Long before Governor Ron DeSantis declared a new war on wokeness, Florida lawmakers in the 1950s and 60s tried going after the NAACP, suspected communists and gay people in Florida schools and universities. The lawmakers upended life for countless numbers of their fellow Floridians before being upended themselves by their own zeal for the cause. Now that DeSantis is bringing this playbook to a presidential campaign, Rachel Maddow and Isaac-Davy Aronson ask what we can learn from the last time Florida went down this path. Featuring guests:Stacy Braukman, author of Communists and Perverts Under the Palms: The Johns Committee in Florida, 1956-1965Shevrin Jones, Florida State SenatorRobert Buccellatto, historian and co-host of the Florida History Podcast

More than 400 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced in U.S. state legislatures this year, and more than twenty have been signed into law. That's greater than the last five years–combined. Some of these pieces of legislation seek to outlaw access to gender-affirming healthcare for transgender youth. Others would make it easier to ban books from school libraries. Bloomberg reporter Ella Ceron joins this episode to talk about the momentum behind this push and which states are pressing ahead with these bills. We also hear from Democratic state senator Shevrin Jones of Florida—where ten anti-LGBTQ bills are on the table—about the political battle in his state.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A panel conversation responding to the ongoing attacks on teaching accurate history, with Shevrin Jones, Laura Briggs, Raphael Rogers, and Jennifer Rich, moderated by Barbara Krauthamer. For not the first time in U.S. history, the content of public school curricula is being challenged across the country. Since January 2021, 41 states have introduced bills or taken other steps that would restrict the teaching or discussion of “divisive concepts,” such as racism, sexism, critical race theory, and the 1619 Project. A Tennessee school board recently banned teaching the Pulitzer Prize-winning Holocaust novel Maus. And at least 16 states are considering "don't say gay" laws, which restrict discussions of sexual orientation or gender identity. This panel of scholars, political leaders, and teachers addresses the ongoing national assault against teaching accurate and evidence-based history at the K-12 level, and increasingly, at the community college and university levels. Panelists consider the history of public school educational disputes around race, sex and sexuality and the impact these educational gag orders have, not just on the teaching of history, but most importantly on our democratic system of government and the meaning of equality in the United States. Panelists will also consider ways to push back against these challenges. A public Q&A follows. This event was co-presented by the UMass Amherst Department of History and the Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab at Florida International University. It is co-sponsored by the following UMass Amherst entities: Anthropology Department Racial Justice Collective, Civic Engagement and Service-Learning, Center of Racial Justice and Youth-Engaged Research, College of Humanities and Fine Arts, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Linguistics Department, Public History Program, and the W.E.B. Don't we have bigger fish to fry?The media focuses its attention - and therefore our attention - on a few national level offices like President and some Senate offices.BUT!Life happens at the local level! And the decisions made at the city, county, and state level have an ENORMOUS impact on our actual lives. It's not just tax codes and jaywalking ordinances (not that those aren't exciting).Housing discrimination gets encoded in city council meetings, and white supremacy is enforced by municipal police departments or county sheriffs.By the same token, those laws, those rules, and those budgets can be unwritten and renegotiated in those same offices. And the people who run for these offices are accessible! They live in your town, they get coffee from your favorite coffee spot. Sometimes they even check their own email! And there is no shortage of awesome, inspiring people who are stepping up to run and occupy these offices, and to use their power to tear down oppressive structures and help make their communities more just, more equitable, and more compassionate. We will never achieve justice at the national level until we can practice it at the local level. We will never achieve equity at the national level until we can practice it at the local level. What we have to work on is our imagination. We need to practice imagining what that society might look like if we practiced our values instead of believing them to be out of reach. And we need role models of inspiration to activate our imaginations. This podcast is on a quest to introduce you to these role models. They exist, right now, all over the country. They are regular people, but they are willing to exercise their imaginations and then do the work to make it real.
