Chapter 1 What's Washington Square by Henry James"Washington Square" is a novel by Henry James, first published in 1880. It tells the story of Catherine Sloper, a wealthy but socially awkward young woman living in New York City during the 19th century. The narrative explores her relationship with her domineering father, Dr. Austin Sloper, who disapproves of her suitor, Morris Townsend, seeing him as a fortune hunter. The novel delves into themes of love, loss, and the constraints of society. Catherine's struggle for autonomy, compounded by her father's skepticism and her own insecurities, positions the novel as a study of character and moral complexity. James' nuanced prose captures the subtleties of personal relationships against the backdrop of New York's upper-class society, making it a compelling exploration of social norms and individual desires.Chapter 2 Washington Square by Henry James Summary"Washington Square" is a novel by Henry James, first published in 1880. The story is set in New York City during the early 19th century and revolves around the life of Catherine Sloper, a young woman living in a wealthy but emotionally cold household.Catherine is the daughter of Dr. Austin Sloper, a well-respected but stern physician, and his deceased wife, who was a glamorous socialite. Catherine is described as plain and socially awkward, in stark contrast to the vibrant world that her mother once inhabited. Following her mother's death, Dr. Sloper becomes increasingly critical and dismissive of Catherine, believing that she lacks the charm and capabilities to attract a suitable husband. As the story unfolds, Catherine meets and falls in love with Morris Townsend, a charming and attractive young man who appears to be drawn to her wealth rather than her personality. Despite her father's disapproval of Morris—whom he considers a gold digger—Catherine is determined to pursue the romance. Dr. Sloper tries to dissuade Catherine from the relationship, but she is resolute in her feelings. The novel explores themes of love, money, familial obligation, and social class. It showcases James's keen observation of social dynamics and the complexities of human relationships, particularly through Catherine's struggles with her father and her own emotions. As the plot progresses, Morris's true intentions become dubious, and his reluctance to commit to Catherine as her fortune comes into question. This leads to a push-and-pull dynamic between love and financial security. Ultimately, Dr. Sloper's stern, oppressive nature clashes with Catherine's desire for independence and happiness. The novel concludes ambiguously, with Catherine's decision to stand firm in her beliefs, leaving the reader to ponder her future and the sacrifices she has made for love and self-identity. "Washington Square" is often regarded as a profound character study, examining the intersections of romance, ambition, and the constraints imposed by society and family.Chapter 3 Washington Square AuthorHenry James, an American-British author, is well-known for his psychological realism and intricate narratives that explore the consciousness of his characters. He was born on April 15, 1843, in New York City and passed away on February 28, 1916, in London, England. Washington Square"Washington Square" is one of Henry James's most celebrated works, published in 1880. The novel centers around the life of Catherine Sloper, a young woman in New York City who struggles against her father's overwhelming authority and societal expectations as she seeks love and independence. Other Notable WorksHenry James is known for many significant works. Some of his most outstanding titles include:The Portrait of a Lady (1881) This is considered one of his masterpieces, focusing on the character Isabel Archer and her quest for personal freedom and identity. The Turn of the Screw

After another four-week break, the run-in for the 2024 Formula One World Championship starts this weekend with Round 19 - The United States Grand Prix from Austin, Texas. Alex Kalinauckas and Ben Hunt join Bryn Lucas from the Autosport Podcast studio and together they catch up on all the autumnal news before previewing the race itself. Last week we found out that Haas and Toyota have formed a new technical partnership, the Japanese manufacturers' first presence in the sport since 2009 as they "share resources" with the American-British team. Alex goes into detail as to what the relationship entails, and whether it's the first step for a full-bodied return for Toyota. There's also a discussion on Alpine's future in the sport as the French team confirmed they'll be ceasing to build F1 power units when the regulations change in 2026 and whether Mick Schumacher is a late contender for what could be 2025's final remaining seat at Sauber. And of course, there's a preview on COTA, with a newly repaved surface set to benefit a rejuvenated Red Bull, amidst claims the Milton Keynes team could be back on form, with an upgrade package set to be used in Austin, and why their rivals at McLaren are reluctant to do the same. And how will COTA handle their track limits after their 2023 controversy and Haas's "right to review"? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

As broadcast October 5, 2023 with plenty of love left over for all buskers everywhere. Tonight we had another pair of exclusive interviews with current contestants at this year's Gwangju Busking World Cup. First up is a very talented singer-songwriter in Daisy Chute, an American-British singer-songwriter born in Scotland now based in London. Her playlist is a collection of artists she works with and respects highly, a collection of gorgeous organic indie folk and ambient orchestral soundscapes. For hour 2, we welcomed an internationalist quartet based in Barcelona in S. Taki, who are led by Sergio Taki and accompanied by Nacho Padron, Diego Gonzalez, and Tommy Min. All the members hail from different places in the world but work with one heart and mind, creating a multi-genre cumbia-centered sound in their work. A compilation of the newest motivational speeches by the American-British 4x Kickboxing world champion, self-made multi-millionaire Andrew Tate.
At 14, Hadley Freeman—now a prominent American-British journalist, then a teenager struggling with anorexia nervosa—moved into a psychiatric ward to treat her condition. She spent three years there, only to leave without truly recovering, instead spending more than a decade struggling with obsessive-compulsive disorder, substance abuse and ongoing anorexia that became a new normal for her. This year, Freeman, now 45, turned her reporter lens against herself by publishing a memoir about that era, Good Girls: A Story and Study of Anorexia. The book is being heralded as incisive, self-deprecating and insightful; Phoebe sits down with Freeman for a deep dive into the memoir, her Jewish roots and how the modern medical community addresses mental health. Plus, Avi and Phoebe discuss the bizarre social media story from this week about a Hasidic gay man who was outed as not actually being Hasidic, and also the future of Frasier, which is at least adjacently Jewish_._ Credits Bonjour Chai is hosted by Avi Finegold and Phoebe Maltz Bovy. Zachary Kauffman is the producer and editor. Michael Fraiman is the executive producer. Our theme music is by Socalled. The show is a co-production from The Jewish Learning Lab and The CJN, and is distributed by The CJN Podcast Network. Support the show by subscribing to this podcast or donating to The CJN.
2023 marks the first time greenhouse omissions will decline while energy consumption, production, and populations are increasing. New, environmentally sensitive production systems (solar, wind, etc.) are biting into the fossil fuel history. These are just the tip of the iceberg for environmental and sustainable investing opportunities that could help turn back the tide of damage to the planet. Even more importantly, looking after the planet and learning how to govern for a positive future for all mankind should sit at the center of how we build new from our existing corporations to the future corporations.Today's podcast is with an expert who will guide us through what that conversation we should all be having as leaders in major enterprises as we learn to re-balance. Keesa C. Schreane is the author of Gambling on Green: Uncovering the Balance among Revenues, Reputations, and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) (Wiley, September 2022) and Corporations Compassion Culture: Leading Your Business toward Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (Wiley, 2021). She works for Refinitiv, an American-British global financial market data and infrastructure provider. The company was founded in 2018. It is a London Stock Exchange Group subsidiary after a US$27 billion-dollar sale from previous owners Blackstone Group LP.The core of the ESG debate is not just centered on the idea of sustainability but around a complex interaction of variables changing how we work as a society. If we handle them correctly, those triggers could drive a deeper and more pronounced commitment to the principles of ESG.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In Episode 82, the 966 hosts fly solo and discuss some of the top developments of late on Saudi Arabia - and there are a lot of them. First, the hosts discuss Richard's One Big Thing, which is the readout of the recent call between the U.S. National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, and Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. There were a lot of “Easter eggs” in that call's readout from the U.S. side, especially the focus on new priorities and less on the traditional dynamics of U.S.-Saudi relations. Next, the hosts discuss Lucien's One Big Thing this week, which is the Saudi-Iran thaw. When announced, the detente was surprising, and a timeframe of two months was declared. Lucien provides a timeline of what has happened since , and lays the foundation for a discussion on how Saudi Arabia's foreign policy has shifted in just a few weeks - not just on Iran, but on Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, and others. Then the hosts finish up as always with Yallah! A discussion of six top storylines on Saudi Arabia from the previous week to get you up to speed headed into the weekend. 3:47 - Richard's One Big Thing is based on the readout of the recent call between the U.S. Here's what the Readout said from the U.S. side:“National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan spoke with Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud of Saudi Arabia today. They discussed a number of global and regional matters, to include ongoing diplomacy related to ending the war in Yemen. Mr. Sullivan highlighted the remarkable progress in Yemen over the past year, during which fighting has nearly ceased under a UN-mediated truce. He welcomed Saudi Arabia's extraordinary efforts to pursue a more comprehensive roadmap for ending the war and offered full U.S. support for those efforts, noting that Special Envoy Tim Lenderking will be in the region over the coming days. Mr. Sullivan and Crown Prince Salman also discussed broader trends toward de-escalation in the region, while underscoring the need to maintain deterrence against threats from Iran and elsewhere. Mr. Sullivan reaffirmed President Biden's unwavering commitment to ensure Iran can never acquire a nuclear weapon. Mr. Sullivan and Crown Prince Salman committed to stay in regular contact and to accelerate contact between the Saudi and U.S. national security teams on issues including the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII), clean energy cooperation, and development and investment in cutting-edge Open Radio Access Network (O-Ran) 5G and 6G technologies.”15:42 - Lucien's One Big Thing this week, which is the Saudi-Iran thaw. But LIV Golf, the breakaway tour that's caused a civil war within golf's ranks, scored a major victory of its own this weekend. Derided as a tour for washed-up former stars and unknowns, a money grab for has-beens and never-was'es, LIV this weekend put three players in the top 6 — Mickelson, Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed — and 12/17 players made the cut. Whatever else LIV may be, on this weekend the breakaway tour came up big. “We're still the same people,” said Koepka, who held the clubhouse lead for three rounds and three holes. “I think that's just manufactured by the media that we can't compete anymore, that we are washed up.”Hajj Minister: Makkah and Madinah now host 1.3 million foreign pilgrims and visitorsMinister of Hajj and Umrah Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah said that Makkah and Madinah are witnessing a record number of foreign pilgrims and visitors and there are currently 1.3 million in the two holy cities. “All the procedures have been improved remarkably and there is a major qualitative shift in the movement of worshipers as well as in the facilities and services being provided to them inside the Two Holy Mosques.” he said while addressing a dialogue session as part of the first edition of the Manafea Forum, which kicked off here on Monday.Middle East debt issuances nearly triple in Q1 2023 as Saudis take leadMiddle East and North Africa (MENA) debt issuances nearly tripled year-on-year from January to March 2023 to $26.9 billion compared to the previous quarter, marking the highest start to a year by proceeds since 2011. With Japan growing exponentially post war, through industry and art, the independent philosphy that the West perpetuated began to filter into the Jpaanese art world. Sōsaku hanga became increadingly popular where there is only one carver, printer and draughtsman. These prints touched on various themes, but especially in the abstract. Artists such as Shigeru Hatsuyama (1897-1973), and Kiyoshi Saitō (1907-1997) spring to mind, who created a new kind of mokuhanga by using various techniques, colours, and sizes that were unique and expressive. I've included it here, verbatim, describing how nikawa is used in nihon-ga painting, A gelatin made by boiling and extracting protein from skins and bones of animals and fish, it has long been used as an adhesive. Since the pigments used in nihonga have no adhesive strength, the use of nikawa is needed to fix them to the surface of the painting. The two types commonly used now are shika nikawa (industrially processed from cow skin, bones, and tendons) and sanzenbon (which is made by hand, of the same materials). gum arabic - is a sap from two types of Acacia tree. This was in and around 2007. While I look back at that time thinking about why I didn't take it up as seriously as I do now, I sometime wonder, "Where would I be now in my Mokuhanga journey?" For the past 1000 years since the Christian crusades into the Middle East, the crusades and crusaders have consistently been positively portrayed in Christian countries. But, since the American-British invasion of Iraq and its religious undertones, crusading has begun to lose its appeal. Let's follow this journey through the 1989 Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, with Harrison Ford and Sean Connery, the 2006 Ridley Scott film, Kingdon of Heaven, starring Orlando Bloom, and the 2018 Robin Hood starring Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx. In this special bonus episode on Productivity Mastery, Stoyan Yankov, the co-founder and co-host of The Leaders Who Care podcast and community platform, interviews Jakob Modéer, Regional Manager of the Swiss Entrepreneurship Program. Tune in and discover: ✔️ Opportunities and challenges in the Balkan region from the Western perspective, ✔️ The role of culture in the country's economy, ✔️ Why an economic system would need plurality, ✔️ Using the entrepreneurship as a vessel to massively help, ✔️ How to practically support less developed countries, and more! Swedish by origin, American/British by education, and Balkanite by marriage and life! 30+years of living, working, failing, surviving, and succeeding in southeast Europe. Factory-owner, exporter, job creator, motivator, storyteller and now, startup ecosystem supporter with the Swiss Entrepreneurship Program. Being born and raised in Sweden, a country that scores in the top 10 of any global development index, made for a wonderful and worry-free childhood. As a teenager, with restlessness with life in a society of collective conformity and completion, Jakob applied to study for a high school year in the US, which was followed by BA studies at Lewis & Clark College out in Oregon. At the American university, Jakob was struck by the openness of the discourse, the closeness of the professors and their push for well-argued cases to improve the status quo, and the equal rejection of unsupported complaining. Graduation coincided with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the rush for societal change in East Europe and the USSR. Jakob got a job in Moscow, constructing the first golf course in the USSR. The encounter with the negative effects of totalitarianism and the planned economy was eye-opening. Finding a way to operate and get a job done in a completely different culture was an incredible challenge, a learning journey that Jakob now treasures very much. Today, 30+ years later, he recognizes that those months in the Soviet capital were his watershed moment, he knew at that moment, that this is where he wanted to be – on the front lines of the re-introduction of individual freedoms, free market, and free-thinking. During the last three decades in the lands of southeast Europe aka The Balkans, Jakob has started and failed as a factory owner, succeeded as an exporter of multiple products, worked as a consultant on job creation programs, and advised national and local governments on the art of creating jobs (often in deprived geographical areas) and most recently managing a program which puts entrepreneurs first, as the primary change agents, in a transitional society. The Friday Newsletter | Daily Gardener Community Historical Events 1621 Birth of Andrew Marvell, English poet and politician. He was a friend of John Milton. In addition to writing The Garden - one of the most famous English poems of the seventeenth century - he wrote this little garden verse: I have a garden of my own But so with Roses overgrown And Lilies, that you would it guess To be a little wilderness. 1824 Birth of Dietrich Brandis, German forester and botanist. He's remembered as the Father of Forestry in India, the Father of Modern Forest Management, and the Father of Tropical Forestry. Concerned about the unregulated destruction of the forests in India, the British wanted people in India to help manage and protect the trees. In 1856, Dietrich left his botany professorship in Bonn (where his father had been a professor) for a civil service position managing the teak forests in Burma. Eight years later, Dietrich was in charge of all the forests in India. In Carl Alwin Schenck's Birth of Forestry in America, there's a fascinating story about how Deitrich inventoried the Teak trees in the forest. [He rode] an elephant, on such trails as there were, with four sticks in his left hand and a pocketknife in his right. Whenever he saw in the bamboo thickets a teak tree within two hundred feet of his trail, he cut a notch in stick number 1, 2, 3, or 4, denoting the diameter of the tree. It was impossible for European hands, dripping with moisture, to carry a notebook. At the end of the day, after traveling some twenty miles, Brandis had collected forest stand data for a sample plot four hundred feet wide and twenty miles long, containing some nineteen hundred acres. He continued his cruise for a number of months, sick with malaria in a hellish climate. Moreover, he underwent a trepanning operation (brian surgery), and for the rest of his life, he carried a small hole filled with white cotton in the front of his skull. But he emerged from the cruise with the knowledge needed for his great enterprise. Dietrich established modern "sustainable" agroforestry principles that are still followed today. For two decades, Dietrich measured, itemized, and chronicled the forests of India. He started forest management schools and created training protocols for his employees. In 1878, Deitrich founded the Forest Research Institute in the Doon Valley in Dehradun. Styled in Greco Roman architecture, the building is beautiful and is the largest purely brick structure in the world. Sir Joseph Hooker recognized Deitrich's work and named the flowering-plant genus Brandisia in his honor. 1848 Birth of William Waldorf Astor, American-British attorney, politician, businessman (hotels and newspapers), and philanthropist. In 1891, a tall, shy William Waldorf Astor moved to Britain after declaring that "America is not a fit place for a gentleman to live." After over a decade living in England, William bought a run-down double-moated Hever Castle, which was Anne Boleyn's family home four hundred years earlier. Between 1904 and 1908, William oversaw the installation of the extensive gardens designed by Frank Pearson to surround the castle. William diverted water from a nearby river to make a 35-acre lake to make his vision a reality. It is said that eight hundred men hand-dug and stomped on the clay soil to make the bottom of the lake. Mature trees were harvested from Ashdown Forest and transplanted at Hever. Two mazes were installed. Topiary chessmen were pruned for the chess garden. Thousands of roses were brought in for the rose garden. But, the most impressive Garden at Hever was and is the Italian Garden, which features colonnades, classical sculptures, antiquities dating back to Roman times, and a loggia. There's also a long pergola on one end that features cool dripping fountains the entire length. Even today, it's staggering to think the whole project was completed in four short years. 1924 Birth of Leo Buscaglia, American author, motivational speaker, and professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Southern California. Leo believed education should be the process of helping everyone to discover his uniqueness. Leo learned to Garden from his father, and he once wrote, To this day I cannot see a bright daffodil, a proud gladiola, or a smooth eggplant without thinking of Papa. Like his plants and trees, I grew up as a part of his garden. Leo was a self-help guru who preached love so much that he became known as "Dr. Love." He once wrote, A single rose can be my garden; a single friend, my world. He also wrote, There are many miracles in the world to be celebrated and, for me, garlic is the most deserving. Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation Passions by Carolyne Roehm This book came out in 2021 at the end of the year in December, and this is actually a collection of three books. All three books feature Carolyn's passions: flowers and gardens, feminine touch (which is all about how Carolyn loves to decorate), and furry friends, which of course, shares Carolyn's love of animals, especially her pups. I have to say that I love the book sleeve for these books slip into because the artwork is reminiscent of Maria Sibylla Merian. Carolyn writes, I hope that this little trio of books about the joy that I found in flowers and gardening, feminine allure and feminine style and the love of furry friends delights and inspires you as it has me. When I think about this book set, I think about it like a gift - a little book set to gift - so if you're looking for something special for yourself or a friend, this little set of books should be at the top of your list. The photography in all of these little books is absolutely stunning; it's all Carolyn Roehm. If you're a Carolyn Roehm fan, if you love her home in Connecticut or if you've watched any of her styling videos on YouTube, then you will immediately recognize the deeply saturated hues and the stunning compositions that she puts together with flowers and exquisite objects in her home. The balance of color, form, and architecture - all the incredible details that she pulls together - is just drop-dead gorgeous. Botanic Spark 1962 On this day, a landscape worker hit a line connecting President Kennedy's White House to the Strategic Arms Command, the line vital to launching a nuclear attack. The project was led by Bunny Mellon, who was in charge of designing a new rose garden outside the President's office. Robert Kennedy once reflected on Bunny in the Garden, saying, Often during cabinet meetings, we would see her out there in the rose garden – a little figure with a bandana on her head. One of Bunny's first tasks was to find a gardener to implement her designs. She selected a man named Irvin Williams, who was a government gardener at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. After Bunny brought him to the White House, he would stay on as the head gardener for almost fifty years. In early talks for the rose garden redesign, the Park Department voiced concerns about hitting underground lines. Bunny's plan called for large magnolia trees, which after some debate, were eventually ordered. But on this day, the underground line was cut during ground preparation. Bunny recalled that the problem was handled calmly and that she was never reprimanded. Bunny found the perfect magnolia trees for the White House over by the Tidal Basin overlooking the Jefferson Memorial. Once again, the Parks Department said "no" (due to costs). But Irvin Williams supported Bunny's idea, and he made arrangements to have the trees brought to the White House. The roses included a yellow rose from the state of Texas called the Speaker Sam rose in honor of the late speaker of the House Sam Rayburn, a bright red variety from the World's Fair, a white rose name Frau Karl Druschki, and pink Doctor roses. Twenty-four days after the underground line was hit, the Garden, complete with magnolia trees and roses, was unveiled to the public. The updated rose garden was an instant success. The artist and friend of the Kennedys, William Walton, later wrote, [President Kennedy's] pleasure in that garden was infinite. Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, Garden every day.

Matt Marvel explores stories of mixed American/British heritage children dubbed ‘Brown Babies' and discovers how DNA technology is helping them find long lost families. In January 1942 thousands of American troops arrived in the UK to join World War Two. A large contingent of black American GI's formed part of that deployment. Racial segregation was still part of life in the US at the time, and as such these men were not sent to the front line but helped build bases as part of the war effort. Some of these men conceived children while they were in the UK, but when this was discovered by their superior officers, they were transferred elsewhere. This is the story of the children left behind. Host / Producer: Matt Marvel Senior Producer: Ollie Peart Executive Producer: Kathryn Morrison

The British government of the 1760s couldn't complain that nobody had warned it of the catastrophic consequences of trying to inflict taxes on the American colonists, without their consent. 'American' was increasingly the right word for them, as various forces, including non-English immigration, began to change the nature of the population. Even so, they remained for the most part wedded to their British roots. Their anger at the government's behaviour wasn't just a rejection of British highhandedness. On the contrary, many of them spoke out as Brits against Britain's trampling on long-established British rights they saw themselves as defending. It wasn't just the American-British of the colonies speaking out. There were voices in Britain itself defending their cause. One of the more remarkable was that of self-made soldier and MP, Isaac Barré. An interesting man to get to know, as we do in this episode. Released on the 6th day of the 6th month in the year 1976, the week The Wurzels ‘Combine Harvester', became number one in the UK (coincidence?)...The Omen, which was originally considered by Warner Bros, who thought it might be ideal for Oliver Reed, is an American-British supernatural horror film directed by Richard Donner, written by David Seltzer, and eventually starred Gregory Peck, Lee Remick and David Warner. One of Richard Donner's first requests to screenwriter Seltzer was to remove all suggestions of the supernatural, such as cloven-hoofed demons and witches' covens. The idea was that there should be some degree of doubt over whether or not Thorn was deranged. The films follows Damien Thorn, a young child replaced at birth by an American ambassador unbeknownst to his wife, after their biological child dies shortly after birth. As a series of mysterious events and violent deaths occur around the family and Damien enters childhood, they come to learn he is in fact the prophesied Antichrist. The Omen received mixed reviews from critics but was a commercial success, grossing over $60 million at the U.S. box office and becoming one of the highest-grossing films of the year. The film earned two Oscar nominations, and won for Best Original Score for Jerry Goldsmith, his only Oscar win. The film spawned a franchise, starting with Damien: Omen II, released two years later, followed by a third installment, Omen III: The Final Conflict, in 1981, and in 1991 with Omen IV: The Awakening. With the end of the war and the defeat of Nazi Germany, the Allied armies were confronted with one of the byproducts of the Nazi regime - millions of 'displaced persons', many of whom had nowhere to go, and some of whom were Jewish survivors of the Nazi Holocaust. Eventually Displaced Persons camps were established under the auspices of the American & British militaries in their spheres of influence in Germany, Austria and Italy. Theser were in turn later overseen by the newly established agency UNRAA which was soon followed by the IRO (International Refugee Organization). The unique situation of the Jewish survivors was recognized by the Harrison Report, and a flourishing of Jewish cultural, social, educational and religious life ensued. The Sh'eris Ha-pleita was an organization founded by the survivors themselves to provide the needs of rehabilitation in the post trauma atmosphere following liberation. Various outside organizations assisted with funding and infrastructure while some also competed for the political allegiance of the survivors. Looking to the future many survivors endeavored to marry and start families, while at the same time engaged in commemoration and testimony of the recent events they had experienced. Share with the audience a little bit about who you are, and why you're on the journey that you're in right now. The truth is this. I'm your classic bullied kid that turned out when she went back to her high school reunion that I was actually the bully. So I'm the reformed bully, whereby I really got to see that creating laughter as the school bully or the class clown that I was because I had a lot of stuff going on at home that I was bringing to the table. There was a lot of stuff going on personally, where making other people laugh, made me feel really, really good. That line of comedy and tragedy, I walked my whole life. I was a really, really big kid. And in order to get anybody to give me attention, I had to be the funny kid. And typically the funny kid can actually be the bully. So that's really my talk. My conversation and my journey was the emancipation of your high school class clown. It's a shift in perspective. Where, really, laughter is the best medicine. And you teach this laughter all over the world. I know you've been on some big stages, not only here in the United States, but internationally, so talk about that. I am my own worst bully. Because imagine, if you're the bully in school, who do you think else you're bullying? You're pulling yourself all day. Us comedians bully ourselves. It's like this rat race. So as my career was getting better and better, it took me a long time to look back and say, hey, Mona, you've done Carnegie Hall in less than a decade, kid. How about you tone down all your self hate? How many of us are super successful and still like I can't believe it. Where did you grew up Mona? I grew up in Chicago. I grew up by Wrigley. I have a Palestinian father who's immigrant came in 71. I have an American British mother and my grandmother immigrated after World War II from the United Kingdom. That was back when Arabs were like the hippies. My pops was in the 70s with this big Afro. And my mom's like he's super cute. So like me understanding my own identity where my Grandmother has a British accent. And my other grandmother is Palestinian like literally from the motherland. And I'm their translator because they don't speak the same language. How did you get into comedy? It was one Christmas Day. I had come back from Namibia finishing my thesis in late 20s. And my family said you need to be a comedian. My family said, listen, you're working so hard to entertain us. You need to be a comedian. I said, I just got my masters. The way they came at me was as if it was like a confessional. But that was the best journey of my life because I really did a deep dive into intellect because my first reaction was like, I'm not going to be comedian. They're dumb. Turns out, it's the exact opposite. Your comedian is your modern day philosopher, court jester, celebrity, teacher, reporter. So you have to know a lot about a lot of things. I know you have a really strong belief about comedy in our culture today. And more importantly, comedy as it really relates to our health. Can you tell us more? Tip #1 - The three tips that I would give anybody, right now, if they're listening to it, the most important rule in comedy is “yes and.” So whatever you're dealing with, lean into it. If you just got into a car accident, “yes and.” How was this car accident here to serve me? Right? So whatever's going on in your world, if you allow that the world isn't happening to you, it's happening for you. And you just have to add, these are principles of comedy. And these are principles of self-development. Tip #2 - The second would be a perspective exercise. Which is everything makes sense from the other person's perspective. What is that perspective? And how is noticing that gap in difference important? For example, when I walk into a comedy club, I walk in early and I evaluate my environment. Where's the waitress staff, what's going on with that? Has the lighting been set up in my environment? What is my environment? Understanding how they interpret me. As an American comedian, who has an English accent and my type of accent? What data are they assuming is true? Based on me walking on stage? Tip #3 - And third, is going to sound totally counter to number one, but third is the power of no. Being able to be like no, these are my boundaries. Then you can have you have control of the mic, you have control of your voice. And that's why when I teach these comedy classes for kids because if you can navigate society by being able to say Yes, and make fun of yourself, understand how they're seeing you, and how you're seeing yourself and able to say, No, no one's ever gonna mess with your mind. I work on a lot of spiritual, acupuncture meditative and the comedy classes that I teach like this perspective, exercise is taught at the University of Chicago level. This is a project that I'm currently in three year project where we're teaching physicians, the art of standup comedy, as a modality to navigate society, racism, income disparities, because when a white doctor walks in looking just like you, Christie with a lab coat, and there is an African American man, that's 80 years old, he is existing in a conversation that's tied to civil rights. So he might feel some type of way when you walk in, or you might be like, this is a black man, I don't want to I don't really don't want to insult him in any way, understanding some of the principles of comedy allows that to navigate much more holistically. And that's the project we're working on. Mona's Free Gift: I'd like to offer a 90-minute workshop which I'll have the information on when that live class is going to be. It's a 90-minute class clowns workshop. It's the same workshop, whether it's kids in high school for veterans, those old timers or in corporate America, where I've been doing a dual development model for corporate training, team building. A lot of these same principles go into all that training modality. So offering a 90-minute course. I might have comedian friends coming in and out of the background, in and out from different countries. You never know. We've offered that and then it will be also recorded and available for consumption. So we'll have that recording available.
