Tune in to Divabetic's podcast on the 42nd Annual Mermaid Parade with our guests, Coney Island USA's Artistic Director Adam Rinn and Poet Lorraine Brooks. The Mermaid Parade is the nation's largest art parade. It brings together creative minds in art and fashion and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to Brooklyn's amusement district. The Parade originated to help preserve the tradition of Mardi Gras-type events popular in Coney Island between 1903 and 1954. This year, painter, performer, and sideshow historian Joe Coleman will be King Neptune, and his wife, artist, and photographer Whitney Ward will be Queen Mermaid. The couple will officially open the beaches for the beginning of summer and celebrate the sun, sand, sea, and salt air. Adam Rinn, Coney Island USA's Artistic Director, is a Coney Island native who has worked as a sword swallower, strongman, and variety performer for the past 20 years, so you're sure to enjoy this fun and colorful interview! Poet Lorraine Brooks revisits her groundbreaking poem "Beauty & The Beach," which premiered over thirteen years ago on Divabetic's Roundtable podcast. "Beauty & The Beach" resonates deeply with podcast listeners and Diabetic blog readers. Since then, we have reshared Lorraine's poem on body love, swimwear, and beaches on subsequent podcasts and blog entries. Lorraine shares how her opinions about her body and wearing a swimsuit have changed over the past decade, but her feelings about her diabetes diagnosis have not. She emphasizes the time, effort, and care she has put into her diabetes management, which has helped her remain free of diabetes-related complications. Our discussion also touches on how negative self-talk can hinder us from enjoying life. Lorraine has agreed to revisit the themes o

Our podcast this week will be a little different than usual, well, actually, I guess, a LOT different! We love to travel and one thing I've noticed is that so many of my guests, and other folks that I talk to, have traveled to some really interesting places and had some great experiences! We're thinking it would be fun and serve all of us well, to share some of these adventures and perhaps give us some ideas that we haven't considered in our own, upcoming travel plans. So, if you or someone you know has had a fun, interesting travel adventure, please reach out to me directly and we'll chat about having you share them with our listeners. I envision that, in some cases, we can simply combine some shorter stories into one, or more, travel related podcasts. If you are interested, let me know, and even if you don't have any personal stories to share, but think that hearing some of our neighbor's travel stories would be fun & educational, let me know that too! In the spirit of kicking off the idea, I have an interview I did a couple of years ago, with King Lewey, owner & proprietor of King Lewey's Island. This place is a hidden gem, a tiny private island about 12 miles off the coast of Belize! It is one of the most remarkable places Marsha & I have ever visited! Accessible exclusively by boat, this picturesque resort spans only about an acre, but promises an extraordinary experience that will leave you refreshed, relaxed and enchanted! From the moment you arrive, the dedicated team is devoted to anticipating your every need and ensuring your stay is both magnificent and memorable! If you recall the television show Fantasy Island, it has THAT kind of feel on arrival! You are greeted with smiles, cool eucalyptus towels and delicious island drinks! You are then taken to your private, built over the water, cabana, and given a quick tour of everything you need to know. From there, it's up to you. You can do as much, or as little as you like! King Lewey's Island is a place where time slows down, where the worries of life dissolve into the horizon. You can unwind & rejuvenate in a truly extraordinary, one of a kind, destination. I woke up early every morning to a couple of the islands full time residents, two beautiful parrots named Kiki & Rio, always carrying on a conversation, in which I was occasionally included! And there is no need to worry about what to eat; the finest chefs in Belize are there, crafting incredible, delectable dishes, immersing you with fresh, delicious, healthy cuisine, every day. Often, local fishermen bring their catch to the island and you select your dinner, right there! And since there are only a handful of other guests on the island at any given time, you always receive individualized attention and hospitality. There are plenty of activities to keep you “busy”, snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing and endless photo opportunities! For reasons I wasn't sure of, but now so glad I did, I sat down with King Lewey one morning and recorded a short interview under a palm tree! King Lewey is the quintessential island host, carefully observing every detail. And though he isn't there all the time, we were fortunate in that he was there our entire stay! King Lewey has the look and presence of King Neptune! You'll enjoy hearing his thoughts and what led him from Washington State, where he still resides, to purchasing a remote island off the coast of Belize and up fitting it, so that it is, yes “Fit for a King!” Enjoy the conversation, and you can click on the link for more information about the island. And you are always welcome to reach out to me with questions, or ideas! Bon voyage!! We're ready, we're ready! To review the epic adventures of a yellow sponge and his pink sea star bestie with The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004). When Plankton frames Mr. Krabs for stealing King Neptune's crown, SpongeBob and Patrick are given 6 days to find the crown in Shell City and return home to spare his life. Despite everyone accusing them of being unserious children, together they must brave many terrifying trials and tribulations (and live action cameos) to prove their worthiness and succeed in their quest. The duo learn that bravery isn't about awards or kelp mustaches, but about the goofy goober you are on the inside. As the "series finale" of SpongeBob, did this movie live up to the hype from its predecessor? Or do we prefer the TV show instead? Let's find out together!
We begin with a look at the ‘state' of the retail industry in 2023. Nordstrom is out and Zellers is making its return. We discuss the overall trends and projections for the retail sector, with Jane Domenico, Senior Vice President at “Colliers Real Estate Management”. Next, a look at the war in Ukraine in a different light. We examine the influence Joseph Stalin's ‘reign' still holds in Russia 70 years after his death, and how his leadership style compares to current President Vladimir Putin. We discuss with Dr. James Ryan, Professor of History from Cardiff University. Meant to be an event promoting inclusion and acceptance, the ‘Reading with Royalty' program at the Calgary Public Library has been interrupted by hate and homophobia. We speak with drag performer “King Neptune” who was in attendance this weekend, when the event was halted.
Ahoy mateys, Captain Eric here as it's now time to take an extra special look at SpongeBob's feature film debut, with The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie! Released on November 19th 2004, SpongeBob and Patrick are thrust into an adventure of a lifetime after Plankton frames Mr. Krabs for the theft of King Neptune's crown, and are given 6 days to retrieve the stolen goods all the way in the far off land known as Shell City . With the Krabby Patty formula and the entire town of Bikini Bottom at Plankton's disposal, it's up to these two Goofy Goobers, their patty wagon, and David Hasselhoff to get the crown, save the town, and Mr. Krabs! Three Vikings, an archeologist and two podcasters walk into a bar…. This week, Jamesy and Brando recap the Dive Into Earth Day event and tell a little history about the location of the dive, Rockport State Recreation Area. In this episode of In Search of the Crystal Skull, Arun and Patricia conclude Nicktoons Movie Month with a vs. match between the 2004 film The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie vs. the 2015 sequel The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, SpongeBob and Patrick travel to Shell City to retrieve King Neptune's crown in 7 days before he executes Mr. Krabs whom he believed stole and sold the crown. In reality, it was Plankton who stole it as a part of Plan Z to take over Bikini Bottom. In Sponge Out of Water, SpongeBob and Plankton have to work together to retrieve the Krabby Patty formula after it was stolen by a pirate named Burger Beard. He was able to succeed in his plans thanks to a magical book that can make anything happen when you write on it. SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, and Sandy journey into the surface and fight Burger Beard to get the formula back. When The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie premiered in theaters, it received mixed to positive reviews from critics calling it a "charming romp", but an overextended episode of the show. However, it has become a childhood favorite for fans of the show still regarded as the best film in the trilogy. It currently has a 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. When Sponge Out of Water premiered in theaters, it was praised for Antonio Banderas' performance, its wacky, fun adventure, and zany humor. However some fans state that it wasn't as good as the original. When Arun and Patricia recorded the episode, it was rated 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, it has changed to 81% on Rotten Tomatoes and no longer in Crystal Skull territory. Which film did Arun and Patricia enjoy the most? The original or the sequel? This is the story of the world's most high-profile kidnap...of a horse. Welcome to Epsom, the year is 1981 and Shergar, a prized stallion, has just won the 202nd Derby by ten lengths - the longest winning margin in the race's history. Owned by the Aga Khan, the millionaire community leader, the champion horse gained international prominence and was regarded as a national hero during a difficult period in Irish history. On a cold winter night in 1983, a group of armed men entered the Ballymany Stud in balaclavas and stole the stallion declaring: "We have come for Shergar. We want £2 million for him." The codeword for future negotiations was to be King Neptune. While the facts of this case have been widely reported, this series unpicks the theories about the disappearance. We'll revisit all the bizarre events that took place after the kidnap, from psychics to horse skulls to negotiations led by English journalists. We unpick the police case and the comedy character leading it, trilby-wearing superintendent James Murphy and meet the sport's journalist Derek “Tommo” Thompson who was flown to Belfast to negotiate the release. Using archives, news reports and new interviews, we go along on a ride that has some strange turns, oddball characters and juicy conspiracies. Almost 40 years on from his kidnap, we look back at a story that gripped the world to try and understand why the horse's legacy still lives on. Told by the Texan tones of Vanilla Ice, we'll reveal some of the strange theories that made this Irish story go global.

Join Stelly and Gavin as they discuss the second segment of the nineteenth episode, Neptune's Spatula. Not the best episode we've ever watched. With a tip of the hat to King Arthur, SpongeBob is able to retrieve the Golden Spatula from the Greasy Griddle at the Fry Cook's Museum, resurrecting King Neptune who challenges SpongeBob to a cook off. Elsewhere, the coronavirus has brought Girl Scout Cookie season to a premature end, forced Stelly to hurriedly get the contents of her locker home, and means Gavin will be working from home for the foreseeable. Stay well, folks. In our 50th episode, we review Titanic with special guest Laura Taylor! Fun fact: in the original cut, after Jack screams "I'm the king of the world!", there was a shot of King Neptune saying "Oh yeah?" while rubbing his hands together malevolently.
