sent $$$ this week to Sustainable Economies Law Center’s Coopalooza .theselc.org“Our vision is to redistribute wealth and power and dismantle the oppressive dominant economic system by creating more worker controlled enterprises.Hierarchies keep power and assets in the hands of a privileged few and proliferate organizational and societal injustices, inequities, and disempowered workers. Concentrated power is the bane of democracy. Hierarchies fail to use the creativity and wisdom of workers close to the problems, to deliver fair and equitable solutions and create right relationships. The solution is to democratize every workplace for every worker. Democratic workplaces build community well-being and transform local economies by putting power over decisions and assets into the hands of workers.Sustainable Economies Law Center’s Labor team provides education, advocacy, research, and legal advice to workers democratizing the places where they work. All month, we’re inviting our friends, neighbors, community members, and partners to support our grassroots fundraising campaign. Our goal is to raise $20,000 by the end of September to support our work democratizing workplaces everywhere. Suraj speaks with Amirtha Kidambi about her work as a singer, musician, bandleader, and composer in the creative music/avant-garde scene in NYC. Amirtha talks about how her upbringing as a first-generation Indian-American affects her artistic process, how she (and other musicians) arrived at the term “creative music” to describe the music she sings/plays, and how colonization has had an adverse impact on fully experiencing music. Also, FYI, Amirtha is Suraj’s second cousin! For subscribers on podcast apps, see additional show notes and links on the AIAIF website! Link below.Because this week’s episode is a little more “in the weeds” on topics like modern jazz and experimental film, I’ve made a more extensive list of show notes. Amirtha was talking about so much great artistic material — a lot of artists and works that I didn’t know — and I just HAD to include it all in the episode! Show Notes and Links: Amirtha Kidambi’s website — Lots of great videos and links to her work here, HIGHLY RECOMMENDAmirtha’s albums with her band, Elder Ones — “Holy Science” (2019) and “From Untruth” (2018)Amirtha Kidambi & Lea Bertucci’s “End of Softness” (2020)Mary Halverson’s “Code Girl” (2018) — Amirtha is a member of this band!Understanding the concept of Indian “Raag”NY Times obituary of Kadri Gopalnath, Indian alto-saxophonist — There’s a wonderful video of Mr. Gopalnath’s music that is a great introduction to the music Amirtha discusses in the episodeOrnette Coleman’s “Free Jazz” (1961)John Coltrane’s “Impulse! Records” Discography — Every one of the albums is worth listening to, with “A Love Supreme” (1964) and “Duke Ellington and John Coltrane” (1962) being two great starting points, in my opinion. Pitchfork review of Albert Ayler’s “Spiritual Unity” (1964)Lydia Goehr’s “The Imaginary Museum of Musical Works” (1992)NY Times obituary of Fred Ho, Asian-American composer and musician — Another obit that I think is a good jumping-off point for discovering of Mr. Ho’s music.George E. Amirtha and I discuss the paradoxes of the word “accessible” when referring to music in the episode, but if you want to hear Iyer sticking to a more recognizable harmonic palate, check out his album “Accelerando” (2012). He does a version of Michael Jackson’s “Human Nature” that is groovy beyond belief.Alice Coltrane’s recording of the “Sai Bhajan,” “Prema Mudhita” and her albums “A Monastic Trio” (1968) and “Journey in Satchidananda” (1971)Website of Ravi Coltrane, Alice and John’s son, a current jazz saxophonistSuneil Sanzgiri’s website — filmmaker that Amirtha collaborated with on two film scoresIndian film director Satyajit Ray’s “Apu Trilogy” in the Criterion Collection, Roger Ebert’s review of the trilogy, and an interview with RayAn article from Vox on Iranian film director Abbas Kiarostami and a link to “Taste of Cherry” (1997) in the Criterion CollectionAn article on Charlie Chaplin filming “Modern Times” (1936)Robert Bresson’s “Pickpocket” (1959) Get on the email list at artinallitsforms.substack.com

Rachel is snow-blind and annoyed! So only one thing is new. But also, there’s lots of jazz, country, and rock in this week’s episode -- just a fun smorgasbord of everything! Album of the Week: Mary Halvorson -- Code Girl   I don’t know enough about jazz to say anything educated about this album. But from the perspective of someone who’s into guitar-based music, Halvorson is incredible. She can shred as hard as any hair metal band, but chooses her moments of maximalism carefully. Code Girl is a brief visit into a universe with epic vistas and narrow windows. And if you’ve been listening to rock’n’roll for any period of time, you’ll appreciate a jazz take on the old “I’m sick of touring” song.   While you’re here, check out this list of Caribbean country music from Holler.   Huge thanks to Podcorn for sponsoring this episode.

He’s made five studio albums and one live album, all but one of them for Blue Note. He’s also recorded with Walter Smith III, with Archie Shepp, with Mary Halvorson as part of her group Code Girl, with Tarbaby, with Roscoe Mitchell, and he’s on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly. His latest album, On the Tender Spot of Every Calloused Moment, is one of the best jazz records of 2020. I saw him perform the music at Winter Jazzfest in January of this year, which as you’ll hear in our conversation was actually something like a live rehearsal, because they went into the studio and recorded the album the day after the show. We talked about a whole range of subjects in this interview, I’m not even sure how to preface it all. We discuss his style on the trumpet, which is a little bit unorthodox and to my ear demonstrates a real mastery of the horn; we talk about each of his albums, including why he has occasionally taken several years off in between; we talk about political engagement and how his own life impacts the music he makes; and a whole lot more. I had a really good time talking to him, and I hope you’ll enjoy listening to our conversation. Episode SummaryExperimental musician Mary Halvorson shares her story of how a practical person made the impractical leap to pursue a music career when she met a truly inspiring teacher in college. Mary discusses creating music that is out of the mainstream, finding acceptance by going her own way, and how receiving the prestigious MacArthur Grant has impacted her life. Syd and Mary talk leadership, women in music, quarantine, and more, in this episode of The Sydcast.Syd FinkelsteinSyd Finkelstein is the Steven Roth Professor of Management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. He holds a Master's degree from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. Professor Finkelstein has published 25 books and 90 articles, including the bestsellers Why Smart Executives Fail and Superbosses: How Exceptional Leaders Master the Flow of Talent, which LinkedIn Chairman Reid Hoffman calls the “leadership guide for the Networked Age.” He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Management, a consultant and speaker to leading companies around the world, and a top 25 on the global Thinkers 50 list of top management gurus. Mary HalvorsonGuitarist and composer Mary Halvorson has been described as “a singular talent” (Lloyd Sachs, JazzTimes), ”NYC's least-predictable improviser” (Howard Mandel, City Arts), “one of the most exciting and original guitarists in jazz—or otherwise” (Steve Dollar, Wall Street Journal), and “one of today's most formidable bandleaders” (Francis Davis, Village Voice). In recent Downbeat Critics Polls, Halvorson has been celebrated as a guitarist, rising star jazz artist, and rising star composer of the year, and in 2019 she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship.Halvorson has released a series of critically acclaimed albums on the Firehouse 12 label, from Dragon's Head (2008), her trio debut featuring bassist John Hébert and drummer Ches Smith, expanding to a quintet with trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson and alto saxophonist Jon Irabagon on Saturn Sings (2010) and Bending Bridges (2012), a septet with tenor saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and trombonist Jacob Garchik on Illusionary Sea (2014), and finally an octet with pedal steel guitarist Susan Alcorn on Away With You (2016). She also released the solo recording Meltframe (2015) and most recently debuted Code Girl (2018), a new ensemble featuring vocalist Amirtha Kidambi (singing Halvorson's own lyrics), trumpeter Adam O'Farrill, saxophonist/ vocalist Maria Grand, bassist Michael Formanek, and drummer Tomas Fujiwara. One of New York City's most in-demand guitarists, over the past decade Halvorson has worked with such diverse musicians as Tim Berne, Anthony Braxton, Taylor Ho Bynum, John Dieterich, Trevor Dunn, Bill Frisell, Ingrid Laubrock, Jason Moran, Joe Morris, Tom Rainey, Jessica Pavone, Tomeka Reid, Marc Ribot, and John Zorn. She is also part of several collaborative projects, most notably the longstanding trio Thumbscrew with Michael Formanek on bass and Tomas Fujiwara on drums.Insights from this episode:The benefits of studying musical traditions to build your own strong musical foundation.Reasons why you should play different types and styles of music to enhance and further your career.Differences between listening to music through a streaming service versus on a CD or vinyl album and the impact of listening to only one song versus an entire album. How to find a balance between instinct and editing when creating music.Benefits of performing music live that can not be achieved through streaming concerts. There were so many more possibilities.” – Mary Halvorson“I think there's a misconception that people who play experimental music only like experimental music or can't play other types of music and vice versa. I've found that that's often not the case.” – Mary Halvorson“I think of an academic career as an entrepreneurial career where you can always try something new if you want to try something new.” – Syd Finkelstein“We know, in so many walks of life, narrative flow and storytelling is everything.” – Syd Finkelstein“I've always found it un-intuitive to have music and then put lyrics in later.” – Mary Halvorson“I'm just writing music that I find exciting or that I think is beautiful or that I like and I think that tends to be a little bit left of center.” – Mary Halvorson“I'm very lucky to do music that I believe in.” – Mary Halvorson“What I've realized during this [quarantine] period is there's no substitute for live music. Doing live-stream performances is not a substitute for live music.” – Mary HalvorsonOn what advice Mary would give to her younger self: “Take your time with things and make sure to do things thoroughly … get really deep into something.” – Mary Halvorson“I think focusing on the process and not the end result is also a good thing to think about.” – Mary HalvorsonStay Connected: Syd FinkelsteinWebsite: http://thesydcast.comLinkedIn: Sydney FinkelsteinTwitter: @sydfinkelsteinFacebook: The SydcastInstagram: The SydcastMary HalvorsonWebsite: www.maryhalvorson.comSpotify: Mary HalvorsonYouTube Music: Mary HalvorsonFacebook: Mary HalvorsonSubscribe to our podcast + download each episode on Stitcher, iTunes, and Spotify. This episode was produced and managed by Podcast Laundry (www.podcastlaundry.com)
