The Hamilton Today Podcast with guest host Scott Radley: The Hamilton-Burlington area is seeing its real estate sales drop while inventory is growing, why? The Olympic boxing gender scandal can be confusing to some while clear-cut to others but what's happened and in what state does it leave things for men's & women's sports? Cuba's strength in the sporting department has been undeniable for many years but this year's Olympic delegation is the smallest in decades which might be a sign of the crisis the country faces. Is Hamilton City Council handcuffing its police department? Canada's drone-spying scandal isn't as unusual as it may seem and it isn't as harmful of a cheating situation as what many, too many, athletes face. Where should we turn our attention to instead of spying with drones? Have the Blue Jays made appropriate trades to turn things around? Climate change, taxes and interest rates are no longer the top concern for Ontario's voters as immigration takes the top spot. Back-to-back wins are always a good sign but will it be enough for the Ticats as they get set to take on the Montreal Alouettes? It is all coming up on the Hamilton Today Podcast! Guests: Rob Golfi, Sales Representative with RE/MAX Escarpment Realty, The Golfi Team Dr. Jason Profetto, Director of Family Medicine and Chair of Clinical Skills and MD Admissions at McMaster University Dr. Robert Huish, Associate Professor, Department of International Development Studies, Dalhousie University Vito Sgro, Former Mayoral Candidate and Political Analyst Declan Hill, Academic and Investigative Journalist with an expertise in corruption in sport, match fixing, and organized crime Josh Goldberg, Journalist, TheScore Lisa Covens, Senior Vice President, Leger Rick Zamperin, Host of Good Morning Hamilton, Host of The 5th Quarter & CHML Sports Director Learn more about your ad choices. On today's episode of The Flourishing Therapreneur we are joined by Nicole McNelis, M.Ed., NCC, LPC. This episode is for you if you are: Open to transforming marketing your private therapy practice from painful to pleasant Curious about how small steps can make big waves, just by staying true to your authentic self Committed to repurposing the skills you already have to shift your marketing mindset (and see behavior follow suit!) Fueled by connection and using connections to help grow your therapy practice And interested in working smarter (not harder!) by making it easy for colleagues and clients to remember you, count on you, and refer new clients to you! I learned so much visiting with Nicole about repurposing clinical techniques to update marketing and mindset. We addressed how therapists already possess some of the most important marketing tools out there: relationships, rapport, and reciprocity. As therapists, we are comfortable connecting with others, so it only makes sense we would use these existing skills to grow our private practices by marketing with other providers. Nicole highlights the importance of a two-way street with this approach, as well as making yourself visible and memorable in order for these methods to be successful. I felt so encouraged knowing I already have a skillset that can make my marketing strategy successful, growing my private practice AND connecting with other awesome practitioners! Want to learn more? Dental school does not teach us everything we need to know to succeed in Dentistry (hardly surprising). There are certain procedures that we learn (just about!), but it doesn't give us those soft skills, the people skills and a heck of a lot of basic competencies. This episode is NOT about bashing Dental Schools. It's about recognising where were were 'let down' and taking the steps to 'fix it'. There is so much we must gain from being mentored by people who've been there and done it before us. Dr. Paul Goodman is one of those good people in Dentistry that we need to look out for. https://youtu.be/LpOEBcmguR0 Check out this full episode on YouTube Need to Read it? My secret to getting high case acceptance is one sentence Jaz's Introduction:Hello, Protruserati. I'm Jaz Gulati and welcome to this interference cast. I've got Dr. Paul Goodman from Philadelphia, USA. He runs this amazing community called Dental Nachos. Just a great resource of positivity in dentistry, and so much help and courses for dentists all over the world. It will be so obvious to you from our conversation, his enthusiasm and his great analogies and way of communicating. I'm just a huge fan of Paul Goodman. And I love the theme that we discuss, you know, how dental school let you down. Now please, please, please. I have so many colleagues are working in dental schools and I'm well connected with dental schools. Listen, we are not bashing dental schools. Okay, we are not bashing dental schools. We are merely just raising a few real world points that perhaps, perhaps in some areas of dentistry, and maybe even clinical experience that there was a little bit of a shortfall. Now it's okay. It's alright. We get it. We understand why okay? There's only so much dental school can fulfill and it takes you back to being on orthodontic clinic and one of the tutors goes to me, she goes tp me, Jaz, did you learn to drive before passing a driving test? Or after passing a driving test? And I've only recently got my license, I was like Well, I think afterwards because I still really don't know how to drive yet properly. So it's just same in dentistry, okay? Dental school will give you that certificate, will give you that license to drill. But actually how you communicate with patients, how you can formulate really good treatment plans that are appropriate, how you can get your hands skills to whether you want them to be where they need to be. That takes time, devotion, mentorship, and it is universal, that we have to learn that once we qualify. That kind of process is only enhanced and fast tracked through good mentorship and being around good people in dentistry. And let me tell you what Dr. Paul Goodman is a good person in dentistry. Let's listen to the interview. Main Interview: [Jaz]Paul Goodman, Dr. Paul Goodman from the USA from the Dental, from the nachoverse. How are you? [Paul]I'm doing awesome Jaz, really thrilled to be talking with you. I love this topic.
Have you ever wondered how your attending on rounds or clinic preceptor reached their position in academia? Or perhaps you've pondered about what goes on behind the scenes of your simulated patient encounters? Maybe you've tutored medical students or led a dissection group before and are interested in exploring the deeper world of medical education. In this episode of the UnsCripted podcast, Mason sits down with the University of Cincinnati's very own Dr. Kelleher to expound upon the vast world of medical education and advise students about how they can further explore their interests in Med Ed. Dr. Matthew Kelleher is an internal medicine-pediatrics hospitalist at Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Medical Center and at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Dr. Kelleher received his MD from the University of Illinois School of Medicine in 2010, where he graduated with AOA and Gold Humanism Honor Society distinction. He completed his Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency training at the University of Cincinnati in 2014, where he also completed a chief year and earned a Master's in Medical Education in 2017. In addition to his roles as a hospitalist, he also serves as an Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine residency program at the University of Cincinnati and as one of the Clinical Skills course directors for 1st and 2nd year medical students at the UC College of Medicine. In this episode, Dr. Kelleher elaborates on what the world of Med Ed looks like, describes the different roles of clinician educators/clerkship directors/program directors, and what his day-to-day life as a hospitalist and clinician educator entails. He also offers helpful advice to medical students who may want to explore their interests in medical education and how these students can continue this pursuit in residency and beyond. Englar, DVM, DABVP (Canine and Feline Practice) graduated from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008. She practiced as an associate veterinarian in companion animal practice before transitioning into the educational circuit as an advocate for pre-clinical training in primary care. She debuted in academia as a Clinical Instructor of the Community Practice Service at Cornell University's Hospital for Animals. She then transitioned into the role of Assistant Professor as founding faculty at Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine. While at Midwestern University, she had the opportunity to teach the inaugural Class of 2018, the Class of 2019, and the Class of 2020. While training these remarkable young professionals, Dr. Englar became a Diplomat of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP). She then joined the faculty at Kansas State University between May 2017 and January 2020 to launch the Clinical Skills curriculum. In February 2020, Dr. Englar reprised her role of founding faculty when she returned “home” to Tucson to join the University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine. As a dual appointment Associate Professor and the Director of Veterinary Skills Development, Dr. Englar currently leads the Clinical and Professional Skills curriculum. In her current role, she can design and debut a novel series of standardized client encounters for student training in clinical communication. She can also further her research as to how clinical communication drives relationship-centered care. Dr. Englar is passionate about advancing education for generalists by thinking outside of the box to develop new course materials for the hands-on learner. This labor of love is preceded by four texts that collectively provide students and clinicians alike with functional, relatable, and practice-friendly tools for success: Performing the Small Animal Physical Examination (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2017) Writing Skills for Veterinarians (5M Publishing, Ltd., 2019) Common Clinical Presentations in Dogs and Cats (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2019) A Guide to Oral Communication in Veterinary Medicine (5M Publishing, Ltd., 2020) Dr. Englar's students fuel her desire to create. They inspire her to develop the tools that they need to succeed in clinical practice. If the goal of educators, as they are tasked by the accrediting bodies, is to create “Day-One”, so-called “Practice-Ready” veterinarians, then this text and her others complement the mission. When Dr. Englar is not teaching or advancing primary care, she trains in the art of ballroom dancing and competes nationally with her instructor, Lowell E. Fox.
