Last year, Vagabon released her third album, Sorry I Haven't Called, which I've been listening to a lot. So I wanted to revisit an episode that I recorded with her back in 2020, about her breakout song "Water Me Down." The episode also features the voice of Eric Littmann, who co-produced the track. He passed away in June 2021, way too young. Vagabon's new album is dedicated to him. If you haven't heard this episode before, I hope you enjoy it: When Laetitia Tamko started making the second Vagabon album, she really wanted to produce the entire thing on her own. It would be a new sound, and producing was still a relatively new skill to her, but she wanted to tackle it head on, and do it all herself. On this song, though, "Water Me Down," Laetitia actually has a co-producer, Eric Littmann. It's the one exception to her otherwise entirely self-produced album. In this episode, she breaks down how she and Eric made the song, and why it was worth making that exception. For more, visit songexploder.net/vagabon.

My guest today is a Scottish comedian, television presenter and writer. While studying law at the University of Glasgow, she spent three months in North Carolina working with criminals on death row. After she graduated, she became a corporate lawyer, and soon started performing as a stand-up in the evenings. After seven years, she left the legal profession behind to become a full time comic, winning the Best New Scottish Comedian at the Real Radio Variety Awards in 2009. Since then she has become a fixture on British television and radio, a regular guest on Radio 4 panel shows The News Quiz and I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. In 2018 she was honoured by the University of Glasgow for her work in broadcasting as well as her campaigning on issues related to LGBT rights and mental health. “A lot of comics of my generation play games,” she once said. “To me it's a bigger issue than gaming: it's the art direction, it's the music, it's the expression. This week Tyler talks to voice actor and restorer Keith Wickham about his history with the Goons, about a show he has produced for Radio 4 called Raiders of the Lost Archive (which is being broadcast the day after this podcast goes out, on the 13th October) and a recently discovered Hancock's Half Hour featuring Peter Sellers. One of this country's most in-demand voice artists, Keith discovered Sellers at a tender age thanks to an indulgent schoolteacher and was immediately hooked. He soon abandoned his ambition to become a surgeon to focus on comedy and he recounts visits to watch classic radio comedy series being recorded, including I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue and Just A Minute. He also developed an interest and talent for restoring radio shows, and as well as The Goon Show one of his proudest achievements in this field has been the complete I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again. He talks about collaborating with people like Ted Kendall, Richard Harrison and Steve Arnold and how he went about sourcing material - old tapes, discs etc - and the challenges he faced. Raiders of the Lost Archive tells the story of the audio engineers, enthusiasts and hobbyists who have spent years tracking down lost radio shows, dusting them off, cleaning them up and releasing them back into the world. Of particular note is the recently unearthed Hancock's Half Hour episode 'The Marriage Bureau', long thought lost forever, which featured Peter Sellers in a one-off appearance standing in for Kenneth Williams. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001cxx2

In 1960 she responded to a newspaper article which invited ‘ugly' unknown girls to apply for the part of Jo in a film adaptation of Shelagh Delaney's play A Taste of Honey, to be directed by Tony Richardson. The film challenged many taboos of the time, including teenage pregnancy and interracial relationships. After the British film industry went into decline in the 1970s Rita started working in Europe. In 1988 she went back to her roots and played Celia Higgins in Carla Lane's Liverpool sitcom, Bread. Rita lives in London and is a passionate supporter of Liverpool Football Club. Andy Hamilton is a comedian, game show panellist, television director, comedy screenwriter, radio dramatist, novelist and actor and you have probably seen and/or heard him on Have I Got News For You, The News Quiz, QI or I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue. He's written for television shows including Drop the Dead Donkey and Outnumbered and is currently working on Kate & Koji for ITV with regular writing partner Guy Jenkin. Simon talks to Andy about his novels, specifically his latest Longhand, which is an especially unique book in that the entire thing is handwritten, perfectly reproducing Andy's original longhand manuscript. The story is of Malcolm George Galbraith, a Scotsman who is writing a letter to his wife - hence the longhand - to explain why he has to leave and never return. The explanation involves a vast, surprising, moving and funny dive into mythology. Simon chats with Andy about finding a publisher who was willing to reproduce his handwriting, how the unusual form supports and enhances the story being told and why it's probably a one-off. 2021.11.05 – 0309 – Intonation for ComediansOK this is a bit off topic, but let's spend a moment looking at intonation in respect of the delivery of a joke. One of the reasons something is funny is because it is unexpected. And that may mean you have to change your intonation to signpost the humour. So (and this is not the joke!) what do you call the situation when lots of cars are filling a road and none of them are moving? A ‘traffic jam' right? And you would naturally put the colour on the word “traffic” yes? Ok so look how you have to say that phrase when it appears as the punchline to this kids' joke: “Why did the girl smear peanut butter on the road? To go with the traffic jam!” To make it funny (?) you had to stress (and yes, I probably do mean to use that word here!) the “jam” part, so it balances with the “peanut butter” reference. Here's another example: “What musical instrument is found in the bathroom? A tuba toothpaste.” Here you say the punchline with the colour on “tuba”, whereas in the phrase “a tube of toothpaste” you'd highlight “toothpaste”. In a joke or witticism, surprise is partly because of the use of synonyms, say here: “My wife just ran off with my best friend. Oh boy do I miss him.” The punchline is the very last word, itself a synonym for “best friend” In this ‘intonation misdirection', the comic plays down the first reference to something so as not to draw attention to it. The new information is, contradictorily, left un-coloured so the second mention can be more of a surprise and the punchline funnier. This misdirection is because the comic is giving the impression that the gag is being adlibbed – that they themselves don't know the punchline and so they don't know to lift what later turns out to be significant details in it. Many good lines are ruined because the teller lacked the act of seeming to be spontaneous in their presentation and intonation. And a slightly more risqué example from the BBC Radio 4 series “I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue”: “Colin [the pianist on the panel show] tells us that it was Johnny Cash that helped him buy his first piano. He says back in the 1970s those condom machines were a licence to print money”. Audio recording script and show notes (c) 2021 Peter Stewart Through these around-5-minute episodes, you can build your confidence and competence with advice on breathing and reading, inflection andprojection, the roles played by better scripting and better sitting, mic techniques and voice care tips... with exercises and anecdotes from a careerspent in TV and radio studios. He has written a number of books on audio and video presentation and production (“Essential Radio Journalism”, “JournoLists”, two editions of “Essential Radio Skills” and three editions of “Broadcast Journalism”) and has written on voice and presentation skills in the BBC's in-house newspaper “Ariel”. Peter has presented hundreds of radio shows (you may have heard him on BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 4, Virgin Radio or Kiss, as well as BBC regional radio) with formats as diverse as music-presentation, interview shows, ‘special' programmes for elections and budgets, live outside broadcasts and commentaries and even the occasional sports, gardening and dedication programmes. He has read several thousand news bulletins, and hosted nearly 2,000 podcast episodes, and is a vocal image consultant advising in all aspects of voice and speech training for presenters on radio and TV, podcasts and YouTube, voiceovers and videocalls. The podcast title refers to those who may wish to change their speaking voice in some way. It is not a suggestion that anyone should, or be pressured into needing to. We love accents and dialects, and are well aware that how we speak changes over time. The key is: is your voice successfully communicating your message, so it is being understood (and potentially being acted upon) by your target audience? Drug addiction and the loneliness and mental health struggles that often precede it are highly talked about issues facing our country right now, but that wasn’t always the case. Back in 2006, when author Alicia Cook’s cousin, Jess, died of an overdose, death from drug addiction was often swept under the rug. While it’s become much more of a frontline policy talking point in the years since, people like Alicia are still determined, maybe now more than ever after the year we’ve had, to tell the stories of families plagued by the dual issues of drug addiction and mental health.  On this episode of The Sidewalk Talk podcast, Traci sits down with Alicia, author of the wildly beloved book of poems, Sorry I Haven’t Texted You Back, to discuss the biggest lessons Alicia’s learned about drug addiction and loss throughout her journey, the intention behind her book, and the policy changes around drug addiction and mental health both women hope to see happen in the near future.  Alicia’s journey of becoming a voice to this voiceless population of people affected by drug addiction really started when her cousin Jess overdosed at the age of 19. Alicia takes a few minutes to honor Jess during this conversation, sharing the other stories that have touched her the most in the process. Traci and Alicia’s conversation concludes with Alicia’s mission to give voice to the loneliness of our generation, and her word for you: everything is temporary, sometimes we just have to wait for the sun to come up on a new day. This is a vitally important conversation, don’t miss it.    Episode Milestones [00:07] Intro  [03:02] Meet Alicia  [06:50] Honoring Alicia’s cousin, Jess Cook   [11:33] The biggest lessons Alicia has learned on her journey  [14:56] The stories that have touched Alicia the most  [20:04] Alicia’s intention for Sorry I Haven’t Texted You Back  [26:55] How Alicia has fun amidst writing about a lot of heavy stuff  [29:46] Giving voice to loneliness  [34:35] Policy changes around drug addiction and mental health  [41:09] Alicia’s self-care routine  [45:26] Alicia’s word and poem for you [48:12] Outro    Resources Mentioned Sorry I Haven’t Texted You Back I hope My Voice Doesn’t Skip  Stuff I’ve Been Feeling Lately   Standout Quotes from the Episode “There wasn’t a voice for these families, and I inevitably became that voice.” —Alicia Cook  “It’s always so scary to put something so vulnerable and personal out there into the world. But what I’ve learned is, it’s necessary.” —Alicia Cook  “Dismantling the stigma—the number one weapon we have to do this is our storytelling.” —Alicia Cook   “Advocates are born the minute someone they love dies.” —Alicia Cook “Our mental health, whether we’re in a good state or a bad state, touches so many parts of our lives, and it’s impossible to compartmentalize, even though the world tells us we need to compartmentalize.” —Alicia Cook  “When someone wants to recover, and wants to begin that journey, there needs to be a bed for them. They need help immediately—they can’t wait another day.” —Alicia Cook   “Even if you feel like things can’t get any worse, that things won’t get better in your life, you need to just hold on, because everything is temporary. Richard Coles and Nikki Bedi are joined by Graeme Garden - one third of the Goodies along with Bill Oddie and the late Tim Brooke-Taylor. In the classic BBC television show the trio played agents for hire and would do "anything, anywhere, anytime". Astride their trusty ‘Trandem’ – a three-seater bicycle – they tackled a giant kitten, parodied westerns with a Cornish version called “Bunfight at the OK Tea Rooms” and were chased by a giant Dougal from Magic Roundabout. Graeme also created I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, the long-running Radio 4 show on which he is still a panellist and, with producer Jon Naismith, devised the Unbelievable Truth on Radio 4. Jojo Moyes is a novelist and journalist. Her books include the bestsellers Me Before You, After You and Still Me and The Girl You Left Behind. Me Before You has now sold over 14 million copies worldwide and was adapted into a major film starring Sam Claflin and Emilia Clarke. JoJo’s latest novel, The Giver of Stars, is based on a mobile library service launched by Eleanor Roosevelt in the 1930s. The Pack Horse Library Project was an initiative in which female volunteers on horseback delivered paperbacks to families in rural Kentucky who did not have access to books. Giles Clark is a conservationist who is taking on the illegal wildlife trade and helping to build a pioneering new bear sanctuary in Laos, Southeast Asia. This week we review - I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue (Series 72 Episode 3)This show started out as a spin-off from the BBC radio series I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again. The idea being that I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue was an unscripted version of the original.ISIHAC is a parody of the traditional panel show, with games designed to humiliate and confuse. Points come for show's lovely (and fictitious) scorer Samantha.Games include the self-explanatory "One Song to the Tune of Another"; mad word game "Cheddar Gorge"; "Sound Charades" (a game based on the TV show Give Us a Clue which differs in just three ways); "Word for Word", the opposite of word association; and the game based on the London Underground that is almost impossible to play - "Mornington Crescent".Legendary host Humphrey Lyttelton presided over the first 50 series. In the series that followed the host's death the role of chairman was handed over to Stephen Fry, Jack Dee and Rob Brydon. The trio took it in turns to present the show. Jack Dee's episodes were generally the best received by the audience, and thus Dee has been installed as the new host. The most regular players of the game are Barry Cryer, Graeme Garden, Tim Brooke-Taylor and the late Willie Rushton.Written by Iain Pattinson & Fraser Steele (Additional Material)Produced by John NaismithA BBC Production.I'm Sorry I Haven’t A Clue is available here: http://tiny.cc/mqm0gzThe Comedy Slab Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spreaker, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, Spotify and Youtube.Subscribe for a new episode each Monday.Get in touch - we're @ComedySlab on Twitter and ComedySlab on Facebook.

Lucy and Roifield are running on time this week, it is the summary which is late! Nosila opens proceedings with a kazoo provided by I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue. Then Kosmo is told to sod off – but he is still writing podcast summaries, honest. Lucy discusses Lily’s party at great length as she is unable to discuss Lilian telling Justin about Rob as the microphones were not working at the time. Anyway Lucy’s dissection of the mooning is as funny as her description of Spring Shimmer – a wonderful new lipstick used by Susan. Lucy does not think Rob has gone – like Arnie he will be back. Roifield cannot understand why Lilian and Justin’s discussion was not transmitted – but I think it would have added nothing to the drama and instead we get the satisfaction of Rob being given an unexpected bum’s rush. My theory is that the new editor has decided to clear the detritus of the SoC era as quickly as possible so that he can steam the ship SS Archers in a different direction – the writers were told to wrap up... Have You Seen..? The question to start all movie discussions. Yes, we know Kieran got the episode number wrong. He is a fool. New year, new show! Two movies from first-time directors that spark great conversation and debate as we tackle Whiplash and Ex Machina. PLUS: the Rock Band calibration tool, I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue, The Darkness, Supergirl, flawless VFX, flawed logic, the Turing test (kind of), technical hitches, tangents, Zoids, hungry babies and an octopus in a jar.

The Frequency of Laughter: A History of Radio Comedy

The Frequency of Laughter is a six-part history of radio comedy, covering 1975-2005, presented by journalist and radio fan Grace Dent. In each episode she brings together two figures who were making significant radio comedy at the same time, and asks them about their experiences. This is a conversational history that focuses on the people who were there and the atmosphere within the BBC and the wider comedy world that allowed them to make great radio - or not. This first edition features Graeme Garden and John Lloyd looking at radio comedy in the late 1970s. Graeme by this stage was an established figure, with his breakthrough show I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again morphing into I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, in addition to his work presenting Week Ending and as a panellist on shows such as A Rhyme In Time. John however had only joined the BBC Radio Comedy department in 1973, but he managed to make over 500 shows, co-creating The News Quiz, The Burkiss Way and Quote Unquote as he did so, before leaving for television. Grace asks them about the atmosphere within the Radio Comedy department and within the BBC, and how ideas actually go on air; they share their memories of former Heads of Light Entertainment Radio (as it was then called) Con Mahoney and David Hatch; and they talk about the lack of women in comedy at that time. The Frequency of Laughter is presented by Grace Dent, a journalist for The Independent, and is a BBC Radio Comedy production. Presenter ... Grace Dent Guest ... Graeme Garden Guest ... Lots of emails this week from listeners angered by BBC radio's lack of coverage of what was claimed to be a 50,000-strong demonstration against the coalition's cuts - even though it started just outside Broadcasting House. Was it, you wondered, evidence that the corporation's news coverage isn't as impartial as it claims? Also under discussion - the "N word". Is it ever acceptable to use it on the air? Roger talks to the producer of Radio 4's Archive on 4 documentary A History of the N Word and Radio 4's Editor of editorial standards, Roger Mahony. Elsewhere in the programme, the truth behind the story that Jack Dee threatened to resign from Radio 4's I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue; the release of a report on the quality and impartiality of BBC coverage of rural affairs; and the shipping forecast - beloved of Radio 4 listeners, but is it still used by those in peril on the sea? Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the veteran jazz musician and radio presenter Humphrey Lyttelton. To Radio 4 listeners, he's best known as Chairman Humph who has spent more than 30 years picking his bewildered way through the innuendo and mayhem of I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. But his first love is jazz - as a child, he was always fascinated by music and when he was a teenager it was Louis Armstrong who inspired him to take up the trumpet. Fittingly, Armstrong went on to hail Humph as 'Britain's top trumpetman'. Now aged 85, Humph is still recording and touring with his band and says that he finds he's kept awake at night by new ideas for music they can play together.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs] Favourite track: That's My Home by Louis Armstrong Book: Collected works by James Thurber Luxury: A keyboard
