Join Ellen & special guest, evolutionary biologist and herpetologist Dr. Mark D. Scherz, for a look through the magnifying glass at miniaturized animals. Our guest studies species who have shrunk down to incredibly small sizes, like frogs and chameleons who could gather on the tip of your finger, and he has some fascinating insights into why and how animals get so darn itty bitty and what could be stopping them from getting any itty bittier. We discuss silliness in scientific names, assuming a spherical frog in a vacuum, chameleons called B. nana, whether jawbones spark joy, how many brain cells you really even need anyway, and so much more.Links:Learn more about Mark and his work on his website: http://www.markscherz.com/Check out Mark's podcast, SquaMates: http://squamatespod.com/Follow Mark on Tumblr: https://markscherz.tumblr.com/Follow Mark on BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/markscherz.bsky.socialFor more information about us & our podcast, head over to our website!Follow Just the Zoo of Us on BlueSky, Facebook, Instagram & Discord!Follow Ellen on BlueSky!
Today's class is dedicated Leilui Nishmat Yitzhak ben Chana, Mr. Irving Missry by his daughters. בְּהֵמָה דַּקָּה טְהוֹרָה אוֹמֶרֶת. The Behema Daka, the small animal such as the sheep and goat, says מִי כָמֹכָה בָּאֵלִם יי מִי כָּמֹכָה נֶאְדָּר בַּקֹּדֶשׁ נוֹרָא תְהִלֹּת עֹשֵׂה פֶלֶא: (שמות טו יא) Who is like You in the strong ones Hashem, who is like You, glorified in holiness, awesome in His praises, Doer of wonders Why is this the song of the docile, kosher animals? Rav Chaim Kanievsky, in his commentary to Perek Shira, says that sheep and goats are chased more than any other animals. As is explained in Vayikra Raba 27,5, that's why Hashem uses them for Korbanot. They're chased and they're dear to Hashem. And Hashem saves those that are chased, which is a hint to the Jewish people, who are constantly chased by the goyim . The Midrash Tanhuma Toldot siman 5 says that one of the Caesars told Yehoshua, Look how powerful the sheep is, that he can stand among 70 wolves! To which the Rabbi answered, No, the sheep is not great, but Gadol Hu HaRo'eh, the Shepherd is great, that protects the sheep. That is the song of these sheep and goats, and it's the message of the Jewish people- that you have a great Shepherd that does wonders and saves you and protects you. There is a famous Gemara in Masechet Yoma 69B that says God is Gadol Gibor V'Nora h, great powerful and awesome. It says because when the Bet Hamikdash was destroyed, the Anshei Knesset Gedolah said, Where is God's strength? Where is God awesomeness ? To which the Gemara says, the Anshei Knesset Gedola put it back because they said, You know where God's awesomeness is? If not for the fear of Hashem, we wouldn't survive. You think it's the powerful armies that we have, the weapons that we have, the intelligence that we have? No, it's that God instills fear. That's what stops them from attacking. Nora tehilot, He is awesome in His praise, which means He's awesome. He's powerful. This actually goes back to Yaakov's Avinu in Parashat Bereshit 35,5. After Shimon and Levi wiped out the city of Shchem, Yaakov Avinu said, " What are you doing? You're going to cause them to attack me?!" Then it says they traveled and there was fear of God on those cities that surrounded them. They did not chase Bnei Yaakov. The Baal Turim says the words and they traveled show up twice, teaching us that when the Jewish people traveled in the desert, they were similar to Yaakov Avinu's bed, with the tribes all around it, to tell us that just like the fear of God was around the cities due to the zechut of Yaakov, so too, when we traveled in the desert, we were not attacked. We were a nation traveling the desert for 40 years. Why weren't we attacked? The fear of God. The miracles of the desert continue in our times as well, but we just don't see it as openly. The Targum Yonatan ben Uziel adds on words. He says, they traveled from there, and adds the words " praising and praying to Hashem," which means they praised Hashem for the success in the war in Shchem, and they prayed for continued success. Therefore, There was a fear of God instilled in the people around them. That's one approach as to why this is the song of the animals- because of the wonders of Hashem's protection. The Sefer Sivtei Raanot give an additional, advanced explanation, in his commentary on Perek Shira. He says that these animals are used for Korbanot , and through the Korban , we announced the three fundamentals of our religion. It says in Sefer Ikarim that there are three fundamentals of our religion: - The existence of God - Torah Min Hashamayim, that the Torah was given to us from heavens. And, - Hashem's Hashgacha Pratit. Where do we see that in the korban? Firstly, the Korban goes to Hashem, Who created the world. That means God exists. Secondly, we are doing this as Hashem directed us to in the Torah. That's Torah min Hashamayim. Lastly, the Hashgacha Pratit is that we believe that everything we did to the animal should have happened to us as a punishment for our sins. Thus, Hashem is watching. We want to protect ourselves, so we bring Korbanot. That's why these animals sing the song of Mi Kamocha B'El Hashem- Who is like You amongst the powerful ones , that describes God's strength, Mi Kamocha Nedra B'kodesh/ Who is glorified in holiness, that He gives reward to the Sadikim and he punishes the Resha'im . That's what they were saying. This is the Mi Kamocha in the fact that Hashem punished the Egyptians at Keriat Yam Suf. As powerful as He is, He controlled himself and meted out justice at the right time.. And finally, Norah Tehilot/God is awesome was the awesome site of Matan Torah where everyone saw that there was nothing else but God and everything else is nonsense. The animals that are part of the Korban system testify to these three principles of our faith, through their song.
This episode is part of our oncology mini-series on VETchat by The Webinar Vet. She explains the typical day in the life of an oncology nurse, including working with new cases and restaging patients. Nicola also talks about the importance of managing nausea in cancer patients and the medications used to prevent and treat it. They emphasise the collaborative approach between veterinary nurses, veterinarians, and owners in providing the best care for animals with cancer. Finally, they discuss the challenges of end-of-life care and the importance of communication and support during this difficult time.
Reduce. Refine. Replace. These are the three Rs of animal research. The intent is to reduce the number of animals used, refine methods to be efficient and humane and replace animals with other models where possible. This cc: Life Science episode is sponsored content, courtesy of MediLumine.I talked to Stephen Marchant, Founder and CEO of MediLumine about the importance of animal research, how imaging in small animals is different from humans and innovations that support the 3Rs of laboratory animal sciences. While the FDA no longer requires the testing of all new drugs in animal models prior to clinical trials, for some drugs, the requirement may stand. Animal research has been essential for many advances in human health and will surely remain relevant in the quest to discover new treatments in the future. As compassionate beings, we want to help our fellow humans whenever possible. When a child has cancer or a mother with a diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer's tells her children that at some point she may not recognize them (or they her), no options will be left unexplored to look for and find solutions and those options likely include some research using animal models to better understand disease. The animal technicians and scientists working in laboratory animal sciences have a passion for developing therapies and treatments for human disease but also for taking care of animals. For those interested to know more, Stephen recommends the GetReal Podcast by Dr Cindy Buckmaster to truly appreciate the reality of this and what it is like to work with laboratory animals in the life sciences. In vivo imaging is used to better understand disease progression or response to treatment, and it is one aspect of research that isn't likely to be replaced soon. The development of novel contrast agents allows scientists to visualize structures such as tumors or vasculature much deeper in the organism thus precluding the use of visual inspections and use of a caliper to measure tumor size. This breakthrough is built in to MediLumine's tag line ‘Vision without Sacrifice'. Imaging structures in a mouse, whether by MRI or PET scan is very different from imaging in humans. The structures are (obviously) much smaller. What I hadn't realized previously is how the small size requires longer measurements to get the desired resolution. Typical contrast agents like CT contrast agents used in the clinic are rapidly cleared making it more difficult for small animal micro-CT systems to generate high resolution images with these contrast agents. Stephen explained how the development of contrast agents like Fenestra HDVC, allows improved imaging of mouse organs with in vivo micro-computed tomography (CT).Depending on the goal of an experiment, modalities like MRI or CT can provide good resolution which allows researchers to calculate, for example, the volume of an object such as a tumor. Other modalities, such as optical imaging, are preferred when sensitivity is important. Bioluminescent reporters can sensitively be detected in vivo with the trade-off being resolution.…with optical imaging, it's a very sensitive modality. So you might be able to see something at lower concentrations, for example, with bioluminescent imaging. If you look at some of the tumor studies, in some of the publications, we see even a few days after the injection of tumor cells, we're able to see signals, but we're not necessarily able to localize them very well. So, for example, if you have, let's say, a signal in the right lobe of the liver, you would see something coming with optical imaging, but you wouldn't necessarily be able to localize it and say precisely exactly where it is.Without these in vivo imaging methods, understanding the biology of tumor progression would require a larger cohort of animals, with a requirement to euthanize some fraction at various time points to locate tumors and measure their size. That's the reduction element of the 3 Rs.Refinement is also possible. Stephen shared an example of how new contrast agents in microCT allow the study of fatty liver disease that couldn't be done previously with terminal studies and histology. As for replacement, the development of organoids, small collections of differentiated cells, offer an alternative to some animal assays while more closely reflecting an in vivo condition than monolayer cell cultures. I'll be covering that in a future episode.Your deepest insights are your best branding. I'd love to help you share them. Chat with me about custom content for your life science brand. Some people consider themselves dog or cat people, while others love smaller furry friends. Sarah Hedges of Grand Falls-Windsor has been running Central Small Animal Rescue out of her home for nearly five years. Unfortunately, she had to make the hard decision to close temporarily, due to high costs and lack of space. Hedges spoke with Newfoundland Morning's Amy Feehan.

Dr. Travis Einertson is a small animal veterinarian who is involved in medicine and surgery at the Heritage Pet Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Einertson has a special interest in revising diabetes in cats using very low-carbohydrate diets. His track record in treating diabetes in companion animals is simply jaw-dropping. Using low-carbohydrate diets (and literally nothing else), he is able to achieve complete remission in more than 70% of his feline patients. He uses the same diet to reverse obesity and other illnesses in the animals that he treats. He decided to take that low-carbohydrate diet—the one he had created for overweight cats—and reformulate it to improve his own health. The diet was based on similar principles and concepts from what he had worked with for cats for several years. The Heritage Pet Hospital's biggest goal is to prevent chronic disease in the pet patients they treat by using many health interventions, including implementing a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.01.07.523102v1?rss=1 Authors: Zhu, Y., Auer, F., Gelnaw, H., Davis, S. N., Hamling, K. R., May, C. E., Ahamed, H., Ringstad, N., Nagel, K. I., Schoppik, D. Abstract: Balance and movement are impaired in a wide variety of neurological disorders. Recent advances in behavioral monitoring provide unprecedented access to posture and locomotor kinematics, but without the throughput and scalability necessary to screen candidate genes / potential therapeutics. We present a powerful solution: a Scalable Apparatus to Measure Posture and Locomotion (SAMPL). SAMPL includes extensible imaging hardware and low-cost open-source acquisition software with real-time processing. We first demonstrate that SAMPL's hardware and acquisition software can acquire data from three species (flies, worms, and zebrafish) as they move vertically. Next, we leverage SAMPL's throughput to rapidly (two weeks) gather a new zebrafish dataset. We use SAMPL's analysis and visualization tools to replicate and extend our current understanding of how zebrafish balance as they navigate through a vertical environment. Next, we discover (1) that key kinematic parameters vary systematically with genetic background, and (2) that such background variation is small relative to the changes that accompany early development. Finally, we simulate SAMPL's ability to resolve differences in posture or vertical navigation as a function of affect size and data gathered -- key data for screens. Taken together, our apparatus, data, and analysis provide a powerful solution for labs using small animals to investigate balance and locomotor disorders at scale. More broadly, SAMPL is both an adaptable resource for labs looking process videographic measures of behavior in real-time, and an exemplar of how to scale hardware to enable the throughput necessary for screening.
