Jeannette talks to Ric Moylan, a leading performance coach, about his journey from a passion for sports to becoming a performance coach, working with both elite athletes and everyday individuals. Ric has coached 10 World Champion athletes in all aspects of their physical development and mindset performance. Household names including boxing legend Ricky Hatton, W.B.A World Super Bantamweight Champion Scott Quigg, ATP Tennis star Liam Broady and many more have all turned to Ric for guidance in their professional careers. Ric shares insights on mindset, the transition from sports to business, and the importance of setting goals and fundraising for a cause. He emphasises the principles of high performance in sports and how they can be applied to business leadership KEY TAKEAWAYS The principle of doing the basics well, as mentioned by the speaker, is crucial for success in both sports and business. Setting goals and having a purpose, such as training for an event or fundraising for a cause, can provide motivation and drive to achieve success. Having someone to talk to and hold you accountable, like a coach, can help in managing stress, self-doubt, and imposter syndrome. Acknowledging that personal growth is a journey with no ceiling and requires constant work on oneself. BEST MOMENTS "I think having that ability is one of the key characteristics of high performance, being able to really focus on what it is they wanted to achieve. Then when they achieved it, they would quickly move on to the next target, the next goal." "One of the biggest principles I talk about is this principle of what I call the lonely walk. Whilst the challenges of sport are very, very different, the physiology, the principles, the feelings are all the same." "The situation is different, but the feelings are the same. So the way we train a high-performance athlete to be at their best in terms of delivering at that crucial moment, whether that's a penalty kick or whether that's a pitch for new business, it is exactly the same." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. BREAK: CUofGA STORY 1: Man Sentenced to Life for Austell Murder Douglasville resident, Sony Lebrun, 37, has been handed a life sentence without parole for a murder case dating back to August 2021. The Cobb County jury found him guilty on multiple charges including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and firearm possession. Lebrun's conviction relates to the fatal shooting of Eric Stone, a consequence of road rage at the Premier Lane Apartments in Austell. Witnesses pinpointed Lebrun as the culprit and his presence at the crime scene was confirmed by GPS cell phone data. Cobb Superior Court Judge Sonja Brown presided over his sentencing, commending the diligent efforts of law enforcement and prosecutors in the case. Cobb County Assistant District Attorneys Jay Winkler and Donna Merrell represented the prosecution for District Attorney Flynn Broady Jr.'s office. Broady underscored the importance of this conviction in reinforcing community safety. STORY 2: Fatal Crash in South Cobb No Longer Investigated as a Hit and Run The investigation into a fatal crash on Veterans Memorial Highway has taken a turn. Authorities have stopped their hunt for a black SUV previously thought to be involved in the incident. Instead, the collision has now been attributed to a motorcycle operated by Christopher Johnson hitting pedestrian Melissa Winslow. Winslow sustained severe injuries as a result of the accident. Tragically, Johnson did not survive and was declared dead at the scene. Initially, it was believed that Winslow had been trapped under the SUV, but further investigation clarified that the SUV's driver had stopped to inspect the damage before leaving the site. The unfortunate event transpired when Winslow attempted to cross the highway. Johnson's motorcycle hit her, causing her to be thrown into the westbound lanes. The case continues to be under scrutiny by local authorities. STORY 3: Cobb Sheriff Recognized for 'Triple Crown' Accreditation Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens recently received recognition at the Georgia Senate for a significant achievement by his office. His department has secured accreditations from the three most prestigious law enforcement credentialing authorities in the U.S - the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, the American Correctional Association, and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. The Cobb Sheriff's Office now stands among an exclusive group of 100 sheriff's offices across the nation and only five in Georgia to have attained this honor. Owens underscored the critical role of professionalism in law enforcement during his remarks. He generously attributed this accomplishment to his devoted staff, whose efforts have materially elevated the agency's standards and services, ultimately benefiting the citizens of Cobb County. This achievement highlights the commitment of Sheriff Owens and his team to uphold the highest standards of law enforcement excellence, underscoring their dedication to serving the community with integrity and professionalism. This proposal has managed to secure a rare consensus across party lines. Key elements of the plan include deploying school support officers, procuring technology to detect weapons at events and within school premises, and conducting a financial analysis. Cobb Sheriff Uses Drone to Nab Suspect Marietta School Board to Issue Final Decision on "Flamer" 21st Annual MDJ Gobble Jog Fights Poverty This Thanksgiving All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Cobb Sheriff Uses Drone to Nab Suspect Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens praised the use of a drone unit in the arrest of 28-year-old Antonio Carter for violating probation. Deputies, serving a warrant at a Marietta motel, encountered Carter who fought with them, then fled into nearby woods. The drone unit, along with deputies and K9 units, tracked Carter to a neighboring apartment complex where he was found hiding in a laundry room. Carter was arrested without incident, showcasing the effective use of technology in law enforcement. Owens commended the diligence of the teams involved. Carter, facing probation violation charges, was previously arrested in April for multiple offenses. STORY 2: Marietta School Board to Issue Final Decision on "Flamer" The Marietta Board of Education is set to make a final decision on the fate of the book "Flamer" by Mike Curato at a special meeting. The book was removed from Marietta High School's library due to Superintendent Grant Rivera's judgment of "highly inappropriate, sexually explicit content." Parent Kayla Sargent filed an appeal to reinstate the book, arguing against book banning and claiming the removal is linked to the main character, Aiden, being gay. Supporters of the removal thanked Rivera during public comments. The board's decision on Thursday is expected to be final, but Sargent indicated the community might continue addressing the issue through elections. STORY 3: 21st Annual MDJ Gobble Jog Fights Poverty This Thanksgiving The 21st annual Gobble Jog, sponsored by the Marietta Daily Journal, will take place on Thanksgiving at Marietta Square to support MUST Ministries in fighting poverty. The event, featuring 10K, 5K, one-mile, and "tot trot" courses, is expected to draw 10,000 runners, aiming to raise over $500,000 for food donations, shelter, job creation, and other resources for the impoverished in Cobb and nearby counties. Dr. Dwight "Ike" Reighard, CEO of MUST Ministries, emphasizes the impact of the race, stating that participants are not just running for their health but making a meaningful difference in the community. Runners can register online or in person on race day, and "phantom runners" are encouraged to support MUST from a distance. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Broady, facing a reduction in Victims of Crime Act grant funding, sought county support. Gambrill questioned why other departments with staffing needs weren't considered and argued using insurance premium taxes was against board policy. Commissioner Jerica Richardson suggested strategic planning for county program funding. Despite acknowledging equity concerns, Commissioner Monique Sheffield emphasized the responsibility to protect Cobb residents. Sometimes services depend on spiritual beliefs and practices. Other times, the service or remembering is held long after the honoree has transitioned. On this episode, we dive into the history of death and burial in the south, explore what some would call uncommon death rituals and perhaps broaden our perspective on how we can honor the dead. The suit, filed by Mableton residents, argues that House Bill 839, which created the city, violates the state constitution's single subject rule by creating both the city and community improvement districts in the same act. The lawsuit seeks a declaratory judgment to void the bill and the city. Melton, along with attorney Michael Foo, will represent Mableton in the case. The city will pay Melton $750 per hour for his services. The lawsuit poses a significant threat to the existence of Mableton as a city. STORY 5: cupid The Cobb Board of Commissioners has rejected a proposal for a church on a residential street in Mableton, Georgia. The vote was 4-1 against the request, with Chairwoman Lisa Cupid being the sole dissenting vote. The request from Aguas Vivas Centro Familiar de Adoracion initially sought a 10,000-square-foot building, but the Planning Commission stipulated it should not exceed 5,000 square feet. The church representatives brought a 6,800-square-foot proposal to the commission, arguing that the smaller size would not meet their needs. Opposition to the church primarily came from the Mableton Improvement Coalition, citing concerns about traffic and noise in a residential area. The board rejected the application due to the mismatch with the land use category and concerns about future expansion. Story 6: engram The Jacksonville Jaguars have reached a three-year contract agreement with tight end Evan Engram, who was franchise-tagged by the team. The financial details were not disclosed, but it is reported to be a $41.25 million deal with $24 million fully guaranteed. An overflowing, standing-room only crowd, saw the future of college basketball Wednesday night as Wheeler took on McEachern at Lovinggood Arena. The Wildcats' Big 3 of Isaiah Collier, Jelani Hamilton and Arrinten Page took on the Indians' of Jamichael Davis, Moses Hipps and Ace Bailey in the Class AAAAAAA state quarterfinals and neither group disappointed. However in the end, it was too much Collier and Page. The USC-bound duo combined to score 49 points and Wheeler came away with a 79-71 victory. The win moves the Wildcats into the state semifinals where they will face Grayson at Georgia State. Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday night at 8 p.m. The Wildcats haven't played the Grayson Rams since the beginning of last season, but several of the players and coaches are familiar with each other through AAU basketball. The Rams booked their ticket to the semifinals Wednesday night with a 46-29 win over Walton. District Attorney Flynn Broady made a hard sell this week in his effort to secure funding for a new domestic violence center in Cobb. In a lengthy presentation before the Board of Commissioners on Tuesday night, Broady touched on everything from the rising rate of abuse and domestic violence locally, to his own childhood experience defending his mother from his abusive father with a baseball bat. His efforts — coming about a month after a previous request was put on ice by the board — were successful. The board voted 4-1, with Commissioner Keli Gambrill opposed, to allocate about $460,000 to get the Family Advocacy Center up and running in the coming months. That appropriation was significantly scaled back from Broady's ask in January of $1.4 million. Commissioners were initially wary of using the county's reserve funds to cover the costs of the center's staff, saying paying for ongoing costs (like personnel) outside of the annual budget isn't county policy. Some still remained wary of the smaller ask at a work session Monday morning. The DA's office has pitched the center as a “one stop shop” for victims of abuse, where they can meet with nonprofit and law enforcement partners for legal help, counseling, and shelter services. The center would effectively serve as another service point to connect victims with resources like LiveSafe's shelter in Marietta, which is a partner in the venture. As far as the funding, the board arrived at a compromise whereby it would pay for the startup costs for the facility on Fairground Street in Marietta, just north of South Marietta Parkway. But it declined to pay for an additional $88,000 that would have increased funding for staff. Of the many volunteers in Cobb County Schools, so many stand out for their service to the community. In honor of their service, the Cobb Schools Foundation honored a “Volunteer of the Year” from each of the county's 112 schools at a luncheon Wednesday. All honorees received a certificate and got a picture with Superintendent Chris Ragsdale and Felicia Wagner, executive director of the Cobb Schools Foundation. The volunteers recognized for their contributions ranged from PTA board members to leaders of local churches and other community organizations partnering with schools to support students and families in need. Principals from each school wrote messages explaining their selections for Volunteer of the Year. Ragsdale said the packed exhibition hall at Jim Miller Park was indicative of so many volunteers' commitment to making Cobb Schools the best they can be. He acknowledged how both businesses and individuals alike are deserving of recognition for their volunteer contributions to the district, and that both bring so much to the table for students, teachers and administrators in all schools across the county. Powder Springs is now accepting applications for its 2023 Neighborhood Beautification Grant program, which awards between $500 and $4,000 for eligible visual improvement projects in neighborhoods, including entrances, common spaces and building exteriors. Applicants must provide a funding match of at least 50% of the project cost and manage all aspects of the improvements to be made. Grant applications are available for download on the city's website, cityofpowdersprings.org, with completed applications due March 31 at 5 p.m. Homeowners associations, neighborhood organizations and similar neighborhood-based organizations are eligible to apply. Such organizations must be open to anyone living in the neighborhood who meets the membership requirements, and membership must be targeted to a specific geographic area. Multi-family residential property owners are also eligible to apply. WSB journalist Condace Pressley encouraged a banquet room filled with 36 of Cobb County's best and brightest high school seniors this week to embrace continuous learning as they soar into their futures. The annual STAR banquet, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Metro-Marietta, recognizes high school seniors with the highest SAT scores and grade point average from public, private and charter schools across Cobb County. Pressley encouraged everyone in the room to stay curious, ask questions, and arm themselves with knowledge. Four of the 36 students were selected as finalists at the banquet and will advance to compete in the regional contest. Those finalists are: Walton High School's Tianyue Xu, who plans to attend Preston University to study Latin. He credits his Latin teacher Alan Farnsworth for his academic success. The Walker School's Raj Shroff, who plans to major in economics but has not decided on a university yet. He honored Dr. Cindy Shafer from the school for her focus on non-traditional curricula. Matt Rossitch, also from The Walker School, plans to attend the University of North Carolina or Washington and Lee University, and will likely pursue economics or medicine. He thanked his economics teacher Michael Arjona for his success. And finally, Lassiter High School's Matthew Cargill, who hopes to major in mechanical engineering at Georgia Tech Kennesaw State University's School of Art and Design will present its annual family-friendly Spring Arts Festival on March 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free festival features activities for all ages and interests at Chastain Pointe Studios, across from the main campus in Kennesaw. Wheeler point guard Isaiah Collier was selected as a McDonald's All-American and will compete in the 46th annual high school all-star game March 28 at the Toyota Center in Houston. Collier became the first Cobb County boys player to make the game since McEachern's Sharife Cooper earned the honor three years ago. He is the 13th McDonald's All-American from Cobb County, the ninth boys player and the sixth player from Wheeler, joining EJ Montgomery (2018), Jaylen Brown (2015), Jelan Kendrick (2010), JJ Hickson (2007) and Shareef Abdur-Rahim (1995). Collier, who recently signed with Southern California, is one of two players from Georgia who will play in the game. He will suit up for the West team, while Newton guard Stephon Castle, a Connecticut signee, will play for the East. Collier will be teammates in the McDonald's game with Kentucky signee Reed Sheppard, Stanford signee Andrej Stojakovic (Stoy-yah-kavich) and uncommitted Bronny James — the respective sons of former Kentucky star Jeff Sheppard, former NBA All-Star Peja Stojakovic (Stoy-yah-kavich) and current superstar LeBron James. Collier and Bronny James recently faced off when Wheeler traveled to Los Angeles to play Sierra Canyon in the Chosen-1's Invitational. Collier had 17 points, but James scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half to lead the Trailblazers to a 66-55 victory. More than 11 million new tons of plastic pollute the oceans every year. Local Cobb County REALTOR Janice Overbeck wanted to know what is being done to combat one of the world's most critical environmental issues, so she co-wrote, co-directed and produced the new documentary, "Plastic Earth," hosted by actor/comedian Rob Riggle. Overbeck personally investigated how new inventions and technologies are working to stop plastic debris from overwhelming the planet, killing wildlife and contributing to climate change. The film will be available on iTunes on February 7. For more information, please head to Plastic Earth Movie dot com. When Dr. Luis Torres was working toward his undergraduate degree in his native Puerto Rico, he would have never guessed that a dinner invite would change his path in life. A Life University recruiter invited him to dinner, and then shortly after he attended Life Leadership weekend and decided he wanted to be a chiropractor. Dr. Torres found himself in Marietta on the pathway to becoming a Doctor of Chiropractic. After years of hard work and dedication, he graduated in March 2021. Soon after graduation, he got the opportunity from his alma mater to head the newest branch of LIFE Chiropractic Centers in San Juan. The clinic officially opened in the winter of 2022, but a grand opening ceremony was held in October where many from Life U's executive leadership team and Board of Trustees attended and hosted a one-day continuing education event and ribbon cutting. Life U President Dr. Rob Scott, Vice President of University Advancement & Enrollment Dr. Gilles LaMarche, Board of Trustee member and Puerto Rico native Dr. Eddy Diaz and Vice President of Global Initiative Dr. John Downes were just a few of the special speakers and attendees at the grand opening. According to Dr. Torres, plans for the clinic's future include continuing to care for patients in the community and increase patient volume, but also serving as a hub where other Life U alumni in Puerto Rico can gather for continuing education, meet and greets and simply to recharge their passion for the profession with their colleagues to serve a population that is growing more aware of the benefits of chiropractic care. District Attorney Flynn Broady's $1.4 million funding ask to get a new local domestic violence center off the ground was put on hold by Cobb commissioners this week. The pause appeared to stem in part from a communication breakdown, as several commissioners said they were hearing of the request for the first time, while Broady reportedly tried multiple times to discuss it with the board prior to their meeting. The Family Advocacy Center, as the location will be known, was unveiled last month on Fairground Street after years of planning. It's billed as a hub for victims and survivors of domestic violence, where a coalition of community groups and agencies can provide support all under one roof. The center was partially funded with a $400,000 grant from the state, and will be the first of its kind to open in Georgia, according to the DA's office. Broady was set to ask for an additional $650,000 to fund the center through the end of this fiscal year, and another $815,000 for fiscal 2024. About a fourth of that money was for the initial improvements and equipment for the building; about half was for salary for the center's staff. Some commissioners initially balked at the proposal because Broady asked for the money to come from county reserve funds. The county has in the past hesitated to use that money to pay for recurring expenses, like hiring new staff. Broady said he was willing to drop the item for now, that he'd like to for the commissioners to commit to meeting with him in the next few weeks to “get this back on track.” The newly formed Cobb County chapter of a national nonprofit that works to bring people out of poverty has named Barbara Garner of Marietta as its executive director. Circles USA has over 80 locations in the U.S. and Canada. Circles Cobb was established last year by a board of community nonprofit and business leaders. Board Chair Holly Tuchman said when the founding board members discovered Circles USA, they "all decided that this would be a great program to bring to Cobb County." In the later half of 2022, Tuchman said she and Vice Chair Jeri Barr joined the board and moved forward with finding a director who could lead the organization. Tuchman said the board wanted the executive director to be extremely familiar with the community. Garner, who most recently served as the donor services manager for the Cobb Community Foundation, said extensive nonprofit experience and passion for serving others will help her excel in the role. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.
