Plus, Amy Grant opens up for the first time since her bike accident. And, She Made It: the inspiring story behind “Cuyana” founders Karla Gallardo and Shilpa Shah whose “Less Is More” approach has helped grow their company into a celebrity favorite.
Shilpa Shah is the Co-Founder of Cuyana, a fashion brand that marries luxury-level branding with premium quality apparel and accessories, offering "fewer, better things" to women at accessible price points. Shilpa spent the first part of her career designing web and mobile interfaces for Fortune 500 companies. Although she was passionate about design, it wasn't until she was pregnant with her first son that she felt empowered to do more in her life. Unsure what the right next step was, Shilpa decided to apply to business school at 32 while having a 2½-year-old at home. Good thing she did because through the process, she met her co-founder Karla and they were inspired to create an affordable luxury direct-to-consumer brand - which might sound like the norm now but they were true pioneers in this space in 2011. Today, they've grown their SF based company profitably despite taking funding of more than $30million dollars. Cuyana has been recognized as one of the most innovative companies in America and continues to have a loyal base of customers and a strong celebrity-following.We'll talk to Shilpa about building a strong brand that is largely driven by word of mouth, why the concept of work life balance is BS, and how they've navigated multiple challenges from raising money from investors to restructuring their business in the pandemic environment that we're in.In this episode, we'll talk to Shilpa about: * How Shilpa has intertwined the creative and analytical sides of her personality. [5:47]* What prompted Shilpa to go to business school at age 32 was a desire to do more. [8:09]* Balancing being the primary caretaker and the primary breadwinner. [11:52]* One of the mistakes co-founders make in selecting one another is looking for someone similar to them. [15:49]* How the direct-to-consumer concept arose from a desire to build a fashion brand. [17:37]* The value of setting clear boundaries for what you can and cannot compromise on in business. [19:59]* Focusing on supply chain and the business model in the first two years of Cuyana. [20:36]* What makes building businesses difficult is taking the time to figure out what works. [23:52]* How Shilpa came to understand the right messaging for her customers which was critical in the brand's growth. [24:4013]* Educating their customers on Cuyana's “fewer, better things” concept. [28:00]* Why staying close to your customer and seeing how they interact with your product is key. [29:54]* Fundraising in the early days and why understanding the business is the true first step. [31:27]* Hear Shilpa's analogy for sustainability in a tech company and why Cuyana's focus was always on profitability. [33:46]* Getting male investors to understand their concept during the fundraising process. [35:44]* Despite all the challenges, Shilpa and Carla never gave themselves the option of quitting. [40:39]* How Shilpa and Carla's entrepreneurship was received by their immigrant parents. [42:12]* Why it is essential – as an entrepreneur – to become comfortable with failure. [45:27]* Discover Shilpa's perspective on work-life balance – and why she thinks balance is BS. [46:33]* Shilpa's advice for female founders with families: Make sure you're solving the right problem. [50:33]* Some challenges Cuyana has faced and how Shilpa and Carla overcame them. [53:06]* Some of the key takeaways that helped propel Cuyana forward, like thinking quickly. In 2011, a new brand launched that would soon rewrite the minimalist's playbook: Cuyana. Co-Founders Karla Gallardo and Shilpa Shah built a brand centered on intentional design and buying, establishing Cuyana's ethos as “fewer, better.” Today, Cuyana has grown to eight stores nationwide and is known for timeless collections of premium leather accessories and luxe wardrobe essentials, from alpaca and cashmere. Yet before Gallardo and Shah began setting a new standard in the industry, their early career lives were shockingly different. Gallardo worked at Goldman Sachs as an investment banking analyst, and Shah began her career in interaction design, where she gained over 15 years of experience designing web and mobile interfaces for companies such as Disney, AT&T, and Sun Microsystems. On this episode of Second Life, find out how Gallardo and Shah came together to create a dynamic, strategic brand without losing sight of their mission. Episode 13 of Abhay Dandekar's talk show, "Trust Me...I Know What I'm Doing".
In this episode, Shilpa Shah Co-Founder of Cuyana, talks to our host, Cameron Albert-Deitch, about her Book Smart pick, The Giver by Lois Lowry
In Karla Gallardo's estimation, the world got tired of fast fashion just as the direct-to-consumer model was being proven out. "By 2010 there was fatigue, there was dissatisfaction with the quality," Galardo said on the Modern Retail Podcast. "A lot of of news was coming out in terms of the conditions of the factories where these products were made. There was an opportunity for something better right after that bubble burst." Gallardo co-founded Cuyana with Shilpa Shah in 2011. The idea was to do to fashion what Warby Parker did to glasses "The choice was really obvious back then. It was 'well, this worked in the frames vertical, can we can we do this on the accessories and apparel side?" But, over the years, the program has changed a great deal -- even more so as a result of the coronavirus.
Today's guest is Shilpa Shah. Whether it is with her coaching, community building or with her meditation practice, singing and storytelling, creativity is at the core of everything she does. A community builder and facilitator at heart, Shilpa tells us how she uses her experience, creativity and a focus on what feels good, to help people connect at a deeper level, build relationships, be playful, and open to new ideas. How creativity is an integral part of activism, as is showed with the Black Lives Matter Movement, and how, following a long tradition embraced by social change movements, she used singing as a form of protest, but also of healing, with the singing circle she created. We also talk about being open to creativity and creating the space to welcome and nourish it. Shilpa describes her creative approach to meditation and how, during lockdown, she ran meditation circles to help people deal with anxiety and loneliness and wrote a short story for children to help them understand the isolation and stress caused by such an extreme situation. She even shares with us, and for the very first time, a beautiful poem she wrote about connecting with nature. To me, Shilpa is the embodiment of what it means to come alive creatively, so I hope you will enjoy her interview. Karla Gallardo is the co-founder and CEO of Cuyana, a San Francisco-based women's clothing and lifestyle brand. She and her co-founder Shilpa Shah founded the company in 2011 with the concept of fewer, better things. Born and raised in Ecuador, her story is one of immigration, determination, careful planning, and family. With an immigrant mentality, Karla put her all into achievement and traditional definitions of success: an ivy league education, a STEM degree, a coveted career in investment banking. But, she always had an urge to build something bigger, a company that would impact the bottom of the pyramid. Now, since starting Cuyana with a $20,000 loan, and a hat, of all things, as their first product, the company's attracted tens of millions of dollars in investments.
Karla and Shilpa talk about how Karla came up with the idea to start Cuyana, what it is like to have an international supply chain, raising money, and more. "I have an opportunity to maximize what I contribute, to see and push my limits to my capacity. And so I think that ability wasn't lost on me, to try it, to really see what we were all capable of.” - Shilpa Shah. Learn more about this episode at karagoldin.com/29
