Under-recruited running back from a collapsed American city — with a single mom and a dream — wins the Super Bowl. Sounds familiar, right? But NFL coach Deland McCullough's story, as told through his new book with Sarah Spain, has a twist all its own. (Thanks to a little help from Sir Mix-a-Lot.) P.S. One correction, at the 17:50 mark: Deland McCullough's senior year of college was 1995, not 2005. • Read "Runs in the Family": https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Runs-in-the-Family/Sarah-Spain/9781668036280 Learn more about your ad choices. Irish Breakdown closes the week with a Friday Rapid Fire edition of IB Nation Sports Talk. Today's topics include: * News broke Friday that Notre Dame is set to hire Detroit Lions Director of Scouting Advancement Mike Martin as the football team's new general manager. Martin spent the last four years in Detroit's front office, where he helped turn a perennially losing organization into one of the top teams in the NFL over the last two years. We share our thoughts on Marcus Freeman going the NFL route to fill the vacancy as well as the possibility of Auburn's Kenyatta Watson working with Martin in a recruiting/player personnel role. * We discuss comments from former Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden, who was named the Broyles Award winner as the nation's top college football assistant coach for the 2024 season. * Fill-in the blank...It's BLANK that Golden also said that Irish secondary coach Mike Mickens will be up for the Broyles Award very soon. * Fill-in the blank...We started the week talking about the fact that Penn State running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider is likely to replace Deland McCullough in the same position here at Notre Dame. Nothing's official yet...but it's BLANK that Seider posted a photo of Notre Stadium from an airplane to his IG story yesterday and he also has a picture of Jeremiyah Love as his IG avatar photo. * Eight former Notre Dame players got invites to the NFL Draft Combine: Riley Leonard, Beaux Collins, Howard Cross, Rylie Mills, Benjamin Morrison, Mitchell Evans, Jack Kiser, and Xavier Watts. Who has the most to gain? * We got word this week that Notre Dame's spring football practice will begin on March 18th. We already knew it will end with the Blue-Gold game on April 12th. What do you think? * Fill-in the blank...Olivia Miles and Sonia Citron combining for 12 3-pointers in Thursday's win over Pittsburgh is BLANK. * After USC handed No. 1 UCLA it's first loss of the season, on a scale of 1 to 10...What chance do you give the Irish to be the new No. 1 team when the new polls come out Monday? * This got buried in the Super Bowl last week...The NFL will play its first game in Australia in 2026. There will also be a game in Dublin this season with the Pittsburgh Steelers playing an opponent that will be announced later. Do you Buy or Sell them? Irish Breakdown answers subscriber submitted "We In or We Out" questions as well. Some of today's topics include: * We In or We Out: Coach Al Golden and Coach Mike Mickens are both on ND staff for the 2025 season? * In or Out: After watching Notre Dame come out rusty from a bye, the Top 4 seeds will experience this in the playoffs after sitting for 3+ weeks and going up against teams that played the week prior. * In or Out: We will see Mike Denbrock employ more 21 Personnel the last three games of the regular season? * In or Out: We will see Denbrock employ more 21 Personnel in the playoffs? * We in or We out: Now that Riley Leonard has discovered that Mitchell Evans is back to full health and up to his old tricks, and that The Great One can take you to the end zone single-handedly if Mr. Leonard continues to throw to Him (2 catches for 30 yards on a 36-yard drive and 2 catches plus a PI for 45 yards on a 65-yard drive, both ending in TDs), Mr. Leonard will continue to throw to them. The added offense will present additional complexity for opposing defenses, elevating the offense to Championship-grade. * The senior day ceremony is cool, because it's fun to cheer for the seniors individually and they have a nice moment, but in a way it's also anticlimactic because they don't actually get to run out of the tunnel “one last time” together with their teammates. We in or we out? * Notre dame needs to win a championship before they start getting the respect they truly deserve from all media outlets. In or Out? * ND will lose both Mickens and RB coach Deland McCullough this offseason. We in or We out? * In or Out: Ohio State gets left out of the playoffs if they lose again. * Virginia's QB has a noodle arm and tends to throw a few interceptions from time to time, are you in or out on the over bet if it was set at 2.5 for Notre Dame's total number of interceptions? * Michigan will become the first team in history not to qualify for a bowl game following an NC championship season. In or Out? * The O-Line continues to quietly grow these last few games of the season until we realize that they aren't really making any major mistakes and have become quite consistent. We in or we out? * Notre Dame will out score their next 3 opponents 110 to 40. We in or We out? * We in/ We out? Since each week brings chaos to the CFP, this week's chaos will be provided by Kansas, and San Jose St. * In or Out: The coaching carousel that occurs after the final game will have a major impact on playoff teams. * More! Deland McCullough, former Chiefs RB coach, joined The Drive to tell stories from the last time KC and SF matched up in the Super Bowl.
When Sherman Smith recruited Deland McCullough to play American football for Miami University, he loved Deland and became the father Deland never had. Deland had great admiration for Sherman and aimed to become the man he was. Decades later, when Deland tracked down his birth mom, she shocked him with the news, “Your father’s name is Sherman Smith.” Yes, that Sherman Smith. Coach Smith was stunned to learn he had a son, and Deland was stunned that his father figure was literally his father! The next time they met, Sherman hugged Deland and said, “My son.” Deland had never heard that from a father. He knew Sherman “was saying it from a place of ‘I’m proud. This is my son,’ ” and he was overwhelmed. We too should be overwhelmed by the perfect love of our heavenly Father. John writes, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” We are as dumbfounded as Deland, who didn’t dare think someone like Sherman could be his dad. Is it really true? John insists, Yes, “And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1). If you believe in Jesus, His Father is also your Dad. You may feel orphaned, alone in the world. But the truth is you have a Father—the only perfect One—and He’s proud to call you His child.

As we looked back at the year, we found some ridiculous updates to some romances that just won't quit. Turns out Meirivone and her Rag Doll husband are having fidelity issues, and the magic is gone between Erica Eiffel and her towering Parisian lover! Plus, people are taking their Replikas a little TOO seriously. But don't worry, Amenhotep and Tiye are still making headlines, Oscar Wilde along with Hadrian and Antinous are still inspiring LGBT communities to stay strong, and Deland McCullough's family continues to impress!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

No position has more uncertainty and questions surrounding it than the running back position for Indiana Hoosiers football. With so much turnover during and after last season, there is little known about this position group heading into the upcoming season. On today's episode of Locked on Hoosiers, Jacob Rude (@JacobRude) tries to make sense of the running back room. With so many questions unanswered, we look to see who could potentially step up and into the starting role next season.Shaun Shivers, the transfer from the Auburn Tigers, seems to be the early favorite to land the starting position given his experience. While it was limited at Auburn, Shivers still has the most experience of anyone on the Hoosiers roster next season.A number of other players could make impacts this season ranging from fellow transfer Josh Henderson to true freshman Jaylin Lucas and redshirt freshman Trent Howland. David Ellis had previously established himself as a third-down back prior to his injury and could look to reprise that role. The show wraps by looking at some of the biggest storylines to monitor, including how the group moves forward without Deland McCullough, who is now with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. After injuries cut short his playing career, he soon found his professional calling. Blossoming as a running backs coach for his alma mater Miami (OH), he then joined Kevin Wilson's staff in Bloomington, churning out the likes of Jordan Howard and Tevin Coleman. After a fateful internship with the Seattle Seahawks and a stop at USC, Deland then signed on with the Kansas City Chiefs and became nothing less than a Super Bowl champion. But none of that could compare to the best place in creation, Indiana University, and to all of Hoosier nation's delight he has come back home, bringing his incredibly talented family with him. Along with 3 of his sons now committed to the Tom Allen's program, he just help land USC transfer Stephen Carr, and is thus instrumental in getting the three highest rated football recruits in IU history. And oh yeah, he has the most unbelievable personal story you will ever hear ever. Literally, you won't be able to believe it, but it's 1000% true. A podcast that is solidly 80% about IU football! We talk about the Hoosiers and their fascinating offseason - the hiring of Charlton Warren and what that means, the return of Deland McCullough and what that says about both Tom Allen and the IU football culture, and the reveal of the "new" 2021 football schedule (which looks an awful lot like the "old" 2021 football schedule if we're being honest). There's a bit of basketball talk at the end, too.
Noah and Brad start by recapping this week's Big Ten News and Recruiting Updates. This includes the Naismith Trophy midseason team, Indiana's new RB coach, Deland McCullough, and Michigan basketball is back! They then get into Big Ten Basketball and what to expect out of the conference, and each team specifically, moving forward. They wrap up with a draft of their current Top 5 Clutch Players.
Be honest. You did not expect Indiana to beat No. 8 Iowa for the season sweep of the Hawkeyes. You definitely did not expect it after IU went down 17-4. Nithin, Matt and Jevan break down the Hoosiers' win, and debate whether or not that victory -- along with Khristian Lander and Anthony Leal's play -- changes the trajectory for Indiana for the rest of the season. The guys also talk about Tom Allen bringing back Deland McCullough to the Hoosiers staff. Additionally, "Who won the week?", previews of Northwestern and No. 4 Ohio State, and predictions come your way as well.Check us out and follow us on social media!WEBSITE: https://www.indianahq.com/ • Twitter: https://twitter.com/indianahq • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thehoosiersound/ • iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/id1282226985?mt=2&ls=1 • Google Podcasts: https://www.google.com/podcasts?feed=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5zcHJlYWtlci5jb20vc2hvdy8yNjc3NTkyL2VwaXNvZGVzL2ZlZWQ • Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0lk71fzLgbLP76iPNA14cP • SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-429075463-810819009 • iHeartRadio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/the-hoosier-sound-28550408/?cmp=web_share • TuneIn Radio: http://tun.in/pi2cE • Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-hoosier-sound

Episode 536 Sherman Smith is a former NFL player and coach that has been a part of two Super Bowl teams. He was selected in the 2nd round of the 1976 NFL Drafty by the Seahawks. He played six seasons in Seattle as a running back and retired after the 1983 season. He began his coaching career in 1985 in high school and after spending 10 years coaching high school and college, he would return to the NFL as the running backs coach with the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans. His NFL coaching journey took him from Houston to Tennessee to Washington D.C. and back to Seattle. From 2010-2017, he was the Seahawks running backs coach and helped his team to a Super Bowl championship in 2013 and an NFC championship in 2014. This podcast will share with you Sherman's journey to the NFL as a player and coach. But the story of Sherman Smith and his son Deland McCullough is one of the craziest you'll ever hear and shows you how God can move in the tiny details when you least expect it. This is one powerful story. Follow Sports Spectrum on Instagram: @Sports_Spectrum
In 1972 a little boy was born and immediately put up for adoption. This week's guest might have the most dramatic and heartwarming story we or anyone else has ever had the pleasure of sharing. Our guest, Deland McCullough was adopted and raised in Youngstown, OH. Football wasn't just a thing to Deland, it was the thing that allowed him to escape all hardships he was facing. In true underdog fashion, Deland wasn't the star athlete from the beginning. He worked hard and had passion. Heck, he even enrolled in the Navy because he wanted out of Youngstown so badly. His break came when he was recruited by Miami University, more specifically, Sherman Smith (remember that name, it will hold great importance later). Deland continued to be the underdog fighting hard to earn his position which ultimately leads to a record-breaking career for him at Miami. He met adversity yet again when he went undrafted in 1996. He joined the Cincinnati Bengals and in true Deland spirit was fighting for his position until an unfortunate knee injury resulted in several surgeries. He recovered and joined the Philadelphia Eagles, but never saw any regular season playing time. He made his last attempt in the Canadian league with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers before retiring as a player. He had no idea who his father was when he started his coaching career in 2000, but always stayed in touch with his mentor, Sherman Smith. He finally reconnected with his biological mother in 2017, only to find out that his father was his mentor, Sherman Smith. Yes, the same Sherman Smith who recruited him out of Youngstown, OH. Can you imagine his disbelief? Now a very humble running backs coach for the Kansas City Chief's, he leads with control and confidence. He is very invested in the people that make up his teams. Success comes in many forms, but for the NFL the crowning achievement is the Superbowl Championship, which Deland can name proudly add to his resume. He is also a proud husband and father of four young men; One of which is following in his footsteps and making his way at Miami University. We are so grateful for the opportunity to share this story with you, Underdog Nation!
