In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with the remarkably versatile vocalist and musician David Blamires for a thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation about his global musical journey, his time with the Pat Metheny Group, and his solo career.Born in the UK and raised in Canada, David's voice has left its mark across genres. He's perhaps best known for his work with the Pat Metheny Group, where his signature harmonies and unmistakable tone helped shape the sound of albums like Still Life (Talking) and We Live Here. But his career spans far beyond that, including an extensive resume as a session singer, live performer, and solo artist.Whether you're curious about the world of studio vocals, the dynamics of life on the road, or the creative spark that brings voices together in harmony, this episode offers a fascinating glimpse into the art and craft of a world-class musician.Music from the Episode:Minuano (Six-Eight) (Pat Metheny Group)Last Train Home (Pat Metheny Group)Across the Sky (Pat Metheny Group)Follow Me (Pat Metheny Group)Something to Remind You (Pat Metheny Group)Deep is the Midnight Sea (David Blamires Group)This Time (David Blamires)With Every Passing Day (David Blamires)Learn more about David and his work at davidblamires.com.Thank you for listening! This week, I have a playlist for you that stretches across continents and moods, a rich tapestry of sound that celebrates both discovery and the familiar warmth of timeless artistry. I open with a gem from Russia — "Case" by the Ilugdin Trio, a striking piece that caught me completely off guard in the best way. Dmitry Ilugdin and his trio lay down something deeply melodic, harmonically rich, and full of understated elegance. A real find. Next, I tip my hat to one of my all-time favourite voices in jazz, the ever-cool Patricia Barber. Her track "This Town" is a reminder of why she remains a singular force — cerebral, sultry, and effortlessly hip. Further into the mix, you'll find some fresh and fiery ensemble work from Clélya Abraham and company, the hypnotic grooves of Sean Khan with jazz legend Peter King and the luminous Heidi Vogel, and a cinematic journey courtesy of the Espen Berg Trio, joined by the haunting trumpet of Mathias Eick on "Vintermørke." And then there's "Eberhard" — a poignant, sprawling tribute by the late, great Lyle Mays. For those who, like me, hold the Pat Metheny Group close to the heart, this is a moving reminder of Lyle's genius. His musical voice was — and remains — one of the most emotionally intelligent in modern jazz. I close with some adventurous sounds: the genre-bending "El Momento" by Sly5thAve & Roberto Verastegui, the dreamy textures of Rahill's "Futbol," and an experimental nugget from Drift Lab that plays like a sonic science project in the best sense. This playlist is full of surprises, beauty, groove, and soul — the kind of mix that makes you feel like the world's a little more connected through sound. So wherever you're tuning in — just press play and let the music take you. Thanks for listening. Aí encomendei Kind of Blue de Miles Davis e Miles & Quincy Live at Montreux. O conceito era reinventar covers como ‘Ramble On', ‘Pride in the Name of Love' e ‘Sad Lisa'.

Colorado-bred, LA-based keyboardist Lao Tizer embodies what it means to be a 21st-century musician inhabiting the jazz sphere ¾ that being one who embraces musical diversity and has no fear of crossing boundaries. But Tizer also happens to come by this naturally. As the self-described “child of East Coast Jewish hippies,” he was exposed to and was influenced by his parents' extensive musical tastes from a young age: “My dad had a huge music collection. He loved classical music and had all this world music ¾ Ravi Shankar, R. Carlos Nakai, music of the Sufis ¾ plus my parents were boomers, so that brought in all the Buddy Holly, Sam Cooke, Elvis, Janis Joplin, and Motown. The Temptations were my favorite band as a kid. So, I basically grew up with everything but jazz, which I didn't really discover until I was about 16.” It was a couple of seemingly random selections from the Columbia House mail-order club that turned him toward a new and lasting musical direction. ”It was buy one, get twelve free, right? So I ordered Miles Davis's Kind of Blue and Miles & Quincy Live at Montreux. Then one Sunday morning, it all just kind of hit me. To a lot of people trained in the classical tradition, jazz sounds like it breaks all kinds of rules, but I just heard there was a whole other world to explore there.” From there, Tizer hit the ground running, applying his classical piano skills to jazz and releasing his first self-produced solo keyboard albums while still in high school. After graduating from Boulder High, Tizer moved to LA and studied with legendary piano guru Terry Trotter for about two years, forgoing formal music education. “Instead of going to music school, I just got my butt kicked on the bandstand. I was always working with musicians who were older and more experienced. School's great but there's no better way to grow than playing with people who are going to push you to grow. I was so green, man. Learning to play in a band concept ¾ playing in good time with a rhythm section–was one of the most challenging things, coming from being a solo pianist.” But his approach and talents served him well. At 19, he formed and led the first band under his own name, taking indirect inspiration from another iconic jazz entity. “When I got into listening to The Pat Metheny Group in the late ‘90s, they had that “formula” that definitely spoke to me ¾ great, through-composed music with a lot of room for improvisation. That's the formula that I love” In the ensuing years and through various incarnations, The Lao Tizer Band has flown by that directional compass while infusing the bespoke influences and experiences that inform Tizer's musical worldview. Subsequently, the band attracted many top players to its ranks ¾ GRAMMY-winning saxophonist Eric Marienthal (Chick Corea), Emmy-winning guitarist Chieli Minucci (Special EFX), Senegalese bassist Cheikh N'Doye (Baaba Maal), violinist extraordinaire Karen Briggs (Stanley Clarke), GRAMMY-winning drum phenom Gene Coye (Hiromi) and legendary GRAMMY-winning percussionist Munyungo Jackson (Stevie Wonder) ¾ and became a steady presence at LA hotspots like The Baked Potato as well as entertaining audiences at premier jazz festivals around the world. Milestones among these were The Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival, Cape Town Jazz Festival, Java Jazz Festival, and Atlanta Jazz Festival. The six albums he has released as a leader have seen Tizer steadily grow while constantly defining (and redefining) who he is as a keyboardist, composer, and bandleader. “I think the most important thing as an artist and composer is to have your own identity and your own sound. Everybody comes to where they are in music through whatever path they have followed and I think staying true to what brought you to where you are now helps to create your own true voice. I think I have always had that.” But not content to rest, Tizer recently decided to take another bold turn with his music. In 2018, The Lao Tizer Band released Songs From The Swinghouse, a project that included fresh, sophisticated takes on a number of vocal-oriented covers from seminal artists such as U2, Led Zeppelin, and Cat Stevens along with a collection of seven original instrumentals penned by Tizer. The album was released to critical acclaim and notched the Top 10 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz album chart. “We were always only instrumental until that record. The concept was to reinvent covers like ‘Ramble On,' ‘Pride in the Name of Love,' and ‘Sad Lisa.' I had never arranged or recorded any vocal material with my group before, so to take those tunes and make them our own was really fun.” Now, with his forthcoming album, Amplify, Tizer ups the ante by bringing original vocal-oriented songs into his mix of smart instrumentals ¾ as well as a few potent new additions to the band. “A big part of the concept for Amplify is to cross over. It's not really a “jazz” record but it definitely has jazz elements, no question. The band still features the core lineup we've had for a while now with Eric, Chieli, Karen, Munyungo, Gene, and Cheikh, but now there are a few new faces involved in the group. Namely saxophone and flute wunderkind Danny Janklow (MONKestra) and Rolling Stone 2022 ”Bassist of the Year” nominee Anthony Crawford (Erykah Badu), who shares low-end duties with Cheikh. We augmented our already large band with a horn section and background singers on a few songs as well. The album is nine songs ¾ five vocal, four instrumental ¾ all original, no covers.” But perhaps Tizer's most intriguing choice of secret weapon for Amplify is bringing American Idol star Elliott Yamin to handle the vocal material. “Elliott's first album had that platinum hit single “Wait For You.” He's very much a throwback to a blue-eyed soul kind of vibe and it was amazing to be able to bring him into the band. This project was a little outside his stylistic wheelhouse because it is a bit more adventurous harmonically. I think he was a little intimidated by the music early on but he's such a remarkably gifted singer and he's just singing his butt off. He's turned out to be unbelievable in this project and the band. He's super gung-ho about it too, which is great. I couldn't have asked for a better fit!” With these continuing steps over boundaries into new stylistic territory, one might wonder if Tizer has any trepidation about alienating the core base of jazz listeners he's built up over time. Quite the contrary, it seems. “I love that longstanding boundaries in music are getting broken down. Artists like Snarky Puppy, Robert Glasper, and Kamasi Washington have proven this theory that I've long held: If you have music that's melodic and grooves, you can win over a very broad array of listeners.” Indeed, Tizer testifies to having seen the evidence firsthand. “There's been a really cool renaissance and rebirth with all these genre-defying artists and I've seen a shift in the crowd at our shows too. There's a lot of 20 and 30-somethings coming out, and that's so cool. That's what the future audience is going to be. If we want to have long careers like our predecessors, we need to have our peers and younger listeners connect to this music and follow it.” With eyes set on the future and a willingness to keep exploring, Tizer's simplest ethos perhaps sums it up best: “I say forget the boundaries. Just make good music and try to connect with as many listeners as you can.

Fictionary (extracto) 2. Eberhard (póstuma) *Suscríbete a nuestro canal. This episode is the WORLD PREMIERE of “Lou's Blues”, my new single. As I've mentioned several times on the podcast, I came of age musically during the British Invasion era of the 1960s, and then I segued into the Jazz Fusion era of the 1970s. That era was dominated by incredible bands like Weather Report, Return To Forever and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. My band, Sagov, was a part of that scene. What I loved about jazz fusion era was how it combined the power of rock with the sophistication and improvisation of jazz. “Lou's Blues” is inspired by that era. I call it a tone poem. It's a musical journey. I wrote it in the recording studio and we did it in one take.Mark Egan, acclaimed bassist with the Pat Metheny Group, Elements and Gil Evans, calls the track “Fantastic! Great playing and production!” Peter Erskine, Superstar drummer with Weather Report, says “Digging It!”The track features my band, Project Grand Slam, consisting of Tristan Clark on guitar, Baden Goyo on keyboards, Joel E. Mateo on drums, Guillermo Barron on percussion, and me on bass. The producer is Tony Carey, singer-songwriter and keyboard genius.“Lou's Blues” is available for streaming on all the streaming platforms. He has worked as a soloist, in duets and small jazz ensembles, and, for decades, with the Pat Metheny Group. His musical styles include Jazz Fusion, Jazz (both progressive and contemporary jazz) …..and also Latin Jazz. He was born in Lee's Summit, Missouri in 1954. Lee's Summit is a suburb on the southeast side of Kansas City. His main influences have been other musicians, his musical family and the British Invasion. Musicians influencing Metheny include trumpeter Miles Davis, Gary Burton on vibes, jazz guitarists Jim Hall and Wes Montgomery and Jazz Sax players John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman. PAUSE A major foundational influence for Metheny is his musical family. His father played trumpet, his brother Mike Metheny plays jazz trumpet, and Pat's maternal grandfather was a professional trumpeter. Brother Mike taught Pat how to play the trumpet, and so trumpet is actually Pat Metheny's first Musicians in the family. Metheny attributes his early success to the local musical environment he was brought up in – the years 1964-1972, in Kansas City. Much of this is described in his biography titled BENEATH MISSOURI SKIES. Seems like Metheny is destined to become a great trumpeter, with all that musical environment…. PAUSE .. there was a bump in the road at age 10. The BRITISH INVASION was in full force. Metheny saw the Beatles perform on TV in 1964, probably the Ed Sullivan Show, because that year the Beatles appeared. The Beatles are what inspired Metheny to defect from Trumpet to Guitar. Metheny persuaded his father to buy him a guitar for his 12th birthday. That first guitar was a Gibson ES-140. PAUSE That's a hollow-body guitar, built in ¾ scale for young players and small hands. It's a scale model of the Gibson ES-175 hollow body. Metheny soon got bigger hands and acquired a Gibson ES-175 …and that guitar is featured on his early albums like those in this podcast episode… Metheny started playing in pizza parlors at age fourteen (that's 1968). At age 15, Metheny won a scholarship from Down Beat Magazine to attend a jazz camp (1969). That camp led to a meeting with Jazz guitarist Jim Hall, and bassist Ron Carter. So, by the time he graduated from high school (1972) he was the first-call guitarist for Kansas City jazz clubs, private clubs, and jazz festivals. Metheny had A LOT of support from his musical environment. Even though he switched from trumpet to guitar. Metheny briefly attended college at U of Miami in Florida, but quickly realized after practicing on guitar for years all day long… he was unprepared for a college program … He realized then he was first and foremost, a serious guitarist and composer. Metheny moved to Boston to teach at Berklee College of Music at the age of 19, where he met Jazz Vibraphonist Gary Burton. Teaching Jazz Theory and Performance was in demand. BIT BUCKET and for those not familiar, the ES-175 is sought-after by jazz country and rock guitarists - - - these vintage guitars today sell for $3,000 to $25,000. Back in the day, made in Kalamazoo MI. How about that for your first guitar? I am jealous, my first guitar was a Kay (named after John Kay) and it was … a very basic and cheap and crude electric starter guitar. Metheny, on the other hand, got a wonderful instrument, because

Mark Egan is one of the world's finest bassists. Starting his career with the first PAT METHENY GROUP, he has worked with Gil Evans, John McLaughlin, Cyndi Lauper, Stan Getz, Michael Franks, Roger Daltrey, Sting and Duran Duran off-shoot group ARCADIA. His partnership with drummer Danny Gottlieb has led to many albums of their group ELEMENTS and their new duo album “Electric Blue”. Mark takes us inside his inspiration, how he created his sound, and his work ethic. He also tells us his WORST GIGS and gives valuable advice for musicians. Mark and I have worked together on many projects and as A SPECIAL BONUS , here's a track from one of my solo albums “The Seduction of Art” with Mark, Danny Gottlieb and the mind-blowing CHRIS HUNTER on Alto Saxophone. Thanks to all my Radio Richard listeners and today I have a special treat for you, my 2010 interview with Gary Sinise. star of stage and screen, well-loved for his many film roles such as Apollo 13, Forest Gump, and of course as the rugged Detective Mac Taylor in CSI: New York!!!” It's easy to put people in convenient little boxes, but some people have more than one talent. Not only is Gary Sinise a superb actor and an actual movie star, he's a rockin', funky-butt bass player!! For this interview , I drove out to 29 Palms Marine Base in the middle of the Mojave desert. he not only talks about his acting but also shows why music is so important to him. After 9/11 he felt compelled to do something to help the soldiers risking their lives all over the globe. He formed The Lieutenant DAN BAND, a big 16-piece showband that travels all over the world bringing entertainment and a taste of home to American soldiers. On the very windy airfield in the dry but nevertheless picturesque area beloved by lizards and cacti, I asked Gary how he got his start in music. The Lt. Dan Band is of course named after the wounded soldier Gary plays in the movie Forest Gump. The band features some great musicians including acclaimed drummer Danny Gottlieb who's played not only with Pat Metheny Group, but with John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock and The Blues Brothers Band! I asked my old buddy Danny Gottlieb about working with Gary on this project. You cannot get this content ANYWHERE else. SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel and don't miss one episode. I first met Lyle when he joined the Pat Metheny Group and had the pleasure of working with him on the American Garage album in 1979. I remember being in the studio recording a tune called “The Search” and I suggested that the guitar melody, played on a 12-string might sound great in 3-part harmony. Pat and I discussed it for a couple of minutes and by the time Pat said, “OK, let's try it”, Lyle had written the arrangement on a pad of paper. Whenever there was a problem in the studio, he would immediately go out to the dining area where he had a travel chess set. Lyle had both a breathtaking musical talent and a wry sense of humor (as you'll hear at the end of this interview!) I feel very fortunate to have known him. Jake is clearly in high spirits, as last week brought great news. With the bad president leaving and not as bad president arriving (not to mention his upgraded recording space), Jake is pretty happy.Music recommendations are “Still Life (Talking)” by Pat Metheny Group, and “Fear of Death” by Tim Heidecker.Wake & Jake (Bonus Content)https://www.patreon.com/wakeandjakepodWake & Jakehttps://www.auxchicago.com/wake-jakehttps://www.instagram.com/wakeandjakepod/https://twitter.com/WakeandJakePodJake Fisherhttps://www.instagram.com/kennyg.g.allin/https://deathbotrecords.bandcamp.com/Music Composed by Jake FisherLogo by Baitul Javid
