Hello to you listening around the world!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey with your host Diane Wyzga.About a block from my library or a block from the post office sits a house on a corner. Propped against this house I saw a very large sheet of plywood. Spray-painted in large black letters were these words: Kill Lawyers - Not Cops. Putting aside any 1st Amendment right of free speech arguments or the notion that many folks don't like lawyers until they need one, I have a question: When and how did we arrive at this place? When and how did we depart from human kindness, civility, and manners? I've often spoken to the man who lives in this house as I passed by on my walk, admired his sunflowers, commented on the weather. I plan to walk up to his door and say, “I am a lawyer. Are you going to kill me? Or do you wish someone would?” I want to hear how he arrived at his position. And then perhaps get him to put away his larger-than-life sign before some yahoo takes him up on the dare.Practical Tip: Be of speech a little more careful than anything else today, tomorrow, and forever. You're always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe and spread the word with a generous 5-star review and comment - it helps us all - and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out Services I Offer✓ Arrange your no-sales, Complimentary Coaching Consult ✓ Stay current with Diane on LinkedIn, as “Wyzga on Words” on Substack, and now Pandora RadioStories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. Sometimes the solution is simple—yet also the best, the most powerful, and the hardest. We tend to overcomplicate things, letting awkwardness or discomfort hold us back. But if you're wondering, “What should I do?” the simplest answer is prayer. It was Daniel's first move—and his most important one—because if life was too big for him, it wasn't too big for God. He prayed like everything depended on God showing up…because it did. (Talk by Joshua Ott)

Wall Street hit new record highs, led by the S&P 500, as mining stocks surged. However, U.S. consumer confidence dropped to its lowest in three years amid concerns about the labour market and broader economy. Meanwhile, China announced its largest stimulus since the pandemic, lifting oil prices by 2% and driving copper to a 10-week high. Locally, Aussie inflation is set to hit a 3 year low but don't expect a rate cut. Today, Bob comments on a few recent stories that have dominated the news cycle. From the Presidential Debate hosted by the journalistic frauds at ABC News, to willfully hiding the truth of the rapid decline of the entire Western World, the media and their globalist handlers continue their nefarious efforts to suppress truth and prop up the lies and liars. In this episode of the Human Action Podcast, Bob welcomes guest Joshua Mawhorter to discuss his recent article on the role of government in sustaining slavery. The conversation covers several key points, including slave patrols, fugitive slave laws, manumission restrictions, and constitutional subsidies. Mawhorter argues that slavery persisted largely due to government intervention rather than free-market mechanisms and highlights the inefficiencies and extensive costs associated with maintaining the institution. They also touch on modern discussions of reparations and the historical patterns of slavery's abolition in other countries.Josh's Mises Wire Article, "Governments Had a Major Role in Sustaining Slavery": Mises.org/HAP465aMark Thornton, "Slavery, Profitability, and the Market Process": Mises.org/HAP465bJeffrey Hummel, "The Political Economy of Slavery, Secession, and Emancipation": Mises.org/HAP465cJeffrey Hummel, "U.S. Slavery and Economic Thought": Mises.org/HAP465dAlan Olmstead, "Cotton, Slavery, and the New History of Capitalism": Mises.org/HAP465eRegistration for the 2024 Mises Institute Supporters Summit is open for Mises Members: Mises.org/SS24

Blood Water by J.A. Bryson The blood on Zip's hands is dried the color of rust and sticks like clay under her fingernails. Mostly, it isn't hers. Mostly, it belongs to the man she shivved, the one who mistook her for an easy mark. Zip is gray-eyed and hunger-slight. She's a lot of things – fast, fierce, speechless since birth – but she isn't easy. The old timers know this. The man waiting at the pits to grab her while she took a piss, he did not know this. He's a newcomer. His people came when jets rained fire on their homeland. They have no code. They left their children and their old timers to burn. Their language is violence. One needn't words to speak it. Outside camp, Zip finds shade in a stand of scraggly pines with peeling bark and sun-bleached needles. She drags her palms over the parched earth. The blood remains. It doesn't flake or rub away. She thinks to spit on it, to make a paste, to paint its warning on her sunken cheeks, but her tongue is swollen with thirst. She hasn't spit to spare. If it doesn't rain soon, her band will strike up camp. Better to move than to choke on dust – to become dust. She closes her eyes and swallows. Her heart beats too fast. The man she shivved will die. Serves him right for making her sweat. Propped against a tree, Zip drifts. She doesn't hear Cat come. She wakes to his rough tongue grazing her knuckles. Groggily, she peeps an eye. The sun is not where she remembers it. Read the rest on Patreon. Visit us at https://escapeartists.net/catscast/. The Philippines is one of the deadliest countries in the world for environmental defenders, with 30 environmentalists murdered there in 2018. Former Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte notoriously called land and environmental activists communist sympathizers and terrorists in an effort to silence them. In August, 2019, human rights activist and land defender Brandon Lee was the target of an assassination attempt by the Duterte government. He'd been living in the Cordillera region on the island of Luzon working with the Igorot people defending their land. The assassination attempt left him a quadriplegic. In the latest episode, we talk with Brandon about state violence in the Philippines under the governments of Duterte and Marcos Jr. against social movements and communities. We also talk about how the U.S. props up these repressive regimes. And how the recent APEC meeting in San Francisco was an attempt by Philippine government to recast Marcos Jr. as a moderate and climate conscious leader. bio// Brandon Lee is an environmentalist and Indigenous rights activist based in San Francisco. In democracies, citizens must accept loss; we can't always be on the winning side. But in the United States, the fundamental civic capacity of being able to lose is not distributed equally. Propped up by white supremacy, whites (as a group) are accustomed to winning; they have generally been able to exercise political rule without having to accept sharing it. Black citizens, on the other hand, are expected to be political heroes whose civic suffering enables progress toward racial justice. In Black Grief/White Grievance: The Politics of Loss (Princeton UP, 2023), Juliet Hooker, a leading thinker on democracy and race, argues that the two most important forces driving racial politics in the United States today are Black grief and white grievance. Black grief is exemplified by current protests against police violence--the latest in a tradition of violent death and subsequent public mourning spurring Black political mobilization. The potent politics of white grievance, meanwhile, which is also not new, imagines the United States as a white country under siege. Drawing on African American political thought, Hooker examines key moments in US racial politics that illuminate the problem of loss in democracy. She connects today's Black Lives Matter protests to the use of lynching photographs to arouse public outrage over post-Reconstruction era racial terror, and she discusses Emmett Till's funeral as a catalyst for the civil rights struggles of the 1950s and 1960s. She also traces the political weaponization of white victimhood during the Obama and Trump presidencies. Calling for an expansion of Black and white political imaginations, Hooker argues that both must learn to sit with loss, for different reasons and to different ends. Learn more about your ad choices. Widespread corruption in Lebanon is fostered by the country's ruling class, whose business interests are enmeshed with those of international finance. Nadim Houry, executive director of the Arab Reform Initiative, explains how Lebanon's culture of political impunity is tied to the reconstruction agreements put in place in 1990, at the end of the 15-year civil war. The ongoing political deadlock shields the authorities from scrutiny and allows for vulture capitalists such as the former governor of Lebanon's Central Bank, Riad Salameh, to embezzle the country's resources. At the same time, ordinary people are faced with crushing inflation.

The Denver Post published a blockbuster three-part investigation last week, unveiling the spokes of an international criminal conspiracy with Denver as a key hub — the Denver Art Museum, in fact. Their fifth floor Bunker Gallery is so-named for Emma C. Bunker, “The Scholar,” as she was known in court papers connected to the scheme. From her Denver home, she validated and elevated the false claims of Douglas Latchford, an art dealer and collector who trafficked in priceless relics looted from southeast Asia. Producer Paul Karolyi talks to reporter Sam Tabachnik, who investigated the story for more than a year, including on the ground in Cambodia and Thailand. Paul mentioned the new venue for Frozen Dead Guy Days and Denver's laudatory efforts to replace lead water pipes. We had the pleasure of interviewing Thornhill over Zoom video.Propped up against their acclaimed 2019 debut album The Dark Pool, there's a profound new sense of clarity, vision and intention to be heard on Heroine. Where The Dark Pool touched fans with its mix of crushing riffage and atmospheric metalcore, this record finds Thornhill flexing their skills in the alternative and rock worlds, referencing a tapestry of sounds from the likes of Smashing Pumpkins and Red Hot Chili Peppers to Silverchair and Deftones. At the same time harking to flavours of modern metalcore, Thornhill ultimately want to showcase what can be made of heavy and rock music when there are no borders. Heroine does just this, and comes complete with elevated visuals and theatrics to match.Vocalist Jacob Charlton, who is also responsible for the band's styling and music video writing and direction, shares that part of his growth during the album's creation was finally nailing his own character and style as a vocalist and frontman, much like his performance idols such as Elvis, Justin Timberlake, and Gwen Stefani pioneered in their own ways.Awarded a laundry list of accolades including triple j's Feature Album and additions to some Best of The Year lists with its 2019 release, The Dark Pool also garnered nominations including Best International Breakthrough Artist at the 2020 Heavy Music Awards, and Best Independent Heavy Album/EP at the 2020 AIR Awards. The album has amassed over 32 million streams and 3 million YouTube views on its music video. We want to hear from you! A shocking admission from Texas officials as we now know the teacher who propped open the door before the Uvalde school massacre closed that door before the gunman entered which directly contradicts what police told the public days ago. Also, millions are able to move freely in Shanghai after two months of brutal lockdowns. But, will the newfound freedoms last?
