Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

This week we meet an architect of 1960s British Satire and a titan of 20th century media, Sir David Frost. From humble beginnings, David found his true course in college where he edited the school paper, edited the literary magazine, and for our purposes most importantly joined the Cambridge Footlights Society where he dove head first into the evolving British comedy scene. A genial presenter, David's first big break came as host of That Was The Week That Was, and he followed it up with more clever series including the Frost Report. Drawing on a writing and acting staff that included (among others) Roald Dahl, The Two Ronnies, and much of the Monty Python Troupe, Frost's shows were literate, topical, and very funny. Over time, David leaned into his interviewing skills (looking at you Dick Nixon) more than comedy, but his place in the comedy firmament is secure! As always find extra cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Frost? This clip is over 60 years old -- it's a great bit from That Was the Week that Was back in 1963 -- a consumer guide to religion -- and in true British comedy fashion David and crew take the piss out of everyone! https://youtu.be/tRZWyfERiCc?si=-iX3n5lUM0wEKr-n David followed TW3 with The Frost Report, another brilliant series. Here's a sample episode looking at "trends". https://youtu.be/dnD1WP5wt4s?si=hu2aVAVkkJk6j-oc David specialized in satire, but he also could be silly as in this appearance by the Beatles on his show. He persuaded the lads to play a shaggy version of his theme and they oblige!https://youtu.be/bVI7UWa5K3E?si=NFRMvcDR-oPNKDBB

Fifty years ago a break-in at the Watergate complex in Washington DC caused a cover-up that ultimately cost Richard Nixon the presidency. From the moment the hearings into the scandal were televised, there has been a massive audience for all things Watergate. There have been feature films, plays, podcasts, online comedy series, documentaries and TV dramas. Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode investigate the lasting legacy of Watergate on screen. Actor and comedian Harry Shearer has been playing Tricky Dicky since the very start of his career. He tells Mark about turning the president's tape recordings into verbatim comedy-drama Nixon's The One. Over a series of TV interviews the late Sir David Frost got President Nixon to admit that he had acted illegally and let the American people down. Mark talks to Michael Sheen who played the British broadcaster on both stage and screen in Frost/Nixon. Meanwhile, Ellen explores politically focused TV and film with the creator of The Thick of It and Veep, Armando Iannucci and screenwriter Liz Hannah, whose films The Post and Long Shot focus on journalism and politics. And journalist and broadcaster Martha Kearney gives her Viewing Notes. Producer: Marilyn Rust A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

Frank Luntz is one of the most famous pollsters in politics. Called "the Nostradamus of pollsters," by Sir David Frost, Luntz is perhaps best known for two things: the focus groups he conducts on TV and his work shaping political language on behalf of Republican politicians. For example, he somewhat notoriously counseled them to say "climate change" instead of "global warming" and "electronic intercepts" instead of "eavesdropping." In recent years, Luntz shifted from an avowedly partisan Republican into a more a heterodox thinker, and he has expressed remorse for some of his past work. Luntz butted heads Donald Trump before and after the 2016 election, but nonetheless, he also reportedly helped shape the administration's language on immigration. Amanda and Faiz planned to speak with Frank about voters' appetites for progressive policies, the state of the Republican party, and COVID-hesitancy, and they did – to an extent. Ten Years After is often considered one of the top and trailblazing blues rock acts of all- time – particularly due to a simply show-stopping performance at the first-ever Woodstock Festival in 1969. And from the beginning, the drummer that has kept the beat has been Ric Lee, who recently put pen to paper and wrote his autobiography, ‘From Headstocks to Woodstock.’ “It was something I’d always wanted to do and I actually started it more than 10 years ago, but kept stopping and starting for various reasons,” explains Lee. “Then a chance conversation with a friend in Los Angeles persuaded me to get it finished.” Comprised of 448 pages, the book is available for purchase directly via Lee’s website - ricleetya.com. And while the book touches upon all eras of his career, there are certain parts that stand out as favorites for the drummer. “My early days in bands in the Mansfield (my hometown) area, my stories about meeting people like Sir David Frost, Muhammad Ali, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Miles Davis and many others, and, of course, playing at Woodstock.” As a result, fans will get a better understanding of the Ten Year After’s contribution to rock music – in an era when TYA’s peers included some of the most renowned names of the classic rock genre. “Hopefully, it’ll also be an inspiration to any aspiring young musicians to keep going against all adversity to finally win through. And that they’ll need a little luck plus, importantly, the ability to recognize a potential direction that may lead to success.” It turns out that in by releasing ‘From Headstocks to Woodstock,’ Lee has been bitten by the book bug. “I’ve started my 2nd volume of my autobiography, but whether I’ll ever get it finished is anybody’s guess, but I aim to keep going with it. I also have a novel on the back burner.” And that’s not all concerning upcoming projects – “Ten Years After is planning a new bluesy album to be recorded for release later this year to follow on from the US release by Deko Entertainment of ‘A Sting In The Tale’ “deluxe version.” Tours of Europe and the USA certainly for 2022 and hopefully, depending on the Covid-19 situation and the changes that are bound to follow the pandemic, to maybe tour both continents in summer and autumn of 2021.”

Libby Purves meets writer and comedian Dawn French; Egyptologist Professor Joann Fletcher; Wilfred Frost, son of Sir David Frost and wing walker Nikita Salmon. Professor Joann Fletcher is based in the Department of Archaeology at the University of York where she teaches world mummification and funerary archaeology. Her book, The Story of Egypt, tells Egypt's ancient story by looking into the lives of its working people, as well as the pharaohs, to investigate this ancient society through its people's own words and personal belongings. The Story of Egypt is published by Hodder and Stoughton. Wilfred Frost is the son of the late broadcaster Sir David Frost. A new biography, That Was The Life That Was, by Neil Hegarty recounts the story of how the son of a Methodist minister became the most successful TV host in the world. He was the only person to have met and interviewed every British prime minister since Harold Wilson as well as seven US presidents including the disgraced post-Watergate Richard Nixon. That Was The Life That Was, Frost - The Authorised Biography by Neil Hegarty is published by WH Allen. Dawn French is a writer, comedian and actor who has appeared in shows including French and Saunders, The Comic Strip Presents ..., Murder Most Horrid, Vicar of Dibley, Jam and Jerusalem and Lark Rise to Candleford. Her new novel, According to Yes, is about an English nanny who shakes up a dysfunctional family in Manhattan. According To Yes is published by Michael Joseph. Dawn's show 30 Million Minutes is at the Vaudeville Theatre, London. Nikita Salmon is a wing walker with the Breitling AeroSuperBatics team. She is also a primary schoolteacher. She joined the seven-strong squad after replying to an advert in her local paper and now travels the world performing hair-raising aerial acrobatics. Strapped to the wings of a restored 1940s Boeing Stearman biplane, she performs aerobatic moves including formation loops, rolls, and the mirror - when one aircraft flies upside down and the other aircraft joins underneath. With John Wilson. Guy Garvey, Elbow's lead singer and guitarist, talks about the band's sixth studio album, The Take Off and Landing of Everything. Written during a period of change for the band, the lyrics cover the break-up of a long term relationship. Guy Garvey discusses how recent events inspired the band's song writing. 300: Rise Of An Empire is the sequel to 2007's 300, and - like the original - inspired by the work of graphic novelist Frank Miller, and with the same stylised, blood-spattered storyline. The sequel focusses on Themistokles, the Athenian general who - during the same three days as Thermopylae - led the Greek navy against the Persian navy, commanded by a brutal woman named Artemisia. Natalie Haynes reviews. The broadcaster Sir David Frost is to have a memorial stone in Westminster Abbey. The Dean of the Abbey gives John a tour of the site and David Frost's new neighbours, and explains how decisions about these memorials are reached. Producer: Olivia Skinner.

Sue Lawley's guest this week is the veteran broadcaster Sir David Frost - the only British television presenter to have interviewed seven American presidents and six British Prime Ministers who has, over the past five decades, become a broadcasting institution. The presenter once known as a scourge of the Establishment has become something of an establishment figure himself, noted for his formidable contacts book, his star-studded parties, and for his gentle but revealing interviewing style. Born in 1939, the youngest son of a Methodist minister and his wife, David was football and cricket-mad from an early age but with a burning ambition to go to Cambridge University. He arrived there in 1958, and threw himself into it, joining Footlights and editing Varsity and Granta. After Cambridge, Ned Sherrin saw him performing a comedy act in a Mayfair bar and hired him up to present the iconic satirical programme That Was The Week That Was. Other successful programmes followed including Frost Over Britain and The Frost Report. Breakfast with Frost ran for twelve years until early 2005. David is not retiring though and is due to present a new interview programme for Al-Jazeera International which will begin next Spring, and will also conduct occasional interviews for the BBC.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: The Dam Busters by Eric Coates Book: London A-Z Luxury: Sunday papers
