This week, it's a girl's takeover of the pod! We talk about the importance of making time for hobbies and how much of a struggle it is to take that time. We talk about a festival in Colorado called "Frozen Dead Guy Days" – featuring coffin races and a hearse parade. And lastly, we talk about the trend of young women leaving the church and how we can fix that. We should be living in the golden age of hobbies. It's Friday and we're talking about the biggest stories of the week. First, Rep. Ken Buck announced this week that he's leaving Congress even earlier than expected, throwing another wrench in an already chaotic race to represent Colorado's Congressional District 4. So host Bree Davies, producer Paul Karolyi, and politics and green chile correspondent Justine Sandoval are talking through the implications of what CD4 candidate (and Buck's fellow representative) Lauren Boebert called a “swampy backroom deal.” Plus, four Denver-area grocery stores ranked among the worst in the country, and our wins and fails of the week.  Paul mentioned the city's new plan for the Cherry Creek Trail and construction on Peña Boulevard. Justine talked about Frozen Dead Guy Days and the latest push for funeral home regulation (Here's a link to our recent, eye-opening ep on the topic). Bree talked about the micro-community in Overland.  What do you think about Boebert's chances in CD4? We want to hear from you! The Denver Post published a blockbuster three-part investigation last week, unveiling the spokes of an international criminal conspiracy with Denver as a key hub — the Denver Art Museum, in fact. Their fifth floor Bunker Gallery is so-named for Emma C. Bunker, “The Scholar,” as she was known in court papers connected to the scheme. From her Denver home, she validated and elevated the false claims of Douglas Latchford, an art dealer and collector who trafficked in priceless relics looted from southeast Asia. Producer Paul Karolyi talks to reporter Sam Tabachnik, who investigated the story for more than a year, including on the ground in Cambodia and Thailand.  Paul mentioned the new venue for Frozen Dead Guy Days and Denver's laudatory efforts to replace lead water pipes.  For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter Hey Denver by texting “Denver” to 66866 Follow us on Twitter: @citycastdenver Leave us a voicemail with your name and neighborhood, and you might hear it on the show: (720) 500-5418‬ Looking to advertise on City Cast Denver? In Colorado, lawmakers and politicians have been creating targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions for several years now. Then it's up to rule making agencies to figure out how to implement those standards. The Sun's Michael Booth reports that in one recent instance, those rules have been put off for a year, even as worldwide concerns about climate change have become more dire. And while public officials claim the delay will enable them to implement even more stringent measures, environmentalists worry that waiting could be costly. Good Morning, Colorado, and welcome to the Daily Sun-Up with The Colorado Sun. It’s Tuesday March 9th, and we’re feeling lucky to start the day with you. Join us daily for an in-depth look at one of our top stories.    Today - Colorado’s Coronavirus case rates, death rates, testing, and vaccinations compared to the rest of the country. Also, what to expect in the upcoming months.   Before we begin, let’s take a look at what happened on this day in Colorado history - adapted from Derek R Everett’s book “Colorado Day by Day”:   Today, we take you back to March 9th, 2002 when the first Frozen Dead Guy Days festival took place high in the mountains of Boulder County. The festival began after the city of Boulder found itself in possession of the frozen remains of a Norwegian civil servant named Bredo Morstol. The festival has since been voted one of the top cultural festivals in the country.   Now, our feature story.   For the first year of the coronavirus pandemic, states have largely made decisions independent of one another, and Colorado has seen its own successes and struggles. Health reporter John Ingold talks with Lucy Haggard about how Colorado has compared to its peers and what may be in store for the next few months.   To read more about the coronavirus pandemic, go to coloradosun.com.   Thanks for listening. Before we go here are a few stories you should know about today:   Fully vaccinated people can gather freely with each other without masks or social distancing, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC announced new guidance Monday as a growing number of vaccinated Americans wonder when they can resume socializing. The CDC also said that those who are vaccinated can visit freely with low-risk individuals, even if they are not also vaccinated. https://coloradosun.com/2021/03/08/coronavirus-vaccine-guidance-cdc-colorado/    A shooting at Denver’s Civic Center Park Monday afternoon sent one man to the hospital and briefly locked down the state capitol. Legislators continued to discuss a bill that would mandate the safe storage of firearms through the lockdown, though House Speaker Daneya Esgar asked colleagues to stay away from the windows.  https://coloradosun.com/2021/03/08/denver-civic-center-park-shooting-colorado-capitol/    National snowmobile sales are almost 20% higher this winter than last season. But Colorado’s below-average snow year has translated to a paltry 2% increase, similar to other low snow seasons. While early season snows led to waves of recreators in the fall, and spring storms are bringing renewed options across the high country, industry experts say Coloradans have often traveled out of the state to find fresh powder.   For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com. Michelle chats with Liz Carey, podcaster and freelance writer for Daily Yonder; Amanda MacDonald, festival co-ordinator for Frozen Dead Guys Days in Nederland, CO; and Kristopher Larsen, mayor of Nederland. Frozen Dead Guy Days started with a celebration of the cryogenic disposition of a local citizen and the running of hearse races almost two decades ago. It has now expanded to a wide assortment of exciting events, including a frozen T-shirt contest, and an attendance of between 20,000 and 25,000 for the weekend, according to MacDonald. The event is really at capacity at this point, notes MacDonald, who purchased the event from the local chamber of commerce. There are plusses and minuses of this event and other similar events, such as Synchronis Butterflies Day, according to Carey, who has written an outstanding piece on rural tourism for Daily Yonder. There is a definite economic boom for the town, which charges the festival for additional police and support and derives a benefit in terms of tourists spending money during the weekend and who also visit the town at other times because, well, it is the home of Frozen Dead Guy Days. But the festival is also taxing for the local police department and presents logistical concerns for both attendees and local residents, including backups on the highways.  Carey notes that the festival is extremely well organized, with specific instructions on how to best enjoy the festival.  Larsen notes that the event takes almost a year to plan, with challenges for the town of only 1,500 people, and includes outreach to citizens and local and state police and the fire and sheriff’s departments to ensure the safety and enjoyment of visitors. The event, which takes place in the second week of March, does offer opportunities for local businesses, explains Larsen. According to an informal survey he has taken, there is a doubling or tripling of their business during Frozen Dead Guy Days, compared to an immediate prior or post-event weekend. Finally, he notes, the event has produced a definite international notoriety, including from, you guessed it, the Netherlands. Hello babies! Maybe this is actually our five year anniversary show? I’m a little confused. Anyways, Emily celebrated a different anniversary recently by staying at the Disneyland hotel and accomplishing the impossible: eating the correct amount of edibles. Lisa recently watched The Craft (1996) and got nightmares. On Wiki of the Week, we read the Wikipedia page for "Frozen Dead Guy Days," an annual celebration held in the town of Nederland, Colorado, to loosely celebrate the 1994 discovery of the cryonic statecorpse of Bredo Morstoel. We welcome Lindy West, who has the very continental Gilbert's Syndrome. On Expert Hour, we are joined by Hollywood's #1 party boy Chud Cubner.  Emily Heller Lisa Hanawalt Lindy West Nate Fernald

www.TonyTrombo.com My guest is Amanda MacDonald with the FROZEN DEAD GUY DAYS festival in Colorado! Frozen Dead Guy Days (started 2002) is an annual celebration held in the town of Nederland, Colorado, to loosely celebrate, through a theme of frozen/ice/blue/winter, the 1994 discovery of the cryonic state corpse of Bredo Morstel. Frozen Dead Guy Days is celebrated from Friday through Sunday on the first full weekend of March. Coffin races, a slow-motion parade, and "Frozen Dead Guy" lookalike contests are held. A documentary on "Grandpa Bredo", called Grandpa's in the Tuff Shed, is shown. A newer version of the film, Grandpa's Still in the Tuff Shed, was premiered in Nederland on March 7, 2003. Other events include a tour of the Tuff Shed where Grandpa is still frozen; a "polar plunge" for those brave enough to go swimming in Colorado in early March (which generally requires breaking through the ice); a dance, called "Grandpa's Blue Ball"; pancake breakfasts; a market showcasing local artists; snowshoe races, and snow sculpture contests. Glacier Ice Cream, headquartered in the nearby city of Boulder, makes a flavor specifically for the festival (named, appropriately enough, Frozen Dead Guy), consisting of fruit-flavored blue ice cream mixed with crushed Oreo cookies and sour gummy worms. Tours of the Tuff Shed where Grandpa is still frozen were suspended after 2005, after Grandpa's family "became frustrated with Frozen Dead Guy Days", but they resumed with the 2010 celebration. Although Trygve and Aud filed a complaint against Nederland involving money and naming rights in 2005, Frozen Dead Guy Days is still alive; the most recent celebration was held March 7–9, 2014 and the next is scheduled for March 6th-8th 2015.
