100 employees and $10.25 per hour for employees of smaller employers with 100 or fewer employees, as of July 1. Missouri. The minimum wage in Missouri increases to $8.60 per hour on January 1, per voter approval of Proposition B in the November 6, 2018, General Election. All private businesses are required to pay, at minimum, the $8.60 hourly rate, except retail and service businesses whose annual gross sales are less than $500,000. Montana. The minimum wage will increase from $8.30 per hour to $8.50 per hour on January 1, 2019. New Jersey. The minimum wage in New Jersey will increase from $8.60 per hour to $8.85 per hour on January 1, 2019. The minimum wage in New Jersey is adjusted annually based on inflation. The change for 2019 reflects a 2.88% increase in the cost of living. New York. The minimum wage rates in New York are scheduled to increase on December 31, 2018, as follows: In New York City, $15 per hour for businesses with 11 or more employees and $13.50 per hour for businesses with 10 or fewer employees;...

The proponent of Prop B was Richard von Glahn, the organizing director of Missouri Jobs for Justice; the opponent was Ray McCarty, president and CEO of Associated Industries of Missouri.
