Loving greetings to you all, and Shanah Tovah to all of our Jewish brothers and sisters. When do you stop saying, “Shanah Tovah”? This is a question that clergy are commonly asked around this time of the Jewish year. Rabbi Hannah Elkin answers the question and offers an inspiring interpretation. Each week, a member of the clergy offers their personal perspective on a topic of their choice, such as the week's Torah portion, a Jewish holiday, ritual, custom, or history. We live in troubling times where the dangerous echoes of history pound onto Canada's streets. Chants calling for the eradication of an entire population are not just words—they are a chilling reminder of humanity's darkest chapters. My show this week confronts the reality of the genocide, both past and present, and explores how hate-filled rhetoric, left unchecked, can lead to unimaginable atrocities. I want to understand more about genocide and why it is even possible. Why are some humans, and sadly some in power, wired that way? My guest today is Amra Sabic-El-Rayess. She is a Muslim and a survivor of the Bosnian genocide. Amra endured unimaginable horrors, losing loved ones and witnessing the brutality of ethnic cleansing. Despite this, she emerged not with hate but with a mission to combat intolerance and violence. Amra made her way to America with no money nor any command of English. Today, Amra holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University, where she focuses on education, conflict, and social justice. She specializes in the role of education in preventing violence and fostering social cohesion. If applied in every home and classroom, what Amra has to say could save the human race and create a world of love, not hate. To my Jewish friends, Shanah Tovah. You deserve peace and prosperity. This is your time, and I hope everyone's time for reflection, repentance, and renewal. To purchase Amra's books or to learn more: https://www.sabicelrayess.org
Parsha Talk with Rabbis Eliot Malomet, Barry Chesler and Jeremy Kalmanofsky. We are winding our way to the conclusion of our annual Torah Reading. This week's parashah, Nitzavim-Va'yelekh [Deuteronomy 29:9-31:30] is the penultimate Shabbat reading. The following Shabbat, October 5, is Shabbat Shuvah, the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur; that weekly reading, Ha'azinu, concludes the Shabbat weekly readings on the annual cycle here in the Diaspora. The final parashah, V-zot Ha-b'rakhah [Deuteronomy 33-34] is read on Simhat Torah, this year celebrated on Friday, October 25, 2024. It is a bittersweet celebration this year, as it marks the anniversary of the War in Israel on the Jewish Calendar. Our conversation focused on a few pesukim [sentences] found primarily [or entirely] in parashat Nitzanim [Deuteronomy 29:9-30:20]. In particular, we discussed the theme of t'shuvah, repentance as it is generally translated, or return, which is both relevant to the Torah Reading and the season of the year. We continue to be mindful of the hostages, may they be speedily returned to their families, and the soldiers fighting in defense of Israel, may they be removed from harms way. This is our last recording for 5784. We will resume our show after Rosh Hashanah. With best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom and a Shanah Tovah.

This was a big one! This summer we had the privilege and honor of speaking with DC Comics legend, Paul Kupperberg. Paul was kind enough to speak to us about Episode 23 - Metropolis Mishpacha, where we covered Supergirl and her landlady Ida Berkowitz! Paul of course was the author of these stories. We talk about religion in comics, Jewish representation, the Holocaust, and Colossal Boy's colossal bris! Please check out Paul's website and shop for all things KUP! https://www.paulkupperberg.net/You can follow us on Twitter - https://twitter.com/JewishComicsPodAnd on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/jewishcomicspod
Shanah Tovah! This month, Ali and Phil interview Beth Sirull, the CEO of the San Diego Jewish Community Foundation. We discuss how to conduct ourselves ethically in business according to Jewish tradition and text. How do we “love the Lord our G-d" with all our heart, all our soul, and all our wealth? We start by explaining why Mike Pence tweeted the wrong candelabra. Asher then describes how Jews can approach the Christmas season, and we then compare the obscure Nittel Nacht observance with Vegas. John explains why the Central Time Zone is such a bummer on New Year's Eve as we wish everyone a wonderful new year.
Parsha Talk, with Rabbis Eliot Malomet, Barry Chesler and Jeremy Kalmanofsky. Parashat Nitzavim [Deut. 29:9-30:20] is the last parashah of 5782, and the third from the end of the weekly readings [V-zot Ha-b'rakhah (Deut. 33:1-34:12), the last parashah, is read on the morning of Simchat Torah (this year, Tuesday, October 18, 2022)]. Nitzavim begins with the declaration that “You stand this day, all of you, before the Lord your God . . . to enter into the covenant of the Lord your God, which the Lord your God is concluding with you this day. . . “ (29:9-11 [NJPS]). The Torah goes on to elaborate, “I make this covenant . . . not with you alone, but both with those who are standing here with us this day before the Lord our God and with those who are not with us here this day (29:13-14). This led us to a discussion of which looms larger in our imagination, the Revelation at Sinai or the Coveant Renewal in the plains of Moab. We managed to mention, and discuss, the last verse of the parashah as well, which also serves as a coda to this section of Deuteronomy. Professor Jeffrey Tigay labels the remaining 4 chapters [Va-yelekh, Ha'azinu, and Ve-zot Ha-b'rakhah] as an Epilogue, describing Moses' Last Days. With best wishes for a Shabbat Shalom and Shanah Tovah!

Synopsis: This is the audio version of the informal article/reflection I wrote LAST Rosh ha'Shanah, entitled Meditations on Rosh ha'Shanah 5781 - The Meaning of "Shanah Tovah." I'm sharing this today for five reasons: (1) This year I did something which I've never systematically done in the past: I went back and reviewed my whole year! That's when I was reminded of this. (2) It is SO easy for us to forget the lessons of the pandemic; this reflection really captured my thoughts and feelings at that time, and serve as a good reminder. (3) The ideas are still true and are as relevant as ever. (4) This was only shared in audio form on my WhatsApp group, since my Machshavah Lab Podcast wasn't created until December 29th, 2020. I figured it would be good to upload this in podcast form.(5) I might not get a chance to write a new article for this Rosh ha'Shanah, so I'm re-sharing this one to bypass that guilt. ;) ----------Today's Torah content has been brought to you by the generosity of my Patrons on Patreon.----------If you have questions, comments, or feedback, I would love to hear from you! Synopsis: Since today is Erev Rosh ha'Shanah, I thought it would be useful to explore the difference between the concept of Yom ha'Din (Judgment Day) in Stoicism and in Judaism. We compare and contrast Aurelius's comments about time and the universe with the picture of Yom ha'Din synthesized from the writings of Rav Hirsch, Meiri, Malbim, and the Abravanel. Although this episode is longer than most, I wanted to be sure to provide a complete framework for approaching the Yom ha'Din this year. Shanah Tovah! The High Holy Days are here, and as per tradition, we're adding some Hanukkah tunes to our list. We appreciate the sophisticated indie-rock elements of "I Won't Be Home for Chanukah" by TeamMate, such as the claps, and the beep-boops - and while "(When is) Hanukkah This Year" by Mêlée may have a catchy hook, it asks more questions than it answers.
This week we read Parashat Nitzavim, and we ring in the year 5780. Welcome back to the Torah of Life podcast. Thanks for listening. What gets us through the difficult times? Our Torah and Haftarah readings imply that when we surrender ourselves to God, and believe that God is with us, then God will fight our battles with us, walk alongside us, and give us direction, guidance, and strength for the road ahead. As we get closer to Yom Kippur, that's a message I can believe. It's not always easy to believe that God is with us. Sometimes we may not even want God to be so close. And yet, I believe that belief in God and God's support allows us to feel that we're never alone in the world, and that no matter how bad things might be, they can get better with God's help, if we're willing to do the work needed to be God's partner in the world. Do you agree? Does God help us when we need or is that just a story we tell ourselves? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for listening to the Torah of Life podcast, your home for transformational wisdom from a Jewish lens. Like what you hear? Please share the episode with your friends, subscribe to the show and leave us a rating and review on iTunes, or your favorite podcast platform. Have something to say about what you heard today? Great! Be in touch at rabbiilan@torahoflife.com I'll be back again soon with the next episode. Many blessings, Shabbat Shalom, and Shanah Tovah - may it be a good year for us all. Rabbi Ilan

Dear Friends, this week we will celebrate the Jewish new year Rosh Hashanah. I wish all of our friends "Shanah Tovah" - a sweet and blessed new year! But this day also has another meaning. It is "Yom Hadin", the Day of Judgement. The following ten days are days of repentance, reflection, and prayer, and they culminate in the great Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur. In the face of the disturbing events in Chemnitz it is all the more up to us to seek God in prayer and to raise our voices against racism and antisemitism. The days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur will be days of prayer and fasting for us. Firstly, for our government to take a clear and positive attitude towards Israel. Secondly, for Christians to reflect upon and repent of their indifference. And thirdly, for Israel's protection. Shanah Tovah - wishing you a sweet and blessed new year!
Content Warning: We cover the story of Dinah in this episode, which involves a sexual assault. Shanah Tovah, Theophiloi, and welcome back to what we're pretty sure is the world's only Bible podcast! We're kicking off 5779 with the third part of our increasingly unwieldy discussion of Genesis. This week, the Lentil Stew Boys are back for hijinx as we cover the lives of Jacob and Esau, and give you a shofar performance that critics are already hailing as "well-intentioned." It is both our sexiest and most pro wrestling heavy episode yet, and we're as surprised by that as you are. Topics of discussion: Our wishes for a sweet Rosh Hashanah, Jacob's invention of cosplay, situations in which literally lying to your blind father about God is totally fine, conservation of blessings, a Jacobian installment of Benito's Anthroponomastics Corner, ordinary eyes, quite a few trips to the bone zone, animal husbandry and sympathetic magic, sympathetic sheep magic, Rachel's 11, whether or not the Holy Trinity tapped, the Biblical version of Death Wish meets Death Wish III.
