Stress, irregular working hours, drugs and alcohol are not good for your health - people who work in nightlife are much more exposed to these risk factors than others. According to a 2021 study, for example, almost 66% of DJs and electronic music artists have suffered from burnout at least once during their career - but it's rarely talked about. It's time to break this taboo! What is the best way to deal with the risks that come with a night-time profession? What structural changes would be necessary to take better account of the mental well-being of employees and artists? And what successful approaches are known, e.g. from other professional environments? This episode was recorded live during the Vienna After Dark conference. "It's a dream to share a passion with your best friend." The German duo talk about life on the road and writing their first album in six years. Together, Felix Wagner and Aaron Röbig make up the dynamic duo FJAAK. As one of Germany's best-known nightlife exports, they've earned a reputation for being techno's "boy band," gracing the stages of festivals and clubs all over the world for the last ten-plus years. Wagner and Röbig met in Spandau, an area just outside of Berlin, when they were both still in school. Equally interested in music (especially hip-hop), they started working on beats together alongside two other friends. The four-person group turned into FJAAK, and when they all moved to the city centre together after finishing their studies, they started living collectively and touring the project, achieving traction quickly. FJAAK is now just a duo—the group dwindled from four people to three, and then, in 2019, to just Röbig and Wagner. They claim they're closer to soulmates than friends; they know everything about each other and seem so in tune as to be almost telepathic. "The super power we've evolved over the years is to live a harmonic life together," Wagner said. In this RA Exchange, Röbig and Wagner talk about navigating through life with someone by their side, their thoughts on equality and meritocracy in the music industry, how they work together in the studio, their record label and their new album, FJAAK THE SYSTEM, which came out in May. Listen to the episode in full. This episode was recorded and filmed at Pirate Studios.

This series has seen us team up with Pirate Studios to spotlight artists and challenge them to a quick fire mix showcasing as many blends, transitions, tips and tricks as possible in a short time. Next up is ELLES, a familiar face in the London underground music scene who has released music on the likes of Naive and Love On The Rocks. A wicked DJ and a talented producer, she is set to release new music and has just launched her own new label, Emotional Intel. Her music sits precariously placed between a number of styles and genres, yet cannot necessarily be pigeon holed. At times it's dark and pensive, at others it's light and euphoric. It's all mood based and as reflective as much of ELLES own character and emotion as it is in an attempt to be one thing or another. This mix and interview was recorded at Pirate Studios in Dalston and showcases a playful, versatile approach to DJ'ing - something which ELLES is keen to cement in the idea that the role of a DJ is to soundtrack a moment or experience in time. The dancefloor is the place to let loose and this mix celebrates that.
In the first of a new series we invite Jacana People to take to the decks for a special hotmix, showcasing as many tracks and tricks as they can inside ten'ish minutes. Recorded live at Pirate Studios in Dalston - this mix powers speedily through House, Breaks and beyond. Jacana People are a duo with a penchant for creating delicately crafted Electronica with melodic undertones. The pair have risen to prominence following a string of releases with have gathered wide support and demonstrate a knowledge and expertise well beyond their years in respect of sound design. The pair begun working together in the studio and have since evolved into DJ'ing thereafter. This mix spotlights some of their creative influences and tastes in a short space of time.
The first in a new series spotlighting the musical community based around Pirate Studios. Emma Lou is an eclectic DJ who weaves an intricate web of RnB, Hip Hop, Downtempo and beyond - a perfect accompaniment to a Monday afternoon. Emma Lou does things a little bit differently - seeking to cement herself as a DJ who is capable of meandering between styles and sounds rooted in her own influences growing up - blurring the lines between the new and the old. Focussing on Funk, Soul, Hip Hop and RnB her selections often create a certain ambience, one best enjoyed in dimly lit clubs or during quiet moments of personal reflection as you lose yourself in some old RnB B-Side from the late 90's or a forgotten sample from long back. A relatively fresh faced DJ on the scene she has begun to build a presence for herself with guest appearances on the likes of Rinse FM and Reprezent Radio. She has most recently taken up a residency at Pirate Studios, utilising the opportunity to define her sound in more focus and build upon her musical repertoire. This is the first mix in a new series which will spotlight artists from within the Pirate Studios community - Emma Lou makes a splendid start, with deep moving cuts which highlight her broad knowledge and eclectic taste.

We're just two days away from the big day. Politicians are making their final push, voters are asking the big questions and activists are making themselves heard. In this episode of September 26 we are joined by Paulina Fröhlich, the Head of 'Future of Democracy' at Das Progressive Zentrum Berlin. Paulina takes us through what happens in the hours and days after voting closes at 6pm on Sunday. Will there be massive US style watch-parties or will Germans be on the couch in front of Tagesschau? Will there be exit polls and when will we know who Merkel's successor is? We look at the ‘new' ways in which the candidates are connecting with the voters through social media and town hall conversations. And we acknowledge the dangers of having AfD present during the election period, and what their power in certain regions could mean for Germany. Finally, Paulina shares the vital role that activists play during the election period and after. Looking toward climate action from the Friday's for Future movement, Greta Thunberg taking part in the Berlin Climate strike, and how this influences parties and their policies. Thank you Paulina for chatting with us, Pirate Studios for making our recordings possible, and Epidemic Sound for the theme song.If you enjoyed this episode and would like to hear more, help us make that happen by donating to our PayPal. The big day is almost here and Germany's election campaign season is heating up. With just two weeks to go, debates are being televised, parties are having literal parties, and local candidates handing out brochures to anyone who will take them. While the chancellor candidates are taking center stage, the German political machine is so much more than Annalena Baerbock, Olaf Scholz, and Armin Laschet. In this episode, we speak to Julius van de Laar, a political strategist and communications expert with extensive campaigning experience of his own. He helps answer our questions about campaign finance, how political foundations play a role in campaigning both in Germany and abroad, and how candidates are slowly (but surely) devoting more of their time and funds to digital advertising. We also get into the nitty gritty of public and private donations, and the talk of “dark money”. And Julius also shares a bit about his own experience as a campaign strategist and how he helps German candidates.Thank you Julius for chatting with us, Pirate Studios for making our recordings possible, and Epidemic Sound for the theme song.If you enjoyed this episode and would like to hear more, help us make that happen by donating to our PayPal. This year's ‘Superwahltag' or super election day will mark the exit of Angela Merkel as chancellor but that's not all that is happening in Berlin. On September 26th, eligible voters in the German capital will also be asked to decide on two regional elections, and a much anticipated referendum!James Jackson, a freelance journalist, joins us in the final episode of the batch to take a look at how Berliner's usually vote, what issues they care about and how the city state does or doesn't influence national politics. We explore local candidates, their policies and their strongholds. How have they been received so far, and how have the various scandals affected their standing? James also sheds light on the housing referendum, it's similarity to the Brexit referendum, and what the potential outcomes could mean for citizens. In three weeks time, Germans will vote to elect a new Bundestag or federal parliament. The country's biggest parties and their top players are currently vying for your attention and your vote. But who are these key players and what exactly are their policies? In this episode we are joined by journalist Kate Brady to get a better understanding of the chancellor candidates and the parties themselves. How do parties choose a chancellor candidate? Does Annalena Baerbock have a chance of coming in ahead? How could Armin Laschet maintain the stability some Germans are looking for from the CDU? How has Olaf Scholz become the frontrunner? What will happen to the grand coalition come September 26? How do smaller parties like the FDP, AFD, and Die Linke impact the coalition-building process? We've seen a clear and often founded rise in the level of disenchantment and apathy among voters. Just taking a look at recent election outcomes across various world powers, it's no surprise that people feel like their votes hold no significance. Especially when they are living in Germany, paying taxes and building the economy, but hold no legal right to vote. Why does it even matter? Well, it matters for a number of reasons. In this episode we are joined by William Noah Glucroft, a reporter who has been living in Berlin for 12 years and works covering Germany and transatlantic relations. William highlights the importance of knowing what's going on in your city, your state and your country. Particularly a country like Germany, the 4th largest economy in the world, with huge economic impact and political influence on the European Union and the world. As we look to a new chancellor and the possibility of change, we explore what your vote could mean for the future of climate policy, Germany's actions with the situation in Afghanistan, trade, transport, housing, healthcare and much more. We're a month away from Germany's big day and eligible voters have begun to receive their election notifications. Understanding the basics of how an election works is obviously helpful, but it is vital that you know who, or what, you're voting for. Are you voting for a party? A person? What about bills? In this episode, Kai Wegrich, a professor for Public Administration & Public Policy at The Hertie School in Berlin, joins Jill and Julia to explore the history of voting in Germany, the difference between elections to the Bundestag (Germany's federal parliament), the Landtags (states), and local elections, and the role that mayors play in the country. We also get into what to do when you receive your Wahlbenachrichtigung (election notification), how to fill out a ballot, how postal voting works and much more. The 2021 German elections are said to be a super election, potentially the biggest since reunification. After 16 years, September 26 marks the end of the ‘Merkel Era' and Germans will head to the polls to decide the next leaders of Europe's largest economy... But how does it work? And who leads? Is it one party or many? And what exactly is the Bundestag? In the inaugural episode of this series we start at the very beginning. Jill and Julia are joined by Clare Richardson (https://twitter.com/clarereports), a journalist and news anchor, currently reporting on her second round of German elections. We learn the structure of the German parliamentary system, the difference between the president and the chancellor, and how local, state and federal elections function. We also explore the rules of campaigning, how parties get one of the 709 seats available in parliament, why Germany operates under a coalition government, and much more. It's been 8 months since #033, and in that time I'd even technically 'retired' from DJ-ing as I didn't see where it was going during the pandemic. And even after loving being back in Pirate Studios, I don't know whether this is me back or not. The past 12 months have given me a to think about, and turning 40 in December has also put life into perspective. We'll see what 2021 brings, but I'm not gonna push it. This mix is nearly 2 hours, and barely scratched the surface of what's out there. Of course, I missed loads I wanted to play, but there you go! COMING TO YOU LIVE FROM PIRATE STUDIOS, YA'LL!!!!! That's right! This week Kelly and Lindsey sit down at Pirate Studios with return guest and Lindsey's big little sister, Jessica Gentile to talk Florida, lizards and The Jerky Boys. We start off our school day in Ecology class where we do a deep dive into the scaly, slinky world of lizards because nothing makes Florida girls happier than talking about reptiles all day, every day. Then Kelly plays teacher in Zoology/Herpetology/Swampology class where we play "All About Alligators". Spoiler: These three know way too much about alligators. For recess we reminisce about the olden days where we listened to the Jerky Boys and thought it was appropriate. Go ahead and listen now and tell us what you think. Woof. Then Lindsey takes us to... hmmmm... Weird Florida Laws class? Pre-Law, Florida Style class? FlorLegal class? In this class we discuss the weirdest Florida laws, including what you legally can and can't do while wearing a bathing suit in Florida. We end our school day in Criminology class where we play "Florida Man Mashup". Buckle up for way too many stories about people on meth doing absolutely insane things that involve nunchucks, tasers and Pringles tubes filled with wine. In the final episode of the season we check-in with a Bigwig that spans the entire city of Berlin, existed in the days of horse-and-cart and will probably continue to influence our lives for generations to come: The BVG. The BVG may have started as a transport company, but it has become a firm favourite in the world of advertising and marketing with its hilariously self-aware campaigns, political weigh-ins and smart collaborations. Jill and Julia are joined by the BVG's Social Media Manager, Thilo Stracke, to learn all about the inner workings of the BVG, the “shitstorm” turned marketing genius that was their “Weil wir dich Lieben” campaign, the stresses of the job for train, bus and tram drivers, how Corona has affected the company and of course that infamous Adidas Shoe. Nick Dunn: Surviving Hell | Nick Dunn joins me in today’s conversation is a harrowing story of true courage and compassion. Nick Dunn is an ex-paratrooper and a veteran of Afghanistan. He is best known for being part of the Chennai Six, a group of six men who were detained by the Indian coastguard and falsely accused of ferrying illegal weapons. This is the story of his time in jail, the family that campaigned for his release, the tireless love from his sister, and the mother he holds in his memory that he lost while he was in prison. He talks about his fellow prison mates, and what kept him sane while he was inside, and he tells me the story of him running a marathon alongside his sister who was running for his freedom. In this episode, hosts Jill Beytin and Julia Joubert, explore the stories that have shaped one of the most beloved spaces in Berlin: Tempelhofer Feld. Through speaking with two people who work intimately with the space on a daily basis, we discover how the airport building itself has changed in the past century and how people like those from the Tempelhof Projekt make its upkeep their life's mission. We also explore the incredible history that Tempelhof holds and get into some of the human stories - as shared by Frédéric Dubois of Field Trip - that have come from the Feld. From the heritage upkeep on the airport to the Berlin Airlift and the Feld's role in Nazi propaganda, Tempelhof has played a huge role in making Berlin the city it is today. In this episode, back in Pirate Studios, I had a chat with the wonderfully talented dancer and musician, Saskia Horton. We talk dance before getting in to her gender identity as well as talking pronouns, societal pressure and sexuality. We had a bit of problem with the audio towards the end, so apologies for the abrupt finish!
Ivan Blackstock is a multi-disciplinary creative, who started (and remains) in the dance scene. He is someone I looked up to for a long time, so it was great to have a chat with him. We discuss his departure from Birdgang, his feeling of being underappreciated and his future plans. Thanks to Pirate Studios for hosting us this week.
Welcome to Time To Talk with Alex Holmes where I sit down with inspiring people and have wholehearted conversations. This week, author and satirist Nels Abbey speaks about the disparities between Black and White people, ‘Think Like A White Man’, and how we learn to show up in a world that is committed to oppress us. Interview with the artist : Virtual Underground : How has this SRVNT story started? SRVNT : My love for music and djing started a long time ago influenced by my older brother, who had his equipment at home, and who taught me how to mix using turntables. The learning process with the beauty of the vinyl made me feel a strong connection with the idea of mixing different tracks and make them sound cool together. Years later, I attended a techno party and, although I already knew a little about techno, that night I felt a strong connection with it and with the environment, and I felt the need to start playing it. VU : Where do you generally draw your inspiration from? SRVNT : As a DJ, it mainly comes from listening and discovering music continuously, -either techno or other genres in electronic music- following my favorite artists, their sets, their releases… Also, my closest friends who feel music the same way as me can inspire me too. VU : Could you describe your music selection and mixing process? SRVNT : I made a playlist with around 40-50 tracks based on the kind of sound I like the most, and how I wanted the set to be, but this can change as they are influenced by my mood in that period too, it depends, sometimes I feel better playing more kind of deep techno in lower bpms or vice versa. Generally, I like to start with some dark ambient to get into the mood and little by little playing heavier tracks, mixed as I felt they should be in that moment, and finishing with a tune that could stay in your head afterwards. VU : Which software/hardware did you use for this set? SRVNT : I recorded the set at Pirate Studios in Manchester equipped with 3x CDJs 2000nxs2 and DJM900nxs. VU : What are you working on right now? SRVNT : I have started to produce recently, and I feel motivated with it, but it is too soon to talk about results. #Virtual #Underground #Techno follow and support @crlsrvnt
7 months. 7 months since my last mix, and boy does it feel like a lifetime ago. And it's not for lack of wanting to put one out. The global pandemic royally fucked us all over, and has meant that I've not been able to get to Pirate Studios until recently. And I will say that I'd been flip-flopping over whether to even bother to put another mix out. I've no idea if I have any relevance in the UKG scene any more (if I ever did!!) but I won't let it put a damper on this. So here it is, #033 . (Just) over 100 minutes of UKG from the lost time that is 2020. I had a really nice time putting this together, so I hope you all have a listen and shake a leg to it if you're feeling it. JMC take a look at gender expectations within their respective cultures. Gully reflects on how boys have been treated differently to girls through his time growing up in Asian culture and acknowledges the privilege he has held as a man. The guys also delve into the idea of slut shaming, body count and the mindset of men when it comes to sex. They also discuss the positive side of girls marrying later, the positive impact of women in the WWE and male female polarity in a relationship. Episode 100! I met up with the one and only Chaka Malik... singer for Burn, Orange 9mm and Ghost Decibels. We linked up at Pirate Studios in Greenpoint, Brooklyn to talk about a couple two, three things. We discuss music, shows, and even get a little deep and talk a bit about life and maturity. This was a lot of fun for me to do and an honor to have Chaka on as my guest for Episode 100. Much respect to Chaka and thanks to every single one of you who continue to listen and support this podcast. You are absolutely appreciated!

#015 wasn't too long coming, yet almost didn't happen at all! But it is here, and with a new take on things. I'll be using Pirate Studios going forward to record my mixes, utilising their club-standard Pioneer DJ NXS2 setup to get the best sound I can. For this mix, I enlisted friend of 'It's A Lot' MRfame - head honcho at UKGU - to go B2B for 80 minutes of all things UKG. It was a blast, and I'm hoping to get more DJs/MCs into the studio for future mixes. In the first of our newly revamped Flying Vinyl podcast we headed to our new home at Pirate Studios in West London to meet indie sensations Black Honey ahead of the announcement of their debut album. The interview is a hugely in-depth look at the bands life over the last three years and everything that’s about to come. In the interview we chat about inventing the idea of being a woman in a rock band (3:17), shit jobs, (5:18), cinematic referencing (7:36), dropping the strict ‘no synth policy’ (10:20), the outrageous new album (12:14), filming at a western-style theme park without permission (17:30), soul sapping social media (21:30), getting pissed in label meetings (27:05), what it means to be a Flying Vinyl band (31:00), how being a woman in tech is tougher than being a woman in music (33:06) and finish with newly released anthem ‘I Only Hurt The Ones I Love’. Viva La Revolution.
