This conversation was recorded during The Jazz Cruise earlier this year, and it featured a conversation between two of our longtime favorite performers – vocalist Catherine Russell and guitarist and vocalist John Pizzarelli, with Catherine taking on the interviewer role. For the last few years, John and Catherine have been performing together in a project they call 'Billie and Blue Eyes,' spotlighting the music of Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra. John talked about coming up in the jazz and music world and hanging (and playing) with legends like Benny Goodman, Les Paul, Joe Venuti, Zoot Sims, Slam Stewart, Clark Terry, George Shearing, and of course, his father Bucky. Plus, John shared some stories about working with pop icons James Taylor and Paul McCartney.

Tonight"s Jazz Feature is a tribute to the great arranger/composer/producer and music icon Quincy Delight Jones or simply "Q". Quincy passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles at age 91 on November 3, 2024. He was born in Chicago on March 14,1933. Quincy's incredible history is easily accessed on the internet. So we turn to the Jazz feature album and it's a big band recording of Quincy's distinctive arrangements and really put Quincy on the Jazz map. It was done in September of 1956 and titled "This Is How I Feel About Jazz". It got rave reviews and established Jones as a top notch arranger/composer along with his production skills. The band is full o all star players from trumpeters Art farmer and Ernie Royal to saxophonists Phil Woods, Zoot Sims and Lucky Thompson and trombone masters like Jimmy Cleveland and Urbie Green and pianist Hank Jones, vibes master Milt Jackson to bassists Paul Chambers and Charles Mingus. The album is a masterpiece of arrangements and leaves room for so many great soloists too. Enjoy the earlt important music of Quincy Jones.
He was one of the greatest musical minds of the 20th century… and he hailed from Seattle. Songwriter, composer, arranger and producer Quincy Jones, died yesterday at the age of 91. The 28-time Grammy winner moved to the Pacific Northwest at the age of 10 and eventually graduated from Garfield High School. Jones credited Seattle's musical openness with shaping his style. He met Ray Charles here. In a typical night, they would play across the city, from the tony Seattle Tennis Club to hangouts on Jackson Street, which was in the city's red light district, playing classical, jazz, marches, and pop music. Jones played jazz trumpet. Quincy Jones described his time in Seattle for PBS' “American Masters” in 2021: "We had to play everything with school. We played Sousa. And you play classical music and Debussy… on the jobs… Ray Charles, we, played Debussey on some of the jobs and we had to play Big Fat Butterfly parody, a parody on a poor butterfly. We had to play absolutely everything." That musical openness and genre defying attitude was a thread that he carried throughout his life. In the 50's, Jones played with some of the jazz greats, including Herbie Mann, Zoot Sims, Hank Jones and Charles Mingus on Evening in Paris from his 1957 LP, “This Is How I Feel About Jazz." A few years later Jones played with Ray Charles on "One Mint Julep." But soon, Jones was branching out stylistically. He left an indelible mark on the music industry through his film scores... And while Soul Bossa Nova wasn't specifically WRITTEN for Austin Powers, it certainly became known as the theme song for the "International Man of Mystery..." He arranged songs for legends like Frank Sinatra. And in the 70's, when funk was EVERYWHERE, Jones turned it into gold, including the track "The Streetbeater," which became the theme song to Sanford & Sons... In the 80's Jones famously produced Michael Jackson's meteoric rise to stardom, with tracks like "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough." He butted heads with Jackson on the opening to Billie Jean... (He thought it was too long, Jackson disagreed.) And made the notorious phone call that got Eddie Van Halen in the studio to play guitar on "Beat It..." Quincy Jones, a giant of American music, is one of few producers to have number one records in three consecutive decades, the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s... Jones passed Sunday night at his home in Los Angeles. He was 91. Thank you to the supporters of KUOW, you help make this show possible! In this episode, I interview the incredible saxophonist and arranger Rick Bell. Bell has been active on the Atlanta jazz scene for decades and is a true renaissance man. While working as a musician, he also worked as an artist and film animator for the CDC in Atlanta. A native of Alabama - and an inductee in the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame - Bell and his wife (also a talented musician) moved to Atlanta to pursue careers and raise a family after meeting at Auburn University, where they performed with the Auburn Knights Orchestra. In our wide-ranging conversation, Bell describes his early years as a musician, trips to New York City, settling in Atlanta, developing his melodic and muscular approach to tenor saxophone, and opportunities to perform with musicians like Milt Jackson, Zoot Sims, and Clark Terry as a member of the house band at EJ's in the late 70s and early 80s. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did producing this episode. Tonight's Jazz Feature is the only American recording, under his name, of Belgian born guitar master Rene Thomas. Rene emigrated to the US in 1958 and then returned to Europe in 1962. He sadly passed away at age 47 from a heart attack after a concert in Spain. Rene's reputation preceded him when he arrived in the US and he was able to sit in and play with Miles Davis. Zoot Sims and many others. He worked briefly with Sonny Rollins and appeared on Sonny's album called "Sonny Rollins and The Big Brass". On this album Rene chose his sidemen wisely as he had worked with them in both Montreal and New York. On tenor saxophone, one of the most distinctive was J.R. Monterose and on piano the underrated Hod O'Brien. Bassist Teddy Kotick and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath make up the solid rhythm section. The tunes are very well paced with 3 originals by J.R.Monterose. A beautiful Thelonious Monk ballad, "Ruby, My Dear", The complex Miles Davis/John Lewis tune "Milestones" (known as the "first" Milestones) and two standard tune that feature Rene plus rhythm without J.R. "Guitar Groove" is one very fine album and leaves one wanting more. Rene Thomas and co., tonight's Jazz Feature.
