We live in troubling times where the dangerous echoes of history pound onto Canada's streets. Chants calling for the eradication of an entire population are not just words—they are a chilling reminder of humanity's darkest chapters. My show this week confronts the reality of the genocide, both past and present, and explores how hate-filled rhetoric, left unchecked, can lead to unimaginable atrocities. I want to understand more about genocide and why it is even possible. Why are some humans, and sadly some in power, wired that way? My guest today is Amra Sabic-El-Rayess. She is a Muslim and a survivor of the Bosnian genocide. Amra endured unimaginable horrors, losing loved ones and witnessing the brutality of ethnic cleansing. Despite this, she emerged not with hate but with a mission to combat intolerance and violence. Amra made her way to America with no money nor any command of English. Today, Amra holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University, where she focuses on education, conflict, and social justice. She specializes in the role of education in preventing violence and fostering social cohesion. If applied in every home and classroom, what Amra has to say could save the human race and create a world of love, not hate. To my Jewish friends, Shanah Tovah. You deserve peace and prosperity. This is your time, and I hope everyone's time for reflection, repentance, and renewal. To purchase Amra's books or to learn more: https://www.sabicelrayess.org

This week, Dr. Amra Sabic-El-Rayess is here to discuss Three Summers: A Memoir of Sisterhood, Summer Crushes, and Growing up on the Eve of War, an epic middle-grade memoir in the three years leading up to the Bosnian Genocide. Amra shares the story behind Three Summers and more about her work at Teachers College, Columbia on hate prevention, storytelling, and building empathy.
This is a very special episode of The Dr. Rod Berger Show presented by Fair Observer! Dr. Berger dives into the story of a young woman amid warfare, emerging as a scholar and award-winning author depicting the power of life, friendship, and never-ending hope. From the author of the young adult memoir The Cat I Never Named—which received seven starred reviews and a YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Award—comes another epic memoir, this time for middle-grade readers, about coming-of-age in the years leading up to the Bosnian Genocide. Three Summers by Amra Sabic-El-Rayess is the story of five young cousins who grow closer than sisters, navigating the joys and pitfalls of adolescence as ethnic tensions escalate over three summers in 1980s Bosnia. This is The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants for the next generation, aiming to build empathy and compassion in readers. Beginning with the tragic loss of her brother, Three Summers is Amra's captivating tale of healing and coming-of-age through friendship that seamlessly weaves classic adolescent experiences of first crushes and pimple woes, against the backdrop of deeper, lesser-known historical events. Written with incredible warmth, Amra takes readers on a journey that will break their hearts and put them back together again. With identity-based hate on the rise, Amra hopes her story will put faces and names and human identities to Muslim people and genocide survivors, like herself, so kids who are from different backgrounds can build empathy and start to look at each other with curiosity, not judgement. Complimentary backmatter will feature a history of the Bosnian War, author's note, timeline, and a family tree among other topics, since most readers will not learn about the Bosnian War in middle school. Amra Sabic-El-Rayess grew up in Bihac, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Currently she is a professor at Columbia University, studying how and why societies fall apart and what role education can play in rebuilding decimated countries. She is also the author of the critically acclaimed young adult memoir The Cat I Never Named.

As a Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) woman and survivor of the Bosnian Genocide, who immigrated to America, Dr. Sabic-El-Rayess has transformed from being an object of hate-fueled violence to a renowned scholar, author, activist, and storyteller who is an exemplar of resilience in the face of hate and extremism. The UK has net zero targets fast approaching. The government is investing tens of billions of pounds over the next decade in infrastructure, but there will be knock-on impacts to country-wide networks. Some are gearing up to mitigate the risks with new infrastructure - reservoirs, pipelines for water, hydrogen or new electricity upgrades. Every Utility and Infrastructure operator will start to see the impact on their networks of schemes, management, and the need to maintain resilience. This high-pressure competition for resources and time means more interactions, and increases the risk of asset strikes. This puts awareness, management and maintenance as a priority for every operator. Rachel Bridge, Partner at Fisher German, returns to the host chair on the podcast to discuss the exponential growth in infrastructure in the UK, and the essential work management and maintenance teams do to manage what is known in the industry as the 4th emergency service. Joining her are Geoff Glover, Pipelines Manager at Sabic, and Murray Peat, Manager of Linewatch. They both highlight the need for awareness of the hazards of high-pressure pipelines, and how safety is always the top priority. Why is the sector called the 4th emergency service? How does the race to net zero contribute to the challenges of operating vast infrastructure projects? And how can we ensure all new projects are as safe as they can be? In today's episode, I chat with Sofian Lamali, the Executive Director, Organizational Development & Effectiveness at SABIC - a global chemicals leader headquartered in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. From making cars and planes more fuel-efficient, to helping conserve the world's water supply and enabling colorful smartphone cases, the organization is helping their customers achieve their ambitions and build a better tomorrow.A key driver of the organization's success is talent. And with over 33,000 employees operating in 50 countries worldwide, Sofian is tasked with helping SABIC translate their corporate strategy into talent & people strategies globally. An I/O Psychologist by trade, he applies evidence-based approaches to enable employee growth across the organization. And this was the basis of a really engaging conversation covering a number of topics, though with a specific emphasis on the Middle East region. Selfishly, I had a number of questions for Sofian, including:What are the unique organizational challenges facing the Middle East region? How has organizational psychology contributed to the broader diversification of the economy beyond resources? And how do cultural and structural complexities impact talent development and leadership practices within organizations?I set a goal in 2023 to connect with more diverse voices. And this discussion did not disappoint! From the region's unique demographics - 70% of the population is under 30 - to the rapidly-changing social conditions that are impacting every corner of Middle Eastern society, I came away with a deeper understanding of the region. Beyond that, it was a really fun discussion, and I hope you enjoy our conversation, as much as I did recording it.Sofian LamaliSofian is an emerging thought & practice leader in the field of leadership development, talent management, learning & culture. His focus is to support global organizations translate their corporate strategy into talent & people strategies. As an I/O Psychologist, he applies evidence-based approaches to enable people growth. Additive manufacturing (AM) tends to see popular media coverage when a consumer good is 3D printed. 3D printed houses and fashion grace headlines at the moment. On social media, however, additive manufacturing is a daily topic of conversation for users, students and entrepreneurs. As digital editor for Additive Manufacturing Media, I have the pleasure of observing and engaging in some of those conversations. On this episode of the AM Radio podcast, Peter Zelinski and I review eight AM-related social media posts that caught my eye in recent weeks. Among the topics we discuss are machine modifications, a debatable assumption about large-format additive manufacturing and the AM fan-favorite, or maybe anti-fan favorite: AM's cost effectiveness. Sometimes you just need to be around black women. The story that black women don't support each other is a myth. The story that we are infinitely strong and resilient is also a lie. Sometimes, you need to lay aside the strength and let go of the resilience and just take a pause. Take off the mask. Take off the armor. And just have a little banana pudding and peach cobbler. And a few adult beverages. And talk about the stuff that just makes you crazy without having to explain the backstory.
