On 10th December, 1907, angry medical students and animal rights activists were clashing over a controversial bronze statue of a brown terrier who had been dissected at University College London in 1903, revealing violations of animal experimentation regulations. The ‘brown dog' case fuelled the anti-vivisection movement, kickstarting a fundraising appeal that culminated in the erection of a memorial in Battersea - chosen as the statue's location because of its association with the famous dog home - and, ultimately, some of the worst rioting ever seen in London… In this episode, The Retrospectors consider why this seemingly innocuous drinking fountain required round-the-clock police protection; explain why there was a link between feminism and animal rights campaigners; and reveal the considerably less controversial statue that still stands in Battersea Park... We're finishing Season 11 of #MondayMile with a big one, as this week, entrepreneur, TV star and podcast host @spencermatthews joins me for a stroll. It's 3 miles around Battersea Park, which is light work for the man who's currently prepping for a frankly SUPERHUMAN challenge – 30 marathons in 30 days across the Sahara Desert It's never been done, and if you're not convinced that it's possible, you will be by the time you've heard our chat. Spencer talks me through his motivations for this world-record attempt. He's got ambitious fundraising goals for a noble charitable cause, which he speaks passionately about, but there's something personal in there too. Spencer is driven, and it's illuminating to hear how he's managed to take a complete U-turn from his self-destructive, boozy lifestyle to one of routine and discipline. From his fears, his family and finding balance, we cover it all, and I'm left feeling really inspired. Thank you Spencer, and best of luck! The Outdoors Fix is a podcast to inspire you to make the outdoors a bigger part of your life. It's hosted by Liv Bolton. Elise Wortley is an adventurer who follows in the footsteps of intrepid female explorers of the past. Her fascination with these women has taken her on expeditions all over the world for her Woman with Altitude Project, from the Himalayas dressed in a yak coat and wooden backpack; to Iran trekking with a mule in a 1930s Burberry mac; and to the Scottish Highlands, wearing a 1940s cotton skirt and hobnail boots. More recently, Elise took part in Channel 4's survival series, Alone, where she managed to survive for weeks on her own in the Canadian wilderness. Elise took me for a walk in Battersea Park in London and we recorded her episode of The Outdoors Fix podcast there. I wanted to find out what was behind all of Elise's adventures, how she balances it with her full-time PR job, and what it took to survive for weeks in the Canadian wilderness. Elise shares her bushcraft and survival tips at the end of the episode, so make sure you don't miss her advice. There's also a minute of the sounds of nature for a little bit of escapism in your busy day. Elise's episode of The Outdoors Fix is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever else you get your podcasts. It's also embedded below. I hope you enjoy it! I went to work on Saturday morning. In the afternoon I went to the park. It was a nice day. I saw cherry blossoms in the park. Every year in spring I go to Battersea Park in London to see the cherry blossoms. It is a bit far from my house. But there are lines of cherry blossom trees in the park and it's very beautiful. The cherry trees were in full bloom. There were many people taking photos. Some people were doing hanami (cherry blossom viewing). Battersea Park is large. In front of the park is the River Thames. You can see the city of London over the river. I like the view of the river and the city. I also like the bridges. Do you have recommendations for places in your town?
As the speed project draws near, The Big Run will be celebrating its return with two special episodes to mark the ten-year anniversary of this unique event. For the uninitiated, TSP is a 340 mile relay race from LA to Vegas where the only rules are there are no rules. Teams compete to see who can make it the iconic, “welcome to Las vegas” sign in the fastest time possible. A few weeks ago I went to Join NOID, a London-based team linking up in Battersea Park with some of their support crew for a mini race simulation… In this episode, you'll hear from members Mo, Ayo, Nathan, Jonty, Jen and Molly and some of their crew Emma and Ben. Welcome to episode 121 of the award-winning Women's Running podcast! I am your host Esther Newman, and she is your other host Holly Taylor. We recorded this on the 1st December, so we're in the middle of some strong Advent content. We then slowly move on to our very excitable chat about our big award win. We are chuffed to bits that the Women's Running Podcast – this podcast you're currently listening to - has been voted Podcast of the Year for the second year in a row, and we have a lovely pink award, and two very large hangovers to show for it.Running a 5KThen we finally move on to running. We talk about running a 5K round Battersea Park, which we did last Wednesday evening for SportsShoes at the RunThrough Chase The Moon event, which we thoroughly recommend, with lots of high vis and bright lights and nice snacks. We also talk about our slightly epic journey back to Bath afterwards. New year's resolutionsI talk about a big fat new year's resolution with my running here, but it's not what you might think – it's not distance or pace or number of races or anything like that. Holly is also gearing up for her new year's resolution, and it's also not what you might think either. Lots of surprises here today.Running veganAnd then we have a bloody huge announcement about food, because we're going to do Veganuary with our friends over on the Simply Vegan podcast, and we're a bit scared about it, because Holly loves her cheese, and I love my bacon. But we're getting our own back by helping them train for a half marathon, which is around the same time as Paris, so we're all going to be training together, powered by Shroomdogs and Facon. This week Jen tasted everything she could at Balance Festival at the Truman Brewery and at Taste of London in Hyde Park (just the packaged food vendors) and shares the new products worth your time and taste buds' attention. Three new crisp-alternative snacks and a host of products that will help your gut health thrive. And three cookies that probably won't, but it'll be worth it. Plus, not from the festivals, there's a gooey, rich chocolate and peanut butter brownie she picked up and devoured from a coffee shop near Battersea Park, and a vegan sandwich from a small chain with locations in and near the City of London.Latest London Food Recommendations:For the full list of brands and businesses mentioned in this episode and the full transcript, visit: https://thenextdeliciousthing.com/2022/06/22/the-most-delicious-food-products-at-balance-festival--taste-of-london-2022About this London food podcast host:Jennifer Earle is the founder of London's first food tour business - Chocolate Ecstasy Tours - and a former food buyer and food developer. We continue our detour from the London Bridges to head around Battersea Park. We enjoy the beautiful greenery on the edge of the city and take in a game of cricket. We chat about how not to let things you don't know stop you from going for a job you want. To often we think we need to fit all the criteria and if we don't we dismiss ourselves instead of asking what we can bring to the job. Of course there is the usual mind blowing Handy Hints from Tishy. Come walk with us.

In the 1950s Battersea Park opened it's own Funfair, and once it did the horror filmmakers came running. Horror films - including "The Mutations" starring Donald Pleasance and "Gorgo" London's 1969 answer to Godzilla - used the bright lights of the funfair to contrast with dark stories, that is until the Battersea funfair had a real-life horror of its own.

Mark heads up the Cottage group that meets in Battersea Park every Tuesday night and he spoke to us about the nature of the group and the manner in which they train. Groups, such as Cottage, who bring together athletes from a large variety of more traditional athletics clubs, might well be the future of the sport. Enjoy!
This week's adventure is taken in the company of Chloe Bourjallia, a fellow adventurer in life and an intuitive life coach. She’s here with a message of hope, and talks about how to go for what you love, live in line with your values and how every breakdown is an opportunity for a breakthrough. KEY TAKEAWAYS Adventure can be physical, like travelling or climbing mountains. But it can also be spiritual, emotional and psychological. It could be making a decision to leave a relationship and not knowing what that’s going to bring to your life and how you’re going to sort out the mess. It’s really about making decisions that are a little bit risky, owning that and expecting that the best will come out of it, even if you don’t know. Adventure has enriched my life so much and my relationships, my understanding of people, my understanding of myself, my ability to deal with fear and shit hitting the fan when you least expect it. Finding your values is really important. Very often, people confuse values with how they would love things to be, ideally. Actually, your values are who you are inherently without even trying. This sounds really cheesy, but the way to find your true nature is to listen to your heart. Take a moment and forget about the money, the job, the responsibilities and all the things you think you need to do and the expectations other have about you and you just take some time, meditate, and ask yourself what you love – things, people, places, feelings, freedom, travel, anything – as soon as you set the intention it starts happening and you start seeing hints and clues. 2020 was going to be the best year for me, I was going to get married in Mauritius, it was all booked and then everything stopped and I was very angry at life, the government and circumstances. But we still got married in Battersea Park and it was perfect. But it took us a lot of refocussing on what really mattered for us and stay true to what we wanted it to be. In this Placecloud essay, I take listeners to Battersea Park, a name synonymous with the rescue of cats and dogs. Between the Old English Garden and the bank of the River Thames, there is a statue of a dog. This statue was erected in the park in 1985, commissioned by British anti-vivisection groups, but to meet the dog it depicts, we have to look back over a century. This essay, and the dog it is about, explore Britain as a nation of animal lovers and shows how urban space can become a landscape where we fight for others, including other animals.

This episode of the podcast is with Phil Norman. Phil is a British Steeplechase athlete that, at the time of recording, had just won the Comeback 5000m at Battersea Park. This was a win that rewarded Phil with a 50% share of a £1500 prize pot. I was so excited to talk to him as what I already knew about his story was inspiring. What took place in the next 50 minutes of talking to him was nothing short of inspirational. For many athletes in the UK, they have to make sacrifices in their own lives to make it to the top. Phil is no exception to this and one of the main sacrifices that he has had to make is explain in this podcast. Who is this podcast aim at? This podcast is perfect for:° Athletes that are working full time and trying to find the motivation to train° Young athletes who have had success at a young age but not sure whether they want to keep pushing themselves in the sport° People who competed in the sport when they were younger and are wishing that they kept it up° Any fans of Phil's tash
PAUL KAYE is from Bolton in the UK. He studied for a year in France - his first pure language immersion experience. After University, Paul completed TEFL training with the idea of teaching English in Hungary but instead he ended up in Slovakia for three and a half years as a teacher, broadcaster and journalist. This was a seminal part in his life and set the stage for the many work, life and travel experiences that followed. Paul now works as a translator for the EU. He was seconded to the UK in 2014 to facilitate initiatives to promote language learning in the UK. This secondment ended in early 2020. He would normally have returned to Brussels but there was nothing normal about 2020 so he is currently working remotely from London. Paul has many interests, many of which have intersected with his working career over the years. These include cross-country skiing, cycling a number of Eastern Europe country borders, photography and documentary writing (he has published three books - see links below), travel, language learning, and a follower of both cricket and football. Paul's biggest claim to fame to date was acting as interpreter for Sir Alex Ferguson when Manchester United played Slovakia in the 1990's. “When you're laughing in distance…a whole bunch of people who will echo your laugh; you know you're not alone.” There's nothing better than a walk in beautiful Battersea Park in London with a friend who makes you laugh. Neila is an effervescent interviewee who has lit up my life today with her reflections on "hilarious happiness", doctoring her friend's selfies, believing "it will come" and discovering the Battersea pagoda, pictured. Make a cup of tea (I'm obsessed I guess) and let her raise your spirits. Welcome Welcome to Episode Four of the view from the crow's nest, I thank you very much for joining me. Today's episode is going to be probably a bit shorter than the previous three. And it's a question that somebody asked me that I wanted to, to answer. But before I do, if there is anything that you want to ask me if there is any feedback you want to give me if there is any encouragement or support that you want to, you know, just drop over to me then please do. Please, I'd love to hear from you. Come over to Twitter's probably the easiest one at Romeo crow on Twitter, and just ping me a message you can also find me at Romeo crow on telegram. And you can go to my websites etc etc. So, we'd love to hear from you. Anything that crosses your mind, then please do ask it the reason I say that is because I am quite aware that I don't think necessarily too conventionally, and I certainly don't have dreams and aspirations and run my life from love with my wife we don't run our life like kind of the majority are normal people we're kind of a bit bonkers in some ways, and one of those ways and leads me on to this question if somebody was saying, Well, how can you afford to travel and not work. And the so so I just wanted to address that just very quickly, in case mostly because I want to give anybody listening to give you some inspiration that you might use go, Ah, I didn't really think of it like that maybe I could change things around my life because everything. You know everything one does should really be working towards in some small way their ideal dream of how they want their life to be and by dream I'm not talking necessarily about, you know, your dream house or your dream possession, although that could be part of in fact yesterday or the day before I did it banging on about a house, but I'm talking about how you want your, your days to be you know everyday because there's only so many things that you could buy. If you'd like buying things but generally they're really pleasurable things that we have in life are really simple spending time with people going for walks. And, you know, some food we eat, having a nice meal together. It's generally not, you know, experiences, that, that, really, we tend to remember rather than the purchases or what have you. And so, in my mind, I have created, and then with my wife we've created together, our view of our future out perfect kind of lifestyle. And part of that is actually Well, this is a when good in the future but how can you achieve as much as you can have that today with what you've got. So, the perfect lifestyle for us was oh you know we'd go for a walk every day together, and a few other things, you know, and that's a really simple kind of idea now when we're in London. When we're living in Battersea we could only go for a walk in Battersea Park, because you know London's obviously a city and there are lots of parks, and we're by Betsy parked a beautiful park, so that's great we went for what during the day. But what would be really nice is to go for an evening walk after dinner, but do not really go for an evening walk in Battersea it's not exactly the place to do it. And so, you know, you work with what you've got. When we're in this gear as we are now an evening walk is beautiful. The weather's good people are out the restaurants are open, it's all that pizza culture you know people out sitting in the street drinking coffee and whatnot. And so, you find what you can do with where you are right now and then you do your best with that and then you make the small incremental changes and they might not seem like a lot within themselves, but over a period of time they really do mount up. So, to get to the question of how can you afford to do we, you know, to travel and whatnot. Well, the first thing I would say is, what we spend our money on you know there's essentials that we spend our money on food and rent and things like that. And then there's obviously non essentials and I'm n --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theviewfromthecrowsnest/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theviewfromthecrowsnest/support

This week, we interview historian Howard Spencer to reveal the story behind the new blue plaque at the Chelsea house where reggae singing sensation Bob Marley lived in 1977 after fleeing from Jamaica. It was while living here that Marley and his band the Wailers finished recording songs for what became the Exodus album, including Waiting in Vain, Three Little Birds, One Love and Jamming. The house is also near the pitches in nearby Battersea Park where Marley and his bandmates played football. It's 1972. It's London, England and in Battersea Park loads of kids are riding a roller coaster with a worse safety record than Doctor Octopus. In what queazy funfair patrons are already calling the 23rd episode of the CB Wallop Podcast join Phil Jerrod and Phil Lucas as they discuss The Big Dipper Roller Coaster Crash - the rotting 50s roller coaster that was built for the Festival of Britain, ruined the lives of countless families and was then promptly forgotten by everyone. Scream if you want to go faster!? No.. no thank you. Trigger Warning: This one involves the death of five children. So it's very tragic and sad, but the details are sketchy. Also - as you would expect - roller coaster chat is quite prevalent. This week, Vauxhall is the latest high-profile name to join the line-up of the 2017 London Motor Show. Following the successful relaunch of the event in 2016, the show returns to Battersea Park with Motor Trader as the B2B media partner. New car registrations hit a new record with 2.69 million vehicles sold in 2016, with many commentators predicting a slowdown in 2017. Lloyd Motor Group, the family-owned Carlise-based retailer, has acquired Clelands Jaguar for an undisclosed sum, and Lookers has bolstered its management team with the promotion of MD Nigel McMinn to the role of chief operating officer. McMinn joined Lookers in 2013 from Benfield. In another news, Smart has started to sell cars online with deliveries direct to a customer’s home or local dealer within 12 days of credit acceptance, and thousands of UK motorists are to launch a lawsuit against Volkswagen over #dieselgate. The class action is led by UK law firm Harcus Sinclair UK which specialises in large group litigation. cap hpi has confirmed the last printed edition of the iconic Black Book used car value guide will appear in February. At the same time, it will also phase out its Red and Green books, for commercial vehicles and motor cycles, in a move that will see the group complete its transition to a fully digital service. Finally, Philip and Derek discuss the big story of the week, with the Sytner Group acquiring the CarShop supermarket chain for an undisclosed sum.

#255 Radio Speed Phone-In. 2015 Summer Music Compilation. Gareth takes calls and music requests from F1 legends to find out what they are doing on their Summer Holidays. Plus “Going Down The Road” a brand-new On Speed tune from Britpop heroes Blurb.
Fracking is once more in the news, there's a report that soil erosion in East Anglia could seriously affect our food production, electricity could be cheaper but dirtier, Formula E in Battersea Park, it's getting hot in the Tube and I talk to Daniel White from Global Energy Systems on why you need a heat pump. Well, perhaps not today, but the word is that this weather won't last, in spite of global warming.
#254 Formula E. Part 2 of our coverage of the first London ePrix. Gareth gridwalks with Alejandro Agag, Bruno Senna, Nicolas Prost and Nelson Piquet Jr. Plus in the grandstands with fans to witness the sounds and spectacle of Formula E at race pace.
In this episode we go through all the action from the season ending, championship deciding, double header London E Prix. It was quite a satisfying event, which is more impressive considering it was held in a bike lane around Battersea Park. Nick Heidfeld proves that electric cars can't be push started. Bruno Senna makes his rear end as wide as a Brazilian lady. The English dedicate a corner to their love of penis piercings. F1 elitists get sand in their vagina over Richard Branson's comments, but is he just stating the inevitable? We try and decide on a "Pastor" award for the FE season. And no, that's not for giving the most glory to god after any victory. And just like the rest of the internet, us two playstation experts give actual driving experts advice on what they should be doing. Oh yeah, and a couple of World Championships are given out, we talk about that too. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
#253 Formula E. Part 1 of our exclusive coverage of the first London ePrix. The sound and speed of FE cars, is it enough? Gareth interviews Alex Fontana, and his boss Jarno Trulli and catches up with his old A1GP buddies Salvador Duran and Karun Chandhok.
You'd have to be the ultimate amatuer to get through an entire podcast only to realise that you weren't recording, right? Heh-heh. Yeah, so let's just say we got better with age and call the first attempt a rehearsal. We cover the action-packed Austrian Grand Prix, canvas all the news from the paddock and beyond, and turning a negative into a positive this will be the first episode not to feature a Superquiz (mostly because after the first time through Rod knew all the answers!). #Pioneers Best of all we caught up with Formula E commentator Jack Nicholls ahead of the season finale double-header at Battersea Park this weekend. For the full "F1" Chat with Jack check out our website and hear his true thoughts about Fan Boost, what car he drives and whether Michelin are legit about returning to Formula One. Links Brawn targeted as the man to save F1: Jonathan Noble reports that Christian Horner wants F1's favourite fisherman to set the regulations straight. Ferrari ready to supply Red Bull with engines: Crazier things have happened. Pirelli and Michelin go head-to-head for 2017 Formula 1 tyre deal: What is it good for? Hopefully quality racing. Monza and Imola could share Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix: #StillABatterLoveStoryThanAzerbijian. Is now the time to change open-top racing?: Friend of the show Michael Lamonato lays down the argument for introducing cabins in F1. Superlicense F1 Chat: Rod catches up with Formula E commentator Jack Nicholls. Rod's profile on The Roar: Newest member of the Expert line up on The Roar, now bringing you a weekly column rather that just a race recap.
It seemed to be due to an inadvertent oversight that a Christian radio station could not hold a radio licence, so there was considerable joy for the pioneers when, at last, a station like Premier Radio could launch. Hear here the countdown at Battersea Park in 1995, and then the voice of Peter Meadows , in conversation with the then Programme Controller, Mark Seaman.

South London appears in Morrissey's work time and time again. We track the many references, starting at Battersea Park where You're the One for Me, Fatty was filmed, cut through Clapham for Interesting Drug and end up in Brixton, where the Smiths played their final gig. We're joined by Rob Pollard, journalist and Morrissey fan.
Pete Gostelow rode twenty thousand miles across Africa and passed through dozens of countries. In doing so he showed that the bicycle is the best way to travel. In this episode we continue our ride to Battersea Park and talk along the way about where he slept, what he ate, what his motivations were for making the journey and what it’s like to be back home after such a long trip. Pete also explains the inspiration he thinks ordinary cyclists can take from his long African adventure. Continue reading →
In this series of Ramblings Clare Balding is going on wildlife walks around the UK. Today she is in Richmond Park in London with internationally renowned sculptor and artist Nicola Hicks M.B.E. Nicola's work focuses on animals sculpted in straw and clay and drawn on huge sheets of paper. Dynamic and distinctive, it has gained wide critical and public acclaim. Her statues of a dog in Battersea Park and a giant beetle in Bristol have become local landmarks. Twenty years ago, Hicks grew tired of the pressures of the London art scene and decided to make her artistic love of wildlife a reality. She decided to move her growing family to Cumbria and become a sheep farmer. It was steep learning curve with many joys and setbacks. As Clare and Nicola explore the surprisingly rich wildlife habitats of Richmond Park, she discusses her acclaimed artwork, her deep love of British countryside and wildlife and the highs and lows of adapting to rural living. Having just taken the decision to sell the farm and the rolling hills to return to London for good, Nicola shares with Clare her excitement and sadness at the transition. Can you really find walking and wildlife satisfaction in London? Nicola shows Clare how, she passionately believes, you can find natural beauty, insects and animals as rich and diverse as that in the countryside. Producer: Lucy Dichmont.
