Até relativamente pouco tempo atrás os recursos para construção de edificações econômicas e multifuncionais tinham que vir da própria propriedade ou da biorregião e o maior insumo era o conhecimento de hidráulica, arquitetura e engenharia. Enquanto foi assim, o conhecimento tradicional nos ensinava a construir com recursos renováveis, com autonomia e soberania de insumos e ferramentas com eficiência energética; tanto em relação aos meios de construção quanto ao conforto térmico. A regionalidade nos ensinava rapidamente sobre a biocapacidade tornando o esgotamento de recursos ou o saneamento mal feito uma punição quase que imediata. Da revolução verde para cá, as edificações de moradia e produção passaram a custar um percentual muito alto da liquidez dos empreendimentos rurais. É possível dizer que a propaganda da escala industrial usa o custo das edificações de produção para amarrar o produtor rural em um financiamento onde ele perde o domínio de sua propriedade. No papel a propriedade é do produtor, mas na prática é do banco que cria uma plataforma de escoamento para as corporações mineradoras, farmacêuticas e petroquímicas. Produtores rurais de sucesso concentram seus esforços na criação de uma fazenda móvel, onde o capital está no conhecimento, na informação e no manejo e não na infraestrutura. (Salatin)

Last month, we were in western Virginia talking to the pioneering regenerative farmer Joel Salatin about how American can fix itself one bite at a time. Today we are on the other coast, in western Oregon, talking to another regenerative farmer, Mimi Casteel. In contrast with Salatin's Polyface Farm, Casteel's beautiful Hope Well vineyard focuses on the production of wine. And yet, as Casteel explains, she and Salatin share a faith in the regenerative role of the soil in reinventing American agriculture. This is the first part of a two part conversation with Casteel. Next week, in a KEEN ON America interview, she talks more expansively about her love of American nature and her responsibility, as a citizen, to pass it on to future generations of Americans. Mimi is the daughter of Ted Casteel and Pat Dudley, co-founders of Bethel Heights Vineyard. Growing up working in the vineyard and winery, Mimi gained such an appreciation for the industry that she promptly left home after high school. Armed with a BA in History and Classics from Tulane University, Mimi spent the next year working in various National Forests across the west. Her adventures fueled her passion for studying botany, forestry, and ecology. Mimi earned her MS from Oregon State University in Forest Science, and spent the next several years working as a botanist and ecologist for the Forest Service, living in the backcountry. She could never get past the longing for the vineyard, and working with the vines. Mimi returned to Bethel Heights in 2005, along with her cousin and childhood best friend Ben to take the helm as second generation winegrowers and owners. In 2015 Mimi left Bethel Heights and began her Hope Well journey, building an island of biodiversity and resilience on her own 80-acre farm, growing grapes for others to support the farm, and making wines to give a voice to the process of regeneration. Firmly convinced that moving from conventional to regenerative agriculture on working lands is the most powerful tool humanity has to reverse climate change, the mission of Hope Well has been to help spread the word by example, one farm at a time. 2020 changed everything. In 2020 the climate delivered a clear personal message that there is no time left for a one-farm-at-a-time strategy to address the climate crisis. In 2021 Mimi made the hard decision to move Hope Well, the wine, the sheep, the chickens, the children, the philosophy, the entire ethos, to a much smaller, integrated farm that allows for the time and personal capacity to do the work that needs to be done now, building strategies and networks that can transform agriculture on a global scale while there is still time.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Mike Badger has worked in corporate America, and he grew up believing that was the way that life worked.  However, he later decided that it did not have to be that way.  He and his wife decided to farm right then and there.

Military correspondent Emanuel Fabian joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. The airforce, navy and ground troops continue to operate in all parts of Gaza. As of this morning, 91 soldiers have fallen in the ground operation. We begin today's episode with a failed hostage rescue attempt between Thursday and Friday night in which two soldiers were seriously wounded and several hostage takers were killed, but no hostages were freed. We hear updates on what is happening on the ground in Gaza, including the discovery of arms hidden inside a school's teddy bear. Fabian also explains the widely circulated pictures of Gaza men stripped to their underwear. We turn to the northern border and learn about IDF drone strikes in Syria. Fabian recently joined the 261st Brigade's 8717th “Alon” Battalion, in the town of Salatin, on the outskirts of Jabaliya, in northern Gaza. We hear what he learned there. A senior Israeli defense official was quoted in media reports that the Israeli military needs another three to four weeks to complete its current offensive in southern Gaza's Khan Younis and a similar amount of time after that to wrap up the first stage of the war against Hamas. Sometimes you're fortunate enough to meet someone by chance and your interaction — even if short, has a significant impact on your life. When I happened upon Tom Scannell in May of 2020 during a family trip to Pine Island, Florida, I knew I'd found a fellow freedom fighter in this humble yet extremely driven lifelong, extremely fit farmer. He gave us a tour of his Pineshine Farms, patiently answered my barrage of questions and very generously gave me a book that is now one of my favorite reads: Everything I Want to do is Illegal by Joel Salatin, owner of Polyface Farms.Tom is a rebel in the agricultural space. He had to unlearn most of what he was taught to grow “beyond organic” food in a regenerative fashion, and I admire his focuses on appreciating beauty in Nature and harmonizing with our natural resources. I also love that he's not afraid to “fail forward” nor speak the truth, whether it means exposing the ties between big agriculture and the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, discussing the war on real milk or pointing out the scary fact that just four meat processors control ninety percent of the United States industry. Salatin's book goes into excellent detail on this, as well as the ridiculous hurdles our government (funded by big ag) makes small farmers jump in order to run their operations. It's hair-pull-out maddening!Tom rightfully comments that in today's terribly busy and off track society that Americans “take better care of their cars than their bodies… and spend more on lawn care than growing food.” Do not despair as there is plenty of hope within his message! Tom also explains how the environment in which we live and the foods we consume can help us greatly in creating or regaining our health.
