Twirling Candy is following in his father's legendary footsteps at Lane's End Farm. A son of Candy Ride (Arg), Twirling Candy has sired 21 graded stakes winners, seven millionaires, and nine Grade 1 winners. In 2024, he added new G1 winner Iscreamuscream, winner of the Del Mar Oaks (G1) and the San Clemente H. (G2). Other 2024 GSWs include Ag Bullet (G2, G1 placed), Walkathon (G3), Two Sharp (G3), and Where's My Ring (G3).His 2023 GSWs include: G1 winner Exaulted, millionaire Gear Jockey, Evvie Jets and Dream Shake. 2023 also proved to be a great year for his two-year-olds, with 26 winners, including black type winners Where's Chris and Move to Gold. This success on the track was reflected in the sales ring. His yearling average increased to $160,064 and had seven-figure yearling and two-year-old sales.Twirling Candy is out of the Chester House mare House of Danzig, making him a half-sibling to G2 winner Ethnic Dance. Multiple Champion Affirmed can be found farther down his page. Candy Ride has already shown a remarkable affinity for the Storm Cat branch of the Northern Dancer line. Other branches of the Northern Dancer line to provide the dams of Candy Ride stakes winners are Sadler's Wells (sire of El Prado; grandsire of Medaglia d'Oro and Kitten's Joy), Nureyev (from a mare by Theatrical), Danzig and Dixieland Band. Candy Ride has found success with a wide variety of mares by stallions that descend from the Nasrullah line, with three stakes winners from mares by In Excess, as well as stakes winners out of mares by In Excess's son, Indian Charlie, and Cozzene. Candy Ride is out of a Mr. Prospector-line mare, and Twirling Candy should cross well over mares from that line.(UPDATED FEB 1, 2025)

Amantes? Our hosts David Graver and Indrani Pal-Chaudhuri are delighted to chat with the brilliant Julian MacKay, the first American to graduate from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy with a full Russian Diploma having completed both the upper and lower school, and Principal Dancer at The Bayerisches Staatsballett. Graduating in the top of his class, he was hailed as "Apollo" and the next Nureyev by Russian dance critics. In this episode of The Accutron Show, Julian talks about his experience, upbringing and the challenges (as well as successes) to keep ballet interesting. He also discusses engaging with young audiences in today's world that is dominated by technology. Tune in and dance this episode away with us. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS11:00 The approach and perceptions on the classical arts is changing. My goal is to make sure that someone my age is excited about the ballet experience. It has a lot to do with the stories we tell, the way we tell them, the people that are represented on stage and who those people are marketed and shown to. 22:43 The beauty and challenge of ballet today is how to bring into modern times characters and stories that were written and conceived centuries ago. As a dancer, I have to understand the original character and how that character would behave today. For example Cinderella, if I am to play the prince, I have to ask myself how would a prince treat a woman today? 29:40 When you take a different approach, rather than the doom and gloom and you put in something beautiful and say "Hey, we are going to create hope and inspire a generation to sort this out," it can lead to something that is unexpected. Because dance and ballet communicate in a way that is even more powerful than words sometimes.

Welcome to our Russian Nationals recap episodes! This week, Men and Ice Dance brought the big drama, as we have a (wonderful!) somewhat-surprise Men's gold medalist in Mark Kondratiuk, and a celebration that the Backstreet Boys, Justin Bieber, and Shawn Mendez (and Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin) will likely be going to the Olympics together. We again wondered where J-Lo was in Mikhail Kolyada's SP, but were very happy to see the return of Nureyev in his FS. The mystery intensified about Dmitri Aliev's vague statements, but we wish him well as we move into the second half of the season. In the Ice Dance event, we talked about Russian athletes vs Russian officials and the absolute cluster the latter creates, and talked about teams with Good Packaging vs teams with Needs to be Improved Packaging.Timestamps:(00:00) - Intro(01:24) - News (Dmitri Soloveiv, vaccinations)(04:06) - ICE DANCE(05:05) - Tiffany Zahorski & Jonathan Guerreiro (Тиффани Загорски & Джонатан Гуейро)(11:06) - Anastasia Skoptsova & Kirill Alëshin (Анастасия Скопцова & Кирилл Алёшин)(12:54) - Elizaveta Shanaeva & Devid Naryzhnyy (Елизавета Шанаева & Дэвид Нарижный)(14:07) - Annabelle Morozov & Andrei Bagin (Аннабель Морозов & Андрей Багин)(17:55) - Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva & Egor Bazin (Елизавета Худайбердиева & Егор Базин)(20:50) - Diana Davis & Gleb Smolkin (Диана Дэвис & Глеб Смолкин)(25:39) - Aleksandra Stepanova & Ivan Bukin (Александра Степанова & Иван Букин)(29:53) - Victoria Sinitsina & Nikita Katsalapov (Викториа Синицина & Никита Катсалапов)(33:23) - MEN(34:00) - Makar Ignatov (Макар Игнатов)(36:56) - Dmitri Aliev (Дмитрий Алиев)(40:29) - Gleb Lutfullin (Глев Лутфулин)(42:28) - Alexei Erokhov (Алексей Ерохов)(46:32) - Alexander Samarin (Александр Самарин)(49:30) - Pëtr Gumennik (Пётр Гуменник)(52:16) - Evgeni Semenenko (Евгений Семененко)(56:27) - Andrei Mozalëv (Андрей Мозалёв)(58:50) - Mikhail Kolyada (Михаил Коляда)(1:03:19) - Mark Kondratiuk (Марк Кондратюк)(1:08:45) - Kiss & Cry Segment - Team announcements and discussion(1:12:54) - Outro------------------------------------------------Follow our figure skating podcast on:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lutzgetdownpod/   Twitter: https://twitter.com/lutzgetdownpod And to work with us please contact lutzgetdownpod@gmail.com Logo design by @dezisartvibes on Instagramxx Joce & Clauds

A Body's Language

On the first episode of the second season of 'A Body's Language' we speak to David McAllister. This episode was recorded late last year, in Davids final week as director of The Australian Ballet Company.David shares stories about his dancing days with The  Australian Ballet, working with the likes of Nureyev and Glen Tetley, speaks about pieces of music still make him feel sick with nerves and provides great insights into his philosophies on directorship- reflecting on how The Australian Ballet chose to prioritize the mental health of their dancers during the pandemic while maintaining their world leading physical healthcare program.A graduate of The Australian Ballet School, Perth-born David McAllister began his training with Evelyn Hodgkinson and joined The Australian Ballet in 1983. He was promoted to senior artist in 1986 and to principal artist in January 1989.During his time with the company, he danced many principal roles, including those in The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, Coppélia, Manon, La Sylphide, John Cranko's Onegin and Romeo and Juliet, and Jiří Kylián's Stepping Stones; in 1985 he won Bronze at the Fifth International Ballet Competition in Moscow.Throughout his career, David made numerous guest appearances worldwide, dancing with Bolshoi Ballet, the Kirov Ballet, the Georgian State Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Singapore Dance Theatre and, in 1992, as part of a Royal Gala performance in London in the presence of the Princess of Wales. In 2000, he completed a Graduate Diploma in Arts and Entertainment Management and in 2001, took his final bow as a dancer after a performance of Albrecht in Giselle at the Sydney Opera House, partnering Miranda Coney. In July of that year, David became artistic director of The Australian Ballet. He was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2004 Australia Day Honours List.Over the next two decades, on his way to becoming The Australian Ballet's longest-serving artistic director, David invigorated the company's repertoire with a series of new commissions from the world's foremost choreographers, including Alexei Ratmansky, Graeme Murphy and Wayne McGregor. He appointed two new resident choreographers, Tim Harbour and Alice Topp, and, through co-productions with leading international companies, secured major works such as Christopher Wheeldon's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland© and Yuri Possokhov's Anna Karenina. As a director/choreographer, he gifted the company with a lavish and widely acclaimed new production of The Sleeping Beauty, funded largely through donations from philanthropic supporters, and three works in the Storytime Ballet series, made especially for young children.Since stepping down as director in January of 2021, David has created a new 'Swan Lake' for Finnish National Ballet, is currently staging Lucas Jervies 'Spartacus', created for The Australian Ballet in 2018 and is in high demand as a guest teacher and choreographer in Australia and abroad.

This week on 5.6.7.EIGHT, Aleksandra speaks with Gil Boggs, Artistic Director at Colorado Ballet. Boggs began his career with the Atlanta Ballet before joining American Ballet Theatre, where he served a remarkable 17-year tenure. Boggs has also performed with the Twyla Tharp Dance Company, Baryshnikov and Company, Nureyev and Friends, and has made several guest appearances around the world. Boggs has also presented 15 world premieres and 15 Colorado Ballet premieres by renowned choreographers such as Twyla Tharp and Lar Lubovitch. From the outset, Gil has been in love the state of Colorado. Having lived and worked in the New York City area for decades, a move to America's heartland was a welcome change. However, from the outset, Gil had to overcome some serious hurdles — not the least of which was leading the company out of its financial struggle. But, because of some grit and determination, Gil did just that. On the podcast, he tells his whole story, including dancing with some of the world's brightest and best, being in a single company for 17 years, and more.    Moving Quotes: "With my staff, we are nurturing dancers. We're not telling them what's wrong and that you have to do this and you have to do that. We are collaborating with these people and getting the best out of them." "People ask me, 'What does it take to get into a company?' You have to be confident. You have to show confidence in yourself... And find inspiration in what you're doing, and you'll grow quickly." [On dancing with American Ballet Theatre] "The choreographers that came through. The rep that came in. It was all so inspiring. And I was able to grow as an artist there." "Over time, I want to see dancers maintain their integrity to the artform. There's a way you go about training yourself, learning a ballet, and performing a ballet. And I'd hate to see people deviate from that form and do it halfway."   Bullet Points (w/ timestamps) - Highlighting key topics discussed: 3:15: Gil discusses his current position as Artistic Director at Colorado Ballet and how he came to join the company. 8:14: Gil explains his earliest moves at the helm of Colorado Ballet and how he turned the company from financial struggle to thriving business, even during a recession. 13:02: Boggs, who took some financial risks early in his time as artistic director, discusses why he decided to “roll the dice” on performing some lesser known works. 14:20: Gil describes some of his earliest hurdles as artistic director and how he overcame. 16:38: Boggs explains why he decided to stay at American Ballet Theatre for so much of his career — a 17-year-long tenure. 20:30: Boggs shares some advice for aspiring dancers that are currently plotting their career paths. 22:59: Gil, who has danced underneath some of the world's best, describes his experience learning from Mikhael Baryshnikov and Twyla Tharp.  25:17: Boggs shares his perspective on how ballet is changing and why certain aspects of the art must remain intact. 26:33: Gil discusses what's next for his company and his eagerness to return to the stage once again. 28:51: Gil shares some extremely practical advice for anyone looking to make a career inside of the world of dance.   Bullet List of Resources –  Gil Boggs LinkedIn Bio on ColoradoBallet.org Colorado Ballet Company Website Instagram Twitter Facebook YouTube

From the moment the seven-year-old Rudolf Nureyev saw a ballet on stage in his local theatre, he lived and breathed dance. That overwhelming desire to be on stage carried him throughout his life – from his student days in Leningrad to his defection to the West in a blaze of publicity, from theatres around the world to his final curtain in 1992 when his gaunt body was ravaged by Aids. He made good on his promise: “the main thing is dancing, and before it withers away from my body, I will keep dancing till the last moment, the last drop.” In a career spanning more than three decades, he brought new audiences to ballet, and gave new meaning to the role of male dancers. He was a pin-up, a performer whose stage presence and artistry was so mesmerising that those who saw him perform in the 1960s have never forgotten the experience. His leaps defied gravity; he gave the impression of floating through the air. But his demands for perfection could make him a difficult person to be with. His temper was as legendary as his dancing. Bridget Kendall explores how Nureyev's commitment to transcend his childhood in grinding poverty made him one of the world's most celebrated dancers, with writer Julie Kavanagh, author of Rudolf Nureyev: The Life; writer and translator, Irina Klyagin, who looks after Harvard University's extensive theatre collection and specialises in Russian ballet; and Thierry Fouquet, vice chair of the board of trustees of the Rudolf Nureyev Foundation who worked with Nureyev during his time at the Paris opera, the home of France's leading ballet company. Juno and Nureyev know exactly what they must do to board that train. He arrived in the night: Peter Nureyev, the burglar who got away, the thief Juno Steel couldn’t catch. Until he returned, things had been so simple: solving crimes, chasing a killer with her eye on Ancient Martian artifacts, and not letting personal business get in the way. With Nureyev, though, things always seem to get personal very quickly. But Juno has no choice. Nureyev’s the only one with a lead on the killer Juno’s after. He knows exactly what she plans to take next, and according to him it’s something very big, and very dangerous. According to Nureyev, anyway. But the question remains: can Juno trust Peter Nureyev? Dame Monica Mason has spent all of her working life at the Royal Ballet in London. Now 70 she is about to start her final season as Director of the Royal Ballet. In conversation with Norman Lebrecht she talks frankly and warmly of the experiences her various roles in the company have given her. Born in South Africa she first encountered ballet in Johannesburg and began to dance. After the sudden death of her father when she was just 13 she tells Norman how her mother brought her to London where they lived frugally in a bedsit in Finsbury Park. Monica got a place at the Royal Ballet School and then unexpectedly was put in the company. Here she immediately encountered some of the great figures in international ballet whom she talks about in this interview.. The founder of the Royal Ballet was Dame Ninette de Valois who was then at the helm and a figure who fought for the company throughout the war years but who inspired fear in many. Frederick Ashton was the founder choreographer of the company and later held the post of Artistic Director. Monica Mason tells of dancing in his full length ballet Ondine to music by Henze which he found difficult to work to, but generally she was not one of his favourite dancers. Monica also talks about Margot Fonteyn who for many years danced many of the best roles and continued past the normal age when dancers retire partly due to the arrival of Rudolf Nureyev with whom she formed a memorable partnership. Mason also talks of dancing with Nureyev herself. She found a more direct working partnership with Ashton's successor Kenneth Macmillan who built his version of Rite of Spring around her . Macmillan was a troubled man subject to dark moods who, when he discovered Monica was considering leaving as her dancing years came to an end, persuaded her to stay as his assistant. She agreed and worked closely with him and was there when he died suddenly backstage during an evening performance. Monica Mason remained during the difficult years of the 90s when the Royal Opera House went through a troubled period, continuing as assistant to Norman Morrice, Anthony Dowell and then Ross Stretton. And it was only after Stretton's sudden dismissal that she went into the role of Director herself, at first she thought, on a temporary basis. Soon after she was offered the job. She reflects on her experiences as Director and how she has tried to move the company on, appointing Wayne McGregor as resident choreographer and commissioning a new full length ballet from Christopher Wheeldon. Producer Tony Cheevers.

It's difficult to stay sane while you're in two simultaneous life-or-death situations, but Juno Steel is doing his best. With the Ruby 7 psychically splitting his attention between two places -- one where he is imprisoned and experimented on by Dokana executives; another where Nureyev must argue to save Juno's life -- things are looking pretty grim. And with each passing day, the executives draw closer to isolating what they need from Juno... which means that each day, they draw closer and closer to disposing of him entirely.Welcome to the Penumbra, dear Traveler.
