Eric G is here to spill the beans on how to transform your home into a breath of fresh air—literally! From tackling those pesky crawl spaces to installing vapor barriers, we'll uncover those small yet mighty projects that pack a punch when it comes to cleaner indoor air. Plus, we'll chat about why sometimes it's smarter to hire a pro instead of wrestling with insulation yourself. So, grab your toolbox and let's get this air quality party started—your lungs will thank you!Indoor air quality can be a sneaky villain in our homes, lurking in the shadows and making us feel less than stellar. Eric G dives into the world of DIY projects that tackle this issue head-on. First up, he takes us on an adventurous crawl through our homes' underbelly—the crawl space. Did you know that over 60% of the air we breathe inside our homes comes from this often neglected area? Eric's got the scoop on how to transform that creepy space into a clean air powerhouse. From picking up some Tyvek suits and N99 masks to ridding the area of unwanted trash, he lays out the steps for creating a solid vapor barrier that keeps moisture at bay. And if you think your DIY skills can save you money on insulation, think again! Sometimes, hiring a pro is the way to go, especially when energy rebates can help foot the bill. So grab your toolbox and let's get to work, because a healthier home is just a project away!Takeaways: Improving indoor air quality doesn't have to break the bank; sometimes small DIY projects can make a huge difference in your home's health. Crawl spaces can harbor tons of unwanted air pollutants, so it's crucial to keep them clean and well-ventilated for better air quality. Installing a good quality vapor barrier in your crawl space can prevent moisture issues and improve the overall air quality in your home. Kitchen ventilation is essential; using the right range hood can drastically reduce indoor cooking contaminants and improve your home's air quality. It's a no-brainer that maintaining your bathroom vent fan can prevent fire hazards and improve indoor air quality when cooking or showering. If you're serious about your indoor air quality, consider professional help for larger projects, as they can often do it cheaper than DIYing. From battling high humidity to steering clear of those sneaky air fresheners that are practically just glorified vape pens, we're on a mission to help you breathe easier. Plus, we'll chat about the hidden dangers lurking in your cleaning supplies and furniture that could be messing with your air quality. So, grab a comfy seat and let's get to work on sprucing up that indoor atmosphere!Diving into the nitty-gritty of indoor air quality, Eric G. drops some serious wisdom in this landmark 2000th episode of The Around the House Show. It's a celebration of not just the milestone but also the summer season, where fresh air is on everyone's minds—well, it should be! Eric lays out his top 10 tips for improving indoor air quality, starting with the sneaky culprit: high humidity. With a cheeky grin, he explains how humidity levels above 50% can invite mold and dust mites to throw a wild party in your home. He suggests a couple of nifty gadgets like humidity monitors, which can help you keep your levels in check. And speaking of gadgets, Eric gives a nod to the high-tech world with smart carbon monoxide detectors, reminding us that safety should never go out of style. But don't think he's stopping there! The episode takes a playful turn as Eric talks about the dangers of using plug-in air fresheners. He cheekily likens them to vaping indoors, giving us all a reason to reconsider what's really wafting through our living spaces. Instead of masking odors, he emphasizes the importance of ventilation—yes, those bathroom and kitchen fans are not just there for decoration! They play a crucial role in expelling humidity and harmful chemicals from our homes. As we roll through Eric's list, he touches on the importance of air filtration—because let's face it, who wants to breathe in all those nasty particles? Whether you're a fan of HEPA filters or just looking to understand your current system, Eric's got tips to elevate your air quality game. This episode is packed with actionable advice and a sprinkle of humor, making it a must-listen for anyone looking to breathe easier this summer.Takeaways: To boost your indoor air quality, keep humidity levels between 30% and 50% for optimal health. Using air fresheners at home can be harmful, akin to vaping toxic substances indoors. High humidity levels can lead to mold growth and dust mites, so monitor humidity closely. Ventilation is key; always use high-quality bathroom and kitchen fans to expel moisture and contaminants. In this episode, Paul Laursen, Paul Warloski, and Marjaana Rakai tackle one of the least understood but critically important VO2 max limiters: the lungs. From the phenomenon of exercise-induced arterial hypoxemia (EIH) affecting 50% of elite athletes to practical methods for respiratory muscle training, the trio breaks down the science of lung function and its real impact on athletic performance. Whether you're curious about lung size, high-performance breathing tools, or simply how to get more oxygen into your bloodstream, this episode offers actionable insights and an engaging discussion around a key pillar of endurance capacity.Key Episode TakeawaysLung function can limit VO2 max, especially in elite athletes experiencing EIH.Environmental irritants like smoke and pollution can compound oxygen saturation issues.Four key mechanisms cause EIH: ventilation-perfusion mismatch, high cardiac output speed, physiological shunting, and alveolar hypoventilation.Training respiratory muscles can reduce the impact of EIH and improve performance.Tools like the Breathe Way Better bag and PowerBreathe help train lung musculature.Lung size correlates with body size and can impact VO2 max, especially in smaller-stature individuals.Women are more likely to experience EIH due to generally smaller lungs.VO2 max improvements also aid in submaximal performance by increasing efficiency.Paul Warloski - Endurance, Strength Training, YogaMarjaana Rakai - Tired Mom Runs - Where fitness meets motherhood.

We are thrilled to introduce our guest, Dr Jay Wiles, who is an international speaker, scientist, clinician, influencer, and subject-matter expert and authority on the interconnection between the human stress response and health performance/optimization. Dr. Wiles is a clinical health and performance psychologist with board certification in heart rate variability biofeedback and peripheral biofeedback, and works as a leading consultant in psychophysiology for health influencers, professional athletes and teams, executives, and high performers. He has pioneered new and innovative means of using heart rate variability (HRV) and respiratory training as both diagnostic indicators of the dynamic nature of the human stress response, alongside therapeutic tools for regulating and conditioning this response for peak human performance. In this conversation we dive into the topic of HRV and discuss: What is HRV and how does it reflect your body's stress response? How your HRV at night impacts the quality of your sleep. Why HRV is the single greatest metric to better understand your adaptability to stress, both physical and psychological stress. The myths of HRV - including how you can't compare your HRV to others. What is resonance breathing and how it can be effective to regulate your nervous system and become more resilient to stress. I don't know where exactly it came from, but it allows me, if I'm stressed out or feeling overwhelmed, I go for a very, very long walk or sit in the hot tub. That way I get alone time. No phone and just give myself an opportunity to think without the input of others. Whether listening to a podcast, music or nothing. Just total, total silence to think through things. And then, when something's stressful, I ask myself, is there something I could do about it? If not, I move on. If yes, I do the thing. Thoughts On Breathing I recommend James Nestor's book, Breath. I had a very obstructed airway for a long time. I got nose surgery. a septorhinoplasty in 2018 at age 28. It has forever changed my life. I can now breathe through my nose. It's amazing. I'm way calmer. I sleep better. I can scuba dive. I can hike. Breathing slowly is good. Breathing through the nose is good too. Bullying Story I would say I wasn't like a chronically bullied kid, but I definitely had confrontations. I would say I also bullied some kids at summer camp. Mindfulness would have made a big difference because it would have allowed me the moment to pause before I acted. I would have been able to take that moment to think whether there was ever a situation where I had a bullying event towards me. It's actually funny. My daughter is three and a half. And the other day, I said, what did you learn at school? And sat in a little pose and she said, mindfulness. It's great to see kids thinking about that. And they have this little angry corner. So if you're mad at someone, you can go there and hang out. It's funny. She came home and she said a kid pushed her today and she cried and another kid grabbed her an ice pack.
