100 episodes in, starting with me teaching myself how to use GarageBand and buying some basic equipment and bringing in a co-host, while I had a tiny baby and toddler (and no sleep!), to end up in the top 1% of all podcasts. This podcast was once simply a vision to bring together all the information I've collated over the 2 decades I've spent searching for answers to what makes us whole - as part of my own journey from disability to wellness. There were podcasts for nutrition, yoga, mental health, biohacking and all the other things, but not one that combined it all. That was my vision - a hub for well-being. And here I am, 100 episodes later! So, to mark the occasion, I asked my friend and top UK wellness expert, Jasmine Hemsley, to interview me! We had THE most expansive chat on everything from my journey from disability to wellness that brought me here, parenthood (and the juggle!), to how to make wellness a reality, and so much more. Jasmine also took the opportunity to ask me many of the rapid-fire questions I ask guests, which was a lot of fun. I speak about how, though my lifestyle may be more “extreme” when it comes to wellbeing than others, this podcast is a way for me to meet people where they're at and offer them a one-stop-shop for all the health and growth information they're looking for (and some they don't even know they're looking for!) Please enjoy this very special episode that is a huge milestone for me after so much perseverance, energy, late nights, fights with technology, pestering of guests, and a vision to create a hub that makes life optimisation accessible to all. Welcome back to The Process Podcast. In this episode, I am speaking with my good friend Jasmine Hemlsey; best known as one half of the Hemsley & Hemsley cookbook duo and for bringing Ayurveda to the masses, in the modern world. Jasmine and I met about 10 years ago as we were both beginning to set up business in the food and wellness industries. I was always inspired by Jasmine's outlook and the things she was speaking about always resonated with me more than traditional diet books and general food content. She really opened my eyes to looking backwards at nutrition through the ages, and trusting in long-lasting, ancient traditions. In this episode we have a long overdue catch up about many things; from life during covid and motherhood, to more specific life learnings and things like the daily rituals to conquer all. We discuss navigating the modern world in a way that's more authentic and true to our unique, individual selves, and we discuss more spiritual things like manifestation and visualisation and the role they play in our everyday lives, too. We talk about Ayurveda, of course, and explore the 3 doshas in-depth, as well as the keys to finding balance for our unique make up and blueprint. We also look into daily rituals - from diet and food, to beauty and relaxation - and how we can really be armed with nurturing tools at times of imbalance, stress-overload and / or rock bottom.
You may know Jasmine Hemsley from her extremely popular cookbooks, the most recent one being East by West. But Jasmine is so much more than an author of cookbooks, and the reason I wanted to get her on the podcast – and the reason I enjoyed this chat so much – was because of her dedication to getting closer to nature, and her honesty about the battle between that and modern living. We discussed: Gut health Parenting as close to nature as possible The overload of information that comes with starting on your wellness journey and how to manage that Tools for healthy living and stress-management Ayurveda Organic food Understanding the body … and so much more This was a fun, informal chat that hopefully you'll find as expansive as I did. Word quickly spread about how nourishing the food is and how well her approach to wellbeing works. She set up Hemsley and Hemsley with sister Melissa and partner Nick. The H&H brand has grown to include two best-selling cookbooks, a cafe in London’s Selfridges and a TV series broadcast globally. Within moments of meeting Jasmine Hemsley, it’s not unusual to feel an intense desire to put your health in her hands. She is a wealth of knowledge and it doesn’t hurt that her eyes sparkle and her skin glows. As someone who admits her sense of wellbeing is achieved with daily habits—many of which are simple and easy to implement—she was an obvious choice for our ICONversation about RITUALS. The truth is that while we all have good intentions, most of us are too busy for retreats and meaningful time-out… and Jasmine really gets it. Listen in as she shares her own personal struggles with keeping on track and the self-care rituals that can really make a difference in our busy, modern lives.
I had the pleasure of getting behind the mic with my well-being sister the one and only Jasmine Hemsley. She encourages people to take their health into their own hands, using great nutrition, mindfulness and balance as tools to build a strong, healthy and vital body." And we discuss exactly that. We discuss everything well-being- from; doshas to digestion, sustainable humans to sustainable fashion. Jasmine has a beautiful soul, and more simply put, just wants to help us all to be more human. "We can't all live in nature but that doesn't mean we can't all live naturally." - Tony RIddle On this week's episode of The Unconventionalists podcast I sit down with my friend and brother from another mover, Tony Riddle, who on Sunday 1st September, 2019 kicked off his epic challenge to run 30 miles every day for 30 days, barefoot. That's right, Tony will run the length of Britain with a pair of butt naked feet, interviewing experts and influencers along the way to raise awareness for sustainability and climate change. You might recognise Tony from a previous episode of The Unconventionalists podcast (ep #40), which was the very first podcast interview Tony ever did! Back then, Tony had two daughters, was training individuals people in his Camden movement studio, ran a few weekend retreats and barely had an online presence. Since then Tony has had another daughter and is now expecting a baby boy. He's trained former World Champion British boxer David Haye and has been invited to give talks around Europe at festivals and corporate workplaces. He's become good friends with The Happy Pears and Jasmine Hemsley, and was also featured on Dr Rangan Chatterjee's podcast Feel Better, Live More (ep 71) and recently was invited on the epic Rich Roll podcast (ep 463) giving spreading his message to a global audience. Needless to say that Tony was catapulted into the spotlight for all the right reasons. In fact, when Tony and I sat down for this week's interview just before he set off for his epic challenge, Tony had 21,300 followers on Instagram. By the time we published this episode, Tony had over 33,000 followers. This is an incredible and powerful conversation about how you can achieve so much more than you think by pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and putting out a big crazy dream into the world to go after it. It's also a much needed reminder as to why we are all innately wild, connected and empowered. We talked about how Tony managed to grow an organic and true following online (and what you can learn from his experience too), how Tony is getting mentally prepared for his biggest challenge to date, and of course, how Tony ended up being invited on one of the world's most popular podcast show. With great joy and love I welcome my soul sister, the author of East by West, Jasmine Hemsley. Jasmine teaches us how to bring ayurvedic knowledge into our lives through cooking, exercise, and understanding our digestion.
In the season finale, ‘Like A Boss’, Alesha and panel will be discussing bossing it and burning-out as they share their views on pay gaps, imposter syndrome and the career tips you’d pass along to your younger self. The panel includes; CEO of Stitch Fix and youngest female in history to trade on the stock market, Katrina Lake; chef, author and Ayurveda advocate, Jasmine Hemsley and acclaimed author and journalist, Katherine Ormerod.
Jasmine Hemsley, the author of East by West, was in university when she realized the food she was eating (mainly cheese toasties, morning, noon, and night) was not serving her. Over time, she adapted Ayurvedic principles that changed her life. “Ayurveda is a philosophy that understands nature and helps you understand that you are nature,” says Hemsley. She joins Elise Loehnen to talk about the three doshas and what they mean for our “digestive fire,” what and how we eat, and how we think about optimizing our health. And if you’re eating fish and chips at the airport: “Enjoy every mouthful, eat it slowly, chew it well—and be very grateful that you’ve got some food.” (For more, see The goop Podcast hub.)

This week's guest is Jasmine Hemsley. Wellness expert Jasmine first came to fame through her business with her sister Melissa, and the pair published books on healthy eating and even hosted their own TV show as Hemsley + Hemsley, which you may remember. In recent years, solo, Jasmine's interest in the Ayurvedic tradition has taken her into new arenas. Her recent book East by West is inspired by her travels in Sri Lanka and India and she also runs a sound bathing company, Sound Sebastien. Calming and thoughtful, Jasmine offered loads of practical advice on things that can help you navigate modern life - from meditation to tongue scraping...
Jasmine Hemsley has been a force in the wellness world since she started the world-famous Hemsley + Hemsley brand alongside her sister Melissa in 2014. Their first book, The Art of Eating Well, flipped the script on dieting and proved that eating well can be delicious, soul-satisfying, and not at all restrictive. Since this book became an international best-seller, Jasmine has served as a food consultant to a celebrity clientele, penned two more cookbooks, and traveled the world sharing her food philosophy with the masses. Along the way, she stumbled into a food philosophy that would ultimately change her life: ayurveda. The answer to why she always preferred hot, stewy foods and would take a burger over a salad any day, ayurveda is an ancient Indian approach to whole-body healing that focuses on centers of heat within the body. It extends far beyond food and touches on how we can find balance across our lives. Though it dates back around 5,000 years, its remedies for everything from poor digestion to anxiety continue to prove effective today. In this episode, Jasmine, a longtime friend of mbg, mbg Collective member, and workshop host at mbg's revitalize event last month, takes us through the three different ayurvedic personalities, or doshas, and how to find out which one you are. Along the way, she dispels some of the leading myths about practice, lists the little ayurvedic-approved tweaks that she can't live without, and provides top tips for anyone looking to dive deeper into this timeless approach to healing. We all go on our own journeys with food. I’ve gone through quite a few phases in my journey – from hardcore vegetarian to hardcore raw protein to, now, something more balanced and less inflammatory. Now I don’t care what you eat – you can eat a sofa if you want – but a lot of people mindlessly eat more than their fair share, a lot of the time. That doesn’t help you, and it doesn’t help the world. The key to finding the optimal diet for your body is appreciating your food, and being more conscious about when it serves you and when it doesn’t. Of course, we live in a fast-paced world. Finding and preparing the best food doesn't always feel easy – and that’s where today’s guest, Jasmine Hemsley, comes in. Jasmine is a wellbeing expert and creator of the East by West, a modern take on Ayurvedic principles & recipes for today’s busy world. Beginning with a pop up cafe in London, East by West is now a cookbook containing 140 delicious (and simple) recipes that focus on using the ancient Ayurvedic philosophy of eating to nourish, sustain, and repair. The Vedic lifestyle isn’t about strict rules or regulations, and it’s really a lot less stressful than most diets – it’s simply a philosophy for living well that emphasizes bringing balance into your lifestyle. Ready for the ultimate mind-body balance? –Luke Topics Discussed In This Episode: Becoming more conscious about food Growing up with a Filipino mother & English father Creating a healthy family bond around food Coming up with SO MANY amazing recipes Utilitarian eating VS being a foodie The creative process Combining the Paleo-Primal way of eating with the Ayurvedic diet Gut health Cooking tasty meals that include organ meat Why some people need animal protein in their diet Appreciating your food Where hunger begins & cravings end Emotional eating Sound bathing & the effects of sound on your blood Marrying East + West The nutritional difference between some cold & hot foods Meat as medicine The science of living Simultaneous & incredible inventions throughout history (How did different civilizations build pyramids at the same time, without contact?!) Vedic architecture The proper pace for eating (“There are no teeth in your tummy”) Food combining; it’s better to have good digestions and a bad diet than it is to have bad digestion and a good diet More about this episode. In this episode I talk to Adam Vanni, director and co-founder of Jarr Kombucha. He gives me a tour of Jarr's production facilities in East London and we talk about how they launched this product in a market where people didn’t understand what kombucha was. We consider how much luck may have to do with beginning a company from scratch, and the importance of community to make an idea reality. We talk a bit about the science behind kombucha and we touch on the health benefits, as well as how it gets its flavor and distinctive fizz. We also hit on the fermentation "trend" that has recently gained momentum. Follow Jarr on Instagram @jarrkombucha and check out their stockists at https://jarrkombucha.com/ At the beginning of the podcast when I talk about Ayurveda, I refer to Jasmine Hemsley's cookbook "East by West." My castaway today is Jasmine Hemsley Jasmine is a well being author and chef. She is one half of the hugely successful Hemlsey and Hemsley brand which she runs with her sister. Together they have amassed an army of loyal followers, they have a popular blog, a range of products, they’ve written 2 cookbooks, they have a café in Selfridges AND they even had their very own show on Channel 4. Last week Jasmines first solo cookbook, East by West came out which is all about Eastern wisdom for western wellbeing and is packed full of delicious looking recipes which all follow the Ancient holistic healing system of Ayuverda. I have to admit Ayuverda was all new to me but I definitely learnt some things and found some good food for thought in there which I hope you will too. There’s some really delicious food in today’s episode so I wouldn’t recommend listening on an empty stomach, but I mean, when is that a good idea?? I love the sound of the of the chicken soup for the soul. Chicken soup really is the remedy for everything. Whether you have a cold, you need a hug, or you just need some comfrt. I love the thought that countries all over the world have their own versions and I loved hearing about all the amazing food inspiredby Jasmine's Filipino heritage. The Filipino version of a chicken soup is called Tinolo and is chicken soup with lots of ginger, which sounds delicious. I also fell in love with the sound of "Adobo" – the dish Jasmine described as chicken cooked in lemon juice, garlic and soy sauce. That sauce defitinitely sounds like something I need to have a go at as it's would be a very versatile sauce you could use on anything. A useful sauce to have up your sleeve, one might say. Though probably not in the literal sense, as that would just be plain silly. I'm sorry to say I did not actually discover the answer to bloating. But, the good news is that Jasmine says it's in the book so I am reading the book! Desert Island Dish: Filipino feast cooked by her mum Luxury item: a Swiss Army knife…and a silk pillow Thank you so much for listening. Don’t forget to subscribe, rate and review. It really does make a difference and I would be very grateful! And don’t forget to have a look at the shiny new website: www.desertislanddishes.co - it’s packed full of information about the castways, their episodes AND there is now a recipe section so for each episode there is a dish I have created inspired by that person’s Desert Island Dishes. Exciting! Have a look and let me know what you think. My email is hello@madebymargie.co.uk See you next time for more Desert Island Dishes Margie x
