world of insects. Though there are only a handful of bugs and invertebrates that humans consider edible, productive, or beautiful, they are an essential element in any healthy ecosystem. All too often the ones that we don't derive beauty from or direct use from are considered an annoyance at best or actively destroyed and eradicated in all too many cases. It's long overdue that I highlight just how valuable insects are to out world and our own wellbeing on this show, and to help me to do that in this episode is Vicki Hird.  Vicki Hird is the Strategic Lead on Agriculture for The Wildlife Trusts UK and was until recently Head of the Sustainable Farming Campaign for Sustain: The Alliance for Better Food and Farming. She is also a published author and runs an independent consultancy. As an experienced and award-winning environmental campaigner, researcher, writer and strategist working for the past 30 years mainly on food, farming and environmental issues and solutions, Vicki has worked on government policy for many years authored ‘Perfectly Safe to Eat? The facts on food' in 2000, and has led teams at FoE, War on Want, WSPA and SAFE Alliance. She has co-founded many organisations including Sustain, Hackney Food Partnership and the Eating Better Alliance - and has written and campaigned extensively at a global, EU and national level. Vicki's other passion is insects and other invertebrates and she has a Masters in Pest Management and is a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society (FRES). Her new book – ‘Rebugging the Planet-The Remarkable Things that Insects (and Other Invertebrates) Do – and Why we need to love them more' will be our focus of today's conversation.   Vicki helps me to understand the significance of invertebrates in ecosystems, exploring their role, challenges, and conservation efforts. Together we go over how promoting biodiversity, sustainable practices, and community engagement is crucial to protect these essential species and support whole ecosystem health.  We also cover practical actions that anyone can take to support insect habitats in their area such as adopting habitat-friendly gardening practices, advocating for conservation policies, and understanding the impact of individual actions on invertebrates to maintain the delicate balance of nature.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Priority review vouchers for tropical diseases: Impact, distribution, effectiveness, and potential improvements, published by Rethink Priorities on January 5, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Suggested citation: Gosnell, G., Hu, J., Braid, E., & Hird, T. 2023. Priority review vouchers for tropical diseases: Impact, distribution, effectiveness, and potential improvements. Rethink Priorities. https://rethinkpriorities.org/publications/priority-review-vouchers. Funding statement: We thank Open Philanthropy for commissioning and funding this research report. The views expressed herein are not necessarily endorsed by Open Philanthropy. Editorial note The report evaluates the value and effectiveness of the United States' Tropical Disease Priority Review Voucher Program, which was initiated in 2007 to incentivize research and development for medical products targeting neglected tropical diseases. (While PRVs have since been legislated for purposes, we focus our attention on this application.) Specifically, we describe some of the program's history to date (e.g., past issuances, voucher sales/use dynamics, and evidence of gaming), the usage extent of PRV-awarded medical products, academic and anecdotal evidence of the program's incentive effect, and ways in which we think the program could be improved. We have tried to flag major sources of uncertainty in the report and are open to revising our views as more information becomes available. While preparing this report for publication, we learned that Valneva was awarded a PRV for developing the first Chikungunya vaccine in November 2023 (Dunleavy, 2023), but we did not incorporate this information in the report or associated spreadsheets. We are grateful for the invaluable input of our interviewees. Please note that our interviewees spoke with us in a personal capacity and not on behalf of their respective organizations. Executive summary We catalog information about the 13 issuances of Priority Review Vouchers (PRV) under the United States' Tropical Disease PRV Program and, for the seven cases with sufficient data, attempt to estimate the number of treatment courses per 1,000 relevant disease cases, or "use rate." Among the seven products with use rate estimates, we find three with high use rates (>100 courses per 1,000 cases), two have medium use rates (10-100), and two have low use rates (10 years, not all products marketed for that long achieve high use rates, and find diverse outcomes in use-rate trajectories, including sharp discontinuities and both upward and downward trends. Given that PRV recipients can either use or sell their voucher, we also explore the dynamics of how the PRVs' value is distributed among different types of players in the industry. We find that PRV sales proceeds go toward repayment for shareholders of small pharmaceutical companies or toward (promises of) further drug development for neglected tropical diseases. Large pharmaceutical companies that receive PRV awards tend to retain or use the voucher for faster FDA review of a profitable drug in their pipelines. Additionally, we review four academic studies that attempt to quantify the effectiveness of PRVs at inducing medical innovations for neglected tropical diseases. Based on their findings and our assessment of study quality, we think it is unlikely that the TD PRV Program had a large, consistent effect on R&D for tropical diseases, but that the results are potentially consistent with a small marginal effect. Additionally, there is historic anecdotal evidence of "gaming the system" - seeking a voucher for a drug that has already been developed and marketed outside of the US - though we think it is unlikely to continue to be an issue going forward given t...

On today's show we look at rebellions in France following the murder of a French-Algerian teenager by French police. Teenager Nahel was driving his vehicle when two police officers tried to pull him over for – what they say – were traffic violations. As Nahel tried to drive away, one of those officers shot into the vehicle, killing him. Multiple nights of unrest followed on the streets of France, and thirteen-hundred people voicing their anger were arrested in the process. We talk about the history of the violence of french policing and the current movement to end state terror in France with Alison Hird, the co-host and producer of Spotlight on France – a podcast on French society and history, as well as a journalist for Radio France Internationale. Good afternoon. An earlier video version failed to launch. Those interested in the video can view it here. We are currently immersed in a biodiversity crisis. Extinction is happening at an alarming rate. While none of us expects to return to a time where passenger pigeons nested in trees over saber-toothed tiger dens, we can slow extinction rates and even improve biological diversity where we live and work. To bring back birds for example, we need to start at the base of the food web by planting the plants and trees that support diverse invertebrate communities. The “bugs” in turn support birds and other insectivores. Vickie Hird's book “Rebugging the Planet” advocates this approach, and Saint Michael's College students in their Biology Senior Seminar learned directly from the author how these approaches can be applied on campus and beyond. Please enjoy this presentation, the Q&A that follows, and by all means visit our spectacular campus and enjoy four miles of Natural Area Trails linked from this site.

Hello everyone and welcome to Episode Sixty Eight!  Here we are in mid-August and I hope all of you remain safe and healthy out there. I've been working on re-siding and painting my garage all week, and it feels good to scrub the paint from my hands and strap into the podcasting chair for a bit. Now before we get to the show notes portion of the show notes, I want to take a minute to thank all of the show's patrons, including our newest Patreon supporters, Wes Redridge, and Lawrence Erickson!  Thank you so much, Wes and Lawrence!  And as always, a big thank you to all of the show's supporters – there are costs associated with running any entertainment channel and I am grateful to all of you for keeping this little boat afloat.  And if you're out there listening and you would like to kick in a few bucks, it's easy to do, you simply go to the So Much Pingle Patreon page. You can support the show for as little as three bucks a month – less than a fancy cup of coffee! You can also support the show via one-time contributions via PayPal or Venmo (please contact me via email to somuchpingle@gmail.com). Excellent photo courtesy of Ben Revell. Episode 68 happens to be another installment of Herp Science Sunday with my pal Dr. Alex Krohn and features Coen Hird, a doctoral candidate from the University of Queensland in Brisbane. This episode came about because Alex saw a tweet from Coen about a paper that he co-authored, concerning a certain species of pobblebonk, in this case the Northern Banjo Frog, Limnodynastes terrareginae.  Love that name, pobblebonk, and there are more than one species of frogs under the pobblebonk umbrella.  So anyway, Alex pings me right away about this paper as a great candidate for Herp Science Sunday, and Coen was keen to come on the show, so here we are.  The title of the paper is: "The role of environmental calcium in the extreme acid tolerance of northern banjo frog (Limnodynastes terraereginae) larvae" I've added a link so that you can click on the title and get access. And as always, you can drop me a note and I will send you a PDF copy of the paper. Also – the teaser at the beginning of the show is a short clip of some pobblebonks calling, and the clip comes from some recordings I purchased from a company called Wild Ambience. Long story short, I got 45 minutes of pobblebonks and cool birds and other nature sounds for about 8 bucks U.S.  So THIS is an unsolicited and yet much deserved plug from me – check out wildambience and maybe you'll hear something you like. Thank you Alex and Coen!  That was a fun show.  And thanks for listening everyone! And as always, please keep the comments and suggestions coming, and please take time to rate the show on your podcast platform! The show email is somuchpingle@gmail.com, and there's also a So Much Pingle group on Facebook, for discussion, comments, feedback, suggestions, herp confessions,, tips for herping better, etc. Cheers! Mike

We know that pesticides have an outsized impact on insects in the environment, particularly when broad-spectrum chemicals are used, killing nearly all the invertebrates they touch. If you've read a warning label on these, or many of the other garden, yard, or farm sprays available, you'll find cautions about keeping the contents of the container out of waterways or away from amphibians. But what about the other harms of human impacts? Like the destruction of habitat. The ever-increasing noise of industry. The lights that fill the sky with brightness throughout the night. And once we're aware of this mess, what can we do to start repairing the damage?
