Creating Access Through Film with Angela C. Lee

Why is film such an important medium for creating access? How can we use empathy to expand vision? Hosts Jason and Yvonne Lee share a moment with Spirit Award nominated producer (Songs My Brothers Taught Me), Angela C. Lee who also is the Associtate Director of Artist Development at Film Independent. By examining the ecosystem of filmmaking and producing, these three discuss the larger notion that access to “Hollywood” doesn't come just because we deserve it. They explore how we can find (or even create) traction within a film system by showing myopic gatekeepers the capability of success from projects that have stories, actors and production teams with whom these power-holders may not associate with viability. As a solution, these three discuss one real truth: diverse producers get diverse projects made. How do we nurture empathy to gain equity? How do we create a pathway to ownership so that we can control and expand vision? Listen and be inspired by Angela's determined passion. LA based and a native Chicagoan, she understands that producing is about seeing and supporting a filmmaker's vision, and sticking with them for the long haul to create space where they can shine. Along with Jason and Yvonne, who are on a mission to provide opportunities for stories that may not otherwise be told, they ask, how can we explain that discovery is infinite? For more spirited discussions, make sure to subscribe to the podcast. And if you've enjoyed thinking and mocktailing along with us, we'd love for you to leave us a review. Cosa dobbiamo aspettarci? Rimaniamo in casa Warner con i piani atti a portare HBO Max in Europa. Si parla di 2022, ma cosa potrebbe cambiare? Spazio a croccantissime recensioni. Buon Ascolto!Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/suldivanodiale)

Listening to the Breakfast All Day Podcast is the height of fashion, darling — especially this week, when we disagree strongly on a couple of new movies. Alonso loved the Disney villain origin story “Cruella” and Christy was not a fan (although the clothes are amazing). Christy loved the documentary “Moby Doc” and Alonso thought it was annoying. Matt is somewhere in between on both of these. But we were all in agreement on John Krasinski’s solid sequel “A Quiet Place Part II.” In news, we talk about California offering $116.5 million in prize money to get people vaccinated, the “Friends” reunion, the “Borat” extras on Amazon, Lindsay Lohan starring in a Netflix Christmas movie and Kelly Clarkson taking over Ellen DeGeneres’ talk-show time slot. And over at our Patreon, we review Chloe Zhao’s feature filmmaking debut, 2015’s “Songs My Brothers Taught Me,” as May’s Off the Menu selection, and recap episode 7 of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Thanks for joining us, and have a safe and fun holiday weekend!

Filmmaker, Chloe Zhao Nomadland filmmaker Chloe Zhao is as "indie" as it gets, but she may not be able to hold onto that title much longer considering that she just finished directing the new Marvel film Eternals, due out in November 2021.  But for now let’s keep our attention on her indie cred and how she started turning heads in the film world.  We’ll start with her debut feature, Songs My Brothers Taught Me.  She wrote, directed and co-edited this one, as well as having co-produced it with Forest Whitaker.  The film was accepted and lauded at both the Sundance and Cannes film festivals. Her next film, The Rider, was also a highly acclaimed picture about a Lakota cowboy named Brady.  The film was made with non-professional actors on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.  Although this film also made it to Cannes, what is most significant is the use of non-professional actors.  The reason being that, with a couple of exceptions in the lead roles, Chloe does the same thing with Nomadland.  And it really has an impact on the feel of the movie in a good and very necessary way.  If you look at the credits on IMDB, you’ll see character names such as; Swanky, Patty, Doug, Angela, Carl…and then when you look over to see the names of the “actors” who played them…you see the exact same names.  As I mentioned, there are two big exceptions to the "non actor" aspect.  Frances McDormand plays "Fern" and David Strathairn plays, you guessed it..."Dave". The film is based on the 2017 non-fiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century by Jessica Bruder, and is about a woman who leaves her small town to travel around the American West.  Of course it’s about a lot more than that, but you should definitely give the film a look to fill in the rest of the blanks for yourself. Editing Nomadland In our discussion with Nomadland filmmaker Chloe Zhao we talk about: The influence of Manga and comic books on her style and love of editing Whether or not editors should be on location and on set How she takes inspiration from director Wong Kar-wai Abandoning the two-shot How her nomad-like editorial setup has evolved The Credits Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs Get to know the American Cinema Editors See the latest Special Offers for Avid Media Composer and Media Composer Ultimate Learn Avid for free with Media Composer | First Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube

Set in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, Songs My Brothers Taught Me primarily revolves around seventeen-year-old brother Johnny Winters and his eleven-year-old sister Jashaun, living with their alcoholic single mother Lisa below the poverty line. With local jobs in very short supply, John makes a few bucks here and there delivering bootleg alcohol and weed to his Oglala Lakota brethren in a place plagued by alcoholism and a lack of easy roads in life.  Meanwhile, their biological father, a rodeo performer who sired over two dozen half-brothers and sisters in his lifetime around the reservation with many different women, has died in a fire.  The community gets together in their mourning, but the wounds run deep, leaving an anguished Jashaun wanting the closeness of her brother who is already making plans to leave her behind to move thousand of miles away with his girlfriend Aurelia, who is on the verge of leaving to go to college in Los Angeles.
