On Sunday, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) dropped a bombshell by leaving out former captain Babar Azam, along with fast bowling stars Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah, for the last two Tests against England. The decision to exclude Babar, Shaheen, Naseem, and Sarfaraz Ahmed was made by a selection committee constituted last week. This committee includes former international umpire Aleem Dar, former pacer Aqib Javed, ex-captain Azhar Ali, and analyst Hassan Cheema, who took the bold step of dropping four senior players from the squad. Being dropped from the national team, particularly for a player who has been a cornerstone of the batting lineup, can be demoralising. This could lead to self-doubt and questions about his place in the team, potentially undermining his confidence further. Many, including Pakistan's leading white-ball batter Fakhar Zaman, questioned the board's decision to drop Babar, highlighting how Virat Kohli was given an extended run to regain his form by the BCCI. To put it bluntly, Babar enjoyed the hype and comparisons to modern-day greats, including Virat Kohli. However, he hasn't managed to shut out the outside noise during this period of intense scrutiny. Meanwhile, the Indian women's team failed to impress in the Women's T20 World Cup. After losing to Australia and New Zealand in the group stage, they are on the brink of an early exit. After not getting an opportunity to bat at home in Chennai's first two IPL 2024 matches, Dhoni lit up Visakhapatnam with a sensational knock of 36 from just 17 balls. Chennai lost to Delhi, but CSK fans celebrated the final six from Dhoni as the decibel levels hit the roof in Vizag. Just a reminder, the Sledging Room podcast will have two episodes per week during the duration of the IPL. Dhoni's 3 sixes were enough paisa-vasool for the Sea of Yellow in Vizag as they cared very little about the result of the match. On the other hand, Rishabh Pant turned back the clock, hitting his first fifty on his return to the IPL after recovering from multiple injuries he suffered in a life-threatening car crash. In an emotional post-match chat, Rishabh Pant said he waited 1-and-half-years to see a one-handed six fly off his bat. Not just him, but the entire country waited that long to see the batting hero back on the field and doing what he does best. Moving away from the IPL, there is turmoil in Pakistan cricket. Shaheen Afridi was sacked as Pakistan captain and the PCB, which has seen quite a few administration changes in the last few months, reinstated Babar Azam as their ODI and T20I captain. Pakistan took on the Netherlands in both team's first game of the 2023 ODI Cricket World Cup. Batting first, Pakistan were given a big scare by the Netherlands, who took early wickets and had Pakistan rocking after the fall of Babar Azam. Saud Shakheel and Rizwan were able to stead the ship though and despite wickets for Bas de Leede, Pakistan managed to reach a good score of 286. In response Netherlands did threaten a couple of times, as Bas de Leede, once again, batted very well. However, the pace of Haris Rauf and Shaheen Afridi was too much, and Pakistan ended up winning by 81 runs. Finally we are back online with #PodcastChowk 7th Episode after a month long break! Please accept our sincere apologies, most of our team members were on a leave. In the episode we reflected upon #Pakistanteam clinical run in the #WCT20, pretty unreal given our circumstances. Before starting the tournament our chairman got changed, coaches sacked or resigned, New Zealand & England cancelled their tours which led to Pakistan missing out important T20's & the team selection drama. Despite all the chaos, Babarazam's XI (he played the same team throughout the tournament) topped the group stage without dropping a game. Interestingly in all 5 matches we had a different Man of the match (Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, Asif Ali, Rizwan, Shoaib Malik ), literally ALL THE CREDIT GOES TO THE BOYS.
