SynopsisRugby is a style of football that originated in England at Rugby School and was played at British public boy's schools during the 19th century. It's also the name of a tone poem written by Swiss composer Arthur Honegger that premiered in Paris at the Théâtre des Champes-Elysées on today's date in 1928 at the first concert of the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris. In describing his tone poem, Honegger wrote: “I'm very fond of soccer, but rugby is closer to my heart. … I'm more keenly attracted by rugby's rhythm, which is savage, abrupt, chaotic and desperate. It would be wrong to consider my piece as program music. It simply tries to describe in musical language the game's attacks and counterattacks, and the rhythm and color of a match.”Now, you would think in such a slam-bang contact sport as rugby that Honegger would employ a big battery of percussion instruments, but — surprise — they are totally absent in his score. Not to worry. There is plenty of rough ‘n' tumble action between the strings, woodwinds and brass, but fortunately no protective headgear is required by either the performers or the listeners.Music Played in Today's ProgramArthur Honegger: Rugby

My guest for this episode is Paul Merkelo. Paul is a multi-tasker. In addition to his duties as the Principal Trumpet of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, Paul is also a highly sought-after soloist. He has traveled the world performing both old and new works and recently completed his fifth solo recording project. And in his spare time, Paul is on the faculty of two universities - McGill University in Montreal and The Music Academy of The West in Santa Barbara. All in a day's work. Check out what Paul has to say about the truth about Joey Tartell, Illinois vs Montreal, the viability of a career as an orchestral trumpet player, full-time gigs vs freelancing, balancing the demands as a principal player and a soloist, managing your practice, mixing things up, making a statement with your playing, transcending technique, honoring the work, keeping things fresh and challenging, the role of the ego, and so much more. “The thing about music, there's this nurturing of our souls.” Karen Donnelly, principal trumpet for the National Arts Centre Orchestra, is our guest on What's Your Forte this week! She and Kathryn talk about touring Canada, the moment she realized the depth to which music could impact you, the best gig she's ever seen and some key advice for the next generation of players. Karen Donnelly was unanimously appointed principal trumpet of the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada in October 1999, following three successful seasons as acting principal trumpet, and continues to enjoy playing with this wonderful ensemble. A native of Regina, Saskatchewan, Karen started the trumpet in elementary school, which propelled her into a Bachelor of Arts in Music at the University of Regina, followed by a Master of Music degree at McGill University. While freelancing in Montreal, she quickly became in demand, performing with many ensembles in the area including the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal. Karen has given master classes and workshops in Europe, China, the United States, the United Kingdom and coast-to-coast in Canada. She is part of the coaching team for both the trumpet section and chamber music for Canada's National Youth Orchestra. In 2002, she joined the teaching staff at the University of Ottawa, and has been assisting with their Orkidstra program, inspired by Sistema, since 2009. Most recently, Karen spearheaded the Canadian Women's Brass Collective. This group of talented musicians presented concerts, master classes and lectures in Toronto during January 2019 over a five-day conference to great acclaim. During the pandemic, the collective curated an extensive series of online sessions to support musicians to create healthy and effective practice strategies.

Synopsis While many great composers have also been great conductors, this can be the exception rather than the rule. On today's date in 1959, the American composer Ned Rorem tried his hand at conducting the premiere of one of his own compositions, a chamber suite entitled “Eleven Studies for Eleven Players.” Rorem recalled: “I learned that the first requisite to becoming a conductor is an inborn lust for absolute monarchy, and that I, alone among musicians, never got the bug. I was terrified. The first rehearsal was a model of how NOT to inspire confidence. I stood before the eleven players in all my virginal glory, and announced: ‘I've never conducted before, so if I give a wrong cue, do try to come in right anyway.'” Fortunately for Rorem, his eleven musicians were accomplished faculty at Buffalo University, and, despite his inexperience, Rorem certainly knew how his new piece should sound. Rorem's Suite incorporated a few bits recycled from music he had written for a successful Broadway hit—Tennessee Williams' “Suddenly Last Summer”—plus a bit from an unsuccessful play entitled “Motel” that never made it past a Boston tryout. Rorem's own tryout as a conductor convinced him to stick to composing, although he proved to be a fine piano accompanist for singers performing his own songs. As for “Eleven Studies for Eleven Players,” it's gone on to become one of Rorem's most-often performed chamber works.
