You'll love this story of a young "feeling" kid, who is ADHD, filled with anxiety and lacking in self confidence but ends up as a Super Bowl champion in the NFL and a sought after speaker and author. In this episode we walk through the up and down seasons in the life of Seahawk's long snapper, Clint Gresham. As a boy growing up in Texas, church was always a part of his story....but it became the focus of his story when he made a radical shift in 2009 when one month changed his life to this day. It happened with the help of a mentor who cared enough to be present and to speak into his life. Clint's football story includes times of disappointment, frustration and heartache but his obedience to God, as crazy at it seemed at times, revealed HIS awesome grace on the other side. You'll hear some inside thoughts on coach Pete Carroll, plus Clint's call to create a prophetic video called, "The Making of a Champion", as well as the intense emotion that a Super Bowl win and loss can evoke. Our conversation took a deep dive into the power of words, and some thoughts on the value of pain and so many other inspiring bits of wisdom. This guy is the real deal: authentic, vulnerable and willing to share it all!Definitely read his book: "Becoming"And watch the short 15 minute video with Russell Wilson, Sherman Smith and more. In a dramatic turn of events, the Kansas Reflector, a news affiliate of the non-profit States Newsroom, found itself at the center of a contentious battle with Facebook. Sherman Smith, the Editor-in-Chief of the Kansas Reflector, revealed the unfolding saga during an exclusive interview with Mike Blinder, Publisher of E&P Magazine. The saga began when Facebook rejected an editorial titled "When Facebook Fails, Local Media Matters Even More For Our Planet's Future," authored by Dave Kendall and published on the Kansas Reflector's website. The piece highlighted Facebook's rejection of Kendall's documentary on climate change as too divisive, emphasizing the importance of local media in disseminating crucial information. Shortly after attempting to share the editorial on Facebook, the Kansas Reflector faced a startling development. Facebook not only rejected the post but proceeded to remove all past posts linking to the Reflector's website. The platform deemed the Kansas Reflector a cybersecurity threat and contacted every individual who had interacted with the Kansas Reflector's page over the past four years, sending notifications labeling the site as “questionable,” prompting widespread confusion and concern among followers. Smith recounted a conversation with Facebook spokesperson Andy Stone, who acknowledged the platform's error in blocking the Kansas Reflector's posts. However, Stone's apology, delivered via Twitter instead of Facebook's own channels, raised eyebrows and underscored the lack of direct communication from the social media giant. Smith pressed Stone for further clarification on Facebook's actions and the potential implications for media outlets. Stone's response left Smith with lingering concerns about Facebook's accountability and transparency, particularly regarding its content moderation policies and the impact on journalistic integrity. The exchange highlighted the need for greater scrutiny of Facebook's role in shaping public discourse and its responsibility to uphold press freedom. Smith emphasized to Stone the widespread impact of Facebook's actions, reminding him that individuals who had interacted with the Kansas Reflector's page were told that Facebook deems their site as questionable. Smith highlighted the detrimental effect this had on the publication's reputation and audience trust. Despite raising these concerns, Stone expressed his inability to rectify the situation beyond his initial apology on X, leaving Smith and the Kansas Reflector team frustrated with the lack of concrete action or recourse. This exchange underscored the broader implications of Facebook's content moderation decisions and the challenges faced by media organizations in navigating such platforms while maintaining journalistic integrity. As the situation continues to unfold, Smith remains committed to keeping the public informed and holding Facebook accountable. He underscores the importance of transparency and urges Facebook to provide a credible explanation for its actions. The Kansas Reflector's battle with Facebook underscores the challenges facing media organizations in the digital age and raises critical questions about the power wielded by tech giants over the dissemination of news and information. As the story continues to evolve, it serves as a sobering reminder of the ongoing struggle to preserve press freedom and protect the public's right to access information.

Aa tumultuous legislative session. A police raid on a small-town newspaper. Pitched political battles over Medicaid expansion, and so much more. The year of 2023 may not have seen a major election, but that was about the only news that didn't happen this past year in Kansas politics. This retrospective edition of the Kansas Reflector podcast looks back at the year's top stories with opinion editor Clay Wirestone, editor Sherman Smith and reporter Tim Carpenter.
When Sherman Smith recruited Deland McCullough to play American football for Miami University, he loved Deland and became the father Deland never had. Deland had great admiration for Sherman and aimed to become the man he was. Decades later, when Deland tracked down his birth mom, she shocked him with the news, “Your father’s name is Sherman Smith.” Yes, that Sherman Smith. Coach Smith was stunned to learn he had a son, and Deland was stunned that his father figure was literally his father! The next time they met, Sherman hugged Deland and said, “My son.” Deland had never heard that from a father. He knew Sherman “was saying it from a place of ‘I’m proud. This is my son,’ ” and he was overwhelmed. We too should be overwhelmed by the perfect love of our heavenly Father. John writes, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” We are as dumbfounded as Deland, who didn’t dare think someone like Sherman could be his dad. Is it really true? John insists, Yes, “And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1). If you believe in Jesus, His Father is also your Dad. You may feel orphaned, alone in the world. But the truth is you have a Father—the only perfect One—and He’s proud to call you His child.
The Top Hat crew sits down with editor-in-chief of the Kansas Reflector, Sherman Smith, to break down the still developing story of what happened in Marion County last week where Police staged a "Gestapo-style" raid on The Marion County Record, seizing computers, records, cellphones, and contributing to the death of the newspaper's 98-year-old co-owner.
Kansas Reflector editor-in-chief Sherman Smith joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to talk about the police raid on the tiny Marion County Record. He explains the newspaper's investigation of the DUI history of a local restaurant owner who'd applied for a liquor license, which led to an August 11 raid of both the newspaper's office and publishers' home. The local magistrate, with her own DUI history, signed the warrant that alleged possible identity theft by one of the reporters. Sherman explains what the police took, why it was ultimately returned, and why he's encouraged by the national and international response that sends the message that this treatment of journalists will not be tolerated. He also reads from the Reflector's initial reporting. Few in the Kansas Legislative or investment world understood what a TEFFI was when lawmakers approved a bill last year allowing the launch of a so-called technology-enabled fiduciary financial institution. Founder Brad Heppner's vision includes investments in rural Kansas and attracted support from local and state officials. But a three-month Kansas Reflector investigation spearheaded by editor Sherman Smith raises an array of questions from the company's business model to the likelihood of any small towns benefiting at all. Opinion editor Clay Wirestone leads a discussion of the in-depth report with Smith and columnist Max McCoy, who also wrote about Heppner and his company, Beneficient.

This episode just oozes with wisdom from one of the most successful players and coaches in football. You'll hear how the game of football is just a small part of the impact Sherman Smith has on players. From High school to the NFL his unique slant on what it takes to be successful is what makes his story so compelling. As a follower of Jesus he strives to walk the walk and let his actions speak. As he says. "It's not what I do, or say, IT'S WHO I AM, that matters most. You'll hear about the power of the team's FRIDAY MORNING DEVOTIONALS, why some players were depressed even shortly after a Super Bowl win, and the incredible miracle story that he shares in the Kendrick Brothers film: "SHOW ME THE FATHER". While progress has been made in recent years, a lot of work remains. Laura Howard, secretary of the Department for Children and Families and the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services, is focused on improving outcomes for children in state custody. She joins Sherman Smith to discuss her work monitoring approximately 6,800 kids in the Kansas foster care system, as well as support programs for parents and families.

After four months of the legislative session, the Kansas Legislature reached bedrock and key areas of public policy. The evidence emerges in the most simplistic forms in the snappy yes or no votes of bills and amendment resolutions, and also in poignant and sometimes lengthy speeches on the House and Senate floors. Senior reporter Tim Carpenter is joined by opinion editor C.J. Janovy, editor in chief Sherman Smith, and reporter Noah Taborda on the Kansas Reflector podcast to sort through gems of oratory, touching on the GOP power to override vetoes by the governor, the revisionist history applied to COVID-19, the related financial intervention by the government during the pandemic, and consideration of a medical marijuana law.
In response to the pandemic and other policy desires, the 2021 Kansas legislative session has been packed with action on several fronts. It’s a long process and the Legislature has weeks left to discuss and amend favored bills, but some measures have already been approved. On this episode of the Kansas Reflector podcast, editor in chief Sherman Smith, senior reporter Tim Carpenter, reporter Noah Taborda and opinion editor C.J. Janovy discuss major movement at the statehouse thus far.

Don't Be the One - Sherman Smith August 04, 2020
In 1972 a little boy was born and immediately put up for adoption. This week's guest might have the most dramatic and heartwarming story we or anyone else has ever had the pleasure of sharing. Our guest, Deland McCullough was adopted and raised in Youngstown, OH. Football wasn't just a thing to Deland, it was the thing that allowed him to escape all hardships he was facing. In true underdog fashion, Deland wasn't the star athlete from the beginning. He worked hard and had passion. Heck, he even enrolled in the Navy because he wanted out of Youngstown so badly. His break came when he was recruited by Miami University, more specifically, Sherman Smith (remember that name, it will hold great importance later). Deland continued to be the underdog fighting hard to earn his position which ultimately leads to a record-breaking career for him at Miami. He met adversity yet again when he went undrafted in 1996. He joined the Cincinnati Bengals and in true Deland spirit was fighting for his position until an unfortunate knee injury resulted in several surgeries. He recovered and joined the Philadelphia Eagles, but never saw any regular season playing time. He made his last attempt in the Canadian league with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers before retiring as a player. He had no idea who his father was when he started his coaching career in 2000, but always stayed in touch with his mentor, Sherman Smith. He finally reconnected with his biological mother in 2017, only to find out that his father was his mentor, Sherman Smith. Yes, the same Sherman Smith who recruited him out of Youngstown, OH. Can you imagine his disbelief? Now a very humble running backs coach for the Kansas City Chief's, he leads with control and confidence. He is very invested in the people that make up his teams. Success comes in many forms, but for the NFL the crowning achievement is the Superbowl Championship, which Deland can name proudly add to his resume. He is also a proud husband and father of four young men; One of which is following in his footsteps and making his way at Miami University. We are so grateful for the opportunity to share this story with you, Underdog Nation! Peggy Lowe, of KCUR 89.3 in Kansas City, and Sherman Smith, of The Topeka Capital-Journal, talk about in-depth reporting about 13 girls who were placed in state custody, trafficked for sex and sent to prison. Thousands of children were added to the Kansas foster care system in the past eight years, leading to severe instability and a surge in runaways who were vulnerable to human trafficking.
A review of last year's happenings in state government from Jim McLean, managing editor of the Kansas News Service, Tim Carpenter, statehouse bureau chief for The Topeka Capital-Journal, Jonathan Shorman, statehouse reporter for the Wichita Eagle and Kansas City Star, and Sherman Smith, manging editor for The Capital-Journal.
Chandra Levy had her life together. She was an intern at the Federal Bureau of Prisons and was just a few days shy of graduating with a master’s degree in public administration. She had dreams of working for the FBI. Maybe the CIA. So when she suddenly went missing in early May of 2001, her parents were alarmed. Their alarm swelled when they learned that Chandra’d been having an affair with Congressman Gary Condit. Was Condit to blame for Chandra’s disappearance? Had he done something to her? Despite a damn good alibi, suspicion enveloped Condit. In the winter of 2000, two men terrorized Wichita, Kansas. Over a short period, their random crimes escalated. First they robbed a man. Then they shot a woman. Then, they raped and terrorized a group of five, twenty-something friends. The men murdered four of the five friends. The lone survivor lived through the ordeal when the killers’ bullet deflected off her barrette. She played dead, then sought help. Ultimately, her testimony helped put the men behind bars. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary.
