Today, Danny speaks to actor, writer, voice artist, comedian and impressionist, Steve Nallon. In this lively episode, Steve shares some great stories about his time working on Spitting Image and with Janet Brown, Mike Yarwood, Rory Bremner, Rik Mayall and scores of other stars. He explains how he developed his iconic Margaret Thatcher impersonation. Steve shares why, despite being such a prolific performer he actually prefers anonymity over fame. They also discuss the personal and professional adjustments those involved in the entertainment industry make as they age. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS As a kid Steve had a vivid imagination and loved acting out the characters he made up, but he was so shy he couldn´t perform in front of others. Even well-known comedians like Les Dawson worried about “dying on their arse”. There are comedians that say funny things, those that do funny things and those that simply are funny. Steve explains the difference. When an audience does not laugh, it feels incredibly personal. Spitting Image became so culturally significant that the FT used photos of the show's puppet versions instead of real politicians. The Spitting Image puppets were powerful. Some stars even found themselves becoming more like the puppet version. Most `politicians develop a persona that they use in public. Impressions are a caricature, just the essence of a person. As you get older doing impressions of certain people becomes harder. Writing about things that catch your attention and things you have experience of works well e.g. Steve using Maggie Thatcher in a ghost story. From a certain angle the statue of Nelson looks like he is pleasuring himself. Steve explains why he has always resisted appearing on TV as himself. BEST MOMENTS “I always was a performer. As a kid .. I would become all these different people.” “What didn't come naturally was performing in front of an audience.” “You die on your arse.” “Be open to anything, and everybody…that was the BBC training in 1975.” “I did attempt Trump, but it was so bad they cut it.” “I was walking down Brewer St a couple of days ago and there was only one sex shop.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.nallon.com HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Today I am speaking to Rory Bremner, the famous British impressionist turned presenter, who made his name with his impersonation of Tony Blair which was so near the knuckle that the then Prime Minister actually asked him to write his speeches. However, beneath the facade, Rory has always struggled with his emotions and admits to suffering from big highs and lows. He was diagnosed with depression which hit him at unexpected moments and for many years, his ADHD and dyspraxia were ignored which in turn ended up effecting his movement, coordination and concentration. He ended up being diagnosed with the ADHD whilst he was making a BBC documentary and described it as ‘like having a brain like a pinball machine'. He also referred to his symptoms as ‘failures', which they're obviously not, but it's these moments that are the most powerful as they show a true insight into the way he struggled to come to terms with the diagnosis. In this episode Rory speaks candidly about how he has learned to turn his ADHD to his advantage and why lists are his life line. As the General Election campaign hots up, two new political satires have been unveiled- ITV's Newzoids and Channel 4's Ballot Monkeys, with the former reuniting some of the vocal and production talent of Spitting Image. Radio 4's Dead Ringers and the Vote Now Show are also back on air, not to mention election specials for satirical stalwarts Rory Bremner, Jack Dee and Charlie Brooker. But despite this crowded market, is satire, as Spectator columnist and satirical author Toby Young would have it, headed for an early grave? Steve is joined by Rory Bremner himself to give satire a health check ahead of the General Election, in discussion with Toby Young and the Assistant Editor of the New Statesman, Helen Lewis.Pay-TV broadcaster Sky has reported a 20% rise in operating profit helped by strong demand across Europe. On Start the Week Andrew Marr asks how the arts tackle politics and current affairs. The performer Rory Bremner turns his comedic eye to opera, in an updated version of Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld. Originally written to satirise Napoleon III's Paris, Bremner draws present day parallels with a spin-filled, celebrity-obsessed world. For the last 30 years the film maker Peter Kosminsky has turned conflicts from Bosnia, to the Falklands, and Israel/ Palestine, as well as the story of New Labour, into drama and documentaries for television. In 1939 the Whitechapel gallery in London was the space chosen to show Picasso's overtly political work, Guernica. The gallery's present director Iwona Blazwick talks about how artists have reflected the political and present day concerns. And the singer/ songwriter Sarah Gillespie argues that the key to a good protest song is to harness the experience of the individual. producer: Katy Hickman.
