Fifty years ago a break-in at the Watergate complex in Washington DC caused a cover-up that ultimately cost Richard Nixon the presidency. From the moment the hearings into the scandal were televised, there has been a massive audience for all things Watergate. There have been feature films, plays, podcasts, online comedy series, documentaries and TV dramas. Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode investigate the lasting legacy of Watergate on screen. Actor and comedian Harry Shearer has been playing Tricky Dicky since the very start of his career. He tells Mark about turning the president's tape recordings into verbatim comedy-drama Nixon's The One. Over a series of TV interviews the late Sir David Frost got President Nixon to admit that he had acted illegally and let the American people down. Mark talks to Michael Sheen who played the British broadcaster on both stage and screen in Frost/Nixon. Meanwhile, Ellen explores politically focused TV and film with the creator of The Thick of It and Veep, Armando Iannucci and screenwriter Liz Hannah, whose films The Post and Long Shot focus on journalism and politics. Every creative starts somewhere. Thrilled to have writer, producer, director Liz Hannah (The Post, Long Shot, Mindhunter) back on Pop Culture Confidential. Liz Hannah is currently involved in two of the most critically acclaimed, true crime series on television. She is a writer and exec producer on ‘The Dropout', about disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes (Amanda Seyfried) and creator, exec producer & showrunner on ‘The Girl from Plainville', based on the true story of Michelle Carter (Elle Fanning) the teen who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the notorious ‘texting-suicide' case. Inspired by the true story of Michelle Carter's unprecedented "texting-suicide" case, The Girl from Plainville starring Elle Fanning is a Hulu miniseries that explores Carter's relationship with Conrad Roy III and the events that led to his death. Show creator Liz Hannah (The Post, Mindhunter) talks about tackling the true crime case: "I think the reaction from the media, the reaction from the general public towards Michelle and towards the case was very vitriolic, very much making her the villain... I'm very interested in the gray area of people and morality and ethics... as you start to peel away the layers, you realize just how little was talked about of what actually happened in this case, and what actually happened between these two people and the sort of mutual toxicity between the two of them." Liz goes on to talk about how to handle the pressures of writing: "I think I would say just don't take things too seriously, and that doesn't mean that you shouldn't take it seriously.... I take my job very seriously. I feel incredibly fortunate and incredibly lucky to have this job and to be able to tell the stories that I've gotten to tell, and hopefully will continue to tell. I think earlier in my career, everything felt like the beginning or end of the world, and that's just not a good way to be creative at all." All the President's Minutes is a podcast where conversations about movies, journalism, politics and history meet. Each show we use the seminal and increasingly prescient 1976 film All The President's Men as a portal, to engage with the themes and the warnings of the film resonating since its release. For minute 131, I join writers of The Post, writer-producer Liz Hannah (writer of The Long Shot ) and Josh Singer (Academy Award-winning co-writer of Spotlight ). Liz, Josh and I discuss showing The Post in front of Woodward and Bernstein, compare Hanks and Robards "Bradlee" performances and finally the most "movie" moment of the entire film. *About Liz Hannah* Liz Hannah is the writer of The Post , directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks. The original screenplay was nominated for a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award. The Post was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, as well as Best Actress for Meryl Streep. Along with co-writer, Josh Singer, Hannah was the recipient of both the 2018 Writer’s Guild’s Paul Selvin Award and the 2018 Humanitas Prize for feature drama. Originally from New York, Hannah moved to Los Angeles to attend graduate school at AFI. After graduating with an MFA in Producing, Hannah spent the next few years working in development at Denver & Delilah before eventually leaving to write full time. Hannah’s script for The Post was ranked second on the 2016 Black List after being purchased by Amy Pascal’s Pascal Pictures two days before the US Presidential election. Currently, Hannah is developing a female anthology series for UCP, a limited series for Amazon with Bradley Whitford and Amy Pascal based on the book, The Mercury 13, and a feature entitled, The Only Plane In The Sky , for MGM, which was adapted from the Politico article by Garrett M. Graff. *Twitter:* @itslizhannah ( https://twitter.com/itslizhannah ) *About Josh Singer:* Josh Singer (born in 1972) is an American film and TV writer and maker, whose work incorporates composting and creating scenes of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, The West Wing, Lie to Me and even the FOX sci-fi arrangement Fringe. In 2006, he earned a nomination for a WGA award. There aren’t many first-time screenwriters who sit down to write a script, and soon find themselves on set with Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, bringing that script to life. That’s what happened to Liz Hannah on the back of her gripping screenplay for The Post, about America’s first female newspaper publisher, Katharine Graham, and her role in exposing one of the most notorious government cover-ups in US history.Co-written by Josh Singer, the Steven Spielberg-directed film went on to become one of 2017’s most celebrated dramas – a nail-biting account of a woman facing an impossible decision, set in the 1970s but with a message relevant to our own era of fake news and democracy under attack. We spoke to Liz about the movie’s journey from her kitchen table to Oscars acclaim, how she shaped the feminist story at the movie’s heart, and whether or not she foresees herself ever writing a spiritual sequel to The Post, about Donald Trump’s battles with our current media.Script Apart is a podcast about the first-draft secrets behind great movies. Each episode, the screenwriter behind a beloved film shares with us their initial screenplay for that movie. We then talk through what changed, what didn’t and why on its journey to the big screen. All proceeds go to Black Minds Matter UK, the NHS Charities Covid-19 Appeal and the Film and TV Charity.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek, with music from Stefan Bindley-Taylor. You can follow Script Apart on Twitter and Instagram. You can also email us on thescriptapartpodcast@gmail.com.
For this very special episode we are joined by screenwriter Liz Hannah (“The Post,” “Long Shot,” “Mindhunter”). We find out why she loves the franchise (especially “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation”), her appreciation for Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa and what she wants out of the two new movies. She also talks about working with David Fincher. And we also get Liz – and her husband – to rank Tom Cruise’s hairstyles!
WE'RE BACK! We were gone for a while so we have decided to return to the realm of regular podcasting with a big one. Screenwriter extraordinaire Liz Hannah (The Post, Long Shot, Mindhunter) joins us to talk about Michael Mann's extraordinary whistleblower drama THE INSIDER. There is so much to dig in with this one from Pacino bringing the Heat(get it), Russel Crowe's status a movie star, its seven Academy Awards nominations, and an absolutely cracking screenplay based on true events which we were more than excited to get to talk to Liz about. It was such a blast having Kenny back and Liz as a guest so we went long on this one cause there are no corporate lackeys to edit us. We hope you enjoy!
In our first lockdown era episode, I connect with Golden Globe nominated screenwriter and producer Liz Hannah (The Post, Long Shot, All the Bright Places) to talk about Van Morrison's classic 'Astral Weeks', as well as how the current situation has impacted Liz and her media diet, how she's listening to music at the moment, iPods, puzzles, streaming services vs DVDs and much more.
Sara repeatedly claims that one-woman TV and film factory Liz Hannah is 22 years old, despite Liz's claims to the contrary. Liz is an incredible writer (The Post, Long Shot, All The Bright Places). Sara asks the hard questions, like whether it's more emotionally draining to write something like episodes of "Mindhunter" or to deal with the fact that her cat hates her puppy. Jesse Draper is the founding partner of Halogen Ventures and the creator and host of Emmy nominated TV series, The Valley Girl Show. Jesse joins me this week to talk about growing up as a 4th generation venture capitalist, and how she has shifted in her career from talk show host to venture capitalist, using both platforms to support and highlight women in tech. Jesse talks about the differences that she sees between men and women when pitching, the importance of networking, and how we can all be more badass in and out of the board room. What You Will Hear in This Episode: Jesse’s strong drive and ability to consistently network led her to an extremely successful acting career. She would offer to do the work for the writers and directors and made her name known as someone that would show up, be good to work with, and get the job done well. Jesse wanted to spotlight more women in technology and female CEO’s and created Halogen Ventures to change the game in that arena. Jesse’s parents encouraged her to look at things as a business, and that hustle stayed with her throughout her whole career. Her TV show ‘The Valley Girls’ and Rocking Women Series created a space for Jesse to interview women in technology and hold prestigious roles in startups. Diversity is extremely important at Halogen Ventures in every way. They have a diverse make up of age, ethnicity, viewpoints, etc. and always have several females on the executive team. Badass females also recognize the contribution of males, and find ways that both genders can work well and compliment each other in business. Jesse’s advice to females out there looking to pitch or even just sell themselves and their product even better: Don’t apologize and feel like everything has to be perfect. Know your market size. Be confident about the possibility of being even bigger than your vision. Consider that you can create a billion dollar business. Quotes: “I think networking is really the key to success.” “You need to at least act like a badass.” “No successful person feels like a success, but you have to just fake it in some way.” “Any investment you make in a female will pay off way more so.” “Diversity breeds success in every way.” Mentioned: Halogen Liz Hannah Jesse Draper LinkedIn

Hi everyone! It’s Tuesday, and today we’re welcoming back One Movie Spouse to the podcast, with a review of a film she’s been wanting to see for a very long time. In many ways, the film reminds me of how she and I first met, and how unlikely we seemed to so many people. Of course, I wasn’t able to watch it with her, so I’ll just have to assume that everything works out fine. For a few other recent reviews from One Movie Spouse, check out MISS AMERICANA (Episode #725), BOMBSHELL (Episode #701), and LITTLE WOMEN (Episode #673). Before the review, we’ll have a promo from our good friends at the How I Met Your Friends podcast. Every episode, Julie and Kathleen examine one episode of each hit sitcom, exploring the hidden connections and easter eggs within each episode. Don’t miss their recent guest review for CATS (Episode #699), along with the reason they got stuck with the review. Connect with us over social media to continue the conversation. Here we go! ///// > ///// Hello! It’s me Amy, AKA One Movie Spouse, back for another review. MWAH! A week-long break from school has me catching up on films I've been dying to see! Today’s film features two of my favorite actors, Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron. Listen to my review, then catch me on Twitter @OneMovieSpouse to keep the conversation going. Here we go! Today’s movie is LONG SHOT (2019), directed by Jonathan Levine and written for the screen by Dan Sterling and Liz Hannah, based on a story by Dan Sterling. The film follows the unlikely relationship between two old neighbors: a shlubby journalist named Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogen) and a high-powered diplomat Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron). This comedy is about politics, social status, compromise, and above all else, trusting your heart *and* your gut. No spoilers! LONG SHOT is both a political comedy and a romantic comedy rolled into one. The film opens to Fred as a passionate and unapologetic journalist, reporting on issues that matter to the world, when his newspaper is bought out by a large media conglomerate. Highly relevant to real-life today! Fred sees himself as a voice for the voiceless. We turn then, like most romcoms, to introducing the highly influential Charlotte, who never stops working. They couldn’t be any more different, and are living in two different social spheres, when an unexpected event brings them together. I enjoy both of these actors very much and was pleased from the very beginning of the film. They make their somewhat cliché opposites attract story seem believable and enjoyable! In addition to a fun love story, LONG SHOT also tackles some highly relevant issues today. Fred, as a journalist, is highly passionate about the environment, which Charlotte also shares, but while Fred is an idealist, Charlotte is a realist. Throughout the film, compromise is a key theme. Compromise (right or wrong) happens all the time as deals are negotiated and evolve. Compromises are also often disappointing and highly frustrating. Charlotte is under immense pressure as a diplomat to negotiate a compromise, which challenges Fred’s idealism. Charlotte and Fred’s relationship becomes a small mirror examining international relationships and our own decisions and compromises. This film also had an excellent supporting cast adding to the richness of their story. Lance (O’Shea Jackson, Jr.) is Fred’s best friend, who wants nothing more than to see his bro succeed and be happy in life! His presence throughout the film is reassuring, and made you feel like you were one of their friends. Maggie Millikin (June Diane Raphael) does an excellent job in her role as a personal assistant to Charlotte, giving just the right amount of tension and skepticism toward Fred as he re-enters Charlotte’s life. If you’ve watched any political comedies or dramas, such as “Veep” or “Scandal”, you know there are NO secrets allowed for those who serve the public. LONG SHOT generally keeps a nice balance between political and romantic comedy, but about two-thirds into the film, an event occurs where drama overtakes the comedy very abruptly. I am ok with it, but it was jarring upon initial viewing, and a little off-tone. After that, though, my sappy side took over and just wanted them to be genuinely happy! LONG SHOT is a political and romantic comedy, about status, compromise, and trust. Like me, I hope you find yourself cheering for an elite woman and an ordinary man against all odds. Fans of Seth Rogen, Charlize Theron, and “underdog” films should really enjoy this film! Keep an eye on that R-rating, though, if you plan on watching with teenagers, to avoid some potentially uncomfortable moments. Rotten Tomatoes: 81% (CERTIFIED FRESH) Metacritic: 67 One Movie Punch: 8.0/10 LONG SHOT (2019) is rated R and is currently playing on HBO and DIRECTV.

This summer’s film Long Shot is an entire movie about how speechwriter and speaker relate to each other. And it has something to teach us about making that relationship work — and how the key ingredient is time. If you're thinking of catching it, the movie's a lot of fun, even if (or probably because) it isn't exactly a documentary portrayal of political speechwriting. Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen are great, and their chemistry is super (although, ahem, that's a line I don't recommend speechwriters cross with their clients). Links: Most important, props to Long Shot's writers, Dan Sterling and Liz Hannah. This episode name-checks a bunch of movies and shows, including Long Shot, Speechless, The Good Wife, BrainDead, The Good Fight and House of Cards. With all that's been happening over the last eight years, what do you think might happen to a romantic/political comedy that was written while it was still Obama's first term in office? In this episode of The 21st Rewrite, we review the development of Dan Sterling's 2011 screenplay ‘Flarsky' into the 2019 film 'Long Shot', co-written by Dan Sterling and Liz Hannah and starring Seth Rogan and Charlize Theron. *** Want to comment, get news and join episode discussions? Liz Hannah shares her philosophy of storytelling on today's episode. Not only is she a kind, humble human, but her work is already making waves in the industry. She genre hops because she's that good and has impeccable taste in TV (ahem, "Killing Eve" - need I say more?). Liz welcomes collaboration and believes that most of the writing process happens away from the computer screen. Quick moment of silence for all the films brave enough to take on Avengers Endgame's second weekend at the box-office. *Thanos Voice* I hope they remember you. Now with that out of the way, we have to say Long Shot starring Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen is actually a pretty good comedy. The trailers for this film don't do it justice as they make it seem like just another dudebro fantasy film about a man who gets to romance the woman of his dreams whose league he is nowhere near. The trailers make this seem like all the other movies we've seen like it. But Long Shot isn't that film. Thanks should probably go to Theron and writer Liz Hannah for making sure Theron's character Charlotte Field has her own agency and that her character growth isn't centered on propping up Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogen). Long Shot is probably going to get slaughtered at the box-office this weekend but that doesn't mean it's not worth checking out. Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode! Rundown: Earlier this year, director Steven Spielberg read a spec script by 31-year-old Liz Hannah about the Pentagon Papers and The Washington Post’s decision to publish those papers after a court injunction. He dropped everything he was doing and started filming, because he knew how timely it was. The movie, called appropriately enough The Post, stars Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Bob Odenkirk and a bunch of other actors that make you say, “Hey!
