Marketer of the Day with Robert Plank: Get Daily Insights from the Top Internet Marketers & Entrepreneurs Around the World

Steve Lubetkin is a baby boomer who's reinvented himself through blogs, Twitter, podcasting, audio/video recording, and documentary videos. You too can succeed in podcasting if you avoid talking too much "inside baseball", if you use checklists AND if you become a podcast producer instead of focusing solely on your own podcast. The Business of Podcasting: Steve and Donna's book Being the Media Trafalgar Communcations (Donna Papacosta's website) Display TranscriptRobert Plank: Steve Lubetkin is the managing partner of Lubetkin Media Companies, LLC and he is widely recognized as a seasoned technology futurist. The Philadelphia Business Journal has named him as one of their social media stars for his work in podcasting. He's using technology for decades. He has included an email address on his business cards since 1988. We're going to talk about a lot of fun stuff, a lot of cool podcasting stuff, how are things today Steve? Steve Lubetkin: Real good Robert, thanks for having me on the podcast. Robert Plank: I'm glad to have you on, so can you tell us about who you are, what you do and what makes you stand out, what makes you different? Steve Lubetkin: Sure, I like to tell people I am a baby boomer who has reinvented himself. The economic crisis of the last decade are making that necessary for a lot of people and it happened to me about 12 years ago when I exited a 30 year corporate career doing public relations for large companies, and needed to find out what the next chapter was going to be. The likelihood of going back into a corporate job at that point was kind of small, so what I decided to do was to reinvent myself. The initial thought I had was to continue doing what I was doing which was providing public relations advice to senior corporate executives and that was a very, very competitive market so I decided to look for something a little bit less competitive where I would have a unique specialty. Because before I went into corporate PR I was a radio journalist and production engineer, I looked back at my radio roots and this was right about the time in 2004, 2005 when what we now call social media but back then called new media was coming up over the horizon and it was mostly blogs and a little bit of Twitter and podcasting. My wife pointed out podcasting to me because she heard a radio show about it, and I started listening to what people were producing and I realized immediately that producing radio shows for corporate clients could be a really good way for them to tell their story effectively in kind of a radio format. The problem is most of the people who were doing podcasts at the time were doing a pretty amateur job of it, and I recognized immediately that the tool could be used if the skillset of the person producing the podcast was at a more professional level. Because I had the radio background and had worked in news I sort of felt that I had the right tools and just needed to reeducate myself about recording and editing digitally because I grew up in the 1970s and 80s when most of the tools we used were analog. We recorded on magnetic recording tape, we edited by using a razor blade against that magnetic recording tape and you can't do that today, or you can but there's not too many people working that way. It's much more efficient to work digitally. Robert Plank: No more Scotch taped splice all those things together. Steve Lubetkin: No exactly, and that's exactly how it was done. I set myself up to learn how to do that and once I learned how to do that I started putting myself out as a podcast producer and we began to get some clients for that. Over the years the business has morphed several times. We do a lot of audio podcasting but we also have expanded into video. We do a lot of video podcasting and documentary style video, elevator pitch style videos and things like that. What really focused me on the podcasting piece was that it's portable and people can listen to it wherever they are,

Welcome to episode #477 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. It's hard to deny that podcasting is really coming into its own as a media format. Everyone is jumping in. From amateurs to the biggest media companies in the world. I've been creating this podcast - on a weekly basis - since 2006. Almost a decade of shows. But, the first podcast that I ever appeared on, was the one from Donna Papacosta. At the time, I thought the format was a joke, but after spending time with Donna, I quickly felt that this might be the perfect channel for businesses to experiment with audio. Not to be another kind of radio, but to invent a new type of audio programming. Ten years later, and it is still evolving. I'm loving the podcasting value in relation to business. Donna runs a successful communications consultancy called, Trafalgar Communications. More recently, she co-authored the book, The Business Of Podcasting - How to Take Your Podcasting Passion from the Personal to the Professional, with Steve Lubetkin. This book is filled with some great insights on how to create a compelling show - from the tech behind it, to the story that's going to make it popular. Enjoy the conversation...   Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #477 - Host: Mitch Joel. Running time: 54:11. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Subscribe over at iTunes. Zeeshan Zaidi, lead singer and producer of the New York-based indie rock band The Commuters, joins Steve Lubetkin on this edition of the Middle Chamber Books and Music Podcast. [powerpress] From The Commuters' website: Before forming the Commuters in 2010, Canadian-born, Philippines-raised frontman Zeeshan Zaidi (whose parents were born in Pakistan and India) spent many years in the music industry. His early accomplishments included producing and engineering Grammy-nominated artist Ryan Leslie's first demo, and he subsequently worked in the marketing departments of major labels in New York helping to develop the careers of other versatile artists, including OutKast and Cee Lo Green. During this time, Zaidi was also honing his craft as a singer, songwriter and musician, performing around New York's open mic circuit. When the time arrived to put his own abilities as a performer front and center, he immediately shared a dozen demos of his songs with childhood friend, New York-based producer and soon-to-be Commuters guitarist Uri Djemal, who was also raised in the Philippines (by parents of Israeli and American descent). The two got to work co-producing Zaidi's songs at Djemal's Madpan Studios in Manhattan, where Djemal had produced many well-known artists in New York's indie-rock scene. Says Zaidi: “Uri's studio was a few blocks from my apartment and he was telling me for years to come work on my songs there. One day — when I knew it was time — I just walked over and we started.” Soon, they were joined by Djemal's previous collaborator, Ben Zwerin on bass and Paul Amorese behind the drums, solidifying the current lineup. Shortly before 3 p.m. Monday, Mt. Laurel Rabbi Ben David, senior rabbi of Adath Emanu-El and an avid marathon runner, had just checked off his “lifelong dream” of competing in--and completing--the Boston Marathon. His official time of three hours, 21 minutes and 37 seconds--a personal best--put “the running rabbi” across the finish line as the 6,245th finisher. Then, as he approached his hotel near the marathon's finish line, the lifelong dream took a darker turn. Two bombs exploded on Boylston Street a few blocks apart, killing at least three people, including an eight-year-old boy, and severely injuring scores of race spectators. For David, it was a replay of the nightmare of September 11, 2001, which he witnessed firsthand from lower Manhattan. In this podcast, Jewish Community Voice correspondent Steve Lubetkin talks with Rabbi David about his experience at the marathon.

In June, the International Association of Online Communicators (IAOC) held its international conference in Reykjavik, Iceland. In October, the Icelandic economy collapsed, the three largest banks were nationalized, and tens of thousands of Icelanders found themselves unable to withdraw money from their savings accounts to pay for ordinary expenses. Mortgages and car loans written in foreign currencies became impossibly expensive, and the country's government went hat in hand to the International Monetary Fund and even to Russia for foreign aid. In the forthcoming Fall issue of Attitudes, the semi-annual color magazine of the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey (on newsstands in early November), I'll have an article about Iceland as a travel destination. In this podcast conversation with Hjörtur Smárason, we update the economic situation in Iceland and talk about how Icelanders are coping with their changed status. Hjortur is an Icelandic social media and marketing consultant who also authors several blogs in Icelandic, and one, Marketing Safari, in English. Recently, he's focused some of his blogging on the emotional and economic impact of the credit crunch on Iceland. Photo taken at Hotel Holt, Reykjavik. In this podcast we present excerpts of remarks by Max Soliven, publisher of the Philippine Star newspaper, from his presentation to the Public Relations Society of the Philippines at the 13th National Public Relations Congress in Manila on September 28, 2006. I met Max when we both spoke to the PRSP conference, and was impressed to learn of his journalistic career, which began when Vietnam was still called Indochina. As a "newsman in the trenches," Max covered the French military disaster in Indochina, the US military conflict in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, and went on to cover insurgencies and uprisings all over Southeast Asia. He was jailed for a time during the Ferdinand Marcos regime in the Philippines, and was charged with criminal libel by President Corazon Aquino for a story his paper published claiming that she hid under a bed during the military coup that overthrew her regime. As publisher of one of the largest newspapers in the Philippines, Max wrote a 2,000 word column six days a week. Max Soliven died of a heart attack in Japan on November 24, 2006. His last column, "Is a jingoistic Japan on the rise under Abe? Or is this aging powerhouse no longer dangerous?" filed from Japan, expressed concern about the rise of a new nationalism in the Japanese government. His newspaper, The Philippine Star, captured his essence in a tribute the next day. Download the podcast here (38.8 mb stereo MP3 file, 00:27:37 duration).
