We are kicking off another Foreign Film February, or "FFF", which has become a colloquialism at Haus der New World Pictures Podcast.  Is that not the case in your home?  If it isn't, it's time to start.  To kick off the 2026 #FFF, we are talking about 1987's SUBWAY TO THE STARS, a Brazilian drama that, if you looked at the poster, is nowhere close to what you would expect.  SUBWAY TO THE STARS explores a talented saxophonist (Vini) who's girlfriend (Nicinha) disappears after they have sex in an automobile junk yard.  It should be pointed out, they didn't have sex in one of the cars in the junk yard.  They do the nasty on the dirty ground full of oil, antifreeze, and transmission fluid. Given that, it should come as no surprise that Vini goes on a vision quest to find his missing girlfriend.  Unfortunately, because he's a young, attractive musician, he does a pretty shit job of looking for her.  Instead, he finds a menagerie of people to do the searching for him.  Does he find her?  If he does, does she stay with him?  We don't cover this part in the episode, but that's part of our charmIn addition to talking about SUBWAY TO THE STARS, we revisit our pre-production of Steamin' (the remake of 1985's Steaming) and whether it could be considered for Cannes.  We wonder whether Ska is ready to make a musical comeback.  Erica champions the need for more horns (saxophones in particular) in movies and music. Marc makes a claim that there is too much saxophone in George Michael's Careless Whispers.  Ryan talks about a great time at a Thom Yorke concert.  We also talk about SUBWAY TO THE STARS.

More than just possessing a formidable right hook, Eddie is distinguished by his immense drive and unwavering heart.  Get it? Like a lot of boxing movies, HEART leads up to a final big fight, but there's a trick.  A mobster has bribed Eddie's promoter, Nicky (Steve Buscemi), and manager, Buddy (Frank Adu) to fix the fight.  If this sounds like THE PRIZE FIGHTER without the comic sensibilities of Tim Conway and Don Knotts you would be right.  Also, there's no musical number in HEART. While Eddie gets himself into fighting shape, we talk about smelling salts, difficult breakups and the value of having a generous vacation policy.  Marc uses the opportunity to talk about another unrelated movie he likes and Erica brings up a new angle for her eventually-to-be-made movie, STEAMIN'.  This episode has something for everyone.

Any Given Sunday is a brutal, uncompromising look at the world of pro football. It's never subtle—in either its performances or depictions—which unfortunately is what ultimately hamstrings it. Oliver Stone over-directs the hell out of this movie. From its frequent cuts to its odd insertions of clips from other films, Any Given Sunday is full on cinematic whiplash.  For the actual football scenes, that chaos works. For everything else, not so much. In fact, Stone's insistence of seizure-inducing framing only detracts from the exceptional acting. And the cast of Any Given Sunday is stacked. Most notably, it boasts Al Pacino as aging coach Tony D'Amato and Jamie Foxx as upstart quarterback Willie Beamen, but it also features Cameron Diaz, John C. McGinley, Ann-Margret, LL Cool J, Lawrence Taylor, Jim Brown, and many more. Despite those issues, this is a quintessential football movie. And, fittingly, in a game that leaves many a good man battered and broken, there are few heroes here. Now, sit back, sack a few Land Shark Lagers, and don't get strokes, give them!
