Forbidden love is in the air as Andrés Orozco-Estrada takes listeners from the streets of Bernstein's New York to Tchaikovsky's fantasy on Shakespearean Verona. The Argentine Pampas region is the setting of Ginastera's vibrant ballet about a city boy who wins the heart of a rancher's daughter. Barber's lush and virtuosic Violin Concerto features Benjamin Beilman, whose “rich sound conveys both dreamy lyricism and heated intensity” (The New York Times). Please note: Hilary Hahn must regrettably withdraw from her planned September 19 and 20 performances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Earlier this summer, Hahn suffered from a double pinched nerve; as part of her treatment, her medical team advised her to abstain from performing. While Hahn is expected to recover in time for the majority of her fall engagements and is improving steadily, she is not yet cleared to perform. Original ticket orders for this concert remain valid; no additional action is needed. For order adjustments, please contact Patron Services. We welcome the brilliant pianist Arthur Simoes to the podcast today. You are going to love this conversation. Arthur has tested the Taubman Approach in many mays; from classical literature to Dalcroze and now in jazz and improvisation. What's kind of fun about this episode is that I surprise Arthur with a rapid fire question time at the end of the episode. Stick around for that exciting exchange. You can be in touch with Arthur on Instagram @arthursimoesmusic,https://www.golandskyinstitute.org/arthur-simoes/ “We were captivated by the elegance of Arthur Simoes's touch, as he performed pieces from Ginastera with dazzling virtuosity and an ineffable sense of sorrow.” – ArcinfoArthur Simoes enjoys a diverse career as a pianist, composer, and educator. He has performed extensively in Europe, as well as in Latin America and in the United States, and he frequently presents lectures, workshops, and masterclasses across the globe.Passionate about education, Arthur has run a successful private studio for more than 10 years. He has also taught at the Institut Jaques-Dalcroze and at the Haute Ecole de Musique in Geneva, Switzerland. His teaching is rooted in the conviction that every person has the innate ability to learn music, and encompasses elements from Dalcroze Eurhythmics as well as the Taubman Approach. Arthur is a first prize winner of the 29th European Music Competition “Città di Moncalieri”, in Italy, as well as other piano competitions. Venues and festivals where he performed include the Victoria Hall (Geneva), La Schubertiade sur la Colline (Neuchâtel), and the Berklee Performance Center (Boston). His musical journey began at the age of 6, and he enrolled at the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève at the age of 10, from which he graduated with the Arditi Award for the best final recital of the year.

Buenos Aires Herald lo calificó como “The Music Man”.

For violinist Hilary Hahn, finding success as an international soloist has never been about sticking to the same menu of concertos by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Sibelius. Now in the fourth decade of her storied career, the three-time Grammy Award winner has consistently worked to expand the scope of the violin canon — commissioning a slate of new works from composers like Edgar Meyer, Jennifer Higdon, and Lera Auerbach. But on Eclipse, her latest release on Deutsche Grammophon, the centerpiece of the album isn't a work written for her. In fact, it's not even by a living composer. It's the violin concerto of Alberto Ginastera — a work that's seldom performed, and one Hahn immediately fell in love with when she first heard it years ago. Ever since then, she knew she had to record it. "It felt like one of those pieces I needed to take on for my own reasons, but also that it wasn't played very much," Hahn says on the latest episode of the Classical Post podcast. "I was enamored with the work, felt like it was written for me, even though I never met the composer. It's exactly what I like to dive into emotionally in music, and it requires a very specific relationship to the instrument that I feel is a strength of mine." Part of the reason Hahn was eager to record the work was not only the chance to add to the concerto's story with her performance — but also to allow everyone who listens to contribute their personal perspective to the work. "Music is a way to connect you with your own experience. As a listener, you are part of the interpretation of that music's history. When you listen to a piece, you add to the diversity of stories that it tells, just by being present in its space." In this discussion, we talk more about Eclipse and why another work on the album, Dvořák's Violin Concerto, deserves much more time in the spotlight as well. Plus, she shares how her wellness routine is all about tuning into the daily ebb and flow of her body, and the facial massage stone that helps her undo the neck and jaw tension that comes with years of playing the violin. Hilary Hahn's latest album, Eclipse, celebrates the power of authenticity. Recorded with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony and its Music Director (2014-2021), Andrés Orozco-Estrada, it sees the triple Grammy-winning violinist deliver interpretations of three works charged with universal emotions yet rooted in their composers' musical heritage: Dvorák's Violin Concerto, a tour de force from the Czech composer's “Slavic period,” Ginastera's Violin Concerto, a strikingly original 20th-century gem, and Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy, among the greatest virtuoso show.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Eclipse (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store)Your purchase helps to support our show! Classical Music Discoveries is sponsored by La Musica International Chamber Music Festival and Uber. @CMDHedgecock#ClassicalMusicDiscoveries #KeepClassicalMusicAlive#LaMusicaFestival #CMDGrandOperaCompanyofVenice #CMDParisPhilharmonicinOrléans#CMDGermanOperaCompanyofBerlin#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofBarcelonaSpain#ClassicalMusicLivesOn#Uber Please consider supporting our show, thank you!Donate (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) staff@classicalmusicdiscoveries.com This album is broadcasted with the permission of Crossover Media Music Promotion (Zachary Swanson and Amanda Bloom).

Superstar vioinist Hilary Hahn joins us to talk about her album ECLIPSE, from Deutsche Grammophon records. A celebration of Hilary's return to the stage (after a year-long sabbatical), ECLIPSE documents her artistic growth during that experience – represented by three wonderful works that speak to Hilary's virtuosity in different ways. Listeners will revel in Hilary's performance of Pablo de Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy (which Hilary had never performed before), and a brilliant rendition of Dvořák's sprightly violin concerto. The centerpiece of the program, however, is the violin concerto by Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera. Intricately layered, sometimes powerful and sometimes almost painfully intimate, Ginastera's concerto is given a spectacular performance from Hilary, running the gamut from fierce virtuosity to glass-like delicacy.

Synopsis In the 1980s, the Finnish Broadcasting Company had come up with the idea of commissioning a whole evening’s worth of orchestral pieces by native composer Einojuhanni Rautavaara, which, when taken together, would form a conventional concert program of overture, concerto and symphony. These three works have come to be called the “Angel Trilogy,” since each of them has a title with the word “Angel” in it. Rautavaara’s Fifth Symphony, with the working title “Monologue with Angels,” premiered on today’s date in 1986, was originally to be the symphonic conclusion of this triple commission. But Rautavaara dropped the title, and his Symphony No. 7, subtitled “Angel of Light,” ended up being the third part of the “Angel Trilogy,” alongside an overture entitled “Angels and Visitations” and a double-bass concerto entitled “Angel of Dusk.” If you asked the mystical Rautavaara why he changed his mind, he would probably have said it really wasn’t HIS idea at all. Rautavaara believed that his compositions already existed in ‘another reality,’ as he said, and his job was just to bring it into our world in one piece. "I firmly believe that compositions have a will of their own,” he said, “even though some people smile at the concept.” Music Played in Today's Program Einojuhani Rautavaara (1928 - 2016) Symphony No. 5 Leipzig Radio Symphony; Max Pommer, cond. BMG 62671 On This Day Births 1885 - German conductor and composer, Otto Klemperer, in Breslau; 1917 - American composer Lou Harrison, in Portland, Ore.; Deaths 1847 - German composer Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, age 41, in Berlin; She was the sister of Felix Mendelssohn; Premieres 1723 - Handel: opera "Flavio, re de' Langobardi" (Flavio, King of the Langobards), in London at the King's Theater in the Haymarket (Gregorian date: May 25); 1832 - Mendelssohn: "Hebrides" Overture ("Fingal's Cave"), in London, conducted by the composer; 1914 - R. Strauss: ballet "Josephslegende," in Paris; 1919 - Debussy: Saxophone Rhapsody (orchestral version by Roger-Ducasse), at a Société Nationale de Musique concert conducted by André Caplet at the Salle Gaveau in Paris; 1923 - Holst: "The Perfect Fool," in London at Covent Garden Opera House; 1941 - Cage: "Third Construction" for four percussionists, in San Francisco; 1942 - Copland: "Lincoln Portrait," by the Cincinnati Symphony conducted by André Kostelanetz, with William Adams the narrator; 1953 - American premiere of Stravinsky's opera, "The Rake's Progress," at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, with the composer conducting; The world premiere performance occurred on September 11, 1951, in Venice, again with the composer conducting; 1966 - Ginastera: "Concerto per Corde," by the Philadelphia Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy conducting; 1986 - Rautavaara: Symphony No. 5, in Helsinki, by Finnish Radio Symphony, Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting; 1987 - Alvin Singleton: "Shadows" for orchestra. By the Atlanta Symphony, Robert Shaw conducting; 1992 - James MacMillan: "Sinfonietta" at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, by the London Sinfonietta, Martyn Brabbins conducting; 1993 - Philip Glass: opera "Orphée" (based on the Jean Cocteau film), by the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass.; Others 1719 - Handel is commanded by the Lord Chamberlain (Thomas Holles, Duke of Newcastle), to hire singers for the recently established Royal Academy of Music's productions of Italian operas (Gregorian date: May 25); 1974 - Final London concert performance by conductor Leopold Stokowski, age 92 conducting the New Philharmonia Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall: The program was Symphony No. 4 by Brahms, the "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" by Vaughan Williams, the "Merry Waltz" by Otto Klemperer, and the "Rapsodie espagnole" by Ravel; This was not Stokowski's "final" concert appearance, however; He was on the podium again in Venice in July of that year, and continued to make studio recordings; He died on September 13, 1977, at the age of 95 in his house in Nether Wallop, Hampshire, England; Links and Resources On Rautavaara Rautavaara NYTimes obit

I had a chance to speak with grammy award winning guitarist, Jason Vieaux a couple of weeks ago in light of his upcoming release with the Escher String Quartet. Our interview was not quite as long as some of the others, but we were able to cover several really interest topics. Grammy winner Jason Vieaux, “among the elite of today's classical guitarists” (Gramophone), is the guitarist that goes beyond the classical. His most recent solo album, Play, won the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo.Jason Vieaux has performed as soloist with over 100 orchestras in the U.S. and abroad. Additional recent and future highlights include performances at Caramoor Festival as Artist in Residence, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society the National Gallery of Art, San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre, Buenos Aires’ Teatro Colon, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, New York's 92Y, Ravinia Festival, and many other distinguished series. A first rate chamber musician and programmer, he frequently collaborates with artists such as the Escher Quartet, harpist Yolanda Kondonassis,accordion/bandoneon virtuoso Julien Labro, and violinist Anne Akiko Meyers. His passion for new music has fostered premieres by Jonathan Leshnoff, Avner Dorman, Jeff Beal, Dan Visconti, David Ludwig, Vivian Fung, José Luis Merlin, and more.Vieaux’s latest CD release is a performance of Jonathan Leshnoff’s Guitar Concerto with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra (Naxos). He has two upcoming releases on Azica Records: a new album, Dance, with the Escher String Quartet (July 19, 2019), featuring works byBoccherini, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, and Aaron Jay Kernis; as well as a new solo Bach album. Recent recordings include Jeff Beal’s “Six Sixteen” Guitar Concerto with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra (BIS); Infusion (Azica) with accordionist/bandoneonist Julien Labro; Ginastera’s Guitar Sonata, which is featured on Ginastera: One Hundred (Oberlin Music) produced by harpist Yolanda Kondonassis; and Together (Azica), a duo album with Kondonassis. In 2012, the Jason Vieaux School of Classical Guitar was launched with ArtistWorks Inc., an interface that provides one on one online study with Vieaux for guitar students around the world. In 2011, he cofounded the guitar department at the Curtis Institute of Music, and in 2015 was invited to inaugurate the guitar program at the Eastern Music Festival. Vieaux has taught at the Cleveland Institute of Music since1997, heading the guitar department since 2001. He has received a Naumburg Foundation top prize, a Cleveland Institute of Music Distinguished Alumni Award, GFA International Guitar Competition FirstPrize, and a Salon di Virtuosi Career Grant. His primary teachers were Jeremy Sparks and John Holmquist. Vieaux was also the first classical musician to be featured on NPR’s “Tiny Desk” series. You can find out more about his upcoming performances, appearances and recordings at jasonvieaux.comI caught up with Jason in between his busy family schedule. He was gracious with his time and we were able to chat about his upcoming releases, and some other really good things like how his approach to recording has changed over the years, his teaching career, balancing family life with performing, and much more.
