This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring trumpeter, educator and recording artist Clay Jenkins, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. About Clay Jenkins: Clay Jenkins is a renowned jazz trumpeter and educator whose dynamic career spans decades of performance and teaching. He launched his performing journey with the Stan Kenton Orchestra before moving to Los Angeles, where he toured and recorded with the big bands of Buddy Rich and the Count Basie Orchestra. A charter member of the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Clay has amassed over 100 recording credits, released seven solo albums, and recorded as a co-leader with many other notable names. Since joining the Eastman School of Music faculty, in Rochester, NY, in 2000, Clay has continued to perform worldwide, while mentoring the next generation of jazz musicians. Inspired by his close friendship with the late trumpet legend Eugene "Snooky" Young, he established the Snooky Young Endowed Scholarship at Eastman, and is currently writing a biography of Young's life. Clay is wonderfully warm, down-to-earth and humble. If you listened to our last episode featuring Emile Martinez, you'll know that Clay was instrumental in guiding Emile on his artistic journey, and so how appropriate it is that we can follow up on that interview with this one today. And he's a lifelong practicer. Clay is always trying to improve, and it's inspiring to hear someone at his level still talking about what they go through every day, trying to better themselves. Mike Price is a professional trumpet player, formerly living in Tokyo, Japan. He composes and performs with the Mike Price Jazz Quintet or Orchestra. Originally from Chicago Illinois, he was a student of Vincent Cichowicz (Chicago Symphony Orchestra) while getting a degree from Northwestern University. Following 3 more years studying jazz composition at Berklee School of Music , he toured with the Stan Kenton Orchestra followed by touring with Buddy Rich. Mike played 1st trumpet for both bands. (1967- 1970) Back in Los Angeles in 1972 Mike was an original member of the Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band, touring Japan many times before moving to Tokyo in 1989 for an NEA/U.S.- Japan Friendship Commission Artist exchange program grant. After conclusion of the grant period, he joined the Sharps & Flats Orchestra led by Nobuo Hara, staying with this band until the leader's retirement. During this time, Mike formed a jazz quintet in 1993 and a big band in 1999, both becoming active participants in the Tokyo jazz scene. The big band had its first concert to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Duke Ellington's birth with a rare performance of the “Such Sweet Thunder Suite,” alternatively known as the “Shakespearian Suite.” The orchestra's activities continued with new projects such as the Miles Davis/Gil Evans “Miles Ahead,” “Porgy & Bess Suite,” “Tribute to Frank Sinatra,” “Tribute to Buddy Rich,” Ellington's “Far East Suite,” “ A Tribute to Gerald Wilson,” with whom Mike worked in Los Angeles before going to Japan. During the early 2000's, Mike was introduced to Detroit jazz singer, Harvey Thompson, with whom a collaboration began. Many performances followed with Harvey being featured with both Mike's quintet and big band. In 2011 Mike recorded a CD with his Tokyo Quintet with all original compositions. “Presenting the Mike Price Jazz Quintet In Tokyo.” Twenty five years after arriving in Japan, after Hara san's retirement, Mike has returned to home ground in Los Angeles forming the American version of his quintet and orchestra with some of LA's top jazz musicians. Throughout his performing career, Mike has a parallel commitment to teaching. Before going to Japan, he graduated with a Master's Degree from University of Southern California with the help of a teaching assistantship in Jazz Studies. Shortly afterwards he received a California Community College Instructor Credential. There have been many private students in addition to band clinics and performances for high schools, universities, and community bands oth before and while living in Japan. Notable in this was an 18 year contract with Hamamatsu Public Schools to teach elementary, middle school, and high school students brass instrument instruction and fundamentals of jazz ensemble performance. Also, there was a 9 year contract to teach beginning trumpet classes at the elementary level and private lessons through high school to students at St. Maur International School in Yokohama, Japan. Hip-BoneMusic's monthly interview series, "Bone2Pick". December 2015: How better to celebrate the holidays and close out 2015 than a stimulating conversation with one of the most inventive, creative and dynamic trumpeters of any generation, the transcendent Tim Hagans. Tim sits down with Michael for an open conversation on anything and everything, including his tenure with the Stan Kenton Orchestra, touring and recording with the likes of Dexter Gordon, Thad Jones, Joe Lovano and Bob Belden, his love of the Cincinnati Reds and disdain for the designated hitter, his 15 years as artistic director of the Norrbotten Big Band, his work with the Michele Brangwen Dance Ensemble, his legendary approach to chromatic improvisation and his thoughts on the American political system. This edition of the Stan Kenton Orchestra was one of his finest and when this 7 part suite was commissioned by Stan for composer Johnny Richards, it was perfect timing. Richards was of Mexican and Cuban ancestry although born in the USA and this suite reflects his Latino heritage. Richards was a prolific writer and arranger and this suite is one of his finest works. The big Kenton Orchestra is augmented by 5 Latin percussionists to enhance the flavor of the music. The band in May 1956 when this was recorded was full of incredible soloists, Lucky Thompson, Bill Perkins, Carl Fontana, Sam Noto, Lennie Niehaus to name only a few. "Cuban Fire!" is loved even by non-Kenton fans! It is a magnificent orchestral work and is a worthy tribute to both Kenton and Richards. Caliente!!!!!!
I'm back this week with a new program celebrating the birthday of vocalist June Christy. June achieved her first fame with the Stan Kenton Orchestra of the 1940's. She went on to a very successful solo career in the 1950's and 60's. All of the recordings today feature June with the Kenton orchestra. I hope you enjoy these great recordings as we celebrate the birthday (November 20th) of the late June Christy. Please visit this podcast at http://bigbandbashfm.blogspot.com
This eight part suite by the great Johnny Richards stands as one of his masterworks right up there with "Cuban Fire". The Stan Kenton Orchestra conducted by Mr. Richards does a magnificent job of interpreting Richards' commanding music. Some great soloists stand out as well including Marvin Stamm(trumpet),Gabe Baltazar(alto saxophone) and Don Menza(tenor saxophone) and Kenton himself on piano plus many others. A great concerto for Jazz orchestra.
