Welcome to another episode of the Soul Surgery podcast and our Surrender series where I dive deeply into my guests' greatest points of surrender. This week I am joined by the incredible Richie Bostock. Richie is a breathwork coach, author and speaker. He was introduced to breathwork when his father was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and after seeing the incredible effects it had he was hooked. It is now his mission to spread the lifechanging possibilities of breathwork to the world. In this episode Richie shares how a corporate career that gave him all the things he thought would make him happy actually left him feeling empty and lacking in purpose. He realised that he had been living his life based on an unconscious pressure for him to have a certain identity that would make those around him feel comfortable and in control. When Richie began to ask himself the big questions of who am I and why am I here? He found that the biggest discoveries came when he allowed himself to let go of knowing and questioning. Instead, he allowed himself to be surprised by what came up and to trust. Make sure to share your biggest takeaways and aha moments in the comments. Episode Highlights: By not letting our fears and doubts take us over, we create space for something else to emerge. Something we may not have even realised was possible. When we can surrender who we think we are or who we think we should be we open up the opportunity to find out who we really are away from our conditioning and stories. Letting go of the “me” we think we are changes how life appears to us and how we can respond to everything. In the shedding of who you thought you were there is a birthing of something new, all you need to do is listen. When we release our attachment to how we think things should be we allow life to flow and we can truly experience the present moment. If you too feel ready to re-create your relationships or your life by breaking free of old patterns on a holistic level, across mind, body and soul, I invite you to order my book SURRENDER. SURRENDER will walk you through a life changing process of maturation. Of breaking free of the vicious cycle of repeated stuck patterns, stories and belief systems, trauma and ancestral wounds. It's more than just a book. It's a guide through a deep healing journey of SURRENDERING of who you are NOT so that you can unfurl into who you were BORN TO BE. Order SURRENDER here: Connect with Nicky: Instagram Facebook Website

Richie Bostock is breathwork coach, author and speaker who joins me on the podcast to share the life-changing benefits of breathwork he has experienced first-hand and also seen in the tens of thousands of people he has ‘breathed'. Richie's own journey starts in corporate management and digital entrepreneurship, two very high-stress environments where exhibiting stress is a sign to the people around you that you're taking your job seriously. But it was his father's MS diagnosis that made Richie go on a journey of discovery to help his dad, via training with the Ice Man himself, Wim Hof, that triggered a profound change in Richie too.If you're reading this then, well, sorry to state the obvious, but you're breathing, but what more science and research shows us is that we may not be breathing correctly. Meaning, our breathing might actually be working against our physical, mental and emotional health. Richie discovered how to breathe for maximum benefit in all these areas, which is why he is so committed to sharing his message as far and as wide as possible. In this conversation, @thebreathguy and I discuss:How breath is free medicine; it's just a case of knowing how to use it.How the benefits of breath have been known for centuries but modern science is proven, unequivocally, the real impact it can have. What he learned from the Ice Man himself @iceman_hofHow he ‘ripped the band-aid off' his own life and made huge changes. How breathing affected his own tendency towards OCD.Why we should ‘hold all perspectives lightly'.Why modern living seems to be forcing us to choose between ‘certain unhappiness' and ‘uncertain happiness'.How trying to be someone you aren't can lead to disconnection and depression. Why breath is the Swiss Army knife of the body. How finding your breath and creating a space to be still can be where you tap into your intuition, and so much more…Download Richie's app Flourish.Richie's book Exhale is available now.To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram. Richie Bostock has popped in and out of my world for a little over a year now. My friends over at Fierce Calm @fiercecalm mentioned that we HAD to sync up and I am so happy we did. As one does, we got him to come on the podcast to chat with us about his wellness path. He brings breath work practice into the day to day similarly to how I bring yoga into the day to day. It's always interesting for me to hear what tools have been successful in helping others to achieve balance, grounding, and self-care. Yoga has many ways of doing this, but Richie has taken what he's learned and gave this practice an approach of his own. I got to experience it myself firsthand, and it's pretty freaking amazing! This week, I'm really excited to be speaking with Richie Bostock. Richie is a breathwork coach, author and speaker, and he's made it his mission to spread the life-changing possibilities of breathwork. Richie's book, Exhale, is fantastic and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about using your breath for healing. No-one ever really teaches us ‘how' to breathe and so many of us are actually breathing in ways that aren't serving us. In the episode, we explore how we can change the way that we feel through the way that we breathe. Richie also shares some simple breathing techniques that you can use throughout your day to help shift your energy and feel better. We also talk about how breath can be used for healing and why sometimes it can be more effective to start with bodywork practices, such as breathwork, than with traditional talking therapy. I am absolutely fascinated by breathwork and I loved this conversation with Richie, I think you'll find it really practical and helpful. For the full show notes, please head over to motherkind.co.

Each lever of the breath is so delicate it can completely transform an experience. Everyone’s relationship with their breath is very personal and very different. To down-regulate your nervous system you can use a slower form of breathing. Learn to become more delicate and ration your breath when using a slower breath-form. When you inhale or exhale as much as you can you are introducing tension because you are working at the extremes. A healthy breath range is usually around 9 to 12 breaths per minute but most people will be in a range of around 12 to 16 breaths per minute. Breathing is a behaviour and understanding the emotional aspect will make the biggest difference. When you are stressed you incorporate secondary breathing muscles to support the potential of the fight or flight mode. The way that you breathe reflects how you are feeling. Breathwork is energy work and does affect the energy systems. Richie Bostock (The Breath Guy) is a man on a mission. He wants to change the way we think about the breath. And he might just do it. On his way to becoming The Breath Guy, Richie survives an early brush with depression, embarks on a breathwork odyssey across 5 continents, treks with The Ice Man, and journeys inwards towards wholeness. With him we explore the mind-blowing science of breathwork, rewiring the nervous system, hacking into the immune system, and opening the lid of consciousness. We discuss some startling similarities with the mystical experience of psychedelics and meditation, the emotional experience of appearing on national TV, speaking in front of large crowds, making an app, writing his first book, and Richie's passion to make breathwork accessible to all.

Richie Bostock, also known as The Breath Guy, teaches how to use breathing exercises to stay calm, but also to get the body into a flow state that fires up your immune system and makes you far less likely to get ill. I tried it and after a bit of light-headedness it makes you feel amazing. Richie will be teaching at the lululemon Sweatlife festival in London on 22nd and 23rd June. The following week he will be at Glastonbury, then at the beginning of August he will be bringing a sense of calm to the festivalgoers at at Wilderness. How can we effectively manage the stresses in our everyday lives? The Breath Guy, Richie Bostok, believes the answer to many of our modern-day stresses is just right here under our nose. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for the complete show notes of every podcast episode. Topics Discussed in this Episode: The Wim Hof Method Surviving in the cold The benefits of cold exposure The benefits of breathwork Coherence breathing and other breathing techniques for stress management The effects of having low carbon dioxide in the body Key Takeaways: The Wim Hof Method has a breathing component and then a cold exposure component. When you do the breathing component, it increases the pH level of your blood and makes your blood more alkaline, which has an effect on your thermal receptors such that you don’t feel the cold as much. This effect lasts 20 to 30 minutes after you finish your breathing. If we are able to stay relaxed and calm in a stressful situation like being in the cold, then the body will be able to do what it needs to do to keep us alive. It’s essentially stepping out of our own way, not allowing our bodies to become overwhelmed, not going into that stress or panic mode. Breathwork is anytime you become aware of your breathing and then use it to make a physical, mental, or emotional change. The way that we breathe is so intimately linked to our nervous system. It’s really the only function that’s governed as part of our autonomic nervous system that we actually have complete control over at the same time. You can use breathing as a full-blown form of therapy where you breathe in certain ways and it helps you to be able to uncover and to release emotional blocks, past traumas, any limiting beliefs. When you breathe slowly, it helps you to go into your parasympathetic systems. 90% to 95% of people habitually breathe up into the chest. This is a dysfunctional breathing behaviour or breathing habit that is actually neurologically linked to the stress response. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a great measure of neuro flexibility. It determines your cardiovascular and neurological ability to adapt to stress and relaxation. If you have a very low HRV, it means that your cardiovascular system is quite rigid and stuck. If you have a high HRV, it means that you’re much more flexible, and therefore, more able to be in a relaxed zone. The quickest way to increase your HRV is to breathe somewhere between three and a half to five breaths per minute. A great way to do that is to breathe five seconds in, five seconds out, through your nose, and into your belly. Action Steps: Learn two- to three-minute breathing techniques that allow you to relax when you’re feeling stressed or to help you fall asleep or to help you to create energy. Use apps like Calm for meditation and breathing exercises. Breathe slowly, breathe low, and breathe through your nose. Richie said: “In so many of these things and challenges that we face in this modern life, breathing can go such a long way into helping you to increase your overall health, your overall happiness, and performance in all these areas.” “Breathing is truly so personal, and there are so many ways that you can take it… See what feels nice and what makes you feel comfortable, and then continue with that.” Thanks for listening!
